Any smooth tropical plane curve contains a distinguished trivalent graph called its skeleton. In 2020 Morrison and Tewari proved that the so-called big face graphs cannot be the skeleta of tropical curves for genus $12$ and greater. In this paper we answer an open question they posed to extend their result to the prism graphs, proving that they are the skeleton of a smooth tropical plane curve precisely when the genus is at most $11$. Our main tool is a classification of lattice polygons with two points than can simultaneously view all others, without having any one point that can observe all others.
Prisoners, Rooms, and Lightswitches

We examine a new variant of the classic prisoners and lightswitches puzzle: A warden leads his $n$ prisoners in and out of $r$ rooms, one at a time, in some order, with each prisoner eventually visiting every room an arbitrarily large number of times. The rooms are indistinguishable, except that each one has $s$ lightswitches; the prisoners win their freedom if at some point a prisoner can correctly declare that each prisoner has been in every room at least once. What is the minimum number of switches per room, $s$, such that the prisoners can manage this? We show that if the prisoners do not know the switches' starting configuration, then they have no chance of escape -- but if the prisoners do know the starting configuration, then the minimum sufficient $s$ is surprisingly small. The analysis gives rise to a number of puzzling open questions, as well.
On the Boomerang Uniformity of Permutations of Low Carlitz Rank

Finding permutation polynomials with low differential and boomerang uniformityis an important topic in S-box designs of many block ciphers. For example, AES chooses the inverse function as its S-box, which is differentially 4-uniform and boomerang 6-uniform. Also there has been considerable research on many non-quadratic permutations which are obtained by modifying certain set of points from the inverse function. In this paper, we give a novel approach that shows that plenty of existing modifications of the inverse function are in fact affine equivalent to permutations of low Carlitz rank and those modifications cannot be APN (almost perfect nonlinear) unless the Carlitz rank is very large. Using nice properties of the permutations of Carlitz form, we present the complete list of permutations of Carlitz rank 3 having the boomerang uniformity six, and also give the complete classification of the differential uniformity of permutations of Carlitz rank 3. We also provide, up to affine equivalence, all the involutory permutations of Carlitz rank 3 having the boomerang uniformity six.

We prove that, for any positive integer $m$, a segment may be partitioned into $m$ possibly degenerate or empty segments with equal values of a continuous function $f$ of a segment, assuming that $f$ may take positive and negative values, but its value on degenerate or empty segments is zero.

A signed graph is a graph in which each edge has a positive or negative sign. In this article, first we characterize the distance compatibility in the case of a connected signed graph and discussed the distance compatibility criterion for the cartesian product, lexicographic product and tensor product of signed graphs. We also deal with the distance matrix of the cartesian product, lexicographic product and tensor product of signed graphs in terms of the distance matrix of the factor graphs.
On the Characteristic Polynomial of Skew Gain Graphs
Gain graphs are graphs where the edges are given some orientation and labeled with the elements (called gains) from a group so that gains are inverted when we reverse the direction of the edges. Generalizing the notion of gain graphs, skew gain graphs have the property that the gain of a reversed edge is the image of edge gain under an anti-involution. In this paper, we deal with the adjacency matrix of skew gain graphs with involutive automorphism on a field of characteristic zero and their charactersitic polynomials. Spectra of some particular skew gain graphs are also discussed. Meanwhile it is interesting to note that weighted graphs are particular cases of skew gain graphs.
On the Directed Oberwolfach Problem with variable cycle lengths
The Directed Oberwolfach Problem can be considered as the directed version of the well-known Oberwolfach Problem, first mentioned by Ringel at a conference in Oberwolfach, Germany in 1967. In this paper, we describe some new partial results on the Directed Oberwolfach Problem with variable cycle lengths. In particular, we show that the complete symmetric digraph $K_n^{*}$ admits a $( \vec{C}_2, ..., \vec{C}_2, \vec{C}_3) $-factorization for all $ n\equiv 1, 3,$ or $ 7\pmod{8}$. We also show that $K_n^{*}$ admits a $(\vec{C}_2, \vec{C}_{n-2})$-factorization for any integer $n \geq 5$.
A polynomial size model with implicit SWAP gate counting for exact qubit reordering

Due to the physics behind quantum computing, quantum circuit designers must adhere to the constraints posed by the limited interaction distance of qubits. Existing circuits need therefore to be modified via the insertion of SWAP gates, which alter the qubit order by interchanging the location of two qubits' quantum states. We consider the Nearest Neighbor Compliance problem on a linear array, where the number of required SWAP gates is to be minimized. We introduce an Integer Linear Programming model of the problem of which the size scales polynomially in the number of qubits and gates. Furthermore, we solve $131$ benchmark instances to optimality using the commercial solver CPLEX. The benchmark instances are substantially larger in comparison to those evaluated with exact methods before. The largest circuits contain up to $18$ qubits or over $100$ quantum gates. This formulation also seems to be suitable for developing heuristic methods since (near) optimal solutions are discovered quickly in the search process.

The Olson constant $\mathcal{O}L(\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d})$ represents the minimum positive integer $t$ with the property that every subset $A\subset \mathbb{F}_{p}^{d}$ of cardinality $t$ contains a nonempty subset with vanishing sum. The problem of estimating $\mathcal{O}L(\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d})$ is one of the oldest questions in additive combinatorics, with a long and interesting history even for the case $d=1$.
In this paper, we prove that for any fixed $d \geq 2$ and $ε> 0$, the Olson constant of $\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d}$ satisfies the inequality $$\mathcal{O}L(\mathbb{F}_{p}^{d}) \leq (d-1+ε)p$$ for all sufficiently large primes $p$. This settles a conjecture of Hoi Nguyen and Van Vu.
Odd diagrams, Bruhat order, and pattern avoidance

The odd diagram of a permutation is a subset of the classical diagram with additional parity conditions. In this paper, we study classes of permutations with the same odd diagram, which we call odd diagram classes. First, we prove a conjecture relating odd diagram classes and 213- and 312-avoiding permutations. Secondly, we show that each odd diagram class is a Bruhat interval. Instrumental to our proofs is an explicit description of the Bruhat edges that link permutations in a class.
Directed branch-width: A directed analogue of tree-width
Gurski and Wanke showed that a graph class C has bounded tree-width if and only if its associated class of directed line graphs has bounded clique-width. Inevitably -- asking whether this relationship lifts to directed graphs -- we introduce a new digraph width measure: we obtain it by investigating digraphs whose directed line graphs have bounded cliquewidth. Thus, to generalize Gurski and Wanke's aforementioned result, we introduce a natural generalization of branch-width to digraphs and we name it accordingly.
Directed branch-width is a genuinely directed width-measure insofar as it cannot be used to bound the value of the underlying undirected tree-width. Despite this, the two measures are still closely related: the directed branch-width of a digraph D can differ from the branch-width of its underlying undirected graph only at sources and sinks. This relationship allows us to extend a range of algorithmic results from directed graphs with bounded underlying treewidth to the strictly larger class of digraphs having bounded directed branch-width.

If $G$ is a graph and $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$, we say that an edge-coloring of $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-polychromatic if every graph from $\mathcal{H}$ gets all colors present in $G$ on its edges. The $\mathcal{H}$-polychromatic number of $G$, denoted $\operatorname{poly}_\mathcal{H} (G)$, is the largest number of colors in an $\mathcal{H}$-polychromatic coloring. In this paper we determine $\operatorname{poly}_\mathcal{H} (G)$ exactly when $G$ is a complete graph on $n$ vertices, $q$ is a fixed nonnegative integer, and $\mathcal{H}$ is one of three families: the family of all matchings spanning $n-q$ vertices, the family of all $2$-regular graphs spanning at least $n-q$ vertices, and the family of all cycles of length precisely $n-q$. There are connections with an extension of results on Ramsey numbers for cycles in a graph.

We extend previous work on Hrushovski's stabilizer's theorem and prove a measure-theoretic version of a well-known result of Pillay-Scanlon-Wagner on products of three types. This generalizes results of Gowers on products of three sets and yields model-theoretic proofs of existing asymptotic results for quasirandom groups. We also obtain a model-theoretic proof of Roth's theorem on the existence of arithmetic progressions of length $3$ for subsets of positive density in suitable definably amenable groups, such as countable amenable abelian groups without involutions and ultraproducts of finite abelian groups of odd order.
On singular signed graphs with nullspace spanned by a full vector: Signed nut graphs
A signed graph has edge weights drawn from the set $\{+1,-1\}$, and is termed sign-balanced if it is equivalent to an unsigned graph under the operation of sign switching; otherwise it is called sign-unbalanced. A nut graph has a one dimensional kernel with a corresponding eigenvector that is full. In this paper we generalise the notion of nut graphs to signed graphs. Orders for which unsigned regular nut graphs exist were determined recently for the degrees up to $11$. By extending the definition to signed nut graphs, we find all pairs $(ρ, n)$ for which a $ρ$-regular nut graph (sign-balanced or sign-unbalanced) of order $n$ exists with $ρ\le 11$. We devise a construction for signed nut graphs based on a smaller `seed' graph, giving infinite series of both sign-balanced and sign-unbalanced $ρ$-regular nut graphs. All orders for which a complete sign-unbalanced nut graph exists are characterised; they have underlying graph $K_n$ with $n \equiv 1 \pmod 4$. All orders for which a regular sign-unbalanced nut graph with $ρ= n - 2$ exists are also characterised; they have an underlying cocktail-party graph $\mathrm{CP}(n)$ with even $n \geq 8$.
Natural Graph Wavelet Packet Dictionaries

We introduce a set of novel multiscale basis transforms for signals on graphs that utilize their "dual" domains by incorporating the "natural" distances between graph Laplacian eigenvectors, rather than simply using the eigenvalue ordering. These basis dictionaries can be seen as generalizations of the classical Shannon wavelet packet dictionary to arbitrary graphs, and do not rely on the frequency interpretation of Laplacian eigenvalues. We describe the algorithms (involving either vector rotations or orthogonalizations) to construct these basis dictionaries, use them to efficiently approximate graph signals through the best basis search, and demonstrate the strengths of these basis dictionaries for graph signals measured on sunflower graphs and street networks.

Let $H$ and $K$ be subsets of the vertex set $V(Q_d)$ of the $d$-cube $Q_d$ (we call $H$ and $K$ configurations in $Q_d$). We say $K$ is an \emph{exact copy} of $H$ if there is an automorphism of $Q_d$ which sends $H$ to $K$. If $d$ is a positive integer and $H$ is a configuration in $Q_d$, we define $π(H,d)$ to be the limit as $n$ goes to infinity of the maximum fraction, over all subsets $S$ of $V(Q_n)$, of sub-$d$-cubes of $Q_n$ whose intersection with $S$ is an exact copy of $H$. We determine $π(C_8,4)$ and $π(P_4,3)$ where $C_8$ is a "perfect" 8-cycle in $Q_4$ and $P_4$ is a "perfect" path with 4 vertices in $Q_3$, and make conjectures about $π(C_{2d},d)$ and $π(P_{d+1},d)$ for larger values of $d$. In our proofs there are connections with counting the number of sequences with certain properties and with the inducibility of certain small graphs. In particular, we needed to determine the inducibility of two vertex disjoint edges in the family of bipartite graphs.
Enumerating Restricted Dyck Paths with Context-Free Grammars
The number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ is famously $C_n$, the $n$th Catalan number. This fact follows after noticing that every Dyck path can be uniquely parsed according to a context-free grammar. In a recent paper, Zeilberger showed that many restricted sets of Dyck paths satisfy different, more complicated grammars, and from this derived various generating function identities. We take this further, highlighting some combinatorial results about Dyck paths obtained via grammatical proof and generalizing some of Zeilberger's grammars to infinite families.

We provide a gentle introduction, aimed at non-experts, to Borel combinatorics that studies definable graphs on topological spaces. This is an emerging field on the borderline between combinatorics and descriptive set theory with deep connections to many other areas.
After giving some background material, we present in careful detail some basic tools and results on the existence of Borel satisfying assignments: Borel versions of greedy algorithms and augmenting procedures, local rules, Borel transversals, etc. Also, we present the construction of Andrew Marks of acyclic Borel graphs for which the greedy bound $Δ+1$ on the Borel chromatic number is best possible.
In the remainder of the paper we briefly discuss various topics such as relations to LOCAL algorithms, measurable versions of Hall's marriage theorem and of Lovász Local Lemma, applications to equidecomposability, etc.
A survey on star edge-coloring of graphs
The star chromatic index of a multigraph $G$, denoted $χ'_{st}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed to properly color the edges of $G$ such that no path or cycle of length four is bicolored. We survey the results of determining the star chromatic index, present the interesting proofs and techniques, and collect many open problems and conjectures.
