Chinese syzygies by insertions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a finite convergent semi-quadratic presentation for the Chinese monoid by adding column generators and using combinatorial properties of insertion algorithms on Chinese staircases. We extend this presentation into a coherent one whose generators are columns, rewriting rules are defined by insertion algorithms, and whose syzygies are defined as relations among insertion algorithms. Such a coherent presentation is used for representations of Chinese monoids, in particular, it is a way to describe actions of Chinese monoids on categories.

The crossing number of a graph $G$ is the least number of crossings over all possible drawings of $G$. We present a structural characterization of graphs with crossing number one.

Congruence classes of large configurations in vector spaces over finite fields
Bennett, Hart, Iosevich, Pakianathan, and Rudnev found an exponent $s<d$ such that any set $E\subset \mathbb{F}_q^d$ with $|E|\gtrsim q^s$ determines $\gtrsim q^{\binom{k+1}{2}}$ congruence classes of $(k+1)$-point configurations for $k\leq d$. Because congruence classes can be identified with tuples of distances between distinct points when $k\leq d$, and because there are $\binom{k+1}{2}$ such pairs, this means any such $E$ determines a positive proportion of all congruence classes. In the $k>d$ case, fixing all pairs of distnaces leads to an overdetermined system, so $q^{\binom{k+1}{2}}$ is no longer the correct number of congruence classes. We determine the correct number, and prove that $|E|\gtrsim q^s$ still determines a positive proportion of all congruence classes, for the same $s$ as in the $k\leq d$ case.

Generating weighted Hurwitz numbers
Published in J. Math. Phys. 61, 013506 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
Multicurrent correlators associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type are used as generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers. These are expressed as formal Taylor series and used to compute generic, simple, rational and quantum weighted single Hurwitz numbers.

Successive minima of line bundles
We introduce and study the successive minima of line bundles on proper algebraic varieties. The first (resp. last) minima are the width (resp. Seshadri constant) of the line bundle at very general points. The volume of the line bundle is equivalent to the product of the successive minima. For line bundles on toric varieties, the successive minima are equivalent to the (reciprocal of) usual successive minima of the difference of the moment polytope.

On vertex adjacencies in the polytope of pyramidal tours with step-backs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the traveling salesperson problem in a directed graph. The pyramidal tours with step-backs are a special class of Hamiltonian cycles for which the traveling salesperson problem is solved by dynamic programming in polynomial time. The polytope of pyramidal tours with step-backs $PSB (n)$ is defined as the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of all possible pyramidal tours with step-backs in a complete directed graph. The skeleton of $PSB (n)$ is the graph whose vertex set is the vertex set of $PSB (n)$ and the edge set is the set of geometric edges or one-dimensional faces of $PSB (n)$. The main result of the paper is a necessary and sufficient condition for vertex adjacencies in the skeleton of the polytope $PSB (n)$ that can be verified in polynomial time.

Hereditary classes of ordered binary structures
Balogh, Bollobás and Morris (2006) have described a threshold phenomenon in the behavior of the profile of hereditary classes of ordered graphs. In this paper, we give an other look at their result based on the notion of monomorphic decomposition of a relational structure introduced in \cite{P-T-2013}. We prove that the class $\mathfrak S$ of ordered binary structures which do not have a finite monomorphic decomposition has a finite basis (a subset $\mathfrak A$ such that every member of $\mathfrak S$ embeds some member of $\mathfrak A$). In the case of ordered reflexive directed graphs, the basis has 1242 members and the profile of their ages grows at least as the Fibonacci function. From this result, we deduce that the following dichotomy property holds for every hereditary class $\mathfrak C$ of finite ordered binary structures of a given finite type. Either there is an integer $\ell$ such that every member of $\mathfrak C$ has a monomorphic decomposition into at most $\ell$ blocks and in this case the profile of $\mathfrak C$ is bounded by a polynomial of degree $\ell-1$ (and in fact is a polynomial), or $\mathfrak C$ contains the age of a structure which does not have a finite monomorphic decomposition, in which case the profile of $\mathfrak C$ is bounded below by the Fibonacci function.

About an extension of the Davenport-Rado result to the Herzog-Schonheim conjecture for free groups
Published in Advances in Group theory and applications 2021 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a group and $H_1$,...,$H_s$ be subgroups of $G$ of indices $d_1$,...,$d_s$ respectively. In 1974, M. Herzog and J. Schönheim conjectured that if $\{H_iα_i\}_{i=1}^{i=s}$, $α_i\in G$, is a coset partition of $G$, then $d_1$,..,$d_s$ cannot be distinct. We consider the Herzog-Schönheim conjecture for free groups of finite rank and propose a new approach, based on an extension of the Davenport-Rado result for $G=\mathbb{Z}$.

The Green-Tao theorem for Piatetski-Shapiro primes
Let $m\geq 3$. Suppose that $$ 1-2^{-2^{m^24^m}}<γ<1. $$ Then the set $$ \{p\text{ prime}:\, p=[n^{\frac1γ}]\text{ for some }n\in{\mathbb N}\} $$ contains infinitely many non-trivial $m$-term arithmetic progressions.

On the Existence of Telescopers for Rational Functions in Three Variables
Zeilberger's method of creative telescoping is crucial for the computer-generated proofs of combinatorial and special-function identities. Telescopers are linear differential or ($q$-)recurrence operators computed by algorithms for creative telescoping. For a given class of inputs, when telescopers exist and how to construct telescopers efficiently if they exist are two fundamental problems related to creative telescoping. In this paper, we solve the existence problem of telescopers for rational functions in three variables including 18 cases. We reduce the existence problem from the trivariate case to the bivariate case and some related problems. The existence criteria given in this paper enable us to determine the termination of algorithms for creative telescoping with trivariate rational inputs.

Cutoff on Ramanujan complexes and classical groups
Published in Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici, 97(3):431-456, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
The total-variation cutoff phenomenon has been conjectured to hold for simple random walk on all transitive expanders. However, very little is actually known regarding this conjecture, and cutoff on sparse graphs in general. In this paper we establish total-variation cutoff for simple random walk on Ramanujan complexes of type $\widetilde{A}_{d}$ $(d\geq1)$. As a result, we obtain explicit generators for the finite classical groups $\mathrm{PGL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ for which the associated Cayley graphs exhibit total-variation cutoff.

Improved Lower Bound for Difference Bases
Published in Journal of Number Theory, 205 (2019), pp. 50--58 • View Publication • BIB
A difference basis with respect to $n$ is a subset $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ such that $A - A \supseteq \{1, \ldots, n\}$. Rédei and Rényi showed that the minimum size of a difference basis with respect to $n$ is $(c+o(1))\sqrt{n}$ for some positive constant $c$. The best previously known lower bound on $c$ is $c \geqslant 1.5602\ldots$, which was obtained by Leech using a version of an earlier argument due to Rédei and Rényi. In this note we use Fourier-analytic tools to show that the Leech--Rédei--Rényi lower bound is not sharp.

Singular Ramsey and Turán numbers
We say that a subgraph $F$ of a graph $G$ is singular if the degrees $d_G(v)$ are all equal or all distinct for the vertices $v\in V(F)$. The singular Ramsey number Rs$(F)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that, for every $m\geq n$, in every edge 2-coloring of $K_m$, at least one of the color classes contains $F$ as a singular subgraph. In a similar flavor, the singular Turán number Ts$(n,F)$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph of order $n$, which does not contain $F$ as a singular subgraph. In this paper we initiate the study of these extremal problems. We develop methods to estimate Rs$(F)$ and Ts$(n,F)$, present tight asymptotic bounds and exact results.

Subspace arrangements, graph rigidity and derandomization through submodular optimization
This paper presents a deterministic, strongly polynomial time algorithm for computing the matrix rank for a class of symbolic matrices (whose entries are polynomials over a field). This class was introduced, in a different language, by Lovász [Lov] in his study of flats in matroids, and proved a duality theorem putting this problem in $NP \cap coNP$. As such, our result is another demonstration where ``good characterization'' in the sense of Edmonds leads to an efficient algorithm. In a different paper Lovász [Lov79] proved that all such symbolic rank problems have efficient probabilistic algorithms, namely are in $BPP$. As such, our algorithm may be interpreted as a derandomization result, in the long sequence special cases of the PIT (Polynomial Identity Testing) problem. Finally, Lovász and Yemini [LoYe] showed how the same problem generalizes the graph rigidity problem in two dimensions. As such, our algorithm may be seen as a generalization of the well-known deterministic algorithm for the latter problem. There are two somewhat unusual technical features in this paper. The first is the translation of Lovász' flats problem into a symbolic rank one. The second is the use of submodular optimization for derandomization. We hope that the tools developed for both will be useful for related problems, in particular for better understanding of graph rigidity in higher dimensions.

Discretized sum-product for large sets
Published in Moscow J. Comb. Number Th. 9 (2020) 17-27 • View Publication • BIB
Let $A\subset [1, 2]$ be a $(δ, σ)$-set with measure $|A|=δ^{1-σ}$ in the sense of Katz and Tao. For $σ\in (1/2, 1)$ we show that $$ |A+A|+|AA|\gtrapprox δ^{-c}|A|, $$ for $c=\frac{(1-σ)(2σ-1)}{6σ+4}$. This improves the bound of Guth, Katz, and Zahl for large $σ$.
Algebraic Systems for DNA Origami Motivated from Temperley-Lieb Algebras
We initiate an algebraic approach to study DNA origami structures by associating an element from a monoid to each structure. We identify two types of basic building blocks and describe an DNA origami structure with their composition. These building blocks are taken as generators of a monoid, called origami monoid, and, motivated by the well studied Temperley-Lieb algebras, we identify a set of relations that characterize the origami monoid. We also present several observations about the Green's relations for the origami monoid and study the relations to a cross product of Jones monoids that is a morphic image of an origami monoid.
Hamilton cycles and perfect matchings in the KPKVB model
In this paper we consider the existence of Hamilton cycles and perfect matchings in a random graph model proposed by Krioukov et al.~in 2010. In this model, nodes are chosen randomly inside a disk in the hyperbolic plane and two nodes are connected if they are at most a certain hyperbolic distance from each other. It has been previously shown that this model has various properties associated with complex networks, including a power-law degree distribution, "short distances" and a strictly positive clustering coefficient. The model is specified using three parameters: the number of nodes $n$, which we think of as going to infinity, and $α, ν> 0$, which we think of as constant. Roughly speaking $α$ controls the power law exponent of the degree sequence and $ν$ the average degree. Here we show that for every $α< 1/2$ and $ν=ν(α)$ sufficiently small, the model does not contain a perfect matching with high probability, whereas for every $α< 1/2$ and $ν=ν(α)$ sufficiently large, the model contains a Hamilton cycle with high probability.

Packing without some pieces

Erdős and Hanani proved that for every fixed integer $k \ge 2$, the complete graph $K_n$ can be almost completely packed with copies of $K_k$; that is, $K_n$ contains pairwise edge-disjoint copies of $K_k$ that cover all but an $o_n(1)$ fraction of its edges. Equivalently, elements of the set $\C(k)$ of all red-blue edge colorings of $K_k$ can be used to almost completely pack every red-blue edge coloring of $K_n$. The following strengthening of the aforementioned Erdős-Hanani result is considered. Suppose $\C' \subset \C(k)$. Is it true that we can use elements only from $\C'$ and almost completely pack every red-blue edge coloring of $K_n$? An element $C \in \C(k)$ is {\em avoidable} if $\C'=\C(k) \setminus C$ has this property and a subset ${\cal F} \subset \C(k)$ is avoidable if $\C'=\C(k) \setminus {\cal F}$ has this property. It seems difficult to determine all avoidable graphs as well as all avoidable families. We prove some nontrivial sufficient conditions for avoidability. Our proofs imply, in particular, that (i) almost all elements of $\C(k)$ are avoidable (ii) all Eulerian elements of $\C(k)$ are avoidable and, in fact, the set of all Eulerian elements of $\C(k)$ is avoidable.

Steiner systems $S(2, 4, \frac{3^m-1}{2})$ and $2$-designs from ternary linear codes of length $\frac{3^m-1}{2}$
Coding theory and $t$-designs have close connections and interesting interplay. In this paper, we first introduce a class of ternary linear codes and study their parameters. We then focus on their three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution. We determine the weight distributions of some shortened codes and punctured codes of these three-weight subcodes. These shortened and punctured codes contain some codes that have the same parameters as the best ternary linear codes known in the database maintained by Markus Grassl at http://www.codetables.de/. These three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution do not satisfy the conditions of the Assmus-Mattson theorem and do not admit $2$-transitive or $2$-homogeneous automorphism groups in general. By employing the theory of projective geometries and projective generalized Reed-Muller codes, we prove that they still hold $2$-designs. We also determine the parameters of these $2$-designs. This paper mainly confirms some recent conjectures of Ding and Li regarding Steiner systems and $2$-designs from a special type of ternary projective codes.

Beyond the Erdős Matching Conjecture
A family $\mathcal F\subset {[n]\choose k}$ is $U(s,q)$ of for any $F_1,\ldots, F_s\in \mathcal F$ we have $|F_1\cup\ldots\cup F_s|\le q$. This notion generalizes the property of a family to be $t$-intersecting and to have matching number smaller than $s$. In this paper, we find the maximum $|\mathcal F|$ for $\mathcal F$ that are $U(s,q)$, provided $n>C(s,q)k$ with moderate $C(s,q)$. In particular, we generalize the result of the first author on the Erdős Matching Conjecture and prove a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, which states that for $n> s^2k$ the largest family $\mathcal F\subset {[n]\choose k}$ with property $U(s,s(k-1)+1)$ is the star and is in particular intersecting. (Conversely, it is easy to see that any intersecting family in ${[n]\choose k}$ is $U(s,s(k-1)+1)$.) We investigate the case $k=3$ more thoroughly, showing that, unlike in the case of the Erdős Matching Conjecture, in general there may be $3$ extremal families.
