A vertex coloring $φ$ of a graph $G$ is $p$-centered if for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$ either $φ$ uses more than $p$ colors on $H$ or there is a color that appears exactly once on $H$. Centered colorings form one of the families of parameters that allow to capture notions of sparsity of graphs: A class of graphs has bounded expansion if and only if there is a function $f$ such that for every $p\geq1$, every graph in the class admits a $p$-centered coloring using at most $f(p)$ colors.
In this paper, we give upper bounds for the maximum number of colors needed in a $p$-centered coloring of graphs from several widely studied graph classes. We show that: (1) planar graphs admit $p$-centered colorings with $\mathcal{O}(p^3\log p)$ colors where the previous bound was $\mathcal{O}(p^{19})$; (2) bounded degree graphs admit $p$-centered colorings with $\mathcal{O}(p)$ colors while it was conjectured that they may require exponential number of colors in $p$; (3) graphs avoiding a fixed graph as a topological minor admit $p$-centered colorings with a polynomial in $p$ number of colors. All these upper bounds imply polynomial algorithms for computing the colorings. Prior to this work there were no non-trivial lower bounds known. We show that: (4) there are graphs of treewidth $t$ that require $\binom{p+t}{t}$ colors in any $p$-centered coloring and this bound matches the upper bound; (5) there are planar graphs that require $Ω(p^2\log p)$ colors in any $p$-centered coloring.

Optical orthogonal signature pattern codes (OOSPCs) have attracted wide attention as signature patterns of spatial optical code division multiple access networks. In this paper, an improved upper bound on the size of an $(m,n,3,λ_a,1)$-OOSPC with $λ_a=2,3$ is established. The exact number of codewords of an optimal $(m,n,3,λ_a,1)$-OOSPC is determined for any positive integers $m,n\equiv2\ ({\rm mod }\ 4)$ and $λ_a\in\{2,3\}$.

Let $ψ:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{R}_{\ge0}$ be an arbitrary function from the positive integers to the non-negative reals. Consider the set $\mathcal{A}$ of real numbers $α$ for which there are infinitely many reduced fractions $a/q$ such that $|α-a/q|\le ψ(q)/q$. If $\sum_{q=1}^\infty ψ(q)φ(q)/q=\infty$, we show that $\mathcal{A}$ has full Lebesgue measure. This answers a question of Duffin and Schaeffer. As a corollary, we also establish a conjecture due to Catlin regarding non-reduced solutions to the inequality $|α- a/q|\le ψ(q)/q$, giving a refinement of Khinchin's Theorem.
Minimal linear codes arising from blocking sets

Minimal linear codes are algebraic objects which gained interest in the last twenty years, due to their link with Massey's secret sharing schemes. In this context, Ashikhmin and Barg provided a useful and a quite easy to handle sufficient condition for a linear code to be minimal, which has been applied in the construction of many minimal linear codes. In this paper, we generalize some recent constructions of minimal linear codes which are not based on Ashikhmin-Barg's condition. More combinatorial and geometric methods are involved in our proofs. In particular, we present a family of codes arising from particular blocking sets, which are well-studied combinatorial objects. In this context, we will need to define cutting blocking sets and to prove some of their relations with other notions in blocking sets' theory. At the end of the paper, we provide one explicit family of cutting blocking sets and related minimal linear codes, showing that infinitely many of its members do not satisfy the Ashikhmin-Barg's condition.

We consider some combinatorial problems on matrix polynomials over finite fields. Using results from control theory we give a proof of a result of Helmke, Jordan and Lieb on the number of linear unimodular matrix polynomials over a finite field. As an application of our results we give a new proof of a theorem of Chen and Tseng which answers a question of Niederreiter on splitting subspaces. We use our results to affirmatively resolve a conjecture on the probability that a matrix polynomial is unimodular.
Smoothed Analysis of Order Types
Consider an ordered point set $P = (p_1,\ldots,p_n)$, its order type (denoted by $χ_P$) is a map which assigns to every triple of points a value in $\{+,-,0\}$ based on whether the points are collinear(0), oriented clockwise(-) or counter-clockwise(+). An abstract order type is a map $χ: \left[\substack{n\\3}\right] \rightarrow \{+,-,0\}$ (where $\left[\substack{n\\3}\right]$ is the collection of all triples of a set of $n$ elements) that satisfies the following condition: for every set of five elements $S\subset [n]$ its induced order type $χ_{|S}$ is realizable by a point set. To be precise, a point set $P$ realizes an order type $χ$,if $χ_P(p_i,p_j,p_k) = χ(i,j,k)$, for all $i<j<k$. Planar point sets are among the most basic and natural geometric objects of study in Discrete and Computational Geometry. Properties of point sets are relevant in theory and practice alike. It is known, that deciding if an abstract order type is realizable is complete for the existential theory of the reals. Our results show that order type realizability is much easier for realistic instances than in the worst case. In particular, we can recognize instances in "expected \NP-time". This is one of the first $\exists\mathbb{R}$-complete problems analyzed under the lens of Smoothed Analysis.
About Fibonacci trees. II -- generalized Fibonacci trees
In this second paper, we look at the following question: are the properties of the trees associated to the tilings $\{p,4\}$ and $\{p$+$2,3\}$ of the hyperbolic plane still true if we consider a finitely generated tree by the same rules but rooted at a black node? The direct answer is no, but new properties arise, no more complex than in the case of a tree rooted at a white node, and worth of interest. The present paper is an extension of the previous paper: arXiv:1904.12135.

We develop a definition of Ricci curvature on directed hypergraphs and explore the consequences of that definition. The definition generalizes Ollivier's definition for graphs. It involves a carefully designed optimal transport problem between sets of vertices.
Fractional Revival and Association Schemes

Fractional revival occurs between two vertices in a graph if a continuous-time quantum walk unitarily maps the characteristic vector of one vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of the two vertices. This phenomenon is relevant in quantum information in particular for entanglement generation in spin networks. We study fractional revival in graphs whose adjacency matrices belong to the Bose-Mesner algebra of association schemes. A specific focus is a characterization of balanced fractional revival (which corresponds to maximal entanglement) in graphs that belong to the Hamming scheme. Our proofs exploit the intimate connections between algebraic combinatorics and orthogonal polynomials.
The least signless Laplacian eigenvalue of the complements of bicyclic graphs
Suppose that $G$ is a connected simple graph with the vertex set $V(G)=\{v_1, v_2,\cdots,v_n\}$. Then the adjacency matrix of $G$ is $A(G)=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$, where $a_{ij}=1$ if $v_i$ is adjacent to $v_j$, and otherwise $a_{ij}=0$. The degree matrix $D(G)=diag(d_{G}(v_1), d_{G}(v_2), \dots, d_{G}(v_n)),$ where $d_{G}(v_i)$ denotes the degree of $v_i$ in the graph $G$ ($1\leq i\leq n$). The matrix $Q(G)=D(G)+A(G)$ is called the signless Laplacian matrix of $G$. The least eigenvalue of $Q(G)$ is also called the least signless Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. In this paper we give two graft transformations and then use them to characterize the unique connected graph whose least signless Laplacian eigenvalue is minimum among the complements of all bicyclic graphs.

We give simple proofs of Hecke-Rogers indefinite binary theta series identities for the two Ramanujan fifth order mock theta functions $χ_0(q)$ and $χ_1(q)$ and all three of Ramanujan's seventh order mock theta functions. We find that the coefficients of the three mock theta functions of order 7 are surprisingly related.
The random strategy in Maker-Breaker graph minor games
In a $(1:b)$ biased Maker-Breaker game, how good a strategy is for a player can be measured by the bias range for which its rival can win, choosing an appropriate counterstrategy. Bednarska and Łuczak proved that, in the $H$-subgraph game, the uniformly random strategy for Maker is essentially optimal with high probability. Here we prove an analogous result for the $H$-graph minor game, and we study for which choices of $H$ the random strategy is within a factor of $1+o(1)$ of being optimal.
On strong Skolem starters
In this note we present an alternative (simple) construction of cardioidal starters (strong and Skolem) for $\mathbb{Z}_{q^n}$, where $q\equiv3$ (mod 8) is an odd prime number and $n\geq1$ is an integer number; also for $\mathbb{Z}_{pq}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{p^n}$, for infinitely many odd primes $p,q\equiv1$ (mod 8) and $n\geq1$ an integer number. This cardioidal starters can be obtained by a more general result given by Ogandzhanyants et al. [O. Ogandzhanyants, M. Kondratieva and N. Shalaby, \emph{Strong Skolem starters}, J. Combin. Des. {\bf 27} (2018), no. 1, 5--21].

In this paper, we study the characters of homogeneous monotonic P-polynomial table algebras with finite dimension d>=5. We then apply them to association schemes. To this end, we develop some methods using tridiagonal matrices and Z-transform. Moreover, we calculate the eigenvalues of a special tridiagonal matrix which is found through the first intersection matrix of P-polynomial table algebras.
Minimum k-critical bipartite graphs

We study the problem of Minimum $k$-Critical Bipartite Graph of order $(n,m)$ - M$k$CBG-$(n,m)$: to find a bipartite $G=(U,V;E)$, with $|U|=n$, $|V|=m$, and $n>m>1$, which is $k$-critical bipartite, and the tuple $(|E|, Δ_U, Δ_V)$, where $Δ_U$ and $Δ_V$ denote the maximum degree in $U$ and $V$, respectively, is lexicographically minimum over all such graphs. $G$ is $k$-critical bipartite if deleting at most $k=n-m$ vertices from $U$ creates $G'$ that has a complete matching, i.e., a matching of size $m$. We show that, if $m(n-m+1)/n$ is an integer, then a solution of the M$k$CBG-$(n,m)$ problem can be found among $(a,b)$-regular bipartite graphs of order $(n,m)$, with $a=m(n-m+1)/n$, and $b=n-m+1$. If $a=m-1$, then all $(a,b)$-regular bipartite graphs of order $(n,m)$ are $k$-critical bipartite. For $a<m-1$, it is not the case. We characterize the values of $n$, $m$, $a$, and $b$ that admit an $(a,b)$-regular bipartite graph of order $(n,m)$, with $b=n-m+1$, and give a simple construction that creates such a $k$-critical bipartite graph whenever possible. Our techniques are based on Hall's marriage theorem, elementary number theory, linear Diophantine equations, properties of integer functions and congruences, and equations involving them.

The Almost-Disjoint 2-Path Decomposition Problem
We consider the problem of decomposing a given (di)graph into paths of length 2 with the additional restriction that no two such paths may have more than one vertex in common. We establish its NP-hardness by a reduction from 3-SAT, characterize (di)graph classes for which the problem can be be reduced to the Stable-set problem on claw-free graphs and describe a dynamic program for solving it for series-parallel digraphs.

We study the special value $u=1$ of Artin-Ihara $L$-functions associated to characters of the automorphism group of abelian covers of multigraphs. In particular, we show an annihilation statement analogous to a classical conjecture of Brumer on annihilation of class groups for abelian extensions of number fields and we also calculate the index of an ideal analogous to the classical Stickelberger ideal in algebraic number theory. Along the way, we make some observations about the number of spanning trees in abelian multigraph coverings that may be of independent interest.
Degenerate Turán densities of sparse hypergraphs

For fixed integers $r>k\ge 2,e\ge 3$, let $f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)$ be the maximum number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph in which the union of any $e$ distinct edges contains at least $er-(e-1)k+1$ vertices. A classical result of Brown, Erdős and Sós in 1973 showed that $f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)=Θ(n^k).$ The degenerate Turán density is defined to be the limit (if it exists) $$π(r,k,e):=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,er-(e-1)k,e)}{n^k}.$$ Extending a recent result of Glock for the special case of $r=3,k=2,e=3$, we show that $$π(r,2,3):=\lim_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,3r-4,3)}{n^2}=\frac{1}{r^2-r-1}$$ for arbitrary fixed $r\ge 4$. For the more general cases $r>k\ge 3$, we show that $$\frac{1}{r^k-r}\le\liminf_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,3r-2k,3)}{n^k}\le\limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty}\frac{f_r(n,3r-2k,3)}{n^k}\le \frac{1}{k!\binom{r}{k}-\frac{k!}{2}}.$$
The main difficulties in proving these results are the constructions establishing the lower bounds. The first construction is recursive and purely combinatorial, and is based on a (carefully designed) approximate induced decomposition of the complete graph, whereas the second construction is algebraic, and is proved by a newly defined matrix property which we call {\it strongly 3-perfect hashing}.
Independent Sets in n-vertex k-chromatic, \ell-connected graphs
We study the problem of maximizing the number of independent sets in $n$-vertex $k$-chromatic $\ell$-connected graphs. First we consider maximizing the total number of independent sets in such graphs with $n$ sufficiently large, and for this problem we use a stability argument to find the unique extremal graph. We show that our result holds within the larger family of $n$-vertex $k$-chromatic graphs with minimum degree at least $\ell$, again for $n$ sufficiently large. We also maximize the number of independent sets of each fixed size in $n$-vertex 3-chromatic 2-connected graphs. We finally address maximizing the number of independent sets of size 2 (equivalently, minimizing the number of edges) over all $n$-vertex $k$-chromatic $\ell$-connected graphs.
