Novel Bounded Binary-Addition Tree Algorithm for Binary-State Network Reliability Problems
Many network applications are based on binary-state networks, where each component has one of two states: success or failure. Efficient algorithms to evaluate binary-state network reliability are continually being developed. Reliability estimates the probability of the success state and is an effective and popular evaluation technique for binary-state networks. Binary-addition tree (BAT) algorithms are frequently used to calculate the efficiency and reliability of binary-state networks. In this study, we propose a novel, bounded BAT algorithm that employs three novel concepts: the first connected vector, the last disconnected vector, and super vectors. These vectors and the calculations of their occurrent probabilities narrow the search space and simplify the probability calculations to reduce the run time of the algorithm. Moreover, we show that replacing each undirected arc with two directed arcs, which is required in traditional direct methods, is unnecessary in the proposed algorithm. We call this novel concept the undirected vectors. The performance of the proposed bounded BAT algorithm was verified experimentally by solving a benchmark set of problems.

Let $G$ be a graph embedded on an orientable surface. Given a class ${\cal C}$ of facial circuits of $G$ as a forbidden class, we give a sufficient-necessary condition for that an $α$-orientation (orientation with prescribed out-degrees) of $G$ can be transformed into another by a sequence of flips on non-forbidden circuits and further give an explicit formula for the minimum number of such flips. We also consider the connection among all $α$-orientations by defining a directed graph ${\bf D}({\cal C})$, namely the ${\cal C}$-forbidden flip graph. We show that if ${\cal C}\not=\emptyset$, then ${\bf D}({\cal C})$ has exactly $|O(G,{\cal C})|$ components, each of which is the cover graph of a distributive lattice, where $|O(G,{\cal C})|$ is the number of the $α$-orientations that has no counterclockwise facial circuit other than that in ${\cal C}$. If ${\cal C}=\emptyset$, then every component of ${\bf D}({\cal C})$ is strongly connected. This generalizes the corresponding results of Felsner and Propp for the case that ${\cal C}$ consists of a single facial circuit.

We study continuous-time quantum walks on normal Cayley graphs of certain non-abelian groups, called extraspecial groups. By applying general results for graphs in association schemes we determine the precise conditions for perfect state transfer and fractional revival, and use partial spreads to construct graphs on extraspecial $2$-groups admitting these various phenomena. Lastly, we use a result of Ada Chan to show that there is no normal Cayley graph of an extraspecial group that admits instantaneous uniform mixing.

We prove a conjecture by Garbe et al. [arXiv:2010.07854] by showing that a Latin square is quasirandom if and only if the density of every 2x3 pattern is 1/720+o(1). This result is the best possible in the sense that 2x3 cannot be replaced with 2x2 or 1xN for any N.

We study the problem of finding pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles in the randomly perturbed graph model, which is the union of any $n$-vertex graph $G$ satisfying a given minimum degree condition and the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. We prove that asymptotically almost surely $G \cup G(n,p)$ contains at least $\min\{δ(G), \lfloor n/3 \rfloor\}$ pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles, provided $p \ge C \log n/n$, where $C$ is a large enough constant. This is a perturbed version of an old result of Dirac.
Our result is asymptotically optimal and answers a question of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021, no. 3, 480--516] in a strong form. We also prove a stability version of our result, which in the case of pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles extends a result of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021, no. 3, 480--516]. Together with a result of Balogh, Treglown, and Wagner [CPC, 2019, no. 2, 159--176] this fully resolves the existence of triangle factors in randomly perturbed graphs.
We believe that the methods introduced in this paper are useful for a variety of related problems: we discuss possible generalisations to clique factors, cycle factors, and $2$-universality.

Associative spectra of graph algebras are examined with the help of homomorphisms of DFS trees. Undirected graphs are classified according to the associative spectra of their graph algebras; there are only three distinct possibilities: constant 1, powers of 2, and Catalan numbers. Associative and antiassociative digraphs are described, and associative spectra are determined for certain families of digraphs, such as paths, cycles, and graphs on two vertices.

Let $f:G\rightarrow H$ be a homomorphism of groups, we construct a topological space $X_f$ such that its group of homeomorphisms is isomorphic to $G$, its group of homotopy classes of self-homotopy equivalences is isomorphic to $H$ and the natural map between the group of homeomorphisms of $X_f$ and the group of homotopy classes of self-homotopy equivalences of $X_f$ is precisely $f$. In addition, realization problems involving homology, homotopy groups and groups of automorphisms are considered.

One method to obtain a proper vertex coloring of graphs using a reasonable number of colors is to start from any arbitrary proper coloring and then repeat some local re-coloring techniques to reduce the number of color classes. The Grundy (First-Fit) coloring and color-dominating colorings of graphs are two well-known such techniques. The color-dominating colorings are also known and commonly referred as {\rm b}-colorings. But these two topics have been studied separately in graph theory. We introduce a new coloring procedure which combines the strategies of these two techniques and satisfies an additional property. We first prove that the vertices of every graph $G$ can be effectively colored using color classes say $C_1, \ldots, C_k$ such that $(i)$ for any two colors $i$ and $j$ with $1\leq i< j \leq k$, any vertex of color $j$ is adjacent to a vertex of color $i$, $(ii)$ there exists a set $\{u_1, \ldots, u_k\}$ of vertices of $G$ such that $u_j\in C_j$ for any $j\in \{1, \ldots, k\}$ and $u_k$ is adjacent to $u_j$ for each $1\leq j \leq k$ with $j\not= k$, and $(iii)$ for each $i$ and $j$ with $i\not= j$, the vertex $u_j$ has a neighbor in $C_i$. This provides a new vertex coloring heuristic which improves both Grundy and color-dominating colorings. Denote by $z(G)$ the maximum number of colors used in any proper vertex coloring satisfying the above properties. The $z(G)$ quantifies the worst-case behavior of the heuristic. We prove the existence of $\{G_n\}_{n\geq 1}$ such that $\min \{Γ(G_n), b(G_n)\} \rightarrow \infty$ but $z(G_n)\leq 3$ for each $n$. For each positive integer $t$ we construct a family of finitely many colored graphs ${\mathcal{D}}_t$ satisfying the property that if $z(G)\geq t$ for a graph $G$ then $G$ contains an element from ${\mathcal{D}}_t$ as a colored subgraph. This provides an algorithmic method for proving numeric upper bounds for $z(G)$.
Symmetric Dyck tilings, ballot tableaux and tree-like tableaux of shifted shapes
Symmetric Dyck tilings and ballot tilings are certain tilings in the region surrounded by two ballot paths. We study the relations of combinatorial objects which are bijective to symmetric Dyck tilings such as labeled trees, Hermite histories, and perfect matchings. We also introduce two operations on labeled trees for symmetric Dyck tilings: symmetric Dyck tiling strip (symDTS) and symmetric Dyck tiling ribbon (symDTR). We give two definitions of Hermite histories for symmetric Dyck tilings, and show that they are equivalent by use of the correspondence between symDTS operation and an Hermite history. Since ballot tilings form a subset in the set of symmetric Dyck tilings, we construct an inclusive map from labeled trees for ballot tilings to labeled trees for symmetric Dyck tilings. By this inclusive map, the results for symmetric Dyck tilings can be applied to those of ballot tilings. We introduce and study the notions of ballot tableaux and tree-like tableaux of shifted shapes, which are generalizations of Dyck tableaux and tree-like tableaux, respectively. The correspondence between ballot tableaux and tree-like tableaux of shifted shapes is given by using the symDTR operation and the structure of labeled trees for symmetric Dyck tilings.
The sets of flattened partitions with forbidden patterns
The study of pattern avoidance in permutations, and specifically in flattened partitions is an active area of current research. In this paper, we count the number of distinct flattened partitions over [n] avoiding a single pattern, as well as a pair of two patterns. Several counting sequences, namely Catalan numbers, powers of two, Fibonacci numbers and Motzkin numbers arise. We also consider other combinatorial statistics, namely runs and inversions, and establish some bijections in situations where the statistics coincide.

An $n$-dimensional closed flat manifold is said to be of diagonal type if the standard representation of its holonomy group $G$ is diagonal. An $n$-dimensional Bieberbach group of diagonal type is the fundamental group of such a manifold. We introduce the diagonal Vasquez invariant of $G$ as the least integer $n_d(G)$ such that every flat manifold of diagonal type with holonomy $G$ fibers over a flat manifold of dimension at most $n_d(G)$ with flat torus fibers. Using a combinatorial description of Bieberbach groups of diagonal type, we give both upper and lower bounds for this invariant. We show that the lower bounds are exact when $G$ has low rank. We apply this to analyse diffuseness properties of Bieberbach groups of diagonal type. This leads to a complete classification of Bieberbach groups of diagonal type with Klein four-group holonomy and to an application to Kaplansky's Unit Conjecture.

F. Wehrung has asked: Given a family $\mathcal{C}$ of subsets of a set $Ω$, under what conditions will there exist a total ordering on $Ω$ under which every member of $\mathcal{C}$ is convex? <p> Note that if $A$ and $B$ are nondisjoint convex subsets of a totally ordered set, neither of which contains the other, then $A\cup B$, $A\cap B$, and $A\setminus B$ are also convex. So let $\mathcal{C}$ be an arbitrary set of subsets of a set $Ω$, and form its closure $\mathcal{P}$ under forming, whenever $A$ and $B$ are nondisjoint and neither contains the other, the sets $A\cup B$, $A\cap B$, and $A\setminus B$. We determine the form $\mathcal{P}$ can take when $\mathcal{C}$, and hence $\mathcal{P}$, is finite, and for this case get necessary and sufficient conditions for there to exist an ordering of $Ω$ of the desired sort. From this we obtain a condition which works without the finiteness hypothesis. <p> We establish bounds on the cardinality of the subset $\mathcal{P}$ generated as above by an $n$-element set $\mathcal{C}$. <p> We note connections with the theory of <i>interval graphs</i> and <i>hypergraphs</i>, which lead to other ways of answering Wehrung's question.

Birkhoff's representation theorem (Birkhoff, 1937) defines a bijection between elements of a distributive lattice and the family of upper sets of an associated poset. Although not used explicitly, this result is at the backbone of the combinatorial algorithm by Irving et al. (1987) for maximizing a linear function over the set of stable matchings in Gale and Shapley's stable marriage model (Gale and Shapley, 1962). In this paper, we introduce a property of distributive lattices, which we term as affine representability, and show its role in efficiently solving linear optimization problems over the elements of a distributive lattice, as well as describing the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of the lattice elements. We apply this concept to the stable matching model with path-independent quota-filling choice functions, thus giving efficient algorithms and a compact polyhedral description for this model. To the best of our knowledge, this model generalizes all models from the literature for which similar results were known, and our paper is the first that proposes efficient algorithms for stable matchings with choice functions, beyond classical extensions of the Deferred Acceptance algorithm.

The graph Cheeger constant and Cheeger inequalities are generalized to the case of hypergraphs whose edges have the same cardinality. In particular, it is shown that the second largest eigenvalue of the generalized normalized Laplacian is bounded both above and below by the generalized Cheeger constant, and the corresponding eigenfunctions can be used to approximate the Cheeger cut.
Bounds for the multilevel construction
One of the main problems in random network coding is to compute good lower and upper bounds on the achievable cardinality of the so-called subspace codes in the projective space $\mathcal{P}_q(n)$ for a given minimum distance. The determination of the exact maximum cardinality is a very tough discrete optimization problem involving a huge number of symmetries. Besides some explicit constructions for \textit{good} subspace codes several of the most success full constructions involve the solution of discrete optimization subproblems itself, which mostly have not been not been solved systematically. Here we consider the multilevel a.k.a.\ Echelon--Ferrers construction and given lower and upper bounds for the achievable cardinalities. From a more general point of view, we solve maximum clique problems in weighted graphs, where the weights can be polynomials in the field size $q$.
On symmetric and Hermitian rank distance codes

Let $\cal M$ denote the set ${\cal S}_{n, q}$ of $n \times n$ symmetric matrices with entries in ${\rm GF}(q)$ or the set ${\cal H}_{n, q^2}$ of $n \times n$ Hermitian matrices whose elements are in ${\rm GF}(q^2)$. Then $\cal M$ equipped with the rank distance $d_r$ is a metric space. We investigate $d$-codes in $({\cal M}, d_r)$ and construct $d$-codes whose sizes are larger than the corresponding additive bounds. In the Hermitian case, we show the existence of an $n$-code of $\cal M$, $n$ even and $n/2$ odd, of size $\left(3q^{n}-q^{n/2}\right)/2$, and of a $2$-code of size $q^6+ q(q-1)(q^4+q^2+1)/2$, for $n = 3$. In the symmetric case, if $n$ is odd or if $n$ and $q$ are both even, we provide better upper bound on the size of a $2$-code. In the case when $n = 3$ and $q>2$, a $2$-code of size $q^4+q^3+1$ is exhibited. This provides the first infinite family of $2$-codes of symmetric matrices whose size is larger than the largest possible additive $2$-code.
Refined universality for critical KCM: lower bounds

We study a general class of interacting particle systems called kinetically constrained models (KCM) in two dimensions tightly linked to the monotone cellular automata called bootstrap percolation. There are three classes of such models, the most studied being the critical one. In a recent series of works it was shown that the KCM counterparts of critical bootstrap percolation models with the same properties split into two classes with different behaviour.
Together with the companion paper by the first author, our work determines the logarithm of the infection time up to a constant factor for all critical KCM, which were previously known only up to logarithmic corrections. This improves all previous results except for the Duarte-KCM, for which we give a new proof of the best result known. We establish that on this level of precision critical KCM have to be classified into seven categories instead of the two in bootstrap percolation. In the present work we establish lower bounds for critical KCM in a unified way, also recovering the universality result of Toninelli and the authors and the Duarte model result of Martinelli, Toninelli and the second author.
