A structure theorem for almost low-degree functions on the slice
The Fourier-Walsh expansion of a Boolean function $f \colon \{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}$ is its unique representation as a multilinear polynomial. The Kindler-Safra theorem (2002) asserts that if in the expansion of $f$, the total weight on coefficients beyond degree $k$ is very small, then $f$ can be approximated by a Boolean-valued function depending on at most $O(2^k)$ variables. In this paper we prove a similar theorem for Boolean functions whose domain is the `slice' ${{[n]}\choose{pn}} = \{x \in \{0,1\}^n\colon \sum_i x_i = pn\}$, where $0 \ll p \ll 1$, with respect to their unique representation as harmonic multilinear polynomials. We show that if in the representation of $f\colon {{[n]}\choose{pn}} \rightarrow \{0,1\}$, the total weight beyond degree $k$ is at most $ε$, where $ε= \min(p, 1-p)^{O(k)}$, then $f$ can be $O(ε)$-approximated by a degree-$k$ Boolean function on the slice, which in turn depends on $O(2^{k})$ coordinates. This proves a conjecture of Filmus, Kindler, Mossel, and Wimmer (2015). Our proof relies on hypercontractivity, along with a novel kind of a shifting procedure. In addition, we show that the approximation rate in the Kindler-Safra theorem can be improved from $ε+ \exp(O(k)) ε^{1/4}$ to $ε+ε^2 (2\ln(1/ε))^k/k!$, which is tight in terms of the dependence on $ε$ and misses at most a factor of $2^{O(k)}$ in the lower-order term.

New Lower Bounds for Permutation Codes using Linear Block Codes
In this paper we prove new lower bounds for the maximal size of permutation codes by connecting the theory of permutation codes with the theory of linear block codes. More specifically, using the columns of a parity check matrix of an $[n,k,d]_q$ linear block code, we are able to prove the existence of a permutation code in the symmetric group of degree $n$, having minimum distance at least $d$ and large cardinality. With our technique, we obtain new lower bounds for permutation codes that enhance the ones in the literature and provide asymptotic improvements in certain regimes of length and distance of the permutation code.

A Sublinear Bound on the Cop Throttling Number of a Graph
We provide a sublinear bound on the cop throttling number of a connected graph. Related to the graph searching game Cops and Robbers, the cop throttling number, written $\mathrm{th}_c(G)$, is given by $\mathrm{th}_c(G)=\min_k\{k+\mathrm{capt}_k(G)\}$, in which $\mathrm{capt}_k(G)$ is the $k$-capture time, or the length of a game of Cops and Robbers with $k$ cops on the graph $G$, assuming both players play optimally. No general sublinear bound was known on the cop throttling number of a connected graph. Towards a question asked by Breen et al., we prove that $\mathrm{th}_c(G)\leq \frac{(2+o(1))n\sqrt{W(\log(n))}}{\sqrt{\log(n)}},$ where $W=W(x)$ is the Lambert W function.

No-three-in-line problem on a torus: periodicity
Let $τ_{m,n}$ denote the maximal number of points on the discrete torus (discrete toric grid) of sizes $m \times n$ with no three collinear points. The value $τ_{m,n}$ is known for the case where $\gcd(m,n)$ is prime. It is also known that $τ_{m,n} \leq 2\gcd(m,n)$. In this paper we generalize some of the known tools for determining $τ_{m,n}$ and also show some new. Using these tools we prove that the sequence $(τ_{z,n})_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ is periodic for all fixed $z > 1$. In general, we do not know the period; however, if $z = p^a$ for $p$ prime, then we can bound it. We prove that $τ_{p^a,p^{(a-1)p+2}} = 2p^a$ which implies that the period for the sequence is $p^b$ where $b$ is at most $(a-1)p+2$.

Finding a Mediocre Player
Consider a totally ordered set $S$ of $n$ elements; as an example, a set of tennis players and their rankings. Further assume that their ranking is a total order and thus satisfies transitivity and anti-symmetry. Following Frances Yao (1974), an element (player) is said to be $(i,j)$-\emph{mediocre} if it is neither among the top $i$ nor among the bottom $j$ elements of $S$. Finding a mediocre element is closely related to finding the median element. More than $40$ years ago, Yao suggested a very simple and elegant algorithm for finding an $(i,j)$-mediocre element: Pick $i+j+1$ elements arbitrarily and select the $(i+1)$-th largest among them. She also asked: "Is this the best algorithm?" No one seems to have found a better algorithm ever since. We first provide a deterministic algorithm that beats the worst-case comparison bound in Yao's algorithm for a large range of values of $i$ (and corresponding suitable $j=j(i)$) even if the current best selection algorithm is used. We then repeat the exercise for randomized algorithms; the average number of comparisons of our algorithm beats the average comparison bound in Yao's algorithm for another large range of values of $i$ (and corresponding suitable $j=j(i)$) even if the best selection algorithm is used; the improvement is most notable in the symmetric case $i=j$. Moreover, the tight bound obtained in the analysis of Yao's algorithm allows us to give a definite answer for this class of algorithms. In summary, we answer Yao's question as follows: (i)~"Presently not" for deterministic algorithms and (ii)~"Definitely not" for randomized algorithms. (In fairness, it should be said however that Yao posed the question in the context of deterministic algorithms.)

On the cover Ramsey number of Berge hypergraphs
For a fixed set of positive integers $R$, we say $\mathcal{H}$ is an $R$-uniform hypergraph, or $R$-graph, if the cardinality of each edge belongs to $R$. An $R$-graph $\mathcal{H}$ is \emph{covering} if every vertex pair of $\mathcal{H}$ is contained in some hyperedge. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a \textit{Berge}-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists an injection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. In this note, we define a new type of Ramsey number, namely the \emph{cover Ramsey number}, denoted as $\hat{R}^R(BG_1, BG_2)$, as the smallest integer $n_0$ such that for every covering $R$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n \geq n_0$ vertices and every $2$-edge-coloring (blue and red) of $\mathcal{H}$ , there is either a blue Berge-$G_1$ or a red Berge-$G_2$ subhypergraph. We show that for every $k\geq 2$, there exists some $c_k$ such that for any finite graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, $R(G_1, G_2) \leq \hat{R}^{[k]}(BG_1, BG_2) \leq c_k \cdot R(G_1, G_2)^3$. Moreover, we show that for each positive integer $d$ and $k$, there exists a constant $c = c(d,k)$ such that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $d$, then $\hat{R}^{[k]}(BG,BG) \leq cn$.

Peano partial cubes
Peano partial cubes are the bipartite graphs whose geodesic interval spaces are (closed) join spaces. They are the partial cubes all of whose finite convex subgraphs have a pre-hull number which is at most 1. Special Peano partial cubes are median graphs, cellular bipartite graphs and netlike partial cubes. Analogous properties of these graphs are satisfied by Peano partial cubes. In particular the convex hull of any isometric cycle of such a graph is a gated quasi-hypertori (i.e., the Cartesian product of copies of K_2 and even cycles). Moreover, for any Peano partial cubes G that contains no isometric rays, there exists a finite qasi-hypertorus which is fixed by all automorphisms of G, and any self-contraction of G fixes some finite quasi-hypertorus. A Peano partial cube G is called a hyper-median partial cube if any triple of vertices of has either a median or a hyper-median, that is, a quasi-median whose convex-hull induces a hypertorus (i.e., the Cartesian product of even cycles such that at least one of them has length greater than 4). These graphs have several properties similar to that of median graphs. In particular a graph is a hyper-median partial cube if and only if all its finite convex subgraphs are obtained by successive gated amalgamations from finite quasi-hypertori. Also a finite graph is a hyper-median partial cube if and only if it can be obtained from K_1 by a sequence of special expansions. The class of Peano partial cubes and that of hyper-median partial cubes are closed under convex subgraphs, retracts, Cartesian products and gated amalgamations. We study two convex invariants: the Helly number of a Peano partial cube, and the depth of a hyper-median partial cube that contains no isometric rays. Finally, for a finite Peano partial cube G, we prove an Euler-type formula, and a similar formula giving the isometric dimension of G.

Eigenvectors of Z-tensors associated with least H-eigenvalue with application to hypergraphs
Unlike an irreducible $Z$-matrices, a weakly irreducible $Z$-tensor $\mathcal{A}$ can have more than one eigenvector associated with the least H-eigenvalue. We show that there are finitely many eigenvectors of $\mathcal{A}$ associated with the least H-eigenvalue. If $\mathcal{A}$ is further combinatorial symmetric, the number of such eigenvectors can be obtained explicitly by the Smith normal form of the incidence matrix of $\mathcal{A}$. When applying to a connected uniform hypergraph $G$, we prove that the number of Laplacian eigenvectors of $G$ associated with the zero eigenvalue is equal to the the number of adjacency eigenvectors of $G$ associated with the spectral radius, which is also equal to the number of signless Laplacian eigenvectors of $G$ associated with the zero eigenvalue if zero is an signless Laplacian eigenvalue.

On an open problem about a class of optimal ternary cyclic codes
Cyclic codes are a subclass of linear codes and have applications in consumer electronics, data storage systems and communication systems as they have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, we settle an open problem about a class of optimal ternary cyclic codes which was proposed by Ding and Helleseth. Let $C_{(1,e)}$ be a cyclic code of length $3^m-1$ over GF(3) with two nonzeros $α$ and $α^e$, where $α$ is a generator of $GF(3^m)^*$ and e is a given integer. It is shown that $C_{(1,e)}$ is optimal with parameters $[3^m-1,3^m-1-2m,4]$ if one of the following conditions is met. 1) $m\equiv0(\mathrm{mod}~ 4)$, $m\geq 4$, and $e=3^\frac{m}{2}+5$. 2) $m\equiv2(\mathrm{mod}~ 4)$, $m\geq 6$, and $e=3^\frac{m+2}{2}+5$.

Strong conflict-free connection of graphs
A path $P$ in an edge-colored graph is called \emph{a conflict-free path} if there exists a color used on only one of the edges of $P$. An edge-colored graph $G$ is called \emph{conflict-free connected} if for each pair of distinct vertices of $G$ there is a conflict-free path in $G$ connecting them. The graph $G$ is called \emph{strongly conflict-free connected }if for every pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$ there exists a conflict-free path of length $d_G(u,v)$ in $G$ connecting them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{strong conflict-free connection number} of $G$, denoted by $\mathit{scfc}(G)$, is defined as the smallest number of colors that are required in order to make $G$ strongly conflict-free connected. In this paper, we first show that if $G_t$ is a connected graph with $m$ $(m\geq 2)$ edges and $t$ edge-disjoint triangles, then $\mathit{scfc}(G_t)\leq m-2t$, and the equality holds if and only if $G_t\cong S_{m,t}$. Then we characterize the graphs $G$ with $scfc(G)=k$ for $k\in \{1,m-3,m-2,m-1,m\}$. In the end, we present a complete characterization for the cubic graphs $G$ with $scfc(G)=2$.
Resonantly Equivalent Catacondensed Even Ring Systems
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 82 (2019) 625-638 • Search Publication
In this paper we generalize the binary coding procedure of perfect matchings from catacondensed benzenoid graphs to catacondensed even ring systems (also called cers). Next, we study cers with isomorphic resonance graphs. For this purpose, we define resonantly equivalent cers. Finally, we investigate cers whose resonance graphs are isomorphic to the resonance graphs of catacondensed benzenoid graphs. As a consequence we show that for each phenylene there exists a catacondensed benzenoid graph such that their resonance graphs are isomorphic.

The chromatic number of random Borsuk graphs
Published in Random Struct Alg. 2020; 56: 838-850 • View Publication • BIB
We study a model of random graph where vertices are $n$ i.i.d. uniform random points on the unit sphere $S^d$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, and a pair of vertices is connected if the Euclidean distance between them is at least $2- ε$. We are interested in the chromatic number of this graph as $n$ tends to infinity. It is not too hard to see that if $ε> 0$ is small and fixed, then the chromatic number is $d+2$ with high probability. We show that this holds even if $ε\to 0$ slowly enough. We quantify the rate at which $ε$ can tend to zero and still have the same chromatic number. The proof depends on combining topological methods (namely the Lyusternik--Schnirelman--Borsuk theorem) with geometric probability arguments. The rate we obtain is best possible, up to a constant factor --- if $ε\to 0$ faster than this, we show that the graph is $(d+1)$-colorable with high probability.

The Proportion of Trees that are Linear
We study several enumeration problems connected to linear trees, a broad class which includes stars, paths, generalized stars, and caterpillars. We provide generating functions for counting the number of linear trees on $n$ vertices, characterize the asymptotic growth rate of the number of nonisomorphic linear trees, and show that the distribution of $k$-linear trees on $n$ vertices follows a central limit theorem.

Most principal permutation classes have nonrational generating functions
We prove that for any fixed $n$, and for most permutation patterns $q$, the number $\textup{Av}_{n,\ell}(q)$ of $q$-avoiding permutations of length $n$ that consist of $\ell$ skew blocks is a monotone decreasing function of $\ell$. We then show that this implies that for most patterns $q$, the generating function $\sum_{n\geq 0} \textup{Av}_n(q)z^n$ of the sequence $\textup{Av}_n(q)$ of the numbers of $q$-avoiding permutations is not rational. Placing our results in a broader context, we show that for rational power series $F(z)$ and $G(z)$ with nonnegative real coefficients, the relation $F(z)=1/(1-G(z))$ is supercritical, while for most permutation patterns $q$, the corresponding relation is not supercritical.
Rainbow numbers of $[n]$ for $\sum_{i=1}^{k-1} x_i = x_k$
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics Volume 77(1) (2020), Pages 1-8 • Search Publication
Consider the set $\{1,2,\dots,n\} = [n]$ and an equation $eq$. The rainbow number of $[n]$ for $eq$, denoted $\operatorname{rb}([n],eq)$, is the smallest number of colors such that for every exact $\operatorname{rb}([n], eq)$-coloring of $[n]$, there exists a solution to $eq$ with every member of the solution set assigned a distinct color. This paper focuses on linear equations and, in particular, establishes the rainbow number for the equations $\sum_{i=1}^{k-1} x_i = x_k$ for $k=3$ and $k=4$. The paper also establishes a general lower bound for $k \ge 5$.

Realization of digraphs in Abelian groups and its consequences
Published in Journal of Graph Theory (2021) 1-15 • View Publication • BIB
Let $\overrightarrow{G}$ be a directed graph with no component of orderless than~$3$, and let $Γ$ be a finite Abelian group such that $|Γ|\geq 4|V(\overrightarrow{G})|$ or if $|V(\overrightarrow{G})|$ is large enough with respect to an arbitrarily fixed $\varepsilon>0$ then $|Γ|\geq (1+\varepsilon)|V(\overrightarrow{G})|$. We show that there exists an injective mapping $\varphi$ from $V(\overrightarrow{G})$ to the group $Γ$ such that $\sum_{x\in V(C)}\varphi(x) = 0$ for every connected component $C$ of $\overrightarrow{G}$, where $0$ is the identity element of $Γ$. Moreover we show some applications of this result to group distance magic labelings.

An Identity for Vertically Aligned Entries in Pascal's Triangle
The classic way to write down Pascal's triangle leads to entries in alternating rows being vertically aligned. In this paper, we prove a linear dependence on vertically aligned entries in Pascal's triangle. Furthermore, we give an application of this dependence to morphisms between hyperelliptic curves.

The thickness of the Kronecker product of graphs
The thickness of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of planar subgraphs whose union is $G$. In this paper, we present sharp lower and upper bounds for the thickness of the Kronecker product $G\times H$ of two graphs $G$ and $H$. We also give the exact thickness numbers for the Kronecker product graphs $K_n\times K_2$, $K_{m,n}\times K_2$ and $K_{n,n,n}\times K_2$.

On the generalized distance spectral radius of graphs
The generalized distance spectral radius of a connected graph $G$ is the spectral radius of the generalized distance matrix of $G$, defined by $$D_α(G)=αTr(G)+(1-α)D(G), \;\;0\leα\le 1,$$ where $D(G)$ and $Tr(G)$ denote the distance matrix and diagonal matrix of the vertex transmissions of $G$, respectively. This paper characterizes the unique graph with minimum generalized distance spectral radius among the connected graphs with fixed chromatic number, which answers a question about the generalized distance spectral radius in spectral extremal theories. In addition, we also determine graphs with minimum generalized distance spectral radius among the $n$-vertex trees and unicyclic graphs, respectively. These results generalize some known results about distance spectral radius and distance signless Laplacian spectral radius of graphs.
