Equiangular lines via matrix projection
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1973, Lemmens and Seidel posed the problem of determining the maximum number of equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^r$ with angle $\arccos(α)$ and gave a partial answer in the regime $r \leq 1/α^2 - 2$. At the other extreme where $r$ is at least exponential in $1/α$, recent breakthroughs have led to an almost complete resolution of this problem. In this paper, we introduce a new method for obtaining upper bounds which unifies and improves upon previous approaches, thereby yielding bounds which bridge the gap between the aforementioned regimes and are best possible either exactly or up to a small multiplicative constant. Our approach relies on orthogonal projection of matrices with respect to the Frobenius inner product and as a byproduct, it yields the first extension of the Alon-Boppana theorem to dense graphs, with equality for strongly regular graphs corresponding to $\binom{r+1}{2}$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^r$. Applications of our method in the complex setting will be discussed as well.

On the automorphism groups of rank-4 primitive coherent configurations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The minimal degree of a permutation group $G$ is the minimum number of points not fixed by non-identity elements of $G$. Lower bounds on the minimal degree have strong structural consequences on $G$. Babai conjectured that if a primitive coherent configuration with $n$ vertices is not a Cameron scheme, then its automorphism group has minimal degree $\geq cn$ for some constant $c>0$. In 2014, Babai proved the desired lower bound on the minimal degree of the automorphism groups of strongly regular graphs, thus confirming the conjecture for primitive coherent configurations of rank 3. In this paper, we extend Babai's result to primitive coherent configurations of rank 4, confirming the conjecture in this special case. The proofs combine structural and spectral methods.
The transformation of edge-regular and pseudo strongly regular graphs under graph operations
The graph $G$ is said to be strongly regular with parameters $(n,k,λ,μ)$ if the following conditions hold: (1) each vertex has $k$ neighbours; (2) any two adjacent vertices of $G$ have $λ$ common neighbours; (3) any two non-adjacent vertices of $G$ have $μ$ common neighbours. In this paper we study two weaker notions of strongly regular graphs. A graph satisfying the conditions $(1)$ and $(2)$ is called an edge-regular graph with parameters $(n,k,λ)$. We call a graph satisfying the conditions $(1)$ and $(3)$ a pseudo strongly regular graph with parameters $(n,k,μ)$. In this paper we study the impact of various graph operations on edge regular graphs and pseudo strongly regular graphs.

The average search probabilities of discrete-time quantum walks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the average probability that a discrete-time quantum walk finds a marked vertex on a graph. We first show that, for a regular graph, the spectrum of the transition matrix is determined by the weighted adjacency matrix of an augmented graph. We then consider the average search probability on a distance regular graph, and find a formula in terms of the adjacency matrix of its vertex-deleted subgraph. In particular, for any family of (1) complete graphs, or (2) strongly regular graphs, or (3) distance regular graphs of a fixed parameter $d$, varying valency $k$ and varying size $n$, such that $k^{d-1}/n$ vanishes as $k$ increases, the average search probability approaches $1/4$ as the valency goes to infinity. We also present a more relaxed criterion, in terms of the intersection array, for this limit to be approached by distance regular graphs.

Maximal cocliques of a strongly regular graph with parameters (2048,276,44,36)
This article considers a strongly regular graph with parameters (2048,276,44,36) that is related to the extended binary Golay code. That graph is known since about 1975 but there seems to be not much information on the contained maximal cocliques. The source package of this article contains a data file that encodes a sequence of maximal independence sets of that graph, covering all sizes from 20 to 67 and the size 72, and a Pascal program to check this assertion and to optionally generate a text file (to be read by the computer algebra system GAP) that contains the adjacency lists of that graph and the list of the independence sets.

Strongly regular graphs satisfying the 4-vertex condition
Published • View PublicationBIB
We survey the area of strongly regular graphs satisfying the 4-vertex condition and find several new families. We describe a switching operation on collinearity graphs of polar spaces that produces cospectral graphs. The obtained graphs satisfy the 4-vertex condition if the original graph belongs to a symplectic polar space.
Spectrum of Strongly Regular Graphs under Graph Operators
In this paper, we show that if G is strongly regular then the Gallai graph and the anti-Gallai graph of G are edge-regular. We also identify conditions under which the Gallai and anti-Gallai graphs are themselves strongly regular, as well as conditions under which they are 2-connected. We include also a number of concrete examples and a discussion of spectral properties of the Gallai and anti-Gallai graphs.
$q$-Analogs of strongly regular graphs

We introduce the notion of q-analogs of strongly regular graphs and give several examples of such structures. We prove a necessary condition on the parameters, show the connection to designs over finite fields, and present a classification.
Quasi-strongly regular graphs of grade three with diameter two
A quasi-strongly regular graph of grade $p$ with parameters $(n, k, a; c_1, \ldots, c_p)$ is a $k$-regular graph of order $n$ such that any two adjacent vertices share $a$ common neighbours and any two non-adjacent vertices share $c_{i}$ common neighbours for some $1 \leq i \leq p$. This is a generalization of a strongly regular graph. In this paper, we focus on strictly quasi-strongly regular graphs of grade $3$ with $c_i = k - i$ for $i = 1, 2, 3$. The main result is to show the sharp bounds of order $n$ for a given $k \geq 4$. Furthermore, by this result, we characterize all of these graphs whose $n$ satisfies upper or lower bounds.
New hemisystems of the Hermitian surface
Published • View PublicationBIB
Finding Hemisystems is a challenging problem and just few examples arising from the Hermitian surface are known. A recent method to obtain Hemisystems is based on using maximal curves. Along this side of research, we provide new examples of Hemisystems in $PG(3,p^2)$, for each prime of the form $p=1+4a^2$, with $ a $ integer. Last, we use these results to obtain two weight linear codes and strongly regular graphs.

On the generalized $\vartheta$-number and related problems for highly symmetric graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is an in-depth analysis of the generalized $\vartheta$-number of a graph. The generalized $\vartheta$-number, $\vartheta_k(G)$, serves as a bound for both the $k$-multichromatic number of a graph and the maximum $k$-colorable subgraph problem. We present various properties of $\vartheta_k(G)$, such as that the sequence $(\vartheta_k(G))_k$ is increasing and bounded from above by the order of the graph $G$. We study $\vartheta_k(G)$ when $G$ is the strong, disjunction or Cartesian product of two graphs. We provide closed form expressions for the generalized $\vartheta$-number on several classes of graphs including the Kneser graphs, cycle graphs, strongly regular graphs and orthogonality graphs. Our paper provides bounds on the product and sum of the $k$-multichromatic number of a graph and its complement graph, as well as lower bounds for the $k$-multichromatic number on several graph classes including the Hamming and Johnson graphs.

More about sparse halves in triangle-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
One of Erdos's conjectures states that every triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has an induced subgraph on $n/2$ vertices with at most $n^2/50$ edges. We report several partial results towards this conjecture. In particular, we establish the new bound $\frac{27}{1024}n^2$ on the number of edges in general case. We completely prove the conjecture for graphs of girth $\geq 5$, for graphs with independence number $\geq 2n/5$ and for strongly regular graphs. Each of these three classes includes both known (conjectured) extremal configurations, the 5-cycle and the Petersen graph.

Ramsey numbers of large books
Published • View PublicationBIB
A book $B_n$ is a graph which consists of $n$ triangles sharing a common edge. In 1978, Rousseau and Sheehan conjectured that the Ramsey number satisfies $r(B_m,B_n)\le 2(m+n)+c$ for some constant $c>0$. In this paper, we obtain that $r(B_m, B_n)\le 2(m+n)+o(n)$ for all $m\le n$ and $n$ large, which confirms the conjecture of Rousseau and Sheehan asymptotically. As a corollary, our result implies that a related conjecture of Faudree, Rousseau and Sheehan (1982) on strongly regular graph holds asymptotically.
Enumeration of strictly Deza graphs with at most 21 vertices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Deza graph $Γ$ with parameters $(v,k,b,a)$ is a $k$-regular graph with $v$ vertices such that any two distinct vertices have $b$ or $a$ common neighbours, where $b \ge a$. A Deza graph of diameter 2 which is not a strongly regular graph is called a strictly Deza graph. We find all 139 strictly Deza graphs up to 21 vertices.

On strongly regular graph with parameters (65; 32; 15; 16)
We construct a strongly regular graph with the parameters (65; 32; 15; 16). The idea is to search for an adjacency matrix that consists of circulant blocks. Equations with such matrices can be reduced to congruences with polynomials matrices of smaller orders. We can consider these congruences over different moduli for a more efficient computational approach.

Parametric restrictions on quasi-symmetric designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we attach several new invariants to connected strongly regular graphs (excepting conference graphs on non-square number of vertices) : one invariant called the discriminant, and a p-adic invariant corresponding to each prime number p. We prove parametric restrictions on quasi-symmetric 2-designs with a given connected block graph $G$ and a given defect (absolute difference of the two intersection numbers) solely in terms of the defect and the parameters of $G$, including these new invariants. This is a natural analogue of Schutzenberger's Theorem and the Shrikhande-Chowla-Ryser theorem. This theorem is effective when these graph invariants can be explicitly computed. We do this for complete multipartite graphs, co-triangular graphs, symplectic non-orthogonality graphs (over the field of order $2$) and the Steiner graphs, yielding explicit restrictions on the parameters of quasi-symmetric 2-designs whose block graphs belong to any of these four classes.

Remarks on pseudo-vertex-transitive graphs with small diameter
Published in Discrete Math. 345 (2022), no. 10, Paper No. 112990 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with vertex set $X$ and diameter $D$. Let $A$ denote the adjacency matrix of $Γ$. For a vertex $x\in X$ and for $0 \leq i \leq D$, let $E^*_i(x)$ denote the projection matrix to the $i$th subconstituent space of $Γ$ with respect to $x$. The Terwilliger algebra $T(x)$ of $Γ$ with respect to $x$ is the semisimple subalgebra of $\mathrm{Mat}_X(\mathbb{C})$ generated by $A, E^*_0(x), E^*_1(x), \ldots, E^*_D(x)$. Let $V$ denote a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space consisting of complex column vectors with rows indexed by $X$. We say $Γ$ is pseudo-vertex-transitive whenever for any vertices $x,y \in X$, there exists a $\mathbb{C}$-vector space isomorphism $ρ:V\to V$ such that $(ρA - A ρ)V=0$ and $(ρE^*_i(x) - E^*_i(y)ρ)V=0$ for all $0\leq i \leq D$. In this paper, we discuss pseudo-vertex transitivity for distance-regular graphs with diameter $D\in \{2,3,4\}$. For $D=2$, we show that a strongly regular graph is pseudo-vertex-transitive if and only if all its local graphs have the same spectrum. For $D = 3$, we consider the Taylor graphs and show that they are pseudo-vertex transitive. For $D=4$, we consider the antipodal tight graphs and show that they are pseudo-vertex transitive.

Two conjectured strengthenings of Turán's theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate two conjectured spectral graph theoretic strengthenings of Turán's theorem. Let $μ_1 \ge \ldots \ge μ_n$ denote the eigenvalues of a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges and clique number $ω(G)$. The concise version of Turán's theorem is that $n/(n - d)$ is a lower bound for the clique number $ω(G)$, where $d$ is the average degree. Our first conjecture is that $d$ can be replaced in this bound with $\sqrt{s^+}$, where $s^+$ is the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues. We prove this conjecture for triangle-free, weakly perfect and Kneser graphs and for almost all graphs. We have also used various software tools to search for a counter-example. Nikiforov proved a spectral version of Turán's theorem that \[ μ_1^2 \le \frac{2m(ω(G) - 1)}{ω(G)}, \] and Bollobás and Nikiforov conjectured that for $G \not = K_n$ \[ μ_1^2 + μ_2^2 \le \frac{2m(ω(G) - 1)}{ω(G)}. \] For our second conjecture, we propose that for all graphs $(μ_1^2 + μ_2^2)$ in this inequality can be replaced by the sum of the squares of the $ω(G)$ largest eigenvalues, provided they are positive. We prove the conjecture for weakly perfect, Kneser, and classes of strongly regular graphs. We also provide experimental evidence and describe how the bound can be applied. Liu and Ning published a wide-ranging paper entitled ``Unsolved Problems in spectral graph theory'', and these two conjectures were placed second and fourth in their list of such problems.

Distance-regular graphs obtained from the Mathieu groups
In this paper we construct distance-regular graphs admitting a transitive action of the five sporadic simple groups discovered by E. Mathieu, the Mathieu groups $M_{11}$, $M_{12}$, $M_{22}$, $M_{23}$ and $M_{24}$. From the code spanned by the adjacency matrix of the strongly regular graph with parameters (176,70,18,34) we obtain block designs having the full automorphism groups isomorphic to the Higman-Sims finite simple group. Further, we discuss a possibility of permutation decoding of the codes spanned by the adjacency matrices of the graphs constructed and find small PD-sets for some of the codes.
