Deciding if a DAG is Interesting is Hard
The \emph{interestingness score} of a directed path $Π= e_1, e_2, e_3, \dots, e_\ell$ in an edge-weighted directed graph $G$ is defined as $\texttt{score}(Π) := \sum_{i=1}^\ell w(e_i) \cdot \log{(i+1)}$, where $w(e_i)$ is the weight of the edge $e_i$. We consider two optimization problems that arise in the analysis of Mapper graphs, which is a powerful tool in topological data analysis. In the IP problem, the objective is to find a collection $\mathcal{P}$ of edge-disjoint paths in $G$ with the maximum total interestingness score. %; that is, two raised to the power of the sum of the weights of the paths in $\mathcal{P}$. For $k \in \mathbb{N}$, the $k$-IP problem is a variant of the IP problem with the extra constraint that each path in $\mathcal{P}$ must have exactly $k$ edges. Kalyanaraman, Kamruzzaman, and Krishnamoorthy (Journal of Computational Geometry, 2019) claim that both IP and $k$-IP (for $k \geq 3$) are NP-complete. We point out some inaccuracies in their proofs. Furthermore, we show that both problems are NP-hard in directed acyclic graphs.

A graph $G$ is a pairwise compatibility graph (PCG) if there exists an edge-weighted tree and an interval $I$, such that each leaf of the tree is a vertex of the graph, and there is an edge $\{ x, y \}$ in $G$ if and only if the weight of the path in the tree connecting $x$ and $y$ lies within the interval $I$. Originating in phylogenetics, PCGs are closely connected to important graph classes like leaf-powers and multi-threshold graphs, widely applied in bioinformatics, especially in understanding evolutionary processes. In this paper we introduce two natural generalizations of the PCG class, namely $k$-OR-PCG and $k$-AND-PCG, which are the classes of graphs that can be expressed as union and intersection, respectively, of $k$ PCGs. These classes can be also described using the concepts of the covering number and the intersection dimension of a graph in relation to the PCG class. We investigate how the classes of OR-PCG and AND-PCG are related to PCGs, $k$-interval-PCGs and other graph classes known in the literature. In particular, we provide upper bounds on the minimum $k$ for which an arbitrary graph $G$ belongs to $k$-interval-PCGs, $k$-OR-PCG or $k$-AND-PCG classes. For particular graph classes we improve these general bounds. Moreover, we show that, for every integer $k$, there exists a bipartite graph that is not in the $k$-interval-PCGs class, proving that there is no finite $k$ for which the $k$-interval-PCG class contains all the graphs. This answers an open question of Ahmed and Rahman from 2017. Finally, using a Ramsey theory argument, we show that for any $k$, there exists graphs that are not in $k$-AND-PCG, and graphs that are not in $k$-OR-PCG.
Families of $2$-weights of some particular graphs
Let ${\cal G}=(G,w) $ be a positive-weighted graph, that is a graph $G$ endowed with a function $w$ from the edge set of $G$ to the set of positive real numbers; for any distinct vertices $i,j $, we define $D_{i,j}({\cal G})$ to be the weight of the path in $G$ joining $i$ and $j$ with minimum weight. In this paper we fix a particular class of graphs and we give a criterion to establish whether, given a family of positive real numbers $\{D_I\}_{I \in { \{1,...., n\} \choose 2}}$, there exists a positive-weighted graph ${\cal G} =(G,w) $ in the class we have fixed, with vertex set equal to $\{1,....,n\}$ and such that $D_I ({\cal G}) =D_I$ for any $I \in { \{1,...., n\} \choose 2}$. In particular, the classes of graphs we consider are the following: snakes, caterpillars, polygons, bipartite graphs, complete graphs, planar graphs.
First passage percolation on the Erdős-Rényi random graph

In this paper we explore first passage percolation (FPP) on the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G_n(p_n)$, where each edge is given an independent exponential edge weight with rate 1. In the sparse regime, i.e., when $np_n\to λ>1,$ we find refined asymptotics both for the minimal weight of the path between uniformly chosen vertices in the giant component, as well as for the hopcount (i.e., the number of edges) on this minimal weight path. More precisely, we prove a central limit theorem for the hopcount, with asymptotic mean and variance both equal to $λ/(λ-1)\log{n}$. Furthermore, we prove that the minimal weight centered by $\log{n}/(λ-1)$ converges in distribution. We also investigate the dense regime, where $np_n \to \infty$. We find that although the base graph is a {\it ultra small} (meaning that graph distances between uniformly chosen vertices are $o(\log{n})$), attaching random edge weights changes the geometry of the network completely. Indeed, the hopcount $H_n$ satisfies the universality property that whatever be the value of $p_n$, \ $H_n/\log{n}\to 1$ in probability and, more precisely, $(H_n-β_n\log{n})/\sqrt{\log{n}}$, where $β_n=λ_n/(λ_n-1)$, has a limiting standard normal distribution. The constant $β_n$ can be replaced by 1 precisely when $λ_n\gg \sqrt{\log{n}}$, a case that has appeared in the literature (under stronger conditions on $λ_n$). We also find bounds for the maximal weight and maximal hopcount between vertices in the graph. This paper continues the investigation of FPP initiated by the authors. Compared to the setting on the configuration model studied in \cite{BHHS08}, the proofs presented here are much simpler due to a direct relation between FPP on the Erdős-Rényi random graph and thinned continuous-time branching processes.
