Extremal values of degree-based entropies of bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the bipartite graphs that minimize the (first-degree based) entropy, among all bipartite graphs of given size, or given size and (upper bound on the) order. The extremal graphs turn out to be complete bipartite graphs, or nearly complete bipartite. Here we make use of an equivalent representation of bipartite graphs by means of Young tableaux, which make it easier to compare the entropy of related graphs. We conclude that the general characterization of the extremal graphs is a difficult problem, due to its connections with number theory, but they are easy to find for specific values of the order $n$ and size $m$. We also give a direct argument to characterize the graphs maximizing the entropy given order and size. We indicate that some of our ideas extend to other degree-based topological indices as well.
The $k$-apex trees with minimum augmented Zagreb index
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a connected graph $G$ on at least three vertices, the augmented Zagreb index (AZI) of $G$ is defined as $$AZI(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\left(\frac{d(u)d(v)}{d(u)+d(v)-2}\right)^{3},$$ being a topological index well-correlated with the formation heat of heptanes and octanes. A $k$-apex tree $G$ is a connected graph admitting a $k$-subset $X\subset V(G)$ such that $G-X$ is a tree, while $G-S$ is not a tree for any $S\subset V(G)$ of cardinality less than $k$. By investigating some structural properties of $k$-apex trees, we identify the graphs minimizing the AZI among all $k$-apex trees on $n$ vertices for $k\ge 4$ and $n\ge 3(k+1)$. The latter solves an open problem posed in [K. Cheng, M. Liu, F. Belardo, {\em Appl. Math. Comput.}, {\bf402} (2021), 126139].

On the Sombor index and Sombor energy of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph of regular graphs
A vertex-degree-based topological index named as Sombor index of a simple graph G with n vertices was recently introduced by I. Gutman. In this paper, we find Sombor index of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph. Also, we determine relation between energy and Sombor energy of m-splitting graph and m-shadow graph of k-regular graph.

The Normalized Laplacian Spectrum Analysis of Fractal Mobius Octagonal Networks and its Applications
The study and calculation of spectrum of networks can be used to describe networks structure and quantify analysis of networks performance. The fractal Möbius octagonal networks, denoted by $Q_n$, is derived from the inverse identification of the opposite lateral edges of fractal linear octagonal networks. In this paper, the normalized Laplacian spectrum of $Q_n$ is determined by two matrices $\mathcal {L}_A$ and $\mathcal {L}_S$. As an important application of our results, some topological indices (multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, the number of spanning trees) formulas of $Q_n$ are obtained.
Maximal Independent Sets in Polygonal Cacti
Counting the number of maximal independent sets of graphs was started over $50$ years ago by Erdős and Mooser. The problem has been continuously studied with a number of variations. Interestingly, when the maximal condition of an independent set is removed, such the concept presents one of topological indices in molecular graphs, the so called Merrifield-Simmons index. In this paper, we applied the concept of bivariate generating function to establish the recurrence relations of the numbers of maximal independent sets of regualr $n$-gonal cacti when $3 \leq n \leq 6$. By the ideas on meromorphic functions and the growth of power series coefficients, the asymptotic behaviors through simple functions of these recurrence relations have been established.
Upper and Lower Bounds for Generalized Wiener Indices on unicyclic graphs
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of generalizations of the Wiener Index and to characterize the set of extremal graphs with respect to them. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs.

Equiseparability on Terminal Wiener Index and Distances
Teminal Wiener index is one of the commonly used topological index in mathematical chemistry. If two or more chemical compounds have the same terminal Wiener index then they will have similar physico-chemical properties. In this work we propose a new method for constructing equiseparable trees w.r.t terminal Wiener index. The existing method is based on the number of pendent vertices but the proposed method is based on distance parameters.
Further Results on Topological Indices of Two Corona Variants of Graph Products
Graph operations are crucial for building complicated network architectures from simple graphs. In [7], authors defined two new variants of Corona product and investigated some topological indices. In this paper, we extended the work and found the formulas of forgotten, first hyper Zagreb, and reduced second Zagreb indices for Corona join product and sub-division vertex join products of graphs.

On trees with extremal extended spectral radius
Let G be a simple connected graph with n vertices, and let d_i be the degree of the vertex v_i in G. The extended adjacency matrix of G is defined so that the ij-entry is 1/2(d_i/d_j+d_j/d_i) if the vertices v_i and v_j are adjacent in G, and 0 otherwise. This matrix was originally introduced for developing novel topological indices used in the QSPR/QSAR studies. In this paper, we consider extremal problems of the largest eigenvalue of the extended adjacency matrix (also known as the extended spectral radius) of trees. We show that among all trees of order n>= 5, the path Pn(resp., the star Sn) uniquely minimizes (resp., maximizes) the extended spectral radius. We also determine the first five trees with the maximal extended spectral radius.
On $k$-dprime Divisor Function Graph
Let $p$ and $q$ be distinct primes. The \textit{semiprime divisor function graph} denoted by $G_{D(pq)}$, is the graph with vertex set $V(G_{D(pq)})=\{1,p,q,pq\}$ and edge set $E(G_{D(pq)})=\{\{1,p\}, \{1,q\},\{1,pq\},\{p,pq\},\{q,pq\}\}$. The semiprime divisor function graph is a special type of divisor function graph $G_{D(n)}$ in which $n=pq$. Recently, the energy and some indices of semiprime divisor function graph have been determined. In this paper, we introduce a natural extension to the semiprime divisor function graph which we call the \textit{$k$-dprime divisor function graph}. Moreover, we present results on some distance-based and degree-based topological indices of $k$-dprime divisor function graph. We end the paper by giving some open problems.

The biharmonic index of connected graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and $d_{B}^2(u,v)$ be the biharmonic distance between two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The biharmonic index $BH(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $$BH(G)=\frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{u\in V(G)}\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)}d_{B}^2(u,v)=n\sum\limits_{i=2}^{n}\frac{1}{λ_i^2(G)},$$ where $λ_i(G)$ is the $i$-th smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of $G$ with $n$ vertices. In this paper, we provide the mathematical relationships between the biharmonic index and some classic topological indices: the first Zagreb index, the forgotten topological index and the Kirchhoff index. In addition, the extremal value on the biharmonic index for trees and firefly graphs of fixed order are given. Finally, some graph operations on the biharmonic index are presented.
Mean Sombor index
We introduce a degree-based variable topological index inspired on the power (or generalized) mean. We name this new index as the mean Sombor index: $mSO_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} \left[\left( d_u^α+d_v^α\right) /2 \right]^{1/α}$. Here, $uv$ denotes the edge of the graph $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $α\in \mathbb{R} \backslash \{0\}$. We also consider the limit cases $mSO_{α\to 0}(G)$ and $mSO_{α\to\pm\infty}(G)$. Indeed, for given values of $α$, the mean Sombor index is related to well-known topological indices such as the inverse sum indeg index, the reciprocal Randic index, the first Zagreb index, the Stolarsky--Puebla index and several Sombor indices. Moreover, through a quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) analysis we show that $mSO_α(G)$ correlates well with several physicochemical properties of octane isomers. Some mathematical properties of mean Sombor indices as well as bounds and new relationships with known topological indices are also discussed.
Stolarsky-Puebla index
We introduce a degree-based variable topological index inspired on the Stolarsky mean (known as the generalization of the logarithmic mean). We name this new index as the Stolarsky-Puebla index: $SP_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} d_u$, if $d_u=d_v$, and $SP_α(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)} \left[\left( d_u^α-d_v^α\right)/\left( α(d_u-d_v\right)\right]^{1/(α-1)}$, otherwise. Here, $uv$ denotes the edge of the network $G$ connecting the vertices $u$ and $v$, $d_u$ is the degree of the vertex $u$, and $α\in \mathbb{R} \backslash \{0,1\}$. Indeed, for given values of $α$, the Stolarsky-Puebla index reproduces well-known topological indices such as the reciprocal Randic index, the first Zagreb index, and several mean Sombor indices. Moreover, we apply these indices to random networks and demonstrate that $\left< SP_α(G) \right>$, normalized to the order of the network, scale with the corresponding average degree $\left< d \right>$.

On Sombor coindex of graphs
Published in Communications in Combinatorics and Optimization, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the recently introduced topological index, the Somber index, we define a new topological index of a graph in this paper, we call it Sombor coindex. The Sombor coindex is defined by considering analogous contributions from the pairs of non-adjacent vertices, capturing, thus, and quantifying a possible influence of remote pairs of vertices. We give several properties of the Somber coindex and its relations to the Sombor index, the Zagreb (co)indices, forgotten coindex and other important graph parameters. We also compute the bounds of the Somber coindex of some graph operations and compute the Sombor coindex for some chemical graphs as an application.

Extremal problems on Sombor indices of unicyclic graphs with a given diameter
Published • View PublicationBIB
Sombor index is a novel topological index, which was introduced by Gutman and defined for a graph $G$ as $SO(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_{u}^{2}+d_{v}^{2}}$, where $d_{u}=d_{G}(u)$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in graph $G$. Extremal problems on the Sombor index for trees with a given diameter has been considered by Chen et al. [H. Chen, W. Li, J. Wang, Extremal values on the Sombor index of trees, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 87 (2022) 23--49] and Li et al. [S. Li, Z. Wang, M. Zhang, On the extremal Sombor index of trees with a given diameter, Appl. Math. Comput. 416 (2022) 126731]. As an extension of results introduces above, we determine the maximum Sombor indices for unicyclic graphs with a fixed order and given diameter.

The Wiener Index of Signed Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Wiener index of a graph $W(G)$ is a well studied topological index for graphs. An outstanding problem of Šolt{é}s is to find graphs $G$ such that $W(G)=W(G-v)$ for all vertices $v\in V(G)$, with the only known example being $G=C_{11}$. We relax this problem by defining a notion of Wiener indices for signed graphs, which we denote by $W_σ(G)$, and under this relaxation we construct many signed graphs such that $W_σ(G)=W_σ(G-v)$ for all $v\in V(G)$. This ends up being related to a problem of independent interest, which asks when it is possible to $2$-color the edges of a graph $G$ such that there is a path between any two vertices of $G$ which uses each color the same number of times.
On the vertex-degree based invariants of digraphs
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraphs without isolated vertices. A vertex-degree based invariant $I(D)$ related to a real function $\varphi$ of $D$ is defined as a summation over all arcs, $I(D) = \frac{1}{2}\sum_{uv\in A}{\varphi(d_u^+,d_v^-)}$, where $d_u^+$ (resp. $d_u^-$) denotes the out-degree (resp. in-degree) of a vertex $u$. In this paper, we give the extremal values and extremal digraphs of $I(D)$ over all digraphs with $n$ non-isolated vertices. Applying these results, we obtain the extremal values of some vertex-degree based topological indices of digraphs, such as the Randić index, the Zagreb index, the sum-connectivity index, the $GA$ index, the $ABC$ index and the harmonic index, and the corresponding extremal digraphs.
Distance Eigenvalues, Forwarding Indices, and Distance-based Topological Indices of Complement of Two Circulant Networks
Let $n$ and $a$ be positive integers such that $2\leq a\leq \frac{n}{2}$. In this short note, we compute for the exact value of the distance spectral radius, vertex-forwarding index, and some distance-based topological indices of the complement of circulant networks $C_n(1,a)$ and $C_{m^h}(1,m,m^2,\ldots,m^{h-1})$. For $a\neq \frac{n}{2}$, the circulant $C_n(1,a)$ is called a double loop network while the circulant $C_{m^h}(1,m,m^2,\ldots,m^{h-1})$ is called the multiplicative circulant network on $m^h$ vertices.

On the first Banhatti-Sombor index
Let $d_v$ be the degree of the vertex $v$ in a connected graph $G$. The first Banhatti-Sombor index of $G$ is defined as $BSO(G) =\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{\frac{1}{d^2_u}+\frac{1}{d^2_v}}$, which is a new vertex-degree-based topological index introduced by Kulli. In this paper, the mathematical relations between the first Banhatti-Sombor index and some other well-known vertex-degree-based topological indices are established. In addition, the trees extremal with respect to the first Banhatti-Sombor index on trees and chemical trees are characterized, respectively.

Extremal cacti with respect to Sombor index
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a novel topological index, Sombor index, was introduced by Gutman, defined as $SO(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_{u}^{2}+d_{v}^{2}}$, where $d_{u}$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$. In this paper, we first determine the maximum Sombor index among cacti with $n$ vertices and $t$ cycles, then determine the maximum Sombor index among cacti with perfect matchings. We also characterize corresponding maximum cacti.
