Consider a matrix $M$ chosen uniformly at random from a class of $m \times n$ matrices of zeros and ones with prescribed row and column sums. A partially filled matrix $D$ is a $\mathit{defining}$ $\mathit{set}$ for $M$ if $M$ is the unique member of its class that contains the entries in $D$. The $\mathit{size}$ of a defining set is the number of filled entries. A $\mathit{critical}$ $\mathit{set}$ is a defining set for which the removal of any entry stops it being a defining set. For some small fixed $ε>0$, we assume that $n\le m=o(n^{1+ε})$, and that $λ\le1/2$, where $λ$ is the proportion of entries of $M$ that equal $1$. We also assume that the row sums of $M$ do not vary by more than $\mathcal{O}(n^{1/2+ε})$, and that the column sums do not vary by more than $\mathcal{O}(m^{1/2+ε})$. Under these assumptions we show that $M$ almost surely has no defining set of size less than $λmn-\mathcal{O}(m^{7/4+ε})$. It follows that $M$ almost surely has no critical set of size more than $(1-λ)mn+\mathcal{O}(m^{7/4+ε})$. Our results generalise a theorem of Cavenagh and Ramadurai, who examined the case when $λ=1/2$ and $n=m=2^k$ for an integer $k$.

A graph $Γ$ is $G$-symmetric if $G$ is a group of automorphisms of $Γ$ which is transitive on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices of $Γ$. If $V(Γ)$ admits a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition ${\cal B}$ such that for blocks $B, C \in {\cal B}$ adjacent in the quotient graph $Γ_{\cal B}$ of $Γ$ relative to ${\cal B}$, exactly one vertex of $B$ has no neighbour in $C$, then $Γ$ is called an almost multicover of $Γ_{\cal B}$. In this case an incidence structure with point set ${\cal B}$ arises naturally, and it is a $(G, 2)$-point-transitive and $G$-block-transitive 2-design if in addition $Γ_{\cal B}$ is a complete graph. In this paper we classify all $G$-symmetric graphs $Γ$ such that (i) ${\cal B}$ has block size $|B| \ge 3$; (ii) $Γ_{\cal B}$ is complete and almost multi-covered by $Γ$; (iii) the incidence structure involved is a linear space; and (iv) $G$ contains a regular normal subgroup which is elementary abelian. This classification together with earlier results in [A. Gardiner and C. E. Praeger, Australas. J. Combin. 71 (2018) 403--426], [M.~Giulietti et al., J. Algebraic Combin. 38 (2013) 745--765] and [T. Fang et al., Electronic J. Combin. 23 (2) (2016) P2.27] completes the classification of symmetric graphs satisfying (i) and (ii).
Asymptotic enumeration of orientations of a graph as a function of the out-degree sequence

We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of orientations with given out-degree (score) sequence for a graph $G$. The graph $G$ is assumed to have average degrees at least $n^{1/3 + \varepsilon}$ for some $\varepsilon > 0$, and to have strong mixing properties, while the maximum imbalance (out-degree minus in-degree) of the orientation should be not too large. Our enumeration results have applications to the study of subdigraph occurrences in random orientations with given imbalance sequence. As one step of our calculation, we obtain new bounds for the maximum likelihood estimators for the Bradley-Terry model of paired comparisons.
The minimum possible volume size of u-way (v, k, t) trades
A u-way (v; k; t) trade is a pair T = (X; T_1; T2,...,T_u) such that for each t-subset of v-set X the number of blocks containing this t-subset is the same in each Ti (1 <= i <=u). In the other words for each 1 <= i < j <= u, (X; T_i; T_j) is a (v; k; t) trade. There are many questions concerning u-way trades. The main question is about the minimum volume and minimum foundation size of u-way (v; k; t) trades. In this paper, we determine the minimum volume and minimum foundation size of u-way (v; t + 1; t) trades for each integer number u >2 and t = 2.

Reflexive polytopes have been studied from viewpoints of combinatorics, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. A nef-partition of a reflexive polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is a decomposition $\mathcal{P}=\mathcal{P}_1+\cdots+\mathcal{P}_r$ such that each $\mathcal{P}_i$ is a lattice polytope containing the origin. Batyrev and van Straten gave a combinatorial method for explicit constructions of mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau complete intersections obtained from nef-partitions. In the present paper, by means of Gröbner basis techniques, we give a large family of nef-partitions arising from unimodular configurations.

In this paper, we discuss the toric ideals of Minkowski sums of unit simplices. More precisely, we prove that the toric ideal of Minkowski sum of unit simplices has a squarefree initial ideal and is generated by quadratic binomials. Moreover, we also prove that Minkowski sums of unit simplices have the integer decomposition property. Those results are a partial contribution to Oda conjecture and Bøgvad conjecture.

Given a finite poset $\mathcal{P}$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of elements in the Boolean lattice is induced-$\mathcal{P}$-saturated if $\mathcal{F}$ contains no copy of $\mathcal{P}$ as an induced subposet but every proper superset of $\mathcal{F}$ contains a copy of $\mathcal{P}$ as an induced subposet. The minimum size of an induced-$\mathcal{P}$-saturated family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice, denoted $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{P})$, was first studied by Ferrara et al. (2017).
Our work focuses on strengthening lower bounds. For the 4-point poset known as the diamond, we prove $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{D}_2)\geq\sqrt{n}$, improving upon a logarithmic lower bound. For the antichain with $k+1$ elements, we prove $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{A}_{k+1})\geq (1-o_k(1))\frac{kn}{\log_2 k}$, improving upon a lower bound of $3n-1$ for $k\geq 3$.
On the probability of existence of a universal cycle or a universal word for a set of words

A universal cycle, or u-cycle, for a given set of words is a circular word that contains each word from the set exactly once as a contiguous subword. The celebrated de Bruijn sequences are a particular case of such a u-cycle, where a set in question is the set $A^n$ of all words of length $n$ over a $k$-letter alphabet $A$. A universal word, or u-word, is a linear, i.e. non-circular, version of the notion of a u-cycle, and it is defined similarly.
Removing some words in $A^n$ may, or may not, result in a set of words for which u-cycle, or u-word, exists. The goal of this paper is to study the probability of existence of the universal objects in such a situation. We give lower bounds for the probability in general cases, and also derive explicit answers for the case of removing up to two words in $A^n$, or the case when $k=2$ and $n\leq 4$.

Denote by $m(G)$ the largest size of a minimal generating set of a finite group $G$. We estimate $m(G)$ in terms of $\sum_{p\in π(G)}d_p(G),$ where we are denoting by $d_p(G)$ the minimal number of generators of a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and by $π(G)$ the set of prime numbers dividing the order of $G$.

Rota's basis conjecture (RBC) states that given a collection $\mathcal{B}$ of $n$ bases in a matroid $M$ of rank $n$, one can always find $n$ disjoint rainbow bases with respect to $\mathcal{B}$. In this paper, we show that if $M$ has girth at least $n-o(\sqrt{n})$, and no element of $M$ belongs to more than $o(\sqrt{n})$ bases in $\mathcal{B}$, then one can find at least $n - o(n)$ disjoint rainbow bases with respect to $\mathcal{B}$. This result can be seen as an extension of the work of Geelen and Humphries, who proved RBC in the case where $M$ is paving, and $\mathcal{B}$ is a pairwise disjoint collection. We make extensive use of the cascade idea introduced by Bucić et al.

In the Cograph Deletion (resp., Cograph Editing) problem the input is a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, and the goal is to decide whether there is a set of edges of size at most $k$ whose removal from $G$ (resp., removal and addition to $G$) results in a graph that does not contain an induced path with four vertices. In this paper we give algorithms for Cograph Deletion and Cograph Editing whose running times are $O^*(2.303^k)$ and $O^*(4.329^k)$, respectively.
Geometric Equations for Matroid Varieties

Each point $x$ in Gr$(r,n)$ corresponds to an $r \times n$ matrix $A_x$ which gives rise to a matroid $M_x$ on its columns. Gel'fand, Goresky, MacPherson, and Serganova showed that the sets $\{y \in \mathrm{Gr}(r,n) | M_y = M_x\}$ form a stratification of Gr$(r,n)$ with many beautiful properties. However, results of Mnëv and Sturmfels show that these strata can be quite complicated, and in particular may have arbitrary singularities. We study the ideals $I_x$ of matroid varieties, the Zariski closures of these strata. We construct several classes of examples based on theorems from projective geometry and describe how the Grassmann-Cayley algebra may be used to derive non-trivial elements of $I_x$ geometrically when the combinatorics of the matroid is sufficiently rich.

The Erdős-Gallai Theorem states that every graph of average degree more than $l-2$ contains a path of order $l$ for $l\ge 2$. In this paper, we obtain a stability version of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem in terms of minimum degree. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ and $F=(\bigcup_{i=1}^kP_{2a_i})\bigcup(\bigcup_{i=1}^lP_{2b_i+1})$ be $k+l$ disjoint paths of order $2a_1, \ldots, 2a_{k}, 2b_1+1, \ldots, 2b_l+1,$ respectively, where $k\ge 0$, $0\le l\le 2$, and $k+l\geq 2$. If the minimum degree $δ(G)\ge \sum_{i=1}^ka_i+\sum_{i=1}^lb_i-1$, then $F\subseteq G$ except several classes of graphs for sufficiently large $n$, which extends and strengths the results of Ali and Staton for an even path and Yuan and Nikiforov for an odd path.
b-continuity and Partial Grundy Coloring of graphs with large girth

A b-coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that each color class has at least one vertex which is adjacent to each other color class. The b-spectrum of $G$ is the set $S_{b}(G)$ of integers $k$ such that $G$ has a b-coloring with $k$ colors and $b(G)=\max S_{b}(G)$ is the b-chromatic number of $G$. A graph is b-continous if $S_{b}(G)=[χ(G),b(G)]\cap \mathbb{Z}$. An infinite number of graphs that are not b-continuous is known. It is also known that graphs with girth at least 10 are b-continuous.
A partial Grundy coloring is a proper coloring $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that each color class $i$ contains some vertex $u$ that is adjacent to every color class $j$ such that $j<i$. The partial Grundy number of $G$ is the maximum value $\partialΓ(G)$ for which $G$ has a partial Grundy coloring.
In this work, we prove that graphs with girth at least 8 are b-continuous, and that the b-spectrum of a graph $G$ with girth at least 7 contains the integers between $2χ(G)$ and $b(G)$. We also prove that $\partialΓ(G)$ equals a known upper bound when $G$ is a graph with girth at least 7. These results generalize previous ones by Linhares-Sales and Silva (2017), and by Shi et al.(2005).
On List Equitable Total Colorings of the Generalized Theta Graph

In 2003 Kostochka, Pelsmajer, and West introduced a list analogue of equitable coloring called equitable choosability. A $k$-assignment, $L$, for a graph $G$ assigns a list, $L(v)$, of $k$ available colors to each $v \in V(G)$, and an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring, $f$, of $G$ such that $f(v) \in L(v)$ for each $v \in V(G)$ and each color class of $f$ has size at most $\lceil |V(G)|/k \rceil$. In 2018, Kaul, Mudrock, and Pelsmajer subsequently introduced the List Equitable Total Coloring Conjecture which states that if $T$ is a total graph of some simple graph, then $T$ is equitably $k$-choosable for each $k \geq \max \{χ_\ell(T), Δ(T)/2 + 2 \}$ where $Δ(T)$ is the maximum degree of a vertex in $T$ and $χ_\ell(T)$ is the list chromatic number of $T$. In this paper we verify the List Equitable Total Coloring Conjecture for subdivisions of stars and the generalized theta graph.
A new refinement of Euler numbers on counting alternating permutations
At a crossroads of calculus and combinatorics, the generating function of secant and tangent numbers (Euler numbers) provides enumeration of alternating permutations. In this article, we present a new refinement of Euler numbers to answer the combinatorial question on some particular relation of Euler numbers proved by Heneghan-Petersen, Power series for up-down min-max permutations, College Math. Journal, Vol. 45, No. 2 (2014), 83-91.

In 2010, Gábor Czédli and E. Tamás Schmidt mentioned that the best cover-preserving embedding of a given semimodular lattice is not known yet [A cover-preserving embedding of semimodular lattices into geometric lattices, Advances in Mathematics 225 (2010) 2455-2463]. That is to say: What are the geometric lattices $G$ such that a given finite semimodular lattice $L$ has a cover-preserving embedding into $G$ with the smallest $|G|$? In this paper, we propose an algorithm to calculate all the best extending cover-preserving geometric lattices $G$ of a given semimodular lattice $L$ and prove that the length and the number of atoms of every best extending cover-preserving geometric lattice $G$ equal the length of $L$ and the number of non-zero join-irreducible elements of $L$, respectively. Therefore, we comprehend the best cover-preserving embedding of a given semimodular lattice.

This paper considers flag-transitive $4$-$(q+1,k,λ)$ designs with $λ\geq5$ and $q+1>k>4$. Let the automorphism group of a design $\cal D$ be a simple group $G=PSL(2,q)$. Depend on the fact that the setwise stabilizer $G_B$ must be one of twelve kinds of subgroups, up to isomorphism we get the following two results. (i) If $10\geq λ\geq 5$, then except $(G,G_x,G_B,k,λ)=(PSL(2,761),{E_{761}}\rtimes {C_{380}},S_4,24,7)$ or $(PSL(2,512),{E_{512}}\rtimes {C_{511}},{D_{18}},18,8)$ undecided, $\cal D$ is a $4$-$(24,8,5)$, $4$-$(9,8,5)$, $4$-$(8,6,6)$, $4$-$(10,9,6)$, $4$-$(9,6,10)$, $4$-$(9,7,10)$, $4$-$(12,11,8)$ or $4$-$(14,13,10)$ design with
$G_B=D_8$, ${E_8}\rtimes {C_7}$, $D_6$, ${E_9}\rtimes {C_4}$, $PSL(2,2)$, $D_{14}$, ${E_{11}}\rtimes {C_{5}}$ or ${E_{13}}\rtimes {C_6}$ respectively.
(ii) If $λ>10$, ${G_B}=A_4$, $S_4$, $A_5$, $PGL(2,q_0)$($g>1$ even) or $PSL(2,q_0)$, where ${q_0}^g=q$, then there is no such design.
Independent Double Roman Domination on Block Graphs
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, $f:V \rightarrow \{0,1,2 \}$ is the Italian dominating function of $G$ if $f$ satisfies $\sum_{u \in N(v)}f(u) \geq 2$ when $f(v)=0$. Denote $w(f)=\sum_{v \in V}f(v)$ as the weight of $f$. Let $V_i=\{v:f(v)=i\},i=0,1,2$, we call $f$ the independent Italian dominating function if $V_1 \cup V_2$ is an independent set. The independent Italian domination number of $G$ is the minimum weight of independent Italian dominating function $f$, denoted by $i_{I}(G)$. We equivalently transform the independent domination problem of the connected block graph $G$ to the induced independent domination problem of its block-cutpoint graph $T$, then a linear time algorithm is given to find $i_{I}(G)$ of any connected block graph $G$ based on dynamic programming.
