Breaking Symmetry in Graphs by Resolving Sets
Let ${\rm dim}(G)$ and $D(G)$ respectively denote the metric dimension and the distinguishing number of a graph $G$. It is proved that $D(G) \le {\rm dim}(G)+1$ holds for every connected graph $G$. Among trees, exactly paths and stars attain the bound, and among connected unicyclic graphs such graphs are $t$-cycles for $t\in \{3,4,5\}$. It is shown that for any $1\leq n< m$, there exists a graph $G$ with $D(G)=n$ and ${\rm dim}(G)=m$. Using the bound $D(G) \le {\rm dim}(G)+1$, graphs with $D(G) = n(G)-2$ are classified.

On k-(total) limited packing in graphs
A set $B\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-total limited packing set in a graph $G$ if $|B\cap N(v)|\leq k$ for any vertex $v\in V(G)$. The $k$-total limited packing number $L_{k,t}(G)$ is the maximum cardinality of a $k$-total limited packing set in $G$. Here, we give some results on the $k$-total limited packing number of graphs emphasizing trees, especially when $k=2$. We also study the $2$-(total) limited packing number of some product graphs. A $k$-limited packing partition ($k$LPP) of graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $k$-limited packing sets. The minimum cardinality of a $k$LPP is called the $k$LPP number of $G$ and is denoted by $χ_{\times k}(G)$, and we obtain some results for this parameter.

A Connection between Metric Dimension and Distinguishing Number of Graphs
In this paper, we introduce a connection between two classical concepts of graph theory: \; metric dimension and distinguishing number. For a given graph $G$, let ${\rm dim}(G)$ and $D(G)$ represent its metric dimension and distinguishing number, respectively. We show that in connected graphs, any resolving set breaks the symmetry in the graphs. Precisely, if $G$ is a connected graph with a resolving set $S=\{v_1, v_2, \ldots, v_n \}$, then $\{\{v_1\}, \{v_2\}, \ldots, \{v_n\}, V(G)\setminus S \}$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into a distinguishing coloring, and as a consequence $D(G)\leq {\rm dim}(G)+1$. Furthermore, we construct graphs $G$ such that $D(G)=n$ and ${\rm dim}(G)=m$ for all values of $n$ and $m$, where $1\leq n< m$. Using this connection, we have characterized all graphs $G$ of order $n$ with $D(G) \in \{n-1, n-2\}$. For any graph $G$, let $G_c = G$ if $G$ is connected, and $G_c = \overline{G}$ if $G$ is disconnected. Let $G^{\ast}$ denote the twin graph obtained from $G$ by contracting any maximal set of vertices with the same open or close neighborhood into a vertex. Let {\rsfs F} be the set of all graphs except graphs $G$ with the property that ${\rm dim}(G_c)=|V(G)|-4$, ${\rm diam}(G_c) \in \{2, 3\}$ and $5\leq |V(G_{c}^{\ast})| \leq 9$. We characterize all graphs $G \in$ {\rsfs F} of order $n$ with the property that $D(G)= n-3$.
Limited packings: related vertex partitions and duality issues

A $k$-limited packing partition ($k$LP partition) of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $k$-limited packing sets. We consider the $k$LP partitions with minimum cardinality (with emphasis on $k=2$). The minimum cardinality is called $k$LP partition number of $G$ and denoted by $χ_{\times k}(G)$. This problem is the dual problem of $k$-tuple domatic partitioning as well as a generalization of the well-studied $2$-distance coloring problem in graphs. We give the exact value of $χ_{\times2}$ for trees and bound it for general graphs. A section of this paper is devoted to the dual of this problem, where we give a solution to an open problem posed in $1998$. We also revisit the total limited packing number in this paper and prove that the problem of computing this parameter is NP-hard even for some special families of graphs. We give some inequalities concerning this parameter and discuss the difference between $2$TLP number and $2$LP number with emphasis on trees.
Injective coloring of product graphs
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
The problem of injective coloring in graphs can be revisited through two different approaches: coloring the two-step graphs and vertex partitioning of graphs into open packing sets, each of which is equivalent to the injective coloring problem itself. Taking these facts into account, we observe that the injective coloring lies between graph coloring and domination theory. We make use of these three points of view in this paper so as to investigate the injective coloring of some well-known graph products. We bound the injective chromatic number of direct and lexicographic product graphs from below and above. In particular, we completely determine this parameter for the direct product of two cycles. We also give a closed formula for the corona product of two graphs.

Further results on outer independent $2$-rainbow dominating functions of graphs
Published in RAIRO - Operations Research (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a graph. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{P}(\{1,2\})$ is a $2$-rainbow dominating function if for every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=\emptyset$, $f\big{(}N(v)\big{)}=\{1,2\}$. An outer-independent $2$-rainbow dominating function (OI$2$RD function) of $G$ is a $2$-rainbow dominating function $f$ for which the set of all $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=\emptyset$ is independent. The outer independent $2$-rainbow domination number (OI$2$RD number) $γ_{oir2}(G)$ is the minimum weight of an OI$2$RD function of $G$. In this paper, we first prove that $n/2$ is a lower bound on the OI$2$RD number of a connected claw-free graph of order $n$ and characterize all such graphs for which the equality holds, solving an open problem given in an earlier paper. In addition, a study of this parameter for some graph products is carried out. In particular, we give a closed (resp. an exact) formula for the OI$2$RD number of rooted (resp. corona) product graphs and prove upper bounds on this parameter for the Cartesian product and direct product of two graphs.
Revisiting $k$-tuple dominating sets with emphasis on small values of $k$

For any graph $G$ of order $n$ with degree sequence $d_{1}\geq\cdots\geq d_{n}$, we define the double Slater number $s\ell_{\times2}(G)$ as the smallest integer $t$ such that $t+d_{1}+\cdots+d_{t-e}\geq2n-p$ in which $e$ and $p$ are the number of end-vertices and penultimate vertices of $G$, respectively. We show that $γ_{\times2}(G)\geq s\ell_{\times2}(G)$, where $γ_{\times2}(G)$ is the well-known double domination number of a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices. We prove that the problem of deciding whether the equality holds for a given graph is NP-complete even when restricted to $4$-partite graphs. We also prove that the problem of computing $γ_{\times2}(G)$ in NP-hard even for comparability graphs of diameter two. Some results concerning these two parameters are given in this paper improving and generalizing some earlier results on double domination in graphs. We give an upper bound on the $k$-tuple domatic number of graphs with characterization of all graphs attaining the bound. Finally, we characterize the family of all full graphs, leading to a solution to an open problem given in a paper by Cockayne and Hedetniemi ($1977$).
Restrained condition on double Roman dominating functions
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of restrained double Roman domination in graphs. For a graph $G=\big{(}V(G),E(G)\big{)}$, a double Roman dominating function $f$ is called a restrained double Roman dominating function (RDRD function) if the subgraph induced by $\{v\in V(G)\mid f(v)=0\}$ has no isolated vertices. The restrained double Roman domination number (RDRD number) $γ_{rdR}(G)$ is the minimum weight $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$ taken over all RDRD functions of $G$. We first prove that the problem of computing $γ_{rdR}$ is NP-hard even for planar graphs, but it is solvable in linear time when restricted to bounded clique-width graphs such as trees, cographs and distance-hereditary graphs. Relationships between $γ_{rdR}$ and some well-known parameters such as restrained domination number $γ_{r}$, domination number $γ$ and restrained Roman domination number $γ_{rR}$ are investigated in this paper by bounding $γ_{rdR}$ from below and above involving $γ_{r}$, $γ$ and $γ_{rR}$ for general graphs, respectively. We prove that $γ_{rdR}(T)\geq n+2$ for any tree $T\neq K_{1,n-1}$ of order $n\geq2$ and characterize the family of all trees attaining the lower bound. The characterization of graphs with small RDRD numbers is given in this paper.

A Completion of the spectrum of 3-way $(v,k,2)$ Steiner trades
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 3-way $(v,k,t)$ trade $T$ of volume $m$ consists of three pairwise disjoint collections $T_1$, $T_2$ and $T_3$, each of $m$ blocks of size $k$, such that for every $t$-subset of $v$-set $V$, the number of blocks containing this $t$-subset is the same in each $T_i$ for $1\leq i\leq 3$. If any $t$-subset of found($T$) occurs at most once in each $T_i$ for $1\leq i\leq 3$, then $T$ is called 3-way $(v,k,t)$ Steiner trade. We attempt to complete the spectrum $S_{3s}(v,k)$, the set of all possible volume sizes, for 3-way $(v,k,2)$ Steiner trades, by applying some block designs, such as BIBDs, RBs, GDDs, RGDDs, and $r\times s$ packing grid blocks. Previously, we obtained some results about the existence some 3-way $(v,k,2)$ Steiner trades. In particular, we proved that there exists a 3-way $(v,k,2)$ Steiner trade of volume $m$ when $12(k-1)\leq m$ for $15\leq k$ (Rashidi and Soltankhah, 2016). Now, we show that the claim is correct also for $k\leq 14$.

The minimum possible volume size of u-way (v, k, t) trades
A u-way (v; k; t) trade is a pair T = (X; T_1; T2,...,T_u) such that for each t-subset of v-set X the number of blocks containing this t-subset is the same in each Ti (1 <= i <=u). In the other words for each 1 <= i < j <= u, (X; T_i; T_j) is a (v; k; t) trade. There are many questions concerning u-way trades. The main question is about the minimum volume and minimum foundation size of u-way (v; k; t) trades. In this paper, we determine the minimum volume and minimum foundation size of u-way (v; t + 1; t) trades for each integer number u >2 and t = 2.

On the possible volume of $μ$-$(v,k,t)$ trades
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $μ$-way $(v,k,t)$ $trade$ of volume $m$ consists of $μ$ disjoint collections $T_1$, $T_2, \dots T_μ$, each of $m$ blocks, such that for every $t$-subset of $v$-set $V$ the number of blocks containing this t-subset is the same in each $T_i\ (1\leq i\leq μ)$. In other words any pair of collections $\{T_i,T_j\}$, $1\leq i<j \leq μ$ is a $(v,k,t)$ trade of volume $m$. In this paper we investigate the existence of $μ$-way $(v,k,t)$ trades and also we prove the existence of: (i)~3-way $(v,k,1)$ trades (Steiner trades) of each volume $m,m\geq2$. (ii) 3-way $(v,k,2)$ trades of each volume $m,m\geq6$ except possibly $m=7$. We establish the non-existence of 3-way $(v,3,2)$ trade of volume 7. It is shown that the volume of a 3-way $(v,k,2)$ Steiner trade is at least $2k$ for $k\geq4$. Also the spectrum of 3-way $(v,k,2)$ Steiner trades for $k=3$ and 4 are specified.

The 3-way intersection problem for S(2, 4, v) designs
In this paper the 3-way intersection problem for $S(2,4,v)$ designs is investigated. Let $b_{v}=\frac {v(v-1)}{12}$ and $I_{3}[v]=\{0,1,...,b_{v}\}\setminus\{b_{v}-7,b_{v}-6,b_{v}-5,b_{v}-4,b_{v}-3,b_{v}-2,b_{v}-1\}$. Let $J_{3}[v]=\{k|$ there exist three $S(2,4,v)$ designs with $k$ same common blocks$\}$. We show that $J_{3}[v]\subseteq I_{3}[v]$ for any positive integer $v\equiv1, 4\ (\rm mod \ 12)$ and $J_{3}[v]=I_{3}[v]$, for $ v\geq49$ and $v=13 $. We find $J_{3}[16]$ completely. Also we determine some values of $J_{3}[v]$ for $\ v=25,28,37$ and 40.

On the Biclique cover of the complete graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be a set of $k$ positive integers. A biclique cover of type $K$ of a graph $G$ is a collection of complete bipartite subgraphs of $G$ such that for every edge $e$ of $G$, the number of bicliques need to cover $e$ is a member of $K$. If $K=\{1,2,..., k\}$ then the maximum number of the vertices of a complete graph that admits a biclique cover of type $K$ with $d$ bicliques, $n(k,d)$, is the maximum possible cardinality of a $k$-neighborly family of standard boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we obtain an upper bound for $n(k,d)$. Also, we show that the upper bound can be improved in some special cases. Moreover, we show that the existence of the biclique cover of type $K$ of the complete bipartite graph with a perfect matching removed is equivalent to the existence of a cross $K$-intersection family.
A Note on d-Biclique Covers
A d-biclique cover of a graph G is a collection of bicliques of G such that each edge of G is in at least d of the bicliques. The number of bicliques in a minimum d-biclique cover of G is called the d-biclique covering number of G and is denoted by ${bc}_d(G)$. In this paper, we present an upper bound for the d- biclique covering number of the lexicographic product of graphs. Also, we introduce some bounds of this parameter for some graph constructions and obtain the exact value of the d-biclique covering number of some graphs.

Smallest defining sets of super-simple 2 - (v, 4,1) directed designs
A $2-(v,k,λ)$ directed design (or simply a $2-(v,k,λ)DD$) is super-simple if its underlying $2-(v,k,2λ)BIBD$ is super-simple, that is, any two blocks of the $BIBD$ intersect in at most two points. A $2-(v,k,λ)DD$ is simple if its underlying $2-(v,k,2λ)BIBD$ is simple, that is, it has no repeated blocks. A set of blocks which is a subset of a unique $2-(v,k,λ)DD$ is said to be a defining set of the directed design. A smallest defining set, is a defining set which has smallest cardinality. In this paper simultaneously we show that the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a super-simple $2-(v,4,1)DD$ is $v\equiv1\ ({\rm mod}\ 3)$ and for these values except $v=7$, there exists a super-simple $2-(v,4,1)DD$ whose smallest defining sets have at least a half of the blocks. And also for all $ε> 0$ there exists $v_0(ε)$ such that for all admissible $v>v_0$ there exists a $2-(v,4,1)DD$ whose smallest defining sets have at least $(5/8-\frac{c}{v})\mid \mathcal{B}\mid$ blocks, for suitable positive constant c.

Super-simple 2-(v; 5; 1) directed designs and their smallest defining sets
In this paper we investigate the spectrum of super-simple 2-$(v,5,1)$ directed designs (or simply super-simple 2-$(v,5,1)$DDs) and also the size of their smallest defining sets. We show that for all $v\equiv1,5\ ({\rm mod}\ 10)$ except $v=5,15$ there exists a super-simple $(v,5,1)DD$. Also for these parameters, except possibly $v=11,91$, there exists a super-simple 2-$(v,5,1)$DD whose smallest defining sets have at least a half of the blocks.

On total dominating sets in graphs
A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G(V,E)$ is called a dominating set if every vertex $v\in V$ is either an element of $S$ or is adjacent to an element of $S$. A set $S$ of vertices in a graph $G(V,E)$ is called a total dominating set if every vertex $v\in V$ is adjacent to an element of $S$. The domination number of a graph $G$ denoted by $γ(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a dominating set in $G$. Respectively the total domination number of a graph $G$ denoted by $γ_t(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a total dominating set in $G$. An upper bound for $γ_t(G)$ which has been achieved by Cockayne and et al. in $\cite{coc}$ is: for any graph $G$ with no isolated vertex and maximum degree $Δ(G)$ and $n$ vertices, $γ_t(G)\leq n-Δ(G)+1$. Here we characterize bipartite graphs and trees which achieve this upper bound. Further we present some another upper and lower bounds for $γ_t(G)$. Also, for circular complete graphs, we determine the value of $γ_t(G)$.

On the non-existence of some Steiner $t$-$(v,k)$ trades of certain volumes
Mahmoodian and Soltankhah $\cite{MMS}$ conjectured that there does not exist any $t$-$(v,k)$ trade of volume $s_{i}< s <s_{i+1}$, where $s_{i}=2^{t+1}-2^{t-i}, i=0,1,..., t-1$. Also they showed that the conjecture is true for $i=0$. In this paper we prove the correctness of this conjecture for Steiner trades.

Constructing regular graphs with smallest defining number
In a given graph $G$, a set $S$ of vertices with an assignment of colors is a {\sf defining set of the vertex coloring of $G$}, if there exists a unique extension of the colors of $S$ to a $\Cchi(G)$-coloring of the vertices of $G$. A defining set with minimum cardinality is called a {\sf smallest defining set} (of vertex coloring) and its cardinality, the {\sf defining number}, is denoted by $d(G, \Cchi)$. Let $ d(n, r, \Cchi = k)$ be the smallest defining number of all $r$-regular $k$-chromatic graphs with $n$ vertices. Mahmoodian et. al \cite{rkgraph} proved that, for a given $k$ and for all $n \geq 3k$, if $r \geq 2(k-1)$ then $d(n, r, \Cchi = k)=k-1$. In this paper we show that for a given $k$ and for all $n < 3k$ and $r\geq 2(k-1)$, $d(n, r, \Cchi=k)=k-1$.
