Increasing Consecutive Patterns in Words

We show how to enumerate words in $1^{m_1} \dots n^{m_n}$ that avoid the increasing consecutive pattern $12 \dots r$ for any $r \geq 2$. Our approach yields an $O(n^{s+1})$ algorithm to enumerate words in $1^s \dots n^s$, avoiding the consecutive pattern $1\dots r$, for any $s$, and any $r$. This enables us to supply many more terms to quite a few OEIS sequences, and create new ones. We also treat the more general case of counting words with a specified number of the pattern of interest (the avoiding case corresponding to zero appearances). This article is accompanied by three Maple packages implementing our algorithms.
A generalized Hardy-Ramanujan formula for the number of restricted integer partitions

We derive the asymptotic formula for $p_n(N,M)$, the number of partitions of integer $n$ with part size at most $N$ and length at most $M$. We consider both $N$ and $M$ are comparable to $\sqrt{n}$. This is an extension of the classical Hardy-Ramanujan formula and Szekeres' formula. The proof relies on the saddle point method.
Labeled Packing of Cycles and Circuits

In 2013, Duch{ê}ne, Kheddouci, Nowakowski and Tahraoui [4, 9] introduced a labeled version of the graph packing problem. It led to the introduction of a new parameter for graphs, the k-labeled packing number $λ$ k. This parameter corresponds to the maximum number of labels we can assign to the vertices of the graph, such that we will be able to create a packing of k copies of the graph, while conserving the labels of the vertices. The authors intensively studied the labeled packing of cycles, and, among other results, they conjectured that for every cycle C n of order n = 2k + x, with k $\ge$ 2 and 1 $\le$ x $\le$ 2k -- 1, the value of $λ$ k (C n) was 2 if x was 1 and k was even, and x + 2 otherwise. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture by giving a counter example. We however prove that it gives a valid lower bound, and we give sufficient conditions for the upper bound to hold. We then give some similar results for the labeled packing of circuits.
The Crossing Number of Semi-Pair-Shellable Drawings of Complete Graphs
The Harary-Hill Conjecture states that for $n\geq 3$ every drawing of $K_n$ has at least \begin{align*}
H(n) := \frac{1}{4}\Big\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-1}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-2}{2}\Big\rfloor\Big\lfloor\frac{n-3}{2}\Big\rfloor \end{align*} crossings. In general the problem remains unsolved, however there has been some success in proving the conjecture for restricted classes of drawings. The most recent and most general of these classes is seq-shellability. In this work, we improve these results and introduce the new class of semi-pair-shellable drawings. We prove the Harary-Hill Conjecture for this new class using novel results on $k$-edges. So far, approaches for proving the Harary-Hill Conjecture for specific classes rely on a fixed reference face. We successfully apply new techniques in order to loosen this restriction, which enables us to select different reference faces when considering subdrawings. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of $k$-deviations as the difference between an optimal and the actual number of $k$-edges. Using $k$-deviations, we gain interesting insights into the essence of $k$-edges, and we further relax the necessity of fixed reference faces.
Distribution of Base Pair Alternations in a Periodic DNA Chain: Application of Polya Counting to a Physical System

In modeling DNA chains, the number of alternations between Adenine-Thymine (AT) and Guanine-Cytosine (GC) base pairs can be considered as a measure of the heterogeneity of the chain, which in turn could affect its dynamics. A probability distribution function of the number of these alternations is derived for circular or periodic DNA. Since there are several symmetries to account for in the periodic chain, necklace counting methods are used. In particular, Polya's Enumeration Theorem is extended for the case of a group action that preserves partitioned necklaces. This, along with the treatment of generating functions as formal power series, allows for the direct calculation of the number of possible necklaces with a given number of AT base pairs, GC base pairs and alternations. The theoretically obtained probability distribution functions of the number of alternations are accurately reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations and fitted by Gaussians. The effect of the number of base pairs on the characteristics of these distributions is also discussed, as well as the effect of the ratios of the numbers of AT and GC base pairs.
Exceptional graphs for the random walk

If $\mathcal{W}$ is the simple random walk on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$, then $\mathcal{W}$ induces a random walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ on any spanning subgraph $G\subset \mathbb{Z}^2$ of the lattice as follows: viewing $\mathcal{W}$ as a uniformly random infinite word on the alphabet $\{\mathbf{x}, -\mathbf{x}, \mathbf{y}, -\mathbf{y} \}$, the walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ starts at the origin and follows the directions specified by $\mathcal{W}$, only accepting steps of $\mathcal{W}$ along which the walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ does not exit $G$. For any fixed subgraph $G \subset \mathbb{Z}^2$, the walk $\mathcal{W}_G$ is distributed as the simple random walk on $G$, and hence $\mathcal{W}_G$ is almost surely recurrent in the sense that $\mathcal{W}_G$ visits every site reachable from the origin in $G$ infinitely often. This fact naturally leads us to ask the following: does $\mathcal{W}$ almost surely have the property that $\mathcal{W}_G$ is recurrent for \emph{every} subgraph $G \subset \mathbb{Z}^2$? We answer this question negatively, demonstrating that exceptional subgraphs exist almost surely. In fact, we show more to be true: exceptional subgraphs continue to exist almost surely for a countable collection of independent simple random walks, but on the other hand, there are almost surely no exceptional subgraphs for a branching random walk.
Monochromatic solutions to $x+y=z^2$ in the interval $[N,cN^4]$

Green and Lindqvist proved that for any 2-colouring of $\mathbb{N}$, there are in\-fi\-ni\-tely many monochromatic solutions to $x+y=z^2$. In fact, they showed the existence of a monochromatic solution in every interval $[N,cN^8]$ with large enough $N$. In this short note we give a different proof for their theorem and prove that a monochromatic solution exists in every interval $[N,10^4N^4]$ with large enough $N$. A 2-colouring of $[N,(1/27)N^4]$ avoiding monochromatic solutions to $x+y=z^2$ is also presented, which shows that in $10^4N^4$ only the constant factor can be reduced.
The number of maximum primitive sets of integers

A set of integers is \emph{primitive} if it does not contain an element dividing another. Denote by $f(n)$ the number of maximum-size primitive subsets of $\{1,\ldots, 2n\}$. We prove that the limit $α=\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}f(n)^{1/n}$ exists. Furthermore, we present an algorithm approximating $α$ with $(1+\varepsilon)$ multiplicative error in $N(\varepsilon)$ steps, showing in particular that $α\approx 1.318$. Our algorithm can be adapted to estimate also the number of all primitive sets in $\{1,\ldots, n\}$.
We address another related problem of Cameron and Erdős. They showed that the number of sets containing pairwise coprime integers in $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ is between $2^{π(n)}\cdot e^{(\frac{1}{2}+o(1))\sqrt{n}}$ and $2^{π(n)}\cdot e^{(2+o(1))\sqrt{n}}$. We show that neither of these bounds is tight: there are in fact $2^{π(n)}\cdot e^{(1+o(1))\sqrt{n}}$ such sets.
Combinatorial Properties of Metrically Homogeneous Graphs
Ramsey theory looks for regularities in large objects. Model theory studies algebraic structures as models of theories. The structural Ramsey theory combines these two fields and is concerned with Ramsey-type questions about certain model-theoretic structures. In 2005, Nešetřil initiated a systematic study of the so-called Ramsey classes of finite structures. This thesis is a contribution to the programme; we find Ramsey expansions of the primitive 3-constrained classes from Cherlin's catalogue of metrically homogeneous graphs. A key ingradient is an explicit combinatorial algorithm to fill-in the missing distances in edge-labelled graphs to obtain structures from Cherlin's classes. This algorithm also implies the extension property for partial automorphisms (EPPA), another combinatorial property of classes of finite structures.

We introduce the notion of a symmetric basis of a vector space equipped with a quadratic form, and provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence to such a basis. Symmetric bases are then used to study Cayley graphs of certain extraspecial 2-groups of order 2^{2r+1} (r\geq 1), which are further shown to be normal Cayley graphs and 2-arc-transitive covers of 2r-dimensional hypercubes.
A bound on judicious bipartitions of directed graphs

Judicious partitioning problems on graphs ask for partitions that bound several quantities simultaneously, which have received a lot of attentions lately. Scott asked the following natural question: What is the maximum constant $c_d$ such that every directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs and minimum outdegree $d$ admits a bipartition $V(D)= V_1\cup V_2$ satisfying $\min\{e(V_1, V_2), e(V_2, V_1)\}\ge c_d m$? Here, for $i=1,2$, $e(V_{i},V_{3-i})$ denotes the number of arcs in $D$ from $V_{i}$ to $V_{3-i}$. Lee, Loh, and Sudakov %[Judicious partitions of directed graphs, Random Struct. Alg. 48 %(2016) 147--170] conjectured that every directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs and minimum outdegree at least $d\ge 2$ admits a bipartition $V(D)=V_1\cup V_2$ such that \[ \min\{e(V_1,V_2),e(V_2,V_1)\}\geq \Big(\frac{d-1}{2(2d-1)}+ o(1)\Big)m. \] %While it is not known whether or not the minimum outdegree condition %alone is sufficient, w We show that this conjecture holds under the additional natural condition that the minimum indegree is also at least $d$.
A Generalized-Polymatroid Approach to Disjoint Common Independent Sets in Two Matroids

In this paper, we investigate the classes of matroid intersection admitting a solution for the problem of partitioning the ground set $E$ into $k$ common independent sets, where $E$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets in each of the two matroids. For this problem, we present a new approach building upon the generalized-polymatroid intersection theorem. We exhibit that this approach offers alternative proofs and unified understandings of previous results showing that the problem has a solution for the intersection of two laminar matroids and that of two matroids without $(k+1)$-spanned elements. Moreover, we newly show that the intersection of a laminar matroid and a matroid without $(k+1)$-spanned elements admits a solution. We also construct an example of a transversal matroid which is incompatible with the generalized-polymatroid approach.

Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $r_{3}(G)$ represent the size of the largest subset of $G$ without non-trivial three-term progressions. In a recent breakthrough, Croot, Lev and Pach proved that $r_{3}(C_{4}^{n}) \leqslant (3.61)^{n}$, where $C_{m}$ denotes the cyclic group of order $m$. For finite abelian groups $G \cong \prod_{i=1}^{n} C_{m_{i}}$, where $m_{1},\ldots,m_{n}$ denote positive integers such that $m_{1} | \ldots | m_{n}$, this also yields a bound of the form $r_{3}(G) \leqslant (0.903)^{\operatorname{rk}_{4}(G)} |G|$, with $\operatorname{rk}_{4}(G)$ representing the number of indices $i \in \left\{1,\ldots,n\right\}$ with $4\ |\ m_{i}$. In particular, $r_{3}(C_{8}^{n}) \leqslant (7.22)^{n}$. In this paper, we provide an exponential improvement for this bound, namely $r_{3}(C_{8}^{n}) \leq (7.09)^{n}$.

A mixed graph is obtained from an unoriented graph by orienting a subset of its edges. Yu, Liu, and Qu in 2017 have established the expression for the determinant of Hermitian (quasi-) Laplacian matrix of a mixed graph. Here we find general expressions for all minors of Hermitian (quasi-) Laplacian matrix of mixed graphs.
On minimal Besicovitch arrangements
In this paper we focus on minimal Besicovitch arrangements to highlight some of their properties. An appropriate probability space enables us to find again in an elegant way some straightforward equalities associated with these arrangements. Resulting inequalities are also brought out. A connection with arrangements of lines in R2 is eventually made, where possible.

Given two $k$-graphs $F$ and $H$, a perfect $F$-tiling (also called an $F$-factor) in $H$ is a set of vertex disjoint copies of $F$ that together cover the vertex set of $H$. Let $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every $k$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum codegree at least $t$ contains a perfect $F$-tiling. Mycroft (JCTA, 2016) determined the asymptotic values of $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ for $k$-partite $k$-graphs $F$. Mycroft also conjectured that the error terms $o(n)$ in $t_{k-1}(n, F)$ can be replaced by a constant that depends only on $F$. In this paper, we improve the error term of Mycroft's result to a sub-linear term when $F=K^3(m)$, the complete $3$-partite $3$-graph with each part of size $m$. We also show that the sub-linear term is tight for $K^3(2)$, {the result also provides another family of counterexamples of Mycroft's conjecture (Gao, Han, Zhao (arXiv, 2016) gave a family of counterexamples when $H$ is a $k$-partite $k$-graph with some restrictions.)} Finally, we show that Mycroft's conjecture holds for generalized 4-cycle $C_4^3$ (the 3-graph on six vertices and four distinct edges $A, B, C, D$ with $A\cup B= C\cup D$ and $A\cap B=C\cap D=\emptyset$), i.e. we determine the exact value of $t_2(n, C_4^3)$.

We prove a law of large numbers for the range of rotor walks with random initial configuration on regular trees and on Galton-Watson trees. More precisely, we show that on the classes of trees under consideration, even in the case when the rotor walk is recurrent, the range grows at linear speed. We also show the existence of the speed for such rotor walks.

Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For any real $α\in [0,1]$, Nikiforov [Merging the $A$- and $Q$-spectral theories, Appl. Anal. Discrete Math. 11 (2017) 81--107] defined the matrix $A_α(G)$ as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G).$ Let $u$ and $v$ be two vertices of a connected graph $G$. Suppose that $u$ and $v$ are connected by a path $w_0(=v)w_1\cdots w_{s-1}w_s(=u)$ where $d(w_i)=2$ for $1\leq i\leq s-1$. Let $G_{p,s,q}(u,v)$ be the graph obtained by attaching the paths $P_p$ to $u$ and $P_q$ to $v$. Let $s=0,1$. Nikiforov and Rojo [On the $α$-index of graphs with pendent paths, Linear Algebra Appl. 550 (2018) 87--104] conjectured that $ρ_α(G_{p,s,q}(u,v))<ρ_α(G_{p-1,s,q+1}(u,v))$ if $p\geq q+2.$ In this paper, we confirm the conjecture. As applications, firstly, the extremal graph with maximal $A_α$-spectral radius with fixed order and cut vertices is characterized. Secondly, we characterize the extremal tree which attains the maximal $A_α$-spectral radius with fixed order and matching number. These results generalize some known results.
Ramsey Numbers of Interval 2-chromatic Ordered Graphs

An ordered graph $G$ is a graph together with a specified linear ordering on the vertices, and its interval chromatic number is the minimum number of independent sets consisting of consecutive vertices that are needed to partition the vertex set. The $t$-color Ramsey number $R_t(G)$ of an ordered graph $G$ is the minimum number of vertices of an ordered complete graph such that every edge-coloring from a set of $t$ colors contains a monochromatic copy of $G$ such that the copy of $G$ preserves the original ordering on $G$. An ordered graph is $k$-ichromatic if it has interval chromatic number $k$. We obtain lower bounds linear in the number of vertices for the Ramsey numbers of certain classes of 2-ichromatic ordered graphs. We also determine the exact value of the $t$-color Ramsey number for two families of 2-ichromatic ordered graphs, and we prove a linear upper bound for a class of 2-ichromatic ordered graphs.
