Some results on the Ryser design conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Ryser design $\mathcal{D}$ on $v$ points is a collection of $v$ proper subsets (called blocks) of a point-set with $v$ points such that every two blocks intersect each other in $λ$ points (and $λ< v$ is a fixed number) and there are at least two block sizes. A design $\mathcal{D}$ is called a symmetric design, if every point of $\mathcal{D}$ has the same replication number (or equivalently, all the blocks have the same size) and every two blocks intersect each other in $λ$ points. The only known construction of a Ryser design is via block complementation of a symmetric design. Such a Ryser design is called a Ryser design of Type-1. This is the ground for the Ryser-Woodall conjecture: "every Ryser design is of Type-1". This long standing conjecture has been shown to be valid in many situations. Let $\mathcal{D}$ denote a Ryser design of order $v$, index $λ$ and replication numbers $r_1,r_2$. Let $e_i$ denote the number of points of $\mathcal{D}$ with replication number $r_i$ (with $i = 1, 2$). Call $A$ small (respectively large) if $|A| < 2λ$ (respectively $|A| > 2λ$) and average if $|A|=2λ$. Let $D$ denote the integer $e_1 - r_2$ and let $ρ> 1$ denote the rational number $\dfrac{r_1-1}{r_2-1}$. Main results of the present article are the following. For every block $A$, $r_1 \geq |A| \geq r_2$ (this improves an earlier known inequality $|A| \geq r_2$). If there is no small block (respectively no large block) in $\mathcal{D}$, then $D\leq -1$ (respectively $D\geq 0$). With an extra assumption $e_2 > e_1$ an earlier known upper bound on $v$ is improved from a cubic to a quadratic in $λ$. It is also proved that if $v \leq λ^2+ λ+ 1$ and if $ρ$ equals $λ$ or $λ- 1$, then $\mathcal{D}$ is of Type-1. Finally a Ryser design with $ 2^n + 1$ points is shown to be of Type-1.

On complex supersolvable line arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the number of lines in an $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangement is upper bounded by $3m-3$ and we classify the $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangements with two modular points up-to lattice-isotopy. A lower bound for the number of double points $n_2$ in an $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangement of $d$ lines is also considered. When $3 \leq m \leq 5$, or when $m \geq \frac{d}{2}$, or when there are at least two modular points, we show that $n_2 \geq \frac{d}{2}$, as conjectured by B. Anzis and S. O. Toh\u aneanu. This conjecture is shown to hold also for supersolvable line arrangements obtained as cones over generic line arrangements, or cones over arbitrary line arrangements having a generic vertex.

Configuration sets with nonempty interior
Published in Jour. Geometric Analysis 31 (2021), no. 7, 6662-6680 • View Publication • BIB
A theorem of Steinhaus states that if $E\subset \mathbb R^d$ has positive Lebesgue measure, then the difference set $E-E$ contains a neighborhood of $0$. Similarly, if $E$ merely has Hausdorff dimension $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)>(d+1)/2$, a result of Mattila and Sjölin states that the distance set $Δ(E)\subset\mathbb R$ contains an open interval. In this work, we study such results from a general viewpoint, replacing $E-E$ or $Δ(E)$ with more general $Φ\,$-configurations for a class of $Φ:\mathbb R^d\times\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb R^k$, and showing that, under suitable lower bounds on $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)$ and a regularity assumption on the family of generalized Radon transforms associated with $Φ$, it follows that the set $Δ_Φ(E)$ of $Φ$-configurations in $E$ has nonempty interior in $\mathbb R^k$. Further extensions hold for $Φ\,$-configurations generated by two sets, $E$ and $F$, in spaces of possibly different dimensions and with suitable lower bounds on $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)$.

Palindromic length complexity and a generalization of Thue-Morse sequences
The notion of palindromic length of a finite word, as well as an infinite word, was first introduced by Frid, Puzynina and Zamboni\cite{FRID2013737}. They conjectured that if the palindromic length of an infinite word is bounded, then this sequence is eventually periodic. In this article, we give a formal expression of the palindromic length of Thue-Morse sequence and find all sequences which have the same palindromic length as Thue-Morse's.

Seymour's second-neighborhood conjecture from a different perspective
Published • View Publication • BIB
Seymour's Second-Neighborhood Conjecture states that every directed graph whose underlying graph is simple has at least one vertex $v$ such that the number of vertices of out-distance $2$ from $v$ is at least as large as the number of vertices of out-distance $1$ from it. We present alternative statements of the conjecture in the language of linear algebra.

Algebraic $h$-vectors of simplicial complexes through local cohomology, part 1
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an infinite field $\mathbb{k}$ and a simplicial complex $Δ$, a common theme in studying the $f$- and $h$-vectors of $Δ$ has been the consideration of the Hilbert series of the Stanley--Reisner ring $\mathbb{k}[Δ]$ modulo a generic linear system of parameters $Θ$. Historically, these computations have been restricted to special classes of complexes (most typically triangulations of spheres or manifolds). We provide a compact topological expression of $h_{d-1}^\mathfrak{a}(Δ)$, the dimension over $\mathbb{k}$ in degree $d-1$ of $\mathbb{k}[Δ]/(Θ)$, for any complex $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$. In the process, we provide tools and techniques for the possible extension to other coefficients in the Hilbert series.

On fractional fragility rates of graph classes
We consider, for every positive integer $a$, probability distributions on subsets of vertices of a graph with the property that every vertex belongs to the random set sampled from this distribution with probability at most $1/a$. Among other results, we prove that for every positive integer~$a$ and every planar graph $G$, there exists such a probability distribution with the additional property that deleting the random set creates a graph with component-size at most $(Δ(G)-1)^{a+O(\sqrt{a})}$, or a graph with treedepth at most $O(a^3\log_2(a))$. We also provide nearly-matching lower bounds.

We solve a special type of linear systems with coefficients in multivariate polynomial rings. These systems arise in the computation of parametric Bernstein-Sato polynomials associated with certain hypergeometric ideals in the Weyl algebra.

Compatible Cycles and CHY Integrals
Published • View Publication • BIB
The CHY construction naturally associates a vector in $\mathbb{R}^{(n-3)!}$ to every 2-regular graph with $n$ vertices. Partial amplitudes in the biadjoint scalar theory are given by the inner product of vectors associated with a pair of cycles. In this work we study the problem of extending the computation to pairs of arbitrary 2-regular graphs. This requires the construction of compatible cycles, i.e. cycles such that their union with a 2-regular graph admits a Hamiltonian decomposition. We prove that there are at least $(n-2)!/4$ such cycles for any 2-regular graph. We also find a connection to breakpoint graphs when the graph only has double edges. We end with a comparison of the lower bound on the number of randomly selected cycles needed to generate a basis of $\mathbb{R}^{(n-3)!}$, using the super Catalan numbers, and our lower bound for compatible cycles.

Minimum coprime graph labelings
A coprime labeling of a graph $G$ is a labeling of the vertices of $G$ with distinct integers from $1$ to $k$ such that adjacent vertices have coprime labels. The minimum coprime number of $G$ is the least $k$ for which such a labeling exists. In this paper, we determine the minimum coprime number for several well-studied classes of graphs, including the coronas of complete graphs with empty graphs and the joins of two paths. In particular, we resolve a conjecture of Seoud, El Sonbaty, and Mahran and two conjectures of Asplund and Fox. We also provide an asymptotic for the minimum coprime number of the Erdős-Rényi random graph.

The Flexibility and Rigidity of Leaper Frameworks
A leaper framework is a bar-and-joint framework whose joints are integer points forming a rectangular grid and whose bars correspond to all moves of a given leaper within that grid. We study the flexibility and rigidity of leaper frameworks. Let $p$ and $q$ be positive integers such that the $(p, q)$-leaper $L$ is free. József Solymosi and Ethan White conjectured in 2018 that the leaper framework of $L$ on the square grid of side $2(p + q) - 1$, and so on all larger grids, is rigid. We prove this conjecture. We also prove that Solymosi and White's conjecture is, in a sense, sharp. Namely, the leaper framework of $L$ on the rectangular grid of sides $2(p + q) - 2$ and $2(p + q) - 1$, and so on all smaller grids (except for, trivially, the $1 \times 1$ grid), is flexible. In particular, we completely resolve the flexibility and rigidity question for leaper frameworks on square grids. We establish a number of related results as well.
Thresholds in random motif graphs
We introduce a natural generalization of the Erdős-Rényi random graph model in which random instances of a fixed motif are added independently. The binomial random motif graph $G(H,n,p)$ is the random (multi)graph obtained by adding an instance of a fixed graph $H$ on each of the copies of $H$ in the complete graph on $n$ vertices, independently with probability $p$. We establish that every monotone property has a threshold in this model, and determine the thresholds for connectivity, Hamiltonicity, the existence of a perfect matching, and subgraph appearance. Moreover, in the first three cases we give the analogous hitting time results; with high probability, the first graph in the random motif graph process that has minimum degree one (or two) is connected and contains a perfect matching (or Hamiltonian respectively).

Structure of Trees with Respect to Nodal Vertex Sets
Let $T$ be a tree with a given adjacency eigenvalue $λ$. In this paper, by using the $λ$-minimal trees, we determine the structure of trees with a given multiplicity of the eigenvalue $λ$. Furthermore, we consider the relationship between the structure of trees and the eigensystem of a given Laplacian eigenvalue.
Generating functions for vector partition functions and a basic recurrence relation
Published in Journal of Difference Equations and Applications, 25:7, 1052-1061 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We define a generalized vector partition function and derive an identity for generating series of such functions associated with solutions of basic recurrence relation of combinatorial analysis. As a consequence, we obtain the generating function of the number of generalized lattice paths and a new version of Chaundy-Bullard identity for the vector partition function.
Avoidable Vertices and Edges in Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A vertex in a graph is simplicial if its neighborhood forms a clique. We consider three generalizations of the concept of simplicial vertices: avoidable vertices (also known as \textit{OCF}-vertices), simplicial paths, and their common generalization avoidable paths, introduced here. We present a general conjecture on the existence of avoidable paths. If true, the conjecture would imply a result due to Ohtsuki, Cheung, and Fujisawa from 1976 on the existence of avoidable vertices, and a result due to Chvátal, Sritharan, and Rusu from 2002 the existence of simplicial paths. In turn, both of these results generalize Dirac's classical result on the existence of simplicial vertices in chordal graphs. We prove that every graph with an edge has an avoidable edge, which settles the first open case of the conjecture. We point out a close relationship between avoidable vertices in a graph and its minimal triangulations, and identify new algorithmic uses of avoidable vertices, leading to new polynomially solvable cases of the maximum weight clique problem in classes of graphs simultaneously generalizing chordal graphs and circular-arc graphs. Finally, we observe that the proved cases of the conjecture have interesting consequences for highly symmetric graphs: in a vertex-transitive graph every induced two-edge path closes to an induced cycle, while in an edge-transitive graph every three-edge path closes to a cycle and every induced three-edge path closes to an induced cycle.
Bounding the number of cycles in a graph in terms of its degree sequence
We give an upper bound on the number of cycles in a simple graph in terms of its degree sequence, and apply this bound to resolve several conjectures of Király and Arman and Tsaturian and to improve upper bounds on the maximum number of cycles in a planar graph.

Drawing outerplanar graphs using thirteen edge lengths
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that every outerplanar graph $G$ can be linearly embedded in the plane such that the number of distinct distances between pairs of adjacent vertices is at most thirteen and there is no intersection between the image of a vertex and that of an edge not containing it. This extends the work of Alon and the second author, where only overlap between vertices was disallowed, thus settling a problem posed by Carmi, Dujmović, Morin and Wood.

Uniform Orderings for Generalized Coloring Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized coloring numbers col_r(G) (also denoted by scol_r(G)) and wcol_r(G) of a graph G were introduced by Kierstead and Yang as a generalization of the usual coloring number, and have found important theoretical and algorithmic applications. For each distance r, these numbers are determined by an "optimal" ordering of the vertices of G. We study the question of whether it is possible to find a single "uniform" ordering that is "good" for all distances r. We show that the answer to this question is essentially "yes". Our results give new characterizations of graph classes with bounded expansion and nowhere dense graph classes.
