On the existence of paradoxical motions of generically rigid graphs on the sphere
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 35(1), 325-361 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We interpret realizations of a graph on the sphere up to rotations as elements of a moduli space of curves of genus zero. We focus on those graphs that admit an assignment of edge lengths on the sphere resulting in a flexible object. Our interpretation of realizations allows us to provide a combinatorial characterization of these graphs in terms of the existence of particular colorings of the edges. Moreover, we determine necessary relations for flexibility between the spherical lengths of the edges. We conclude by classifying all possible motions on the sphere of the complete bipartite graph with $3+3$ vertices where no two vertices coincide or are antipodal.

Distinguishing Number of Non-Zero Component Graphs
A non-zero component graph $G(\mathbb{V})$ associated to a finite vector space $\mathbb{V}$ is a graph whose vertices are non-zero vectors of $\mathbb{V}$ and two vertices are adjacent, if their corresponding vectors have at least one non-zero component common in their linear combination of basis vectors. In this paper, we extend the study of properties of automorphisms of non-zero component graphs. We prove that every permutation of basis vectors can be extended to an automorphism of $G(\mathbb{V})$. We prove that the symmetric group of basis vectors of $\mathbb{V}$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group of $G(\mathbb{V})$. We find the distinguishing number of the graph for both of the cases, when the number of field elements of vector space $\mathbb{V}$ are 2 or more than 2.
On Cycle Transversals and Their Connected Variants in the Absence of a Small Linear Forest
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $H$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We prove new complexity results for the two classical cycle transversal problems Feedback Vertex Set and Odd Cycle Transversal by showing that they can be solved in polynomial time on $(sP_1+P_3)$-free graphs for every integer $s\geq 1$. We show the same result for the variants Connected Feedback Vertex Set and Connected Odd Cycle Transversal. We also prove that the latter two problems are polynomial-time solvable on cographs; this was already known for Feedback Vertex Set and Odd Cycle Transversal. We complement these results by proving that Odd Cycle Transversal and Connected Odd Cycle Transversal are NP-complete on $(P_2+P_5,P_6)$-free graphs.

Fractal classes of matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
A minor-closed class of matroids is (strongly) fractal if the number of n-element matroids in the class is dominated by the number of n-element excluded minors. We conjecture that when K is an infinite field, the class of K-representable matroids is strongly fractal. We prove that the class of sparse paving matroids with at most k circuit-hyperplanes is a strongly fractal class when k is at least three. The minor-closure of the class of spikes with at most k circuit-hyperplanes (with k>4) satisfies a strictly weaker condition: the number of 2t-element matroids in the class is dominated by the number of 2t-element excluded minors. However, there are only finitely many excluded minors with ground sets of odd size.

Lower Estimates on Eigenvalues of Quantum Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A method for estimating the spectral gap along with higher eigenvalues of nonequilateral quantum graphs has been introduced by Amini and Cohen-Steiner recently: it is based on a new transference principle between discrete and continuous models of a graph. We elaborate on it by developing a more general transference principle and by proposing alternative ways of applying it. To illustrate our findings, we present several spectral estimates on planar metric graphs that are oftentimes sharper than those obtained by isoperimetric inequalities and further previously known methods.

Complexity in Young's Lattice
Published in Annals of Pure and Applied Logic, Volume 173, Issue 4, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the complexity of the partial order relation of Young's lattice. The definable relations are characterized by establishing the maximal definability property modulo the single automorphism given by conjugation; consequently, as an ordered set Young's lattice has an undecidable elementary theory and is inherently non-finitely axiomatizable but every ideal generates a finitely axiomatizable universal class of equivalence relations. We end with conjectures concerning the complexities of the $Σ_1$ and $Σ_2$-theories.

Cut and project sets with polytopal window I: complexity
Published in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, Volume 41, Issue 5, pp. 1431-1463 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We calculate the growth rate of the complexity function for polytopal cut and project sets. This generalises work of Julien where the almost canonical condition is assumed. The analysis of polytopal cut and project sets has often relied on being able to replace acceptance domains of patterns by so-called cut regions. Our results correct mistakes in the literature where these two notions are incorrectly identified. One may only relate acceptance domains and cut regions when additional conditions on the cut and project set hold. We find a natural condition, called the quasicanonical condition, guaranteeing this property and demonstrate via counterexample that the almost canonical condition is not sufficient for this. We also discuss the relevance of this condition for the current techniques used to study the algebraic topology of polytopal cut and project sets.

Random-Graph Models and Characterization of Granular Networks
Published in J. Complex Netw., cnz037 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
Various approaches and measures from network analysis have been applied to granular and particulate networks to gain insights into their structural, transport, failure-propagation and other systems-level properties. In this article, we examine a variety of common network measures and study their ability to characterize various two-dimensional and three-dimensional spatial random-graph models and empirical two-dimensional granular networks. We identify network measures that are able to distinguish between physically plausible and unphysical spatial network models. Our results also suggest that there are significant differences in the distributions of certain network measures in two and three dimensions, hinting at important differences that we also expect to arise in experimental granular networks.
A Direct Construction of Z-Complementary Pairs Using Generalized Boolean Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The zero correlation zone (ZCZ) ratio, i.e., the ratio of the width of the ZCZ and the length of the sequence plays a major role in reducing interference in an asynchronous environment of communication systems. However, to the best of the author's knowledge, the highest ZCZ ratio for even-length binary Z-complementary pairs (EB-ZCPs) which are directly constructed using generalized Boolean functions (GBFs), is $\frac{2}{3}$. In this research, we present a direct construction of EB-ZCPs through GBFs, which can achieve a ZCZ ratio of $\frac{3}{4}$. In general, the constructed EB-ZCPs are of length $2^{m-1}+2$, having a ZCZ width of $2^{m-2}+2^{π(m-3)}+1$ where pi is a permutation over $m-2$ variables.

Congruence properties for the trinomial coefficients
In this paper, we state and prove some congruence properties for the trinomial coeficients, one of which is similar to the Wolstenholme's theorem.

Group Action Combinatorics
This paper generalizes the basic notions of additive and multiplicative combinatorics to the setting of group actions: if $G$ is a group acting on a set $X$, and we have subsets $A\subseteq G$ and $Y\subseteq X$ such that the set of pairs $g\cdot y$ with $g\in A,y\in Y$ is not much larger than $Y$, what structure must $A$ and $Y$ have? Briefly, what is the structure of sets with small "image set"? In this setting, we develop analogs of Ruzsa's triangle inequality, covering theorems, multiplicative energy, and the Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem. Approximate stabilizers, which we call symmetry sets, play an important role. While our focus is on presenting a general theory, we answer the inverse image set question in some special cases. To do so, we combine the group action version of the Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem with structure theorems for approximate groups and bounds for the sizes of symmetry sets.

Quantum affine algebras and Grassmannians
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the relation between quantum affine algebras of type A and Grassmannian cluster algebras. Hernandez and Leclerc described an isomorphism from the Grothendieck ring of a certain subcategory $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ of $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_n})$-modules to a quotient of the Grassmannian cluster algebra in which certain frozen variables are set to 1. We explain how this induces an isomorphism between the monoid of dominant monomials, used to parameterize simple modules, and a quotient of the monoid of rectangular semistandard Young tableaux. Via the isomorphism, we define an element ch(T) in a Grassmannian cluster algebra for every rectangular tableau T. By results of Kashiwara, Kim, Oh, and Park, and also of Qin, every Grassmannian cluster monomial is of the form ch(T) for some T. Using formulas of Arakawa-Suzuki, we give an explicit expression for ch(T), and also give explicit q-character formulas for finite-dimensional $U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}_n})$-modules. We give a tableau-theoretic rule for performing mutations in Grassmannian cluster algebras. We suggest how our formulas might be used to study reality and primeness of modules, and compatibility of cluster variables.

Some stumbling first steps towards linear homology in a nutshell
In 1985 Bayer and Billera defined a flag vector $f(X)$ for every convex polytope $X$, and proved some fundamental properties. The flag vectors $f(X)$ span a graded ring $\mathcal{R}=\bigoplus_{d\geq0}\mathcal{R}_d$. Here $\mathcal{R}_d$ is the span of the $f(X)$ with $\dim X=d$. It has dimension the Fibonacci number $F_{d+1}$. This paper introduces and explores the conjecture, that $\mathcal{R}$ has a counting basis $\{e_i\}$. If true then the equation $f(X) = \sum g_i(X)e_i$ conjecturally provides a formula for the Betti numbers $g_i(X)$ of a new homology theory. As the $g_i(X)$ are linear functions of $f(X)$, we call the new theory linear homology. Further, assuming the conjecture each $g_i$ will have a rank $r\geq0$. The rank zero part of linear homology will be (middle perversity) intersection homology. The higher rank $g_i$ measure successively more complicated singularities. In dimension $d$ we will have $\dim\mathcal{R}_d$ linearly independent Betti numbers. This paper produces a basis $\{e_i\}$ for $\mathcal{R}$, that is conjecturally a counting basis. Warning: Conjecture withdrawn in version 2.

Normal completions of toric varieties over rank one valuation rings and completions of $Γ$-admissible fans
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that any normal toric variety over a rank one valuation ring admits an equivariant open embedding in a normal toric variety which is proper over the valuation ring, after a base-change by a finite extension of valuation rings. If the value group $Γ$ is discrete or divisible then no base-change is needed. We give explicit examples which show that existing methods do not produce such normal equivariant completions. Our approach is combinatorial and proceeds by showing that $Γ$-admissible fans admit $Γ$-admissible completions. In order to show this we prove a combinatorial analog of noetherian reduction which we believe will be of independent interest.

Cyclic sieving, skew Macdonald polynomials and Schur positivity
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 4, pp. 913-939 • View Publication • BIB
When $λ$ is a partition, the specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomial $E_λ(x;q;0)$ is symmetric and related to a modified Hall--Littlewood polynomial. We show that whenever all parts of the integer partition $λ$ is a multiple of $n$, the underlying set of fillings exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) under a cyclic shift of the columns. The corresponding CSP polynomial is given by $E_λ(x;q;0)$. In addition, we prove a refined cyclic sieving phenomenon where the content of the fillings is fixed. This refinement is closely related to an earlier result by B.~Rhoades. We also introduce a skew version of $E_λ(x;q;0)$. We show that these are symmetric and Schur-positive via a variant of the Robinson--Schenstedt--Knuth correspondence and we also describe crystal raising- and lowering operators for the underlying fillings. Moreover, we show that the skew specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are in some cases vertical-strip LLT polynomials. As a consequence, we get a combinatorial Schur expansion of a new family of LLT polynomials.
Hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fix a hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a {\it Berge copy of $\mathcal{F}$} or {\it Berge-$\mathcal{F}$} if we can choose a subset of each hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$ to obtain a copy of $\mathcal{F}$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is {\it Berge-$\mathcal{F}$-free} if it does not contain a subhypergraph which is Berge copy of $\mathcal{F}$. This is a generalization of the usual, graph based Berge hypergraphs, where $\mathcal{F}$ is a graph. In this paper, we study extremal properties of hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs and generalize several results from the graph based setting. In particular, we show that for any $r$-uniform hypregraph $\mathcal{F}$, the sum of the sizes of the hyperedges of a (not necessarily uniform) Berge-$\mathcal{F}$-free hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices is $o(n^r)$ when all the hyperedges of $\mathcal{H}$ are large enough. We also give a connection between hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs and generalized hypergraph Turán problems.

Self-avoiding walks and polygons on hyperbolic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that for the $d$-regular tessellations of the hyperbolic plane by $k$-gons, there are exponentially more self-avoiding walks of length $n$ than there are self-avoiding polygons of length $n$. We then prove that this property implies that the self-avoiding walk is ballistic, even on an arbitrary vertex-transitive graph. Moreover, for every fixed $k$, we show that the connective constant for self-avoiding walks satisfies the asymptotic expansion $d-1-O(1/d)$ as $d\to \infty$; on the other hand, the connective constant for self-avoiding polygons remains bounded. Finally, we show for all but two tessellations that the number of self-avoiding walks of length $n$ is comparable to the $n$th power of their connective constant. Some of these results were previously obtained by Madras and Wu \cite{MaWuSAW} for all but finitely many regular tessellations of the hyperbolic plane.

Feasible bases for a polytope related to the Hamilton cycle problem
Published in Mathematics of Operations Research 46 (4), 1366-1389 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We study a certain polytope depending on a graph $G$ and a parameter $β\in(0,1)$ which arises from embedding the Hamiltonian cycle problem in a discounted Markov decision process. Eshragh \emph{et al.} conjectured a lower bound on the proportion of feasible bases corresponding to Hamiltonian cycles in the set of all feasible bases. We make progress towards a proof of the conjecture by proving results about the structure of feasible bases. In particular, we prove three main results: (1) the set of feasible bases is independent of the parameter $β$ when the parameter is close to 1, (2) the polytope can be interpreted as a generalized network flow polytope and (3) we deduce a combinatorial interpretation of the feasible bases. We also provide a full characterization for a special class of feasible bases, and we apply this to provide some computational support for the conjecture.

Wiener index of graphs with fixed number of pendant or cut vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Wiener index of a connected graph is defined as the sum of the distances between all unordered pair of its vertices. In this paper, we characterize the graphs which extremize the Wiener index among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $k$ pendant vertices. We also characterize the graph which minimizes the Wiener index over the graphs on $n$ vertices with $s$ cut vertices.

A spectral characterization of the $s$-clique extension of the triangular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A regular graph is co-edge regular if there exists a constant $μ$ such that any two distinct and non-adjacent vertices have exactly $μ$ common neighbors. In this paper, we show that for integers $s\ge 2$ and $n$ large enough, any co-edge-regular graph which is cospectral with the $s$-clique extension of the triangular graph $T((n)$ is exactly the $s$-clique extension of the triangular graph $T(n)$.
