Embedding complete multi-partite graphs into Cartesian product of paths and cycles
Graph embedding is a powerful method in parallel computing that maps a guest network $G$ into a host network $H$. The performance of an embedding can be evaluated by certain parameters, such as the dilation, the edge congestion and the wirelength. In this manuscript, we obtain the wirelength (exact and minimum) of embedding complete multi-partite graphs into Cartesian product of paths and cycles, which include $n$-cube, $n$-dimensional mesh (grid), $n$-dimensional cylinder and $n$-dimensional torus, etc., as the subfamilies.
Domination Parameters in Hypertrees and Sibling trees
A locating-dominating set (LDS) of a graph $G$ is a dominating set $S$ of $G$ such that for every two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $V(G) \setminus S$, $N(u)\cap S \neq N(v)\cap S$. The locating-domination number $γ^{L}(G)$ is the minimum cardinality of a LDS of $G$. Further if $S$ is a total dominating set then $S$ is called a locating-total dominating set. In this paper we determine the domination, total domination, locating-domination and locating-total domination numbers for hypertrees and sibling trees.

Extensions of Schreiber's theorem on discrete approximate subgroups in $\mathbb{R}^d$
In this paper we give an alternative proof of Schreiber's theorem which says that an infinite discrete approximate subgroup in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is relatively dense around a subspace. We also deduce from Schreiber's theorem two new results. The first one says that any infinite discrete approximate subgroup in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a restriction of a Meyer set to a thickening of a linear subspace in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and the second one provides an extension of Schreiber's theorem to the case of the Heisenberg group.

Existence of regular $3$-hypertopes with $2^n$ chambers
For any positive integers $n, s, t, l$ such that $n \geq 10$, $s, t \geq 2$, $l \geq 1$ and $n \geq s+t+l$, a new infinite family of regular 3-hypertopes with type $(2^s, 2^t, 2^l)$ and automorphism group of order $2^n$ is constructed.

Some identities involving second kind Stirling numbers of types $B$ and $D$
Published in Electro. J. Combin. 26(3) (2019), P3.9 • View Publication • BIB
Using Reiner's definition of Stirling numbers of the second kind in types $B$ and $D$, we generalize two well-known identities concerning the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. The first identity relates them with Eulerian numbers and the second identity interprets them as entries in a transition matrix between the elements of two standard bases of the polynomial ring $R[x]$. Finally, we generalize these identities to the group of colored permutations $G_{m,n}$.

Loop-erased walks and random matrices
Published in J Stat Phys 177, 528--567 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that there are close connections between non-intersecting processes in one dimension and random matrices, based on the reflection principle. There is a generalisation of the reflection principle for more general (e.g. planar) processes, due to S. Fomin, in which the non-intersection condition is replaced by a condition involving loop-erased paths. In the context of independent Brownian motions in suitable planar domains, this also has close connections to random matrices. An example of this was first observed by Sato and Katori (Phys. Rev. E, 83, 2011). We present further examples which give rise to various Cauchy-type ensembles. We also extend Fomin's identity to the affine setting and show that in this case, by considering independent Brownian motions in an annulus, one obtains a novel interpretation of the circular orthogonal ensemble.
The Firebreak Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Suppose we have a network that is represented by a graph $G$. Potentially a fire (or other type of contagion) might erupt at some vertex of $G$. We are able to respond to this outbreak by establishing a firebreak at $k$ other vertices of $G$, so that the fire cannot pass through these fortified vertices. The question that now arises is which $k$ vertices will result in the greatest number of vertices being saved from the fire, assuming that the fire will spread to every vertex that is not fully behind the $k$ vertices of the firebreak. This is the essence of the {\sc Firebreak} decision problem, which is the focus of this paper. We establish that the problem is intractable on the class of split graphs as well as on the class of bipartite graphs, but can be solved in linear time when restricted to graphs having constant-bounded treewidth, or in polynomial time when restricted to intersection graphs. We also consider some closely related problems.

Congruences for $q$-binomial coefficients
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 23 (2019), no. 3-4, 1123--1135 • View Publication • BIB
We discuss $q$-analogues of the classical congruence $\binom{ap}{bp}\equiv\binom{a}{b}\pmod{p^3}$, valid for primes $p>3$, as well as its generalisations. In particular, we prove related congruences for ($q$-analogues of) integral factorial ratios.

State matrix recursion method and monomer--dimer problem
The exact enumeration of pure dimer coverings on the square lattice was obtained by Kasteleyn, Temperley and Fisher in 1961. In this paper, we consider the monomer-dimer covering problem (allowing multiple monomers) which is an outstanding unsolved problem in lattice statistics. We have developed the state matrix recursion method that allows us to compute the number of monomer--dimer coverings and to know the partition function with monomer and dimer activities. This method proceeds with a recurrence relation of so-called state matrices of large size. The enumeration problem of pure dimer coverings and dimer coverings with single boundary monomer is revisited in partition function forms. We also provide the number of dimer coverings with multiple vacant sites. The related Hosoya index and the asymptotic behavior of its growth rate are considered. Lastly, we apply this method to the enumeration study of domino tilings of Aztec diamonds and more generalized regions, so-called Aztec octagons and multi-deficient Aztec octagons.

The Acyclic Chromatic Index is Less than the Double of the Max Degree
The acyclic chromatic index of a graph $G$ is the least number of colors needed to properly color its edges so that none of its cycles is bichromatic. In this work, we show that $2Δ-1$ colors are sufficient to produce such a coloring, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph. In contrast with most extant randomized algorithmic approaches to the chromatic index, where the algorithms presuppose enough colors to guarantee properness deterministically and use randomness only to deal with the bichromatic cycles, our randomized, Moser-type algorithm produces a not necessarily proper random coloring, in a structured way, trying to avoid cycles whose edges of the same parity are homochromatic, and only when this goal is reached it checks for properness. It repeats until properness is attained.

Computation of maximal projection constants
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 277, No. 10, 3560-3585 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
The linear projection constant $Π(E)$ of a finite-dimensional real Banach space $E$ is the smallest number $C\in [0,+\infty)$ such that $E$ is a $C$-absolute retract in the category of real Banach spaces with bounded linear maps. We denote by $Π_n$ the maximal linear projection constant amongst $n$-dimensional Banach spaces. In this article, we prove that $Π_n$ may be determined by computing eigenvalues of certain two-graphs. From this result we obtain that the relative projection constants of codimension $n$ converge to $1+Π_n$. Furthermore, using the classification of $K_4$-free two-graphs, we give an alternative proof of $Π_2=\frac{4}{3}$. We also show by means of elementary functional analysis that for each integer $n\geq 1$ there exists a polyhedral $n$-dimensional Banach space $F_n$ such that $Π(F_n)=Π_n$.

Higher Whitehead products in moment-angle complexes and substitution of simplicial complexes
Published in Proceedings of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics 305 (2019), 1-21 • View Publication • BIB
We study the question of realisability of iterated higher Whitehead products with a given form of nested brackets by simplicial complexes, using the notion of the moment-angle complex $Z_K$. Namely, we say that a simplicial complex $K$ realises an iterated higher Whitehead product $w$ if $w$ is a nontrivial element of $π_*(Z_K)$. The combinatorial approach to the question of realisability uses the operation of substitution of simplicial complexes: for any iterated higher Whitehead product $w$ we describe a simplicial complex $\partialΔ_w$ that realises $w$. Furthermore, for a particular form of brackets inside $w$, we prove that $\partialΔ_w$ is the smallest complex that realises $w$. We also give a combinatorial criterion for the nontriviality of the product $w$. In the proof of nontriviality we use the Hurewicz image of $w$ in the cellular chains of $Z_K$ and the description of the cohomology product of $Z_K$. The second approach is algebraic: we use the coalgebraic versions of the Koszul and Taylor complex for the face coalgebra of $K$ to describe the canonical cycles corresponding to iterated higher Whitehead products $w$. This gives another criterion for realisability of $w$.

Some new $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series
Published in Symmetry 2019, 11(2), 268 • View Publication • BIB
We provide several new $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series, mostly of arbitrary order. Our results include congruences modulo the square or the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial, and in some instances, parametric generalizations thereof. These are established by a variety of techniques including polynomial argument, creative microscoping (a method recently introduced by the first author in collaboration with Zudilin), Andrews' multiseries generalization of the Watson transformation, and induction. We also give a number of related conjectures including congruences modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial.

A general method to obtain the spectrum and local spectra of a graph from its regular partitions
It is well known that, in general, part of the spectrum of a graph can be obtained from the adjacency matrix of its quotient graph given by a regular partition. In this paper, we propose a method to obtain all the spectrum, and also the local spectra, of a graph $Γ$ from the quotient matrices of some of its regular partitions. As examples, it is shown how to find the eigenvalues and (local) multiplicities of walk-regular, distance-regular, and distance-biregular graphs.

Elementary Results on Forbidden Minors
We start by building up some theory to state Wagner's Theorem, and then prove it using Kuratowski's Theorem, a proof of which is found in Diester (2000). Following this, we establish some connections between the chromatic number of a graph and some of its forbidden minors. The idea is that if we forbid $G$ to have certain graphs as a minor, then the chromatic number of $G$ cannot be too large. Intuitively, this makes sense: if we disallow $G$ from having too many edges, then this makes it easier to colour the graph with fewer colours; we will of course make this precise. We close by explaining how this all relates to Hadwiger's Conjecture.

In How many ways can I carry a total of n coins in my two pockets, and have the same amount in both pockets?
In Gert Almkvist's beautiful article, entitled "Invariants, mostly old ones", (that appeared in the Pacific Journal of Mathematics, vol. 86 (1980), pp. 1-13) he talked about a sequence of generating functions that came up in his work, that turned out to be the same as generating functions for the number of covariants of binary quadratic forms studied by Faa de Bruno, Cayley, Sylvester, and other 19th century savantes. Using a very simple-minded Maple program (that uses the partial-fraction decomposition of a rational function), we recompute them, and go all the way to degree 18. It turns out that the same method can be used to answer many other enumeration questions, including the one in the title.

A classification of the m-graphical regular representation of finite groups
In this paper we extend the classical notion of digraphical and graphical regular representation of a group and we classify, by means of an explicit description, the finite groups satisfying this generalization. A graph or digraph is called regular if each vertex has the same valency, or, the same out-valency and the same in-valency, respectively. An m-(di)graphical regular representation (respectively, m-GRR and m-DRR, for short) of a group G is a regular (di)graph whose automorphism group is isomorphic to G and acts semiregularly on the vertex set with m orbits. When m=1, this definition agrees with the classical notion of GRR and DRR. Finite groups admitting a 1-DRR were classified by Babai in 1980, and the analogue classification of finite groups admitting a 1-GRR was completed by Godsil in 1981. Pivoting on these two results in this paper we classify finite groups admitting an m-GRR or an m-DRR, for arbitrary positive integers m. For instance, we prove that every non-identity finite group admits an m-GRR, for every m>4.

Regular maps of order $2$-powers
In this paper, we consider the possible types of regular maps of order $2^n$, where the order of a regular map is the order of automorphism group of the map. For $n \le 11$, M. Conder classified all regular maps of order $2^n$. It is easy to classify regular maps of order $2^n$ whose valency or covalency is $2$ or $2^{n-1}$. So we assume that $n \geq 12$ and $2\leq s,t\leq n-2$ with $s\leq t$ to consider regular maps of order $2^n$ with type $\{2^s, 2^t\}$. We show that for $s+t\leq n$ or for $s+t>n$ with $s=t$, there exists a regular map of order $2^n$ with type $\{2^s, 2^t\}$, and furthermore, we classify regular maps of order $2^n$ with types $\{2^{n-2},2^{n-2}\}$ and $\{2^{n-3},2^{n-3}\}$. We conjecture that, if $s+t>n$ with $s<t$, then there is no regular map of order $2^n$ with type $\{2^s, 2^t\}$, and we confirm the conjecture for $t=n-2$ and $n-3$.

Factors of some truncated basic hypergeometric series
We prove that certain basic hypergeometric series truncated at $k=n-1$ have the factor $Φ_n(q)^2$, where $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial. This confirms two recent conjectures of the author and Zudilin. We also put forward some conjectures on $q$-congruences modulo $Φ_n(q)^2$.
