Frugal coloring of graphs revisited
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $t$, an independent set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is $t$-frugal if every vertex has at most $t$ neighbors in $S$. A $t$-frugal coloring of $G$ is a partition of its vertex set into $t$-frugal independent sets. The maximum cardinality of a $t$-frugal independent set in $G$ is denoted by $α_t^f(G)$, while the minimum cardinality of a $t$-frugal coloring of $G$, $χ_t^f(G)$, is called the $t$-frugal chromatic number of $G$. Frugal colorings were introduced in 1998 and studied later in just a handful of papers. In this paper, we revisit this concept. While the NP-hardness of frugal coloring is known, we prove that the decision version of $α_t^f$ is NP-complete even for bipartite graphs, and present a linear-time algorithm to determine its value for trees. We prove a general sharp lower bound on $χ_{t}^{f}(G)$ expressed in terms of $α_{t}^{f}(G)$ and size of $G$. We also give a sharp upper bound on the $α_2^f$ of any graph $G$, which in the case of graphs with minimum degree $δ\geq2$ simplifies to $α_2^f(G)\le 2n/(δ+2)$. We prove that $3\leχ_2^f(G)\le 5$ holds for any graph $G$ with $Δ(G)=3$. For several classes of graphs such as block graphs, the Cartesian and strong products of multiple two-way infinite paths, we determine the exact values of $α_2^f$. We provide sharp bounds on the $α_2^f$ in all four standard graph products, which are expressed as different invariants of their factors. Finally, we obtain Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequalities for the sum of the $2$-frugal chromatic numbers of $G$ and its complement from below and from above by functions of the order of $G$. For the upper bound $χ_{2}^{f}(G)+χ_{2}^{f}(\overline{G})\leq 3n/2$, we characterize the family of extremal graphs $G$.
Distance mutual-visibility coloring: relations with (total) domination, exact distance graphs and graph products
The concept of mutual-visibility (MV) has been extended in several directions. A vertex subset $S$ of a graph $G$ is a $k$-distance mutual-visibility ($k$DMV) set if for any two vertices in $S$, there is a geodesic between them of length at most $k$ whose internal vertices are not in $S$. In this paper, we combine this with the MV coloring as follows. For any integer $k\geq1$, a $k$DMV coloring of $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $k$DMV sets, and the $k$DMV chromatic number $χ_{μ_k}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of such a partition. When $k=1$ or $k\ge {\rm diam}(G)$, it equals the clique cover number $θ(G)$ or the MV chromatic number $χ_μ(G)$, respectively. So, our attention is given to $1<k<{\rm diam}(G)$ with $k=2$ producing the most interesting results. We prove that $χ_{μ_2}(G)\le|V(G)|/2$ and present large families of graphs that attain the bound. In addition, $χ_{μ_2}(G)$ is bounded from above by the total domination number $γ_t(G)$ if $G$ is isolate-free, while in graphs $G$ with girth $g(G)\geq7$, $χ_{μ_2}(G)$ is bounded from below by the domination number $γ(G)$. A surprising relation with the exact distance-2 graphs is found, which results in $θ(G^{[\natural2]})=γ_{t}(G)$ for any isolate-free graph $G$ with $g(G)\geq7$. The relation is explored further in lexicographic product graphs, where we prove the sharp inequalities $χ_{μ_{2}}(G\circ H)\leq θ(G^{[\natural2]})\leq θ\big{(}(G\circ H)^{[\natural2]}\big{)}$. We also prove a sharp lower (resp. upper) bound on $χ_{μ_2}$ (resp. $χ_{μ_k}$) for the Cartesian (resp. strong) product of two connected graphs and show that they are widely sharp. Finally, we characterize the block graphs $G$ with $χ_{μ_k}(G)=χ_μ(G)$, where $k={\rm diam}(G)-1$.
On $k$-coalition in graphs: bounds and exact values
Given a graph $G=\big{(}V(G),E(G)\big{)}$, a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is called a $k$-dominating set if every vertex in $V(G)\setminus S$ has at least $k$ neighbors in $S$. Two disjoint sets $A,B\subset V(G)$ form a $k$-coalition in $G$ if neither set is a $k$-dominating set in $G$ but their union $A\cup B$ is a $k$-dominating set. A partition $Ω$ of $V(G)$ is a $k$-coalition partition if each set in $Ω$ is either a $k$-dominating set of cardinality $k$ or forms a $k$-coalition with another set in $Ω$. The $k$-coalition number $C_{k}(G)$ equals the maximum cardinality of a $k$-coalition partition of $G$. In this work, we give general upper and lower bounds on this parameter. In particular, we show that if $G$ has minimum degree $δ\ge 2$ and maximum degree $Δ\ge 4 \lfloor δ/2 \rfloor$, then $C_{2}(G) \leq (Δ-2\lfloor δ/2 \rfloor+1)(\lfloor δ/2 \rfloor+1) + \lceil δ/2 \rceil+1$, and this bound is sharp. If $T$ is a tree of order~$n \ge 2$, then we prove the upper bound $C_{2}(T) \leq \big\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\big\rfloor+1$ and we characterize the extremal trees achieving equality in this bound. We determine the exact value of $C_{k}(G)$ for any cubic graph $G$ and $k\geq2$. Finally, we give the exact value of $C_{k}$ for any complete bipartite graph, which completes a partial result and resolves an issue from an earlier paper.
Independent mutual-visibility coloring and related concepts
Given a graph $G$, a subset $M\subseteq V(G)$ is a mutual-visibility (MV) set if for every $u,v\in M$, there exists a $u,v$-geodesic whose internal vertices are not in $M$. We investigate proper vertex colorings of graphs whose color classes are mutual-visibility sets. The main concepts that arise in this investigation are independent mutual-visibility (IMV) sets and vertex partitions into these sets (IMV colorings). The IMV number $μ_{i}$ and the IMV chromatic number $χ_{μ_{i}}$ are defined as maximum and minimum cardinality taken over all IMV sets and IMV colorings, respectively. Along the way, we also continue with the study of MV chromatic number $χ_μ$ (as the smallest number of sets in a vertex partition into MV sets), which was initiated in an earlier paper. We establish a close connection between the (I)MV chromatic numbers of subdivisions of complete graphs and Ramsey numbers $R(4^k;2)$. From the computational point of view, we prove that the problems of computing $χ_{μ_{i}}$ and $μ_{i}$ are NP-complete, and that it is NP-hard to decide whether a graph $G$ satisfies $\imv(G)=α(G)$ where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. Several tight bounds on $χ_{μ_{i}}$, $χ_μ$ and $μ_{i}$ are given. Exact values/formulas for these parameters in some classical families of graphs are proved. In particular, we prove that $χ_{μ_{i}}(T)=χ_μ(T)$ holds for any tree $T$ of order at least $3$, and determine their exact formulas in the case of lexicographic product graphs. Finally, we give tight bounds on the (I)MV chromatic numbers for the Cartesian and strong product graphs, which lead to exact values in some important families of product graphs.

Total $k$-coalition: bounds, exact values and an application to double coalition

Let $G=\big{(}V(G),E(G)\big{)}$ be a graph with minimum degree $k$. A subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ is called a total $k$-dominating set if every vertex in $G$ has at least $k$ neighbors in $S$. Two disjoint sets $A,B\subset V(G)$ form a total $k$-coalition in $G$ if none of them is a total $k$-dominating set in $G$ but their union $A\cup B$ is a total $k$-dominating set. A vertex partition $Ω=\{V_{1},\ldots,V_{|Ω|}\}$ of $G$ is a total $k$-coalition partition if each set $V_{i}$ forms a total $k$-coalition with another set $V_{j}$. The total $k$-coalition number ${\rm TC}_{k}(G)$ of $G$ equals the maximum cardinality of a total $k$-coalition partition of $G$. In this paper, the above-mentioned concept are investigated from combinatorial points of view. Several sharp lower and upper bounds on ${\rm TC}_{k}(G)$ are proved, where the main emphasis is given on the invariant when $k=2$. As a consequence, the exact values of ${\rm TC}_2(G)$ when $G$ is a cubic graph or a $4$-regular graph are obtained. By using similar methods, an open question posed by Henning and Mojdeh regarding double coalition is answered. Moreover, ${\rm TC}_3(G)$ is determined when $G$ is a cubic graph.
Injective colorings of Sierpiński-like graphs and Kneser graphs
Two relationships between the injective chromatic number and, respectively, chromatic number and chromatic index, are proved. They are applied to determine the injective chromatic number of Sierpiński graphs and to give a short proof that Sierpiński graphs are Class $1$. Sierpiński-like graphs are also considered, including generalized Sierpiński graphs over cycles and rooted products. It is proved that the injective chromatic number of a rooted product of two graphs lies in a set of six possible values. Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n,r)$ are considered with respect of being perfect injectively colorable, where a graph is perfect injectively colorable if it has an injective coloring in which every color class forms an open packing of largest cardinality. In particular, all Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n, r)$ with $n \ge 3r-1$ are perfect injectively colorable graph, while $K(7,3)$ is not.
Induced matching vs edge open packing: trees and product graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2025 • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, the maximum size of an induced subgraph of $G$ each component of which is a star is called the edge open packing number, $ρ_{e}^{o}(G)$, of $G$. Similarly, the maximum size of an induced subgraph of $G$ each component of which is the star $K_{1,1}$ is the induced matching number, $ν_I(G)$, of $G$. While the inequality $ρ_e^o(G)\geq ν_{I}(G)$ clearly holds for all graphs $G$, we provide a structural characterization of those trees that attain the equality. We prove that the induced matching number of the lexicographic product $G\circ H$ of arbitrary two graphs $G$ and $H$ equals $α(G)ν_I(H)$. By similar techniques, we prove sharp lower and upper bounds on the edge open packing number of the lexicographic product of graphs, which in particular lead to NP-hardness results in triangular graphs for both invariants studied in this paper. For the direct product $G\times H$ of two graphs we provide lower bounds on $ν_I(G\times H)$ and $ρ_{e}^{o}(G\times H)$, both of which are widely sharp. We also present sharp lower bounds for both invariants in the Cartesian and the strong product of two graphs. Finally, we consider the edge open packing number in hypercubes establishing the exact values of $ρ_e^o(Q_n)$ when $n$ is a power of $2$, and present a closed formula for the induced matching number of the rooted product of arbitrary two graphs over an arbitrary root vertex.

Edge open packing: complexity, algorithmic aspects, and bounds
Given a graph $G$, two edges $e_{1},e_{2}\in E(G)$ are said to have a common edge $e$ if $e$ joins an endvertex of $e_{1}$ to an endvertex of $e_{2}$. A subset $B\subseteq E(G)$ is an edge open packing set in $G$ if no two edges of $B$ have a common edge in $G$, and the maximum cardinality of such a set in $G$ is called the edge open packing number, $ρ_{e}^{o}(G)$, of $G$. In this paper, we prove that the decision version of the edge open packing number is NP-complete even when restricted to graphs with universal vertices, Eulerian bipartite graphs, and planar graphs with maximum degree $4$, respectively. In contrast, we present a linear-time algorithm that computes the edge open packing number of a tree. We also resolve two problems posed in the seminal paper [Edge open packing sets in graphs, RAIRO-Oper.\ Res.\ 56 (2022) 3765--3776]. Notably, we characterize the graphs $G$ that attain the upper bound $ρ_e^o(G)\le |E(G)|/δ(G)$, and provide lower and upper bounds for the edge-deleted subgraph of a graph and establish the corresponding realization result.
Limited packings: related vertex partitions and duality issues

A $k$-limited packing partition ($k$LP partition) of a graph $G$ is a partition of $V(G)$ into $k$-limited packing sets. We consider the $k$LP partitions with minimum cardinality (with emphasis on $k=2$). The minimum cardinality is called $k$LP partition number of $G$ and denoted by $χ_{\times k}(G)$. This problem is the dual problem of $k$-tuple domatic partitioning as well as a generalization of the well-studied $2$-distance coloring problem in graphs. We give the exact value of $χ_{\times2}$ for trees and bound it for general graphs. A section of this paper is devoted to the dual of this problem, where we give a solution to an open problem posed in $1998$. We also revisit the total limited packing number in this paper and prove that the problem of computing this parameter is NP-hard even for some special families of graphs. We give some inequalities concerning this parameter and discuss the difference between $2$TLP number and $2$LP number with emphasis on trees.
Injective coloring of product graphs
Published in Bulletin of the Malaysian Mathematical Sciences Society, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
The problem of injective coloring in graphs can be revisited through two different approaches: coloring the two-step graphs and vertex partitioning of graphs into open packing sets, each of which is equivalent to the injective coloring problem itself. Taking these facts into account, we observe that the injective coloring lies between graph coloring and domination theory. We make use of these three points of view in this paper so as to investigate the injective coloring of some well-known graph products. We bound the injective chromatic number of direct and lexicographic product graphs from below and above. In particular, we completely determine this parameter for the direct product of two cycles. We also give a closed formula for the corona product of two graphs.

Further results on outer independent $2$-rainbow dominating functions of graphs

Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a graph. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{P}(\{1,2\})$ is a $2$-rainbow dominating function if for every vertex $v$ with $f(v)=\emptyset$, $f\big{(}N(v)\big{)}=\{1,2\}$. An outer-independent $2$-rainbow dominating function (OI$2$RD function) of $G$ is a $2$-rainbow dominating function $f$ for which the set of all $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=\emptyset$ is independent. The outer independent $2$-rainbow domination number (OI$2$RD number) $γ_{oir2}(G)$ is the minimum weight of an OI$2$RD function of $G$. In this paper, we first prove that $n/2$ is a lower bound on the OI$2$RD number of a connected claw-free graph of order $n$ and characterize all such graphs for which the equality holds, solving an open problem given in an earlier paper. In addition, a study of this parameter for some graph products is carried out. In particular, we give a closed (resp. an exact) formula for the OI$2$RD number of rooted (resp. corona) product graphs and prove upper bounds on this parameter for the Cartesian product and direct product of two graphs.
Revisiting $k$-tuple dominating sets with emphasis on small values of $k$

For any graph $G$ of order $n$ with degree sequence $d_{1}\geq\cdots\geq d_{n}$, we define the double Slater number $s\ell_{\times2}(G)$ as the smallest integer $t$ such that $t+d_{1}+\cdots+d_{t-e}\geq2n-p$ in which $e$ and $p$ are the number of end-vertices and penultimate vertices of $G$, respectively. We show that $γ_{\times2}(G)\geq s\ell_{\times2}(G)$, where $γ_{\times2}(G)$ is the well-known double domination number of a graph $G$ with no isolated vertices. We prove that the problem of deciding whether the equality holds for a given graph is NP-complete even when restricted to $4$-partite graphs. We also prove that the problem of computing $γ_{\times2}(G)$ in NP-hard even for comparability graphs of diameter two. Some results concerning these two parameters are given in this paper improving and generalizing some earlier results on double domination in graphs. We give an upper bound on the $k$-tuple domatic number of graphs with characterization of all graphs attaining the bound. Finally, we characterize the family of all full graphs, leading to a solution to an open problem given in a paper by Cockayne and Hedetniemi ($1977$).
Restrained condition on double Roman dominating functions
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We continue the study of restrained double Roman domination in graphs. For a graph $G=\big{(}V(G),E(G)\big{)}$, a double Roman dominating function $f$ is called a restrained double Roman dominating function (RDRD function) if the subgraph induced by $\{v\in V(G)\mid f(v)=0\}$ has no isolated vertices. The restrained double Roman domination number (RDRD number) $γ_{rdR}(G)$ is the minimum weight $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$ taken over all RDRD functions of $G$. We first prove that the problem of computing $γ_{rdR}$ is NP-hard even for planar graphs, but it is solvable in linear time when restricted to bounded clique-width graphs such as trees, cographs and distance-hereditary graphs. Relationships between $γ_{rdR}$ and some well-known parameters such as restrained domination number $γ_{r}$, domination number $γ$ and restrained Roman domination number $γ_{rR}$ are investigated in this paper by bounding $γ_{rdR}$ from below and above involving $γ_{r}$, $γ$ and $γ_{rR}$ for general graphs, respectively. We prove that $γ_{rdR}(T)\geq n+2$ for any tree $T\neq K_{1,n-1}$ of order $n\geq2$ and characterize the family of all trees attaining the lower bound. The characterization of graphs with small RDRD numbers is given in this paper.

Injective coloring of graphs revisited
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
An open packing in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices in $G$ such that no two vertices in $S$ have a common neighbor in $G$. The injective chromatic number $χ_i(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of colors assigned to vertices of $G$ such that each color class is an open packing. Alternatively, the injective chromatic number of $G$ is the chromatic number of the two-step graph of $G$, which is the graph with the same vertex set as $G$ in which two vertices are adjacent if they have a common neighbor. The concept of injective coloring has been studied by many authors, while in the present paper we approach it from two novel perspectives, related to open packings and the two-step graph operation. We prove several general bounds on the injective chromatic number expressed in terms of the open packing number. In particular, we prove that $χ_{i}(G)\geq \frac{1}{2}+\sqrt{\frac{1}{4}+\frac{2m-n}{\opack}}$ holds for any connected graph $G$ of order $n\geq2$, size $m$, and the open packing number $\opack$, and characterize the class of graphs attaining the bound. Regarding the well-known bound $χ_i(G)\ge Δ(G)$, we describe the family of extremal graphs and prove that deciding when the equality holds (even for regular graphs) is NP-complete, solving an open problem from an earlier paper. Next, we consider the chromatic number of the two-step graph of a graph, and compare it with the clique number and the maximum degree of the graph. We present two large families of graphs in which $χ_i(G)$ equals the cardinality of a largest clique of the two-step graph of $G$. Finally, we consider classes of graphs that admit an injective coloring in which all color classes are maximal open packings. We give characterizations of three subclasses of these graphs among graphs with diameter $2$, and find a partial characterization of hypercubes with this property.
Restrained Italian domination in graphs

For a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$, an Italian dominating function (ID function) $f:V(G)\rightarrow\{0,1,2\}$ has the property that for every vertex $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$, either $v$ is adjacent to a vertex assigned $2$ under $f$ or $v$ is adjacent to least two vertices assigned $1$ under $f$. The weight of an ID function is $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$. The Italian domination number is the minimum weight taken over all ID functions of $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of a variant of ID functions. A restrained Italian dominating function (RID function) $f$ of $G$ is an ID function of $G$ for which the subgraph induced by $\{v\in V(G)\mid f(v)=0\}$ has no isolated vertices, and the restrained Italian domination number $γ_{rI}(G)$ is the minimum weight taken over all RID functions of $G$. We first prove that the problem of computing this parameter is NP-hard, even when restricted to bipartite graphs and chordal graphs as well as planar graphs with maximum degree five. We prove that $γ_{rI}(T)$ for a tree $T$ of order $n\geq3$ different from the double star $S_{2,2}$ can be bounded from below by $(n+3)/2$. Moreover, all extremal trees for this lower bound are characterized in this paper. We also give some sharp bounds on this parameter for general graphs and give the characterizations of graphs $G$ with small or large $γ_{rI}(G)$.
Covering Italian domination in graphs

For a graph $G=(V(G),E(G))$, an Italian dominating function (ID function) of $G$ is a function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ such that for each vertex $v\in V(G)$ with $f(v)=0$, $f(N(v))\geq2$, that is, either there is a vertex $u \in N(v)$ with $f (u) = 2$ or there are two vertices $x,y\in N(v)$ with $f(x)=f(y)=1$. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ is a covering Italian dominating function (CID function) of $G$ if $f$ is an ID function and $\{v\in V(G)\mid f(v)\neq0\}$ is a vertex cover set. The covering Italian domination number (CID number) $γ_{cI}(G)$ is the minimum weight taken over all CID functions of $G$. In this paper, we study the CID number in graphs. We show that the problem of computing this parameter is NP-hard even when restricted to some well-known families of graphs, and find some bounds on this parameter. We characterize the family of graphs for which their CID numbers attain the upper bound twice their vertex cover number as well as all claw-free graphs whose CID numbers attain the lower bound half of their orders. We also give the characterizations of some families of graphs with small or large CID numbers.

Double domination and total $2$-domination in digraphs and their dual problems

A subset $S$ of vertices of a digraph $D$ is a double dominating set (total $2$-dominating set) if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent from at least two vertices in $S$, and every vertex in $S$ is adjacent from at least one vertex in $S$ (the subdigraph induced by $S$ has no isolated vertices). The double domination number (total $2$-domination number) of a digraph $D$ is the minimum cardinality of a double dominating set (total $2$-dominating set) in $D$. In this work, we investigate these concepts which can be considered as two extensions of double domination in graphs to digraphs, along with the concepts $2$-limited packing and total $2$-limited packing which have close relationships with the above-mentioned concepts.

Global offensive $k$-alliances in digraphs
Published in Bulletin of the ICA, 2023 • Search Publication
In this paper, we initiate the study of global offensive $k$-alliances in digraphs. Given a digraph $D=(V(D),A(D))$, a global offensive $k$-alliance in a digraph $D$ is a subset $S\subseteq V(D)$ such that every vertex outside of $S$ has at least one in-neighbor from $S$ and also at least $k$ more in-neighbors from $S$ than from outside of $S$, by assuming $k$ is an integer lying between two minus the maximum in-degree of $D$ and the maximum in-degree of $D$. The global offensive $k$-alliance number $γ_{k}^{o}(D)$ is the minimum cardinality among all global offensive $k$-alliances in $D$. In this article we begin the study of the global offensive $k$-alliance number of digraphs. For instance, we prove that finding the global offensive $k$-alliance number of digraphs $D$ is an NP-hard problem for any value $k\in \{2-Δ^-(D),\dots,Δ^-(D)\}$ and that it remains NP-complete even when restricted to bipartite digraphs when we consider the non-negative values of $k$ given in the interval above. Based on these facts, lower bounds on $γ_{k}^{o}(D)$ with characterizations of all digraphs attaining the bounds are given in this work. We also bound this parameter for bipartite digraphs from above. For the particular case $k=1$, an immediate result from the definition shows that $γ(D)\leq γ_{1}^{o}(D)$ for all digraphs $D$, in which $γ(D)$ stands for the domination number of $D$. We show that these two digraph parameters are the same for some infinite families of digraphs like rooted trees and contrafunctional digraphs. Moreover, we show that the difference between $γ_{1}^{o}(D)$ and $γ(D)$ can be arbitrary large for directed trees and connected functional digraphs.
(Open) packing number of some graph products

The packing number of a graph $G$ is the maximum number of closed neighborhoods of vertices in $G$ with pairwise empty intersections. Similarly, the open packing number of $G$ is the maximum number of open neighborhoods in $G$ with pairwise empty intersections. We consider the packing and open packing numbers on graph products. In particular we give a complete solution with respect to some properties of factors in the case of lexicographic and rooted products. For Cartesian, strong and direct products, we present several lower and upper bounds on these parameters.
On three outer-independent domination related parameters in graphs

Let $G$ be a graph and let $S\subseteq V(G)$. The set $S$ is a double outer-independent dominating set of $G$ if $|N[v]\cap D|\geq2$, for all $v\in V(G)$, and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Similarly, $S$ is a $2$-outer-independent dominating set, if every vertex from $V(G)\setminus S$ has at least two neighbors in $S$ and $V(G)\setminus S$ is independent. Finally, $S$ is a total outer-independent dominating set if every vertex from $V(G)$ has a neighbor in $S$ and the complement of $S$ is an independent set. The double, total or $2$-outer-independent domination number of $G$ is the smallest possible cardinality of any double, total or $2$-outer-independent dominating set of $G$, respectively. In this paper, the $2$-outer-independent, the total outer-independent and the double outer-independent domination numbers of graphs are investigated. We prove some Nordhaus-Gaddum type inequalities, derive their computational complexity and present several bounds for them.
