An inequality of Kostka numbers and Galois groups of Schubert problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, this follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, an easy combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use that these Kostka numbers appear in tensor product decompositions of sl_2(C)-modules. Interpreting the tensor product as the action of certain commuting Toeplitz matrices and using a spectral analysis and Fourier series rewrites the inequality as the positivity of an integral. We establish the inequality by estimating this integral.

High-ordered Random Walks and Generalized Laplacians on Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Despite of the extreme success of the spectral graph theory, there are relatively few papers applying spectral analysis to hypergraphs. Chung first introduced Laplacians for regular hypergraphs and showed some useful applications. Other researchers treated hypergraphs as weighted graphs and then studied the Laplacians of the corresponding weighted graphs. In this paper, we aim to unify these very different versions of Laplacians for hypergraphs. We introduce a set of Laplacians for hypergraphs through studying high-ordered random walks on hypergraphs. We prove the eigenvalues of these Laplacians can effectively control the mixing rate of high-ordered random walks, the generalized distances/diameters, and the edge expansions.

Generalized crested products of Markov chains
Published in European J. Combin. 32, Issue 2 (2011), 243-257 • Search Publication
We define a finite Markov chain, called generalized crested product, which naturally appears as a generalization of the first crested product of Markov chains. A complete spectral analysis is developed and the $k$-step transition probability is given. It is important to remark that this Markov chain describes a more general version of the classical Ehrenfest diffusion model. As a particular case, one gets a generalization of the classical Insect Markov chain defined on the ultrametric space. Finally, an interpretation in terms of representation group theory is given, by showing the correspondence between the spectral decomposition of the generalized crested product and the Gelfand pairs associated with the generalized wreath product of permutation groups.

Spectral analysis of metric graphs and related spaces
The aim of the present article is to give an overview of spectral theory on metric graphs guided by spectral geometry on discrete graphs and manifolds. We present the basic concept of metric graphs and natural Laplacians acting on it and explicitly allow infinite graphs. Motivated by the general form of a Laplacian on a metric graph, we define a new type of combinatorial Laplacian. With this generalised discrete Laplacian, it is possible to relate the spectral theory on discrete and metric graphs. Moreover, we describe a connection of metric graphs with manifolds. Finally, we comment on Cheeger's inequality and trace formulas for metric and discrete (generalised) Laplacians.
Properties of the Generalized Zig-Zag Product of Graphs
The operation of zig-zag products of graphs is the analogue of the semidirect product of groups. Using this observation, we present a categorical description of zig-zag products in order to generalize the construction for the category of simple graphs. Also, we examine the covering properties of zig-zag products and we utilize these results to estimate their spectral invariants in general. In addition, we provide specific spectral analysis for some such products.

Spectral Analysis of Pollard Rho Collisions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the classical Pollard rho algorithm for discrete logarithms produces a collision in expected time O(sqrt(n)(log n)^3). This is the first nontrivial rigorous estimate for the collision probability for the unaltered Pollard rho graph, and is close to the conjectured optimal bound of O(sqrt(n)). The result is derived by showing that the mixing time for the random walk on this graph is O((log n)^3); without the squaring step in the Pollard rho algorithm, the mixing time would be exponential in log n. The technique involves a spectral analysis of directed graphs, which captures the effect of the squaring step.

Isospectral Cayley graphs of some finite simple groups

We apply spectral analysis of quotients of the Bruhat-Tits buildings of type $\tilde{A}_{d-1}$ to construct isospectral non-isomorphic Cayley graphs of the finite simple groups $\operatorname{PSL}_d({\mathbb F}_q)$ for every $d \geq 5$ ($d \neq 6$) and prime power $q > 2$.

A new approach to the theory of classical hypergeometric polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we present a unified approach to the spectral analysis of an hypergeometric type operator whose eigenfunctions include the classical orthogonal polynomials. We write the eigenfunctions of this operator by means of a new Taylor formula for operators of Askey-Wilson type. This gives rise to some expressions for the eigenfunctions, which are unknown in such a general setting. Our methods also give a general Rodrigues formula from which several well known formulas of Rodrigues type can be obtained directly. Moreover, other new Rodrigues type formulas come out when seeking for regular solutions of the associated functional equations. The main difference here is that, in contrast with the formulas appearing in the literature, we get non-ramified solutions which are useful for applications in combinatorics. Another fact, that becomes clear in this paper, is the role played by the theory of elliptic functions in the connection between ramified and non-ramified solutions.

Green functions on self-similar graphs and bounds for the spectrum of the Laplacian
Combining the study of the simple random walk on graphs, generating functions (especially Green functions), complex dynamics and general complex analysis we introduce a new method of spectral analysis on self-similar graphs. We give an axiomatic definition of self-similar graphs which correspond to general nested but not necessarily finitely ramified fractals. For this class of graphs a graph theoretic analogue to the Banach fixed point theorem is proved. Functional equations and a decomposition algorithm for the Green functions of self-similar graphs with some more symmetric structure are obtained. Their analytic continuations are given by rapidly converging expressions. We study the dynamics of a certain complex rational Green function $d$ on finite directed subgraphs. If the Julia set $\cj$ of $d$ is a Cantor set, then the reciprocal spectrum $\spec^{-1}P=\{1/z\mid z\in\spec P\}$ of the Markov transition operator $P$ can be identified with the set of singularities of any Green function of the whole graph. Finally we get explicit upper and lower bounds for the reciprocal spectrum, where $\cd$ is a countable set of the $d$-backwards iterates of a certain finite set of real numbers.

Application of Tree-like Structure of Graph to Matrix Analysis
Formulas for matrix determinants, algebraic adjunctions, characteristic polynomial coefficients, components of eigenvectors are obtained in the form of signless sums of matrix elements products taking by special graphs. Signless formulas are very important for singular and stochastic problems. They are also useful for spectral analysis of large very sparse matrices.
