A note on multiplicative automatic sequences
We prove that any $q$-automatic completely multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$ essentially coincides with a Dirichlet character. This answers a question of J. P. Allouche and L. Goldmakher and confirms a conjecture of J. Bell, N. Bruin and M. Coons for completely multiplicative functions. Further, assuming two standard conjectures in number theory, the methods allows for removing the assumption of completeness.

A characterization of maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs of transitive graphs
A transitive graph is 2-dimensional if it can be represented as the intersection of two linear orders. Such representations make answering of reachability queries trivial, and allow many problems that are NP-hard on arbitrary graphs to be solved in polynomial time. One may therefore be interested in finding 2-dimensional graphs that closely approximate a given graph of arbitrary order dimension. In this paper we show that the maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs of a transitive graph G are induced by the optimal near-transitive orientations of the complement of G. The same characterization holds for the maximal permutation subgraphs of a transitively orientable graph. We provide an algorithm that enables this problem reduction in near-linear time, and an approach for enlarging non-maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs, such as trees.

Extension-lifting Bijections for Oriented Matroids
Extending the notion of geometric bijections for regular matroids, introduced by the first and third author with Matthew Baker, we describe a family of bijections between bases of an oriented matroid and special orientations. These bijections are specified by a pair of circuit and cocircuit signatures coming respectively from a generic single-element lifting and extension. We then characterize generic single-element liftings and extensions using these bijections. We also explain the relation of our work with the works of Gioan--Las Vergnas and Ding. Some implications in oriented matroid programming and oriented matroid triangulations are also discussed.

Countable ordinals and big Ramsey degrees
In this paper we consider big Ramsey degrees of finite chains in countable ordinals. We prove that a countable ordinal has finite big Ramsey degrees if and only if it is smaller than $ω^ω$. Big Ramsey degrees of finite chains in all other countable ordinals are infinite.

2-neighborly 0/1-polytopes of dimension 7
We give a complete enumeration of all 2-neighborly 0/1-polytopes of dimension 7. There are 13 959 358 918 different 0/1-equivalence classes of such polytopes. They form 5 850 402 014 combinatorial classes and 1 274 089 different f-vectors. It enables us to list some of their combinatorial properties. In particular, we have found a 2-neighborly polytope with 14 vertices and 16 facets.

Infinite families of $2$-designs from a class of cyclic codes with two non-zeros
Combinatorial $t$-designs have wide applications in coding theory, cryptography, communications and statistics. It is well known that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code may give a $t$-design. In this paper, we first determine the weight distribution of a class of linear codes derived from the dual of extended cyclic code with two non-zeros. We then obtain infinite families of $2$-designs and explicitly compute their parameters from the supports of all the codewords with a fixed weight in the codes. By simple counting argument, we obtain exponentially many $2$-designs.

New Strongly Regular Graphs from Finite Geometries via Switching
We show that the strongly regular graph on non-isotropic points of one type of the polar spaces of type $U(n, 2)$, $O(n, 3)$, $O(n, 5)$, $O^+(n, 3)$, and $O^-(n, 3)$ are not determined by its parameters for $n \geq 6$. We prove this by using a variation of Godsil-McKay switching recently described by Wang, Qiu, and Hu. This also results in a new, shorter proof of a previous result of the first author which showed that the collinearity graph of a polar space is not determined by its spectrum. The same switching gives a linear algebra explanation for the construction of a large number of non-isomorphic designs.

The Fault-Tolerant Metric Dimension of Cographs
A vertex set $U \subseteq V$ of an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ is a \textit{resolving set} for $G$ if for every two distinct vertices $u,v \in V$ there is a vertex $w \in U$ such that the distance between $u$ and $w$ and the distance between $v$ and $w$ are different. A resolving set $U$ is {\em fault-tolerant} if for every vertex $u\in U$ set $U\setminus \{u\}$ is still a resolving set. {The \em (fault-tolerant) Metric Dimension} of $G$ is the size of a smallest (fault-tolerant) resolving set for $G$. The {\em weighted (fault-tolerant) Metric Dimension} for a given cost function $c: V \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}_+$ is the minimum weight of all (fault-tolerant) resolving sets. Deciding whether a given graph $G$ has (fault-tolerant) Metric Dimension at most $k$ for some integer $k$ is known to be NP-complete. The weighted fault-tolerant Metric Dimension problem has not been studied extensively so far. In this paper we show that the weighted fault-tolerant metric dimension problem can be solved in linear time on cographs.

Linear-Time and Efficient Distributed Algorithms for List Coloring Graphs on Surfaces
In 1994, Thomassen proved that every planar graph is 5-list-colorable. In 1995, Thomassen proved that every planar graph of girth at least five is 3-list-colorable. His proofs naturally lead to quadratic-time algorithms to find such colorings. Here, we provide the first such linear-time algorithms to find such colorings. For a fixed surface S, Thomassen showed in 1997 that there exists a linear-time algorithm to decide if a graph embedded in S is 5-colorable and similarly in 2003 if a graph of girth at least five embedded in S is 3-colorable. Using the theory of hyperbolic families, the author and Thomas showed such algorithms exist for list-colorings. Dvorak and Kawarabayashi actually gave an $O(n^{O(g+1)})$-time algorithm to find such colorings (if they exist) in n-vertex graphs where g is the Euler genus of the surface. Here we provide the first such algorithm whose exponent does not depend on the genus; indeed, we provide a linear-time algorithm. In 1988, Goldberg, Plotkin and Shannon provided a deterministic distributed algorithm for 7-coloring n-vertex planar graphs in $O(\log n)$ rounds. In 2018, Aboulker, Bonamy, Bousquet, and Esperet provided a deterministic distributed algorithm for 6-coloring n-vertex planar graphs in $O(\log^3 n)$ rounds. Their algorithm in fact works for 6-list-coloring. They also provided an $O(\log^3 n)$-round algorithm for 4-list-coloring triangle-free planar graphs. Chechik and Mukhtar independently obtained such algorithms for ordinary coloring in $O(\log n)$ rounds, which is best possible in terms of running time. Here we provide the first polylogarithmic deterministic distributed algorithms for 5-coloring n-vertex planar graphs and similarly for 3-coloring planar graphs of girth at least five. Indeed, these algorithms run in $O(\log n)$ rounds, work also for list-colorings, and even work on a fixed surface (assuming such a coloring exists).

From Co-prime to the Diophantine Equation Based Sparse Sensing
With a careful design of sample spacings either in temporal and spatial domain, co-prime sensing can reconstruct the autocorrelation at a significantly denser set of points based on Bazout theorem. However, still restricted from Bazout theorem, it is required O(M1 + M2) samples to estimate frequencies in the case of co-prime sampling, where M1 and M2 are co-prime down-sampling rates. Besides, for Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, the sensors can not be arbitrarily sparse in co-prime arrays. In this letter, we restrain our focus on complex waveforms and present a framework under multiple samplers/sensors for both frequency and DOA estimation based on Diophantine equation, which is essentially to estimate the autocorrelation with higher order statistics instead of the second order one. We prove that, given arbitrarily high down-sampling rates, there exist sampling schemes with samples to estimate autocorrelation only proportional to the sum of degrees of freedom (DOF) and the number of snapshots required. In the scenario of DOA estimation, we show there exist arrays of N sensors with O(N^3) DOF and O(N) minimal distance between sensors.

Rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers, Meijer $G$-functions and matrix integrals
Published in J. Math. Phys. 60, 103504 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
The quantum spectral curve equation associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type serving as generating functions for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers is solved by generalized hypergeometric series. The basis elements spanning the corresponding Sato Grassmannian element are shown to be Meijer $G$-functions, or their asymptotic series. Using their Mellin integral representation the $τ$-function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral.

A tree distinguishing polynomial
We define a bivariate polynomial for unlabeled rooted trees and show that the polynomial of an unlabeled rooted tree $T$ is the generating function of a class of subtrees of $T$. We prove that the polynomial is a complete isomorphism invariant for unlabeled rooted trees. Then, we generalize the polynomial to unlabeled unrooted trees and we show that the generalized polynomial is a complete isomorphism invariant for unlabeled unrooted trees.

A Generalization of Schur's $P$- and $Q$-Functions
Published in Sem. Lothar. Combin. 81 (2020), Art. B81k • Search Publication
We introduce and study a generalization of Schur's $P$-/$Q$-functions associated to a polynomial sequence, which can be viewed as ``Macdonald's ninth variation'' for $P$-/$Q$-functions. This variation includes as special cases Schur's $P$-/$Q$-functions, Ivanov's factorial $P$-/$Q$-functions and the $t=-1$ specialization of Hall--Littlewood functions associated to the classical root systems. We establish several identities and properties such as generalizations of Schur's original definition of Schur's $Q$-functions, Cauchy-type identity, Józefiak--Pragacz--Nimmo formula for skew $Q$-functions, and Pieri-type rule for multiplication.

On some properties of the number of permutations being products of pairwise disjoint $d$-cycles
Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer. In this paper we study arithmetic properties of the sequence $(H_d(n))_{n\in\N}$, where $H_{d}(n)$ is the number of permutations in $S_{n}$ being products of pairwise disjoint cycles of a fixed length $d$. In particular we deal with periodicity modulo a given positive integer, behaviour of the $p$-adic valuations and various divisibility properties. Moreover, we introduce some related families of polynomials and study they properties. Among many results we obtain qualitative description of the $p$-adic valuation of the number $H_{d}(n)$ extending in this way earlier results of Ochiai and Ishihara, Ochiai, Takegehara and Yoshida.

On $p$-adic valuations of certain $m$ colored $p$-ary partition functions
Let $k\in\N_{\geq 2}$ and for given $m\in\Z\setminus\{0\}$ consider the sequence $(S_{k,m}(n))_{n\in\N}$ defined by the power series expansion $$ \frac{1}{(1-x)^{m}}\prod_{i=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{(1-x^{k^{i}})^{m}}=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}S_{k,m}(n)x^{n}. $$ The number $S_{k,m}(n)$ for $m\in\N_{+}$ has a natural combinatorial interpretation: it counts the number of representations of $n$ as sums of powers of $k$, where the part equal to $1$ takes one among $mk$ colors and each part $>1$ takes $m(k-1)$ colors. We concentrate on the case when $k=p\in\mathbb{P}$. Our main result is the computation of the exact value of the $p$-adic valuation of $S_{p,m}(n)$. In particular, in each case the set of values of $ν_{p}(S_{p,m}(n))$ is finite and the maximum value is bounded by $\op{max}\{ν_{p}(m)+1,ν_{p}(m+1)+1\}$. Our results can be seen as a generalization of earlier work of Churchhouse and recent work of Gawron, Miska and Ulas, and the present authors.

$X$-Ramanujan Graphs
Let $X$ be an infinite graph of bounded degree; e.g., the Cayley graph of a free product of finite groups. If $G$ is a finite graph covered by $X$, it is said to be $X$-Ramanujan if its second-largest eigenvalue $λ_2(G)$ is at most the spectral radius $ρ(X)$ of $X$, and more generally $k$-quasi-$X$-Ramanujan if $λ_k(G)$ is at most $ρ(X)$. In case $X$ is the infinite $Δ$-regular tree, this reduces to the well known notion of a finite $Δ$-regular graph being Ramanujan. Inspired by the Interlacing Polynomials method of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava, we show the existence of infinitely many $k$-quasi-$X$-Ramanujan graphs for a variety of infinite $X$. In particular, $X$ need not be a tree; our analysis is applicable whenever $X$ is what we call an additive product graph. This additive product is a new construction of an infinite graph $\mathsf{AddProd}(A_1, \dots, A_c)$ from finite 'atom' graphs $A_1, \dots, A_c$ over a common vertex set. It generalizes the notion of the free product graph $A_1 * \cdots * A_c$ when the atoms $A_j$ are vertex-transitive, and it generalizes the notion of the universal covering tree when the atoms $A_j$ are single-edge graphs. Key to our analysis is a new graph polynomial $α(A_1, \dots, A_c;x)$ that we call the additive characteristic polynomial. It generalizes the well known matching polynomial $μ(G;x)$ in case the atoms $A_j$ are the single edges of $G$, and it generalizes the $r$-characteristic polynomial introduced in [Ravichandran'16, Leake-Ravichandran'18]. We show that $α(A_1, \dots, A_c;x)$ is real-rooted, and all of its roots have magnitude at most $ρ(\mathsf{AddProd}(A_1, \dots, A_c))$. This last fact is proven by generalizing Godsil's notion of treelike walks on a graph $G$ to a notion of freelike walks on a collection of atoms $A_1, \dots, A_c$.
Protection numbers in simply generated trees and Pólya trees
We determine the limit of the expected value and the variance of the protection number of the root in simply generated trees, in Pólya trees, and in unlabelled non-plane binary trees, when the number of vertices tends to infinity. Moreover, we compute expectation and variance of the protection number of a randomly chosen vertex in all those tree classes. We obtain exact formulas as sum representations, where the obtained sums are rapidly converging and therefore allowing an efficient numerical computation of high accuracy. Most proofs are based on a singularity analysis of generating functions.

From Ramanujan Graphs to Ramanujan Complexes
Published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, 378 (2020), no. 2163 • View Publication • BIB
Ramanujan graphs are graphs whose spectrum is bounded optimally. Such graphs have found numerous applications in combinatorics and computer science. In recent years, a high dimensional theory has emerged. In this paper these developments are surveyed. After explaining their connection to the Ramanujan conjecture we will present some old and new results with an emphasis on random walks on these discrete objects and on the Euclidean spheres. The latter lead to "golden gates" which are of importance in quantum computation.

On the upper embedding of symmetric configurations with block size 3
Published in Discrete Mathematics Volume 343, Issue 4, April 2020, 111774 • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of embedding a symmetric configuration with block size 3 in an orientable surface in such a way that the blocks of the configuration form triangular faces and there is only one extra large face. We develop a sufficient condition for such an embedding to exist given any orientation of the configuration, and show that this condition is satisfied for all configurations on up to 19 points. We also show that there exists a configuration on 21 points which is not embeddable in any orientation. As a by-product, we give a revised table of numbers of configurations, correcting the published figure for 19 points. We give a number of open questions about embeddability of configurations on larger numbers of points.

The asymptotics of the partition of the cube into Weyl simplices, and an encoding of a Bernoulli scheme
Published in Funct. Anal. and Appl.#2,v.53,2019 • View Publication • BIB
We suggest a combinatorial method of encoding continuous symbolic dynamical systems. A~continuous phase space, the infinite-dimensional cube, turns into the path space of a tree, and the shift is mapped to a transformation which was called a "transfer." The central problem is that of distinguishability: does the encoding separate almost all points of the space? The main result says that the partition of the cube into Weyl simplices satisfies this property.\footnote{{\it Keywords:} combinatorial encoding, transfer, Bernoulli scheme, graded graph.
