The Sombor index of trees and unicyclic graphs with given maximum degree
Let $d_G(v)$ be the degree of the vertex $v$ in a graph $G$. The Sombor index of $G$ is defined as $SO(G) =\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d^2_G(u)+d^2_G(v)}$, which is a new degree-based topological index introduced by Gutman. Let $\mathscr{T}_{n,Δ}$ and $\mathscr{U}_{n,Δ}$ be the set of trees and unicyclic graphs with $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$, respectively. In this paper, the tree and the unicyclic graph with minimum Sombor index among $\mathscr{T}_{n,Δ}$ and $\mathscr{U}_{n,Δ}$ are characterized.
Upper and lower bounds for topological indices on unicyclic graphs
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of topological indices restricted to unicyclic graphs and to characterize the set of extremal unicyclic graphs with respect to them. This family includes variable first Zagreb, variable sum exdeg, multiplicative second Zagreb and Narumi-Katayama indices. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs, fixing or not the maximum degree or the number of pendant vertices.

Ordering chemical graphs by Sombor indices and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Topological indices are a class of numerical invariants that predict certain physical and chemical properties of molecules. Recently, two novel topological indices, named as Sombor index and reduced Sombor index, were introduced by Gutman, defined as $$SO(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_{G}^{2}(u)+d_{G}^{2}(v)},$$ $$SO_{red}(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{(d_{G}(u)-1)^{2}+(d_{G}(v)-1)^{2}},$$ where $d_{G}(u)$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In this paper, our aim is to order the chemical trees, chemical unicyclic graphs, chemical bicyclic graphs and chemical tricyclic graphs with respect to Sombor index and reduced Sombor index. We determine the first fourteen minimum chemical trees, the first four minimum chemical unicyclic graphs, the first three minimum chemical bicyclic graphs, the first seven minimum chemical tricyclic graphs. At last, we consider the applications of reduced Sombor index to octane isomers.
New upper bounds for the forgotten index among bicyclic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The forgotten topological index of a graph $G$, denoted by $F(G)$, is defined as the sum of weights $d(u)^{2}+d(v)^{2}$ over all edges $uv$ of $G$ , where $d(u)$ denotes the degree of a vertex $u$. In this paper, we give sharp upper bounds of the F-index (forgotten topological index) over bicyclic graphs, in terms of the order and maximum degree.

On Intersection Graph of Dihedral Group
Let $G$ be a finite group. The intersection graph of $G$ is a graph whose vertex set is the set of all proper non-trivial subgroups of $G$ and two distinct vertices $H$ and $K$ are adjacent if and only if $H\cap K \neq \{e\}$, where $e$ is the identity of the group $G$. In this paper, we investigate some properties and exploring some topological indices such as Wiener, Hyper-Wiener, first and second Zagreb, Schultz, Gutman and eccentric connectivity indices of the intersection graph of $D_{2n}$ for $n=p^2$, $p$ is prime. We also find the metric dimension and the resolving polynomial of the intersection graph of $D_{2p^2}$.

On correlation of hyperbolic volumes of fullerenes with their properties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We observe that fullerene graphs are one-skeletons of polyhedra, which can be realized with all dihedral angles equal to $π/2$ in a hyperbolic 3-dimensional space. One of the most important invariants of such a polyhedron is its volume. We are referring this volume as a hyperbolic volume of a fullerene. It is known that some topological indices of graphs of chemical compounds serve as strong descriptors and correlate with chemical properties. We demonstrate that hyperbolic volume of fullerenes correlates with few important topological indices and so, hyperbolic volume can serve as a chemical descriptor too. The correlation between hyperbolic volume of fullerene and its Wiener index suggested few conjectures on volumes of hyperbolic polyhedra. These conjectures are confirmed for the initial list of fullerenes.
On the arithmetic-geometric index of graphs
Very recently, the first geometric-arithmetic index $GA$ and arithmetic-geometric index $AG$ were introduced in mathematical chemistry. In the present paper, we first obtain some lower and upper bounds on $AG$ and characterize the extremal graphs. We also establish various relations between $AG$ and other topological indices, such as the first geometric-arithmetic index $GA$, atom-bond-connectivity index $ABC$, symmetric division deg index $SDD$, chromatic number $χ$ and so on. Finally, we present some sufficient conditions of $GA(G)>GA(G-e)$ or $AG(G)>AG(G-e)$ for an edge $e$ of a graph $G$. In particular, for the first geometric-arithmetic index, we also give a refinement of Bollobás-Erdős-type theorem obtained in [3].

The extremal graphs of order trees and their topological indices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, D. Vuki$\check{c}$evi$\acute{c}$ and J. Sedlar in \cite{Vuki} introduced an order "$\preceq$" on $\mathcal{T}_n$, the set of trees on $n$ vertices, such that the topological index $F$ of a graph is a function defined on the order set $\langle\mathcal{T}_n,\preceq\rangle$. It provides a new approach to determine the extremal graphs with respect to topological index $F$. By using the method they determined the common maximum and/or minimum graphs of $\mathcal{T}_n$ with respect to topological indices of Wiener type and anti-Wiener type. Motivated by their researches we further study the order set $\langle\mathcal{T}_n,\preceq\rangle$ and give a criterion to determine its order, which enable us to get the common extremal graphs in four prescribed subclasses of $\langle\mathcal{T}_n,\preceq\rangle$. All these extremal graphs are confirmed to be the common maximum and/or minimum graphs with respect to the topological indices of Wiener type and anti-Wiener type. Additionally, we calculate the exact values of Wiener index for the extremal graphs in the order sets $\langle\mathcal{C}(n,k),\preceq\rangle$, $\langle\mathcal{T}_{n}(q),\preceq\rangle$ and $\langle\mathcal{T}_{n}^Δ,\preceq\rangle$.

General cut method for computing Szeged-like topological indices with applications to molecular graphs
Published in Int. J. Quantum Chem. 121 (2021) e26530 • View PublicationBIB
Szeged, PI and Mostar indices are some of the most investigated distance-based molecular descriptors. Recently, many different variations of these topological indices appeared in the literature and sometimes they are all together called Szeged-like topological indices. In this paper, we formally introduce the concept of a general Szeged-like topological index, which includes all mentioned indices and also infinitely many other topological indices that can be defined in a similar way. As the main result of the paper, we provide a cut method for computing a general Szeged-like topological index for any strength-weighted graph. This greatly generalizes various methods known for some of the mentioned indices and therefore rounds off such investigations. Moreover, we provide applications of our main result to benzenoid systems, phenylenes, and coronoid systems, which are well-known families of molecular graphs. In particular, closed-form formulas for some subfamilies of these graphs are deduced.
New Eccentricity Based Topological Indices of Total Transformation Graphs
The eccentric-connectivity index of a graph G is the sum of the products of the eccentricity and the degree of each vertex in G. In this paper, we define four new invariants related to the eccentric-connectivity index and obtain upper bounds for total transformation graphs which are some generalizations of total graph.

Topological Indices Over Nonzero Component Graph of a Finite Dimensional Vector Space
The study of graphs associated with of various algebraic structures is an emerging topic in algebraic graph theory. Recently, the concept of nonzero component graph of a finite dimensional vector space $Γ(\mathbb{V})$ was put forward by Das \cite{5}. In this paper, we study some degree based topological indices over $Γ(\mathbb{V})$ the derived graphs of $Γ(\mathbb{V})$.

Bilinear matrix equation characterizes Laplacian and distance matrices of weighted trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known from the algebraic graph theory that if $L$ is the Laplacian matrix of some tree $G$ with a vertex degree sequence $\mathbf{d}=(d_1, ..., d_n)^\top$ and $D$ is its distance matrix, then $LD+2I=(2\cdot\mathbf{1}-\mathbf{d})\mathbf{1}^\top$, where $\mathbf{1}$ is an all-ones column vector. We prove that if this matrix identity holds for the Laplacian matrix of some graph $G$ with a degree sequence $\mathbf{d}$ and for some matrix $D$, then $G$ is essentially a tree, and $D$ is its distance matrix. This result immediately generalizes to weighted graphs. If the matrix $D$ is symmetric, the lower triangular part of this matrix identity is redundant and can be omitted. Therefore, the above bilinear matrix equation in $L$, $D$, and $\mathbf{d}$ characterizes trees in terms of their Laplacian and distance matrices. Applications to the extremal graph theory (especially, to topological index optimization and to optimal tree problems) and to road topology design are discussed.
The expected subtree number index in random polyphenylene and spiro chains
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 285(2020) 483-492 • View PublicationBIB
Subtree number index $\emph{STN}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the number of nonempty subtrees of $G$. It is a structural and counting based topological index that has received more and more attention in recent years. In this paper we first obtain exact formulas for the expected values of subtree number index of random polyphenylene and spiro chains, which are molecular graphs of a class of unbranched multispiro molecules and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, we establish a relation between the expected values of the subtree number indices of a random polyphenylene and its corresponding hexagonal squeeze. We also present the average values for subtree number indices with respect to the set of all polyphenylene and spiro chains with $n$ hexagons.

The maximal tree with respect to the exponential of the second Zagreb index
The second Zagreb index is $M_2(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}d_{G}(u)d_{G}(v)$. It was found to occur in certain approximate expressions of the total $π$-electron energy of alternant hydrocarbons and used by various researchers in their QSPR and QSAR studies. Recently the exponential of a vertex-degree-based topological index was introduced. It is known that among all trees with $n$ vertices, the exponential of the second Zagreb index $e^{M_2}$ attains its minimum value in the path $P_n$. In this paper, we show that $e^{M_2}$ attains its maximum value in the balanced double star with $n$ vertices and solve an open problem proposed by Cruz and Rada [R. Cruz, J. Rada, The path and the star as extremal values of vertex-degree-based topological indices among trees, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 82 (3) (2019) 715-732].
Bounding the $k$-Steiner Wiener and Wiener-type indices of trees in terms of eccentric sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
The eccentric sequence of a connected graph $G$ is the nondecreasing sequence of the eccentricities of its vertices. The Wiener index of $G$ is the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices of $G$. The unique trees that minimise the Wiener index among all trees with a given eccentric sequence were recently determined by the present authors. In this paper we show that these results hold not only for the Wiener index, but for a large class of distance-based topological indices which we term Wiener-type indices. Particular cases of this class include the hyper-Wiener index, the Harary index, the generalised Wiener index $W^λ$ for $λ>0$ and $λ<0$, and the reciprocal complementary Wiener index. Our results imply and unify known bounds on these Wiener-type indices for trees of given order and diameter. We also present similar results for the $k$-Steiner Wiener index of trees with a given eccentric sequence. The Steiner distance of a set $A\subseteq V(G)$ is theminimum number of edges in a subtree of $G$ whose vertex set contains $A$, and the $k$-Steiner Wiener index is the sum of distances of all $k$-element subsets of $V(G)$. As a corollary, we obtain a sharp lower bound on the $k$-Steiner Wiener index of trees with given order and diameter, and determine in which cases the extremal tree is unique, thereby correcting an error in the literature.

Five results on maximizing topological indices in graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23, no. 3, Graph Theory (November 15, 2021) dmtcs:6896 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we prove a collection of results on graphical indices. We determine the extremal graphs attaining the maximal generalized Wiener index (e.g. the hyper-Wiener index) among all graphs with given matching number or independence number. This generalizes some work of Dankelmann, as well as some work of Chung. We also show alternative proofs for two recents results on maximizing the Wiener index and external Wiener index by deriving it from earlier results. We end with proving two conjectures. We prove that the maximum for the difference of the Wiener index and the eccentricity is attained by the path if the order $n$ is at least $9$ and that the maximum weighted Szeged index of graphs of given order is attained by the balanced complete bipartite graphs.
Relations between some topological indices and the line graph

The concepts of geometric-arithmetic and harmonic indices were introduced in the area of chemical graph theory recently. They have proven to correlate well with physical and chemical properties of some molecules. The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities involving the first Zagreb, the harmonic, and the geometric-arithmetic $GA_1$ indices. Furthermore, inequalities relating these indices and line graphs are proven.
Convexity deficit of benzenoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012, a family of benzenoids was introduced by Cruz, Gutman, and Rada, which they called convex benzenoids. In this paper we introduce the convexity deficit, a new topological index intended for benzenoids and, more generally, fusenes. This index measures by how much a given fusene departs from convexity. It is defined in terms of the boundary-edges code. In particular, convex benzenoids are exactly the benzenoids having convexity deficit equal to 0. Quasi-convex benzenoids form the family of non-convex benzenoids that are closest to convex, i.e., they have convexity deficit equal to 1. Finally, we investigate convexity deficit of several important families of benzenoids.

The asymptotic value of energy for matrices with degree-distance-based entries of random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G=(V, E)$ and $i, j\in V$, denote the distance between $i$ and $j$ in $G$ by $D(i, j)$ and the degrees of $i$, $j$ by $d_i$, $d_j$, respectively. Let $f(D(i, j), d_{i}, d_{j})$ be a function symmetric in $i$ and $j$. Define a matrix $W_f(G)$, called the weighted distance matrix, of $G$, with the $ij$-entry $W_f(G)(i, j)=f(D(i, j), d_{i}, d_{j})$ if $i\neq j$ and $W_f(G)(i, j)=0$ if $i=j$. In this paper, we prove that if the symmetric function $f$ satisfies that $f(D(i, j), (1+o(1))np, (1+o(1))np)=(1+o(1))f(D(i, j), np, np)$, then for almost all graphs $G_p$ in the $Erd\ddot{o}s$-$R\acute{e}nyi$ random graph model $\mathcal{G}_{n, p}$, the energy of $W_f(G_p)$ is $\{(\frac{8}{3π}\sqrt{p(1-p)}+o(1))\cdot|f(1, np, np)-f(2, np, np)|+o(|f(2, np, np)|)\}\cdot n^{3/2}$. As a consequence, we give the asymptotic values of energies of a variety of weighted distance matrices with function $f$ from distance-based only and mixed with degree-distance-based topological indices of chemical use. This generalizes our former result with only degree-based weights.
Computational and analytical studies of the Randić index in Erdös-Rényi models
In this work we perform computational and analytical studies of the Randić index $R(G)$ in Erdös-Rényi models $G(n,p)$ characterized by $n$ vertices connected independently with probability $p \in (0,1)$. First, from a detailed scaling analysis, we show that $\left\langle \overline{R}(G) \right\rangle = \left\langle R(G)\right\rangle/(n/2)$ scales with the product $ξ\approx np$, so we can define three regimes: a regime of mostly isolated vertices when $ξ< 0.01$ ($R(G)\approx 0$), a transition regime for $0.01 < ξ< 10$ (where $0<R(G)< n/2$), and a regime of almost complete graphs for $ξ> 10$ ($R(G)\approx n/2$). Then, motivated by the scaling of $\left\langle \overline{R}(G) \right\rangle$, we analytically (i) obtain new relations connecting $R(G)$ with other topological indices and characterize graphs which are extremal with respect to the relations obtained and (ii) apply these results in order to obtain inequalities on $R(G)$ for graphs in Erdös-Rényi models.
