Isometric structure of transportation cost spaces on finite metric spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
The paper is devoted to isometric Banach-space-theoretical structure of transportation cost (TC) spaces on finite metric spaces. The TC spaces are also known as Arens-Eells, Lipschitz-free, or Wasserstein spaces. A new notion of a roadmap pertinent to a transportation problem on a finite metric space has been introduced and used to simplify proofs for the results on representation of TC spaces as quotients of $\ell_1$ spaces on the edge set over the cycle space. A Tolstoi-type theorem for roadmaps is proved, and directed subgraphs of the canonical graphs, which are supports of maximal optimal roadmaps, are characterized. Possible obstacles for a TC space on a finite metric space $X$ preventing them from containing subspaces isometric to $\ell_\infty^n$ have been found in terms of the canonical graph of $X$. The fact that TC spaces on diamond graphs do not contain $\ell_\infty^4$ isometrically has been derived. In addition, a short overview of known results on the isometric structure of TC spaces on finite metric spaces is presented.

The Amplituhedron BCFW Triangulation
Published • View Publication • BIB
The amplituhedron Ank4 is a geometric object, introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka (2013) in the study of scattering amplitudes in quantum field theories. They conjecture that Ank4 admits a decomposition into images of BCFW positroid cells, arising from the Britto--Cachazo--Feng--Witten recurrence (2005). We prove that this conjecture is true.

Parking functions, multi-shuffle, and asymptotic phenomena
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive-integer-valued vector $u=(u_1, \dots, u_m)$ with $u_1<\cdots<u_m$. A $u$-parking function of length $m$ is a sequence $π=(π_1, \dots, π_m)$ of positive integers whose non-decreasing rearrangement $(λ_1, \dots, λ_m)$ satisfies $λ_i\leq u_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq m$. We introduce a combinatorial construction termed a parking function multi-shuffle to generic $u$-parking functions and obtain an explicit characterization of multiple parking coordinates. As an application, we derive various asymptotic probabilistic properties of a uniform $u$-parking function when $u_i=cm+ib$. The asymptotic scenario in the generic situation $c>0$ is in sharp contrast with that of the special situation $c=0$.
Kempe changes in degenerate graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider Kempe changes on the $k$-colorings of a graph on $n$ vertices. If the graph is $(k-1)$-degenerate, then all its $k$-colorings are equivalent up to Kempe changes. However, the sequence between two $k$-colorings that arises from the proof may be exponential in the number of vertices. An intriguing open question is whether it can be turned polynomial. We prove this to be possible under the stronger assumption that the graph has treewidth at most $k-1$. Namely, any two $k$-colorings are equivalent up to $O(kn^2)$ Kempe changes. We investigate other restrictions (list coloring, bounded maximum average degree, degree bounds). As a main result, we derive that given an $n$-vertex graph with maximum degree $Δ$, the $Δ$-colorings are all equivalent up to $O(n^2)$ Kempe changes, unless $Δ= 3$ and some connected component is a 3-prism.

Order in the chaos with examples from graph theory
In randomly created structures (be they natural or artificial) very often there exist ordered substructures. In this Hungarian language scientific essay we will present some of such structures in graph theory. E.g. Rédei's theorem, Ramsey theory, Turán's problem, Hamiltonian cycles in De Bruijn graphs.
State Transfer on Paths with Weighted Loops
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the fidelity of state transfer on an unweighted path on $n$ vertices, where a loop of weight $w$ has been appended at each of the end vertices. It is known that if $w$ is transcendental, then there is pretty good state transfer from one end vertex to the other; we prove a companion result to that fact, namely that there is a dense subset of $[1,\infty)$ such that if $w$ is in that subset, pretty good state transfer between end vertices is impossible. Under mild hypotheses on $w$ and $t$, we derive upper and lower bounds on the fidelity of state transfer between end vertices at readout time $t$. Using those bounds, we localise the readout times for which that fidelity is close to $1$. We also provide expressions for, and bounds on, the sensitivity of the fidelity of state transfer between end vertices, where the sensitivity is with respect to either the readout time or the weight $w$. Throughout, the results rely on detailed knowledge of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the associated adjacency matrix.

Quasiplanar Graphs, String Graphs, and the Erdos-Gallai Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $r$-quasiplanar graph is a graph drawn in the plane with no $r$ pairwise crossing edges. Let $s \geq 3$ be an integer and $r=2^s$. We prove that there is a constant $C$ such that every $r$-quasiplanar graph with $n \geq r$ vertices has at most $n\left(Cs^{-1}\log n\right)^{2s-4}$ edges. A graph whose vertices are continuous curves in the plane, two being connected by an edge if and only if they intersect, is called a string graph. We show that for every $ε>0$, there exists $δ>0$ such that every string graph with $n$ vertices, whose chromatic number is at least $n^ε$ contains a clique of size at least $n^δ$. A clique of this size or a coloring using fewer than $n^ε$ colors can be found by a polynomial time algorithm in terms of the size of the geometric representation of the set of strings. In the process, we use, generalize, and strengthen previous results of Lee, Tomon, and others. All of our theorems are related to geometric variants of the following classical graph-theoretic problem of Erdos, Gallai, and Rogers. Given a $K_r$-free graph on $n$ vertices and an integer $s<r$, at least how many vertices can we find such that the subgraph induced by them is $K_s$-free?
Super graphs on groups, I
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite group. A number of graphs with the vertex set $G$ have been studied, including the power graph, enhanced power graph, and commuting graph. These graphs form a hierarchy under the inclusion of edge sets, and it is useful to study them together. In addition, several authors have considered modifying the definition of these graphs by choosing a natural equivalence relation on the group such as equality, conjugacy, or equal orders, and joining two elements if there are elements in their equivalence class that are adjacent in the original graph. In this way, we enlarge the hierarchy into a second dimension. Using the three graph types and three equivalence relations mentioned gives nine graphs, of which in general only two coincide; we find conditions on the group for some other pairs to be equal. These often define interesting classes of groups, such as EPPO groups, $2$-Engel groups, and Dedekind groups. We study some properties of graphs in this new hierarchy. In particular, we characterize the groups for which the graphs are complete, and in most cases, we characterize the dominant vertices (those joined to all others). Also, we give some results about universality, perfectness, and clique number. The paper ends with some open problems and suggestions for further work.

On the number of high-dimensional partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P_{d}(n)$ denote the number of $n \times \ldots \times n$ $d$-dimensional partitions with entries from $\left\{0,1,\ldots,n\right\}$. Building upon the works of Balogh-Treglown-Wagner and Noel-Scott-Sudakov, we show that when $d \to \infty$, $$P_{d}(n) = 2^{(1+o_{d}(1)) \sqrt{\frac{6}{(d+1)π}} \cdot n^{d}}$$ holds for all $n \geq 1$. This makes progress towards a conjecture of Moshkovitz-Shapira [{\it{Adv. in Math.}} 262 (2014), 1107--1129]. Via the main result of Moshkovitz and Shapira, our estimate also determines asymptotically a Ramsey theoretic parameter related to Erdős-Szekeres-type functions, thus solving a problem of Fox, Pach, Sudakov, and Suk [{\it{Proc. Lond. Math. Soc.}} 105 (2012), 953--982]. Our main result is a new supersaturation theorem for antichains in $[n]^{d}$, which may be of independent interest.
Computational study of non-unitary partitions
Published in Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society 38 (2023) 121--128 • Search Publication
Following Cayley, MacMahon, and Sylvester, define a non-unitary partition to be an integer partition with no part equal to one, and let $ν(n)$ denote the number of non-unitary partitions of size $n$. In a 2021 paper, the sixth author proved a formula to compute $p(n)$ by enumerating only non-unitary partitions of size $n$, and recorded a number of conjectures regarding the growth of $ν(n)$ as $n\to \infty$. Here we refine and prove some of these conjectures. For example, we prove $p(n) \sim ν(n)\sqrt{n/ζ(2)}$ as $n\to \infty$, and give Ramanujan-like congruences between $p(n)$ and $ν(n)$ such as $p(5n)\equiv ν(5n)\ (\operatorname{mod} 5)$.

The covering numbers of rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A cover of an associative (not necessarily commutative nor unital) ring $R$ is a collection of proper subrings of $R$ whose set-theoretic union equals $R$. If such a cover exists, then the covering number $σ(R)$ of $R$ is the cardinality of a minimal cover, and a ring $R$ is called $σ$-elementary if $σ(R) < σ(R/I)$ for every nonzero two-sided ideal $I$ of $R$. If $R$ is a ring with unity, then we define the unital covering number $σ_u(R)$ to be the size of a minimal cover of $R$ by subrings that contain $1_R$ (if such a cover exists), and $R$ is $σ_u$-elementary if $σ_u(R) < σ_u(R/I)$ for every nonzero two-sided ideal of $R$. In this paper, we classify all $σ$-elementary unital rings and determine their covering numbers. Building on this classification, we are further able to classify all $σ_u$-elementary rings and prove $σ_u(R) = σ(R)$ for every $σ_u$-elementary ring $R$. We also prove that, if $R$ is a ring without unity with a finite cover, then there exists a unital ring $R'$ such that $σ(R) = σ_u(R')$, which in turn provides a complete list of all integers that are the covering number of a ring. Moreover, if \[\mathscr{E}(N) := \{m : m \le N, σ(R) = m \text{ for some ring } R\},\] then we show that $|\mathscr{E}(N)| = Θ(N/\log(N))$, which proves that almost all integers are not covering numbers of a ring.

Fault-tolerant Identifying Codes in Special Classes of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A detection system, modeled in a graph, is composed of "detectors" positioned at a subset of vertices in order to uniquely locate an ``intruder" at any vertex. \emph{Identifying codes} use detectors that can sense the presence or absence of an intruder within distance one. We introduce a fault-tolerant identifying code called a \emph{redundant identifying code}, which allows at most one detector to go offline or be removed without disrupting the detection system. In real-world applications, this would be a necessary feature, as it would allow for maintenance on individual components without disabling the entire system. Specifically, we prove that the problem of determining the lowest cardinality of an identifying code for an arbitrary graph is NP-complete, we determine the bounds on the lowest cardinality for special classes of graphs, including trees, cylinders, and cubic graphs.

Sharp bounds of the $A_α$-spectral radii of mixed trees
A mixed tree is a tree in which both directed arcs and undirected edges may exist. Let $T$ be a mixed tree with $n$ vertices and $m$ arcs, where an undirected edge is counted twice as arcs. Let $A$ be the adjacency matrix of $T$. For $α\in[0,1]$, the matrix $A_α$ of $T$ is defined to be $αD^++(1-α)A$, where $D^+$ is the the diagonal out-degree matrix of $T$. The $A_α$-spectral radius of $T$ is the largest real eigenvalue of $A_α$. We will give a sharp upper bound and a sharp lower bound of the $A_α$-spectral radius of $T$.
The generalized porous medium equation on graphs: existence and uniqueness of solutions with $\ell^1$ data
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study solutions of the generalized porous medium equation on infinite graphs. For nonnegative or nonpositive integrable data, we prove the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions on any graph. For changing sign integrable data, we show existence and uniqueness under extra assumptions such as local finiteness or a uniform lower bound on the node measure.

A positive fraction Erdos-Szekeres theorem and its applications
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry 71 (2024), 308-325 • View Publication • BIB
A famous theorem of Erdos and Szekeres states that any sequence of $n$ distinct real numbers contains a monotone subsequence of length at least $\sqrt{n}$. Here, we prove a positive fraction version of this theorem. For $n > (k-1)^2$, any sequence $A$ of $n$ distinct real numbers contains a collection of subsets $A_1,\ldots, A_k \subset A$, appearing sequentially, all of size $s=Ω(n/k^2)$, such that every subsequence $(a_1,\ldots, a_k)$, with $a_i \in A_i$, is increasing, or every such subsequence is decreasing. The subsequence $S = (A_1,\ldots, A_k)$ described above is called block-monotone of depth $k$ and block-size $s$. Our theorem is asymptotically best possible and follows from a more general Ramsey-type result for monotone paths, which we find of independent interest. We also show that for any positive integer $k$, any finite sequence of distinct real numbers can be partitioned into $O(k^2\log k)$ block-monotone subsequences of depth at least $k$, upon deleting at most $(k-1)^2$ entries. We apply our results to mutually avoiding planar point sets and biarc diagrams in graph drawing.

Combinatorics of Centers of 0-Hecke Algebras in Type A
A basis of the center of the 0-Hecke algebra of an arbitrary finite Coxeter group was described by He in 2015. This basis is indexed by certain equivalence classes of the Coxeter group whose explicit description is rather complicated. Even their number is not obvious. We consider case of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Building on work of Geck, Kim and Pfeiffer, we obtain a complete set of representatives of the equivalence classes. This set is naturally parametrized by certain compositions of $n$ called maximal. It follows that the maximal compositions of $n$ index the basis of the center of the 0-Hecke algebra of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We then develop an explicit combinatorial description for the equivalence classes that are parametrized by the maximal compositions whose odd parts form a hook.

Three-chromatic geometric hypergraphs
We prove that for any planar convex body C there is a positive integer m with the property that any finite point set P in the plane can be three-colored such that there is no translate of C containing at least m points of P, all of the same color. As a part of the proof, we show a strengthening of the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture. Surprisingly, the proof also relies on the two dimensional case of the Illumination conjecture.
On the diameter of Schrijver graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For $k \geq 1$ and $n \geq 2k$, the well known Kneser graph $\operatorname{KG}(n,k)$ has all $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element set as vertices; two such subsets are adjacent if they are disjoint. Schrijver constructed a vertex-critical subgraph $\operatorname{SG}(n,k)$ of $\operatorname{KG}(n,k)$ with the same chromatic number. In this paper, we compute the diameter of the graph $\operatorname{SG}(2k+r,k)$ with $r \geq 1$. We obtain an exact value of the diameter of $\operatorname{SG}(2k+r,k)$ when $r \in \{1,2\}$ or when $r \geq k-3$. For the remained cases, when $3 \leq r \leq k-4$, we obtain that the diameter of $\operatorname{SG}(2k+r,k)$ belongs to the integer interval $[4..k-r-1]$.
Locating-dominating sets: from graphs to oriented graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A locating-dominating set in an undirected graph is a subset of vertices $S$ such that $S$ is dominating and for every $u,v \notin S$, we have $N(u)\cap S\ne N(v)\cap S$. In this paper, we consider the oriented version of the problem. A locating-dominating set in an oriented graph is a set $S$ such that for every $w\in V$, $N[w]^-\cap S=\emptyset$ and for each pair of vertices $u,v\in V\setminus S$, $N^-(u)\cap S\ne N^-(v)\cap S$. We consider the following two parameters. Given an undirected graph $G$, we look for $\overset{\rightarrow}γ_{LD}(G)$ ($\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G))$ which is the size of the smallest (largest) optimal locating-dominating set over all orientations of $G$. In particular, if $D$ is an orientation of $G$, then $\overset{\rightarrow}γ_{LD}(G)\leqγ_{LD}(D)\leq\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G)$. For the best orientation, we prove that, for every twin-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, $\overset{\rightarrow}γ_{LD}(G)\le n/2$ proving a ``directed version'' of a conjecture on $γ_{LD}(G)$. Moreover, we give some bounds for $\overset{\rightarrow}γ_{LD}(G)$ on many graph classes and drastically improve the value $n/2$ for (almost) $d$-regular graphs by showing that $\overset{\rightarrow}γ_{LD}(G)\in O(\log d/d\cdot n)$ using a probabilistic argument. While $\overset{\rightarrow}γ_{LD}(G)\leqγ_{LD}(G)$ holds for every graph $G$, we give some graph classes graphs for which $\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G)\geqγ_{LD}(G)$ and some for which $\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G)\leq γ_{LD}(G)$. We also give general bounds for $\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G)$. Finally, we show that for many graph classes $\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G)$ is polynomial on $n$ but we leave open the question whether there exist graphs with $\overset{\rightarrow}Γ_{LD}(G)\in O(\log n)$.

Shattering $k$-sets with Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Many concepts from extremal set theory have analogues for families of permutations. This paper is concerned with the notion of shattering for permutations. A family $\mathcal{P}$ of permutations of an $n$-element set $X$ shatters a $k$-set from $X$ if it appears in each of the $k!$ possible orders in some permutation in $\mathcal{P}$. The smallest family $\mathcal{P}$ which shatters every $k$-subset of $X$ is known to have size $Θ(\log n)$. Our aim is to introduce and study two natural partial versions of this shattering problem. Our first main result concerns the case where our family must contain only $t$ out of $k!$ of the possible orders. When $k=3$ we show that there are three distinct regimes depending on $t$: constant, $Θ(\log\log n)$, $Θ(\log n)$. We also show that for larger $k$ these same regimes exist although they may not cover all values of $t$. Our second direction concerns the problem of determining the largest number of $k$-sets that can be totally shattered by a family with given size. We show that for any $n$, a family of $6$ permutations is enough to shatter a proportion between $\frac{17}{42}$ and $\frac{11}{14}$ of all triples.
