Combinatorial t-designs from quadratic functions

Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $2$-designs as special cases. Furthermore, we confirmed Conjecture $3$ in Ding and Tang (arXiv: 1903.07375, 2019).
A new bound for the crossing number of wrapped butterflies
We fix an error in the bound obtained in [13] for the crossing number of wrapped butterflies. The new bound finer than the one provided earlier.

Thickenings of a metric space capture local geometric properties of the space. Here we exhibit applications of lower bounding the topology of thickenings of the circle and more generally the sphere. We explain interconnections with the geometry of circle actions on Euclidean space, the structure of zeros of trigonometric polynomials, and theorems of Borsuk-Ulam type. We use the combinatorial and geometric structure of the convex hull of orbits of circle actions on Euclidean space to give geometric proofs of the homotopy type of metric thickenings of the circle.
Homotopical connectivity bounds of thickenings of the sphere allow us to prove that a weighted average of function values of odd maps $S^n \to \mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ on a small diameter set is zero. We prove an additional generalization of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem for odd maps $S^{2n-1} \to \mathbb{R}^{2kn+2n-1}$. We prove such results for odd maps from the circle to any Euclidean space with optimal quantitative bounds. This in turn implies that any raked homogeneous trigonometric polynomial has a zero on a subset of the circle of a specific diameter; these results are optimal.

This paper solves the combinatorics relating the intersection theory of $ψ$-classes of Hassett spaces to that of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$. A generating function for intersection numbers of $ψ$ classes on all Hassett spaces is obtained from the Gromov-Witten potential of a point via a non-invertible transformation of variables. When restricting to diagonal weights, the changes of variables are invertible and explicitly described as polynomial functions. Finally, the comparison of potentials is extended to the level of cycles: the pinwheel cycle potential, a generating function for tautological classes of rational tail type on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is the right instrument to describe the pull-back to $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of all monomials of $ψ$ classes on Hassett spaces.

Let $f$ be a nonnegative integer valued function on the vertex set of a graph. A graph is \textbf{strictly $f$-degenerate} if each nonempty subgraph $Γ$ has a vertex $v$ such that $\mathrm{deg}_Γ(v) < f(v)$. In this paper, we define a new concept, strictly $f$-degenerate transversal, which generalizes list coloring, signed coloring, DP-coloring, $L$-forested-coloring, and $(f_{1}, f_{2}, \dots, f_{s})$-partition. A \textbf{cover} of a graph $G$ is a graph $H$ with vertex set $V(H) = \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} X_{v}$, where $X_{v} = \{(v, 1), (v, 2), \dots, (v, s)\}$; the edge set $\mathscr{M} = \bigcup_{uv \in E(G)}\mathscr{M}_{uv}$, where $\mathscr{M}_{uv}$ is a matching between $X_{u}$ and $X_{v}$. A vertex set $R \subseteq V(H)$ is a \textbf{transversal} of $H$ if $|R \cap X_{v}| = 1$ for each $v \in V(G)$. A transversal $R$ is a \textbf{strictly $f$-degenerate transversal} if $H[R]$ is strictly $f$-degenerate. The main result of this paper is a degree type result, which generalizes Brooks' theorem, Gallai's theorem, degree-choosable result, signed degree-colorable result, and DP-degree-colorable result. We also give some structural results on critical graphs with respect to strictly $f$-degenerate transversal. Using these results, we can uniformly prove many new and known results. In the final section, we pose some open problems.

DP-coloring was introduced by Dvořák and Postle as a generalization of list coloring and signed coloring. A new coloring, strictly $f$-degenerate transversal, is a further generalization of DP-coloring and $L$-forested-coloring. In this paper, we present some structural results on planar and toroidal graphs with forbidden configurations, and establish some sufficient conditions for the existence of strictly $f$-degenerate transversal based on these structural results. Consequently, (i) every toroidal graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig.2 is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$, (ii) every toroidal graph without $4$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$, (iii) every planar graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig.3 is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$. These results improve upon previous results on DP-$4$-coloring [Discrete Math. 341~(7) (2018) 1983--1986; Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc. 43~(3) (2020) 2271--2285] and (list) vertex arboricity [Discrete Math. 333 (2014) 101--105; Int. J. Math. Stat. 16~(1) (2015) 97--105; Iranian Math. Soc. 42~(5) (2016) 1293--1303].

In this paper we obtain the automorphism groups of the token graphs of some graphs. In particular we obtain the automorphism group of the $k$-token graph of the path graph $P_n$, for $n\neq 2k$. Also, we obtain the automorphism group of the $2$-token graph of the following graphs: cycle, star, fan and wheel graphs.

We investigate the combinatorial structure of subspaces of the exterior algebra of a finite-dimensional real vector space, working in parallel with the extremal combinatorics of hypergraphs. Using initial monomials, projections of the underlying vector space onto subspaces, and the interior product, we find analogues of local and global LYM inequalities, the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, and the Ahlswede-Khachatrian bound for $t$-intersecting hypergraphs.
Using these tools, we prove a new extension of the Two Families Theorem of Bollobás, giving a weighted bound for subspace configurations satisfying a skew cross-intersection condition. We also verify a recent conjecture of Gerbner, Keszegh, Methuku, Abhishek, Nagy, Patkós, Tompkins, and Xiao on pairs of set systems satisfying both an intersection and a cross-intersection condition.

In 1995, Jockusch constructed an infinite family of centrally symmetric $3$-dimensional simplicial spheres that are cs-$2$-neighborly. Here we generalize his construction and show that for all $d\geq 3$ and $n\geq d+1$, there exists a centrally symmetric $d$-dimensional simplicial sphere with $2n$ vertices that is cs-$\lceil d/2\rceil$-neighborly. This result combined with work of Adin and Stanley completely resolves the upper bound problem for centrally symmetric simplicial spheres.
On induced saturation for paths

For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not contain an induced copy of $H$, but either removing an edge from $G$ or adding a non-edge to $G$ creates an induced copy of $H$. Depending on the graph $H$, an $H$-induced-saturated graph does not necessarily exist. In fact, Martin and Smith (2012) showed that $P_4$-induced-saturated graphs do not exist, where $P_k$ denotes a path on $k$ vertices. Axenovich and Csikós (2019) asked the existence of $P_k$-induced-saturated graphs for $k \ge 5$; it is easy to construct such graphs when $k\in\{2, 3\}$. Recently, Räty constructed a graph that is $P_6$-induced-saturated. In this paper, we show that there exists a $P_{k}$-induced-saturated graph for infinitely many values of $k$. To be precise, we find a $P_{3n}$-induced-saturated graph for every positive integer $n$. As a consequence, for each positive integer $n$, we construct infinitely many $P_{3n}$-induced-saturated graphs. We also show that the Kneser graph $K(n,2)$ is $P_6$-induced-saturated for every $n\ge 5$.
Quadratic Algebras arising from Hopf operads generated by a single element

The operads of Poisson and Gerstenhaber algebras are generated by a single binary element if we consider them as Hopf operads (i.e. as operads in the category of cocommutative coalgebras). In this note we discuss in details the Hopf operads generated by a single element of arbitrary arity. We explain why the dual space to the space of $n$-ary operations in this operads are quadratic and Koszul algebras. We give the detailed description of generators, relations and a certain monomial basis in these algebras.
Optimally Perturbed Identity Matrices of Rank 2
The problem of optimal antipodal codes can be framed as finding low rank Gram matrices $G$ with $G_{ii} = 1$ and $|G_{ij}| \leq ε$ for $1 \leq i \neq j \leq n$. In 2018, Bukh and Cox introduced a new bounding technique by removing the condition that $G$ be a gram matrix. In this work, we investigate how tight this relaxation is, and find exact results for real valued matrices of rank $2$.

We describe the non-backtracking spectrum of a stochastic block model with connection probabilities $p_{\mathrm{in}}, p_{\mathrm{out}} = ω(\log n)/n$. In this regime we answer a question posed in Dall'Amico and al. (2019) regarding the existence of a real eigenvalue `inside' the bulk, close to the location $\frac{p_{\mathrm{in}}+ p_{\mathrm{out}}}{p_{\mathrm{in}}- p_{\mathrm{out}}}$. We also introduce a variant of the Bauer-Fike theorem well suited for perturbations of quadratic eigenvalue problems, and which could be of independent interest.

It is a widely open problem to determine which monomials in the n-variable polynomial ring $K[x_1,...,x_n]$ over a field $K$ have the Gotzmann property, i.e. induce a Borel-stable Gotzmann monomial ideal. Since 2007, only the case $n \le 3$ was known. Here we solve the problem for the case $n = 4$. The solution involves a surprisingly intricate characterization.

We study infinite words fixed by a morphism and their derived words. A derived word is a coding of return words to a factor. We exhibit two examples of sets of morphisms which are closed under derivation --- any derived word with respect to any factor of the fixed point is again fixed by a morphism from this set. The first example involves standard episturmian morphisms, and the second concerns the period doubling morphism.
Characterization of $k$-spectrally monomorphic Hermitian matrices

This paper solves the following problem about Hermitian matrices related to the theory of $2$-structures:\emph{ }Let $n$ be a positive integer and $k$ be an integer with $k\in \{3,\ldots,n-3\}$. Characterize the Hermitian matrices $A$ such that the characteristic polynomials of the $k\times k$ submatrices of $A$ are all equal. Such matrices are called $k$-spectrally monomorphic. A crucial step to obtain this characterization is proving that if a matrix $A$ is $k$-spectrally monomorphic then it is $l$-spectrally monomorphic for $l$ in $\{1,\ldots,min\{k, n-k\}\}$.

Patterns in sets of positive density in trees and affine buildings
We prove an analogue for homogeneous trees and certain affine buildings of a result of Bourgain on pinned distances in sets of positive density in Euclidean spaces. Furthermore, we construct an example of a non-homogeneous tree with positive Hausdorff dimension, and a subset with positive density thereof, in which not all sufficiently large (even) distances are realised.
On a Generalization of the Marriage Problem
We present a generalization of the marriage problem underlying Hall's famous Marriage Theorem to what we call the Symmetric Marriage Problem, a problem that can be thought of as a special case of Maximal Weighted Bipartite Matching. We show that there is a solution to the Symmetric Marriage Problem if and only if a variation on Hall's Condition holds on each of the bipartitions. We prove both finite and infinite versions of this result and provide applications. We also introduce a non-bipartite version of the problem and show that a generalization of Tutte's Theorem applies.
Properties for the Frechet Mean in Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann Treespace

The Billera-Holmes-Vogtmann (BHV) space of weighted trees can be embedded in Euclidean space, but the extrinsic Euclidean mean often lies outside of treespace. Sturm showed that the intrinsic Frechet mean exists and is unique in treespace. This Frechet mean can be approximated with an iterative algorithm, but bounds on the convergence of the algorithm are not known, and there is no other known polynomial algorithm for computing the Frechet mean nor even the edges present in the mean. We give the first necessary and sufficient conditions for an edge to be in the Frechet mean. The conditions are in the form of inequalities on the weights of the edges. These conditions provide a pre-processing step for finding the treespace orthant containing the Frechet mean. This work generalizes to orthant spaces.
