Transversals, plexes, and multiplexes in iterated quasigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $d$-ary quasigroup of order $n$ is a $d$-ary operation over a set of cardinality $n$ such that the Cayley table of the operation is a $d$-dimensional latin hypercube of the same order. Given a binary quasigroup $G$, the $d$-iterated quasigroup $G^{\left[d\right]}$ is a $d$-ary quasigroup that is a $d$-time composition of $G$ with itself. A $k$-multiplex (a $k$-plex) $K$ in a $d$-dimensional latin hypercube $Q$ of order $n$ or in the corresponding $d$-ary quasigroup is a multiset (a set) of $kn$ entries such that each hyperplane and each symbol of $Q$ is covered by exactly $k$ elements of $K$. A transversal is a 1-plex. In this paper we prove that there exists a constant $c(G,k)$ such that if a $d$-iterated quasigroup $G$ of order $n$ has a $k$-multiplex then for large $d$ the number of its $k$-multiplexes is asymptotically equal to $c(G,k) \left(\frac{(kn)!}{k!^n}\right)^{d-1}$. As a corollary we obtain that if the number of transversals in the Cayley table of a $d$-iterated quasigroup $G$ of order $n$ is nonzero then asymptotically it is $c(G,1) n!^{d-1}$. In addition, we provide limit constants and recurrence formulas for the numbers of transversals in two iterated quasigroups of order 5, characterize a typical $k$-multiplex and estimate numbers of partial $k$-multiplexes and transversals in $d$-iterated quasigroups.

Depth and Stanley depth of symbolic powers of cover ideals of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices and let $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal of $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that the sequences $\{{\rm sdepth}(S/J(G)^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^\infty$ and $\{{\rm sdepth}(J(G)^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^\infty$ are non-increasing and hence convergent. Suppose that $ν_{o}(G)$ denotes the ordered matching number of $G$. We show that for every integer $k\geq 2ν_{o}(G)-1$, the modules $J(G)^{(k)}$ and $S/J(G)^{(k)}$ satisfy the Stanley's inequality. We also provide an alternative proof for \cite[Theorem 3.4]{hktt} which states that ${\rm depth}(S/J(G)^{(k)})=n-ν_{o}(G)-1$, for every integer $k\geq 2ν_{o}(G)-1$.

Regularity of symbolic powers of cover ideals of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph which belongs to either of the following classes: (i) bipartite graphs, (ii) unmixed graphs, or (iii) claw--free graphs. Assume that $J(G)$ is the cover ideal $G$ and $J(G)^{(k)}$ is its $k$-th symbolic power. We prove that$$k{\rm deg}(J(G))\leq {\rm reg}(J(G)^{(k)})\leq (k-1){\rm deg}(J(G))+|V(G)|-1.$$We also determine families of graphs for which the above inequalities are equality.

Quiver mutation and combinatorial DT-invariants
A quiver is an oriented graph. Quiver mutation is an elementary operation on quivers. It appeared in physics in Seiberg duality in the nineties and in mathematics in the definition of cluster algebras by Fomin-Zelevinsky in 2002. We show, for large classes of quivers Q, using quiver mutation and quantum dilogarithms, one can construct the combinatorial DT-invariant, a formal power series intrinsically associated with Q. When defined, it coincides with the "total" Donaldson-Thomas invariant of Q (with a generic potential) provided by algebraic geometry (work of Joyce, Kontsevich-Soibelman, Szendroi and many others). We illustrate combinatorial DT-invariants on many examples and point out their links to quantum cluster algebras and to (infinite) generalized associahedra.

Hyperfinite graphings and combinatorial optimization
Published in Acta Math. Hung. 161 (2020), 516--539 • Search Publication
We exhibit an analogy between the problem of pushing forward measurable sets under measure preserving maps and linear relaxations in combinatorialoptimization. We show how invariance of hyperfiniteness of graphings under local isomorphism can be reformulated as an infinite version of a natural combinatorial optimization problem, and how one can prove it by extending well-known proof techniques (linear relaxation, greedy algorithm, linear programming duality) from the finite case to the infinite.

Identifying combinatorially symmetric Hidden Markov Models
Published in Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra, Volume 34, pp. 393-398 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
We provide a sufficient criterion for the unique parameter identification of combinatorially symmetric Hidden Markov Models based on the structure of their transition matrix. If the observed states of the chain form a zero forcing set of the graph of the Markov model then it is uniquely identifiable and an explicit reconstruction method is given.

Some results on generalized strong external difference families
Published • View Publication • BIB
A generalized strong external difference family (briefly $(v, m; k_1,\dots,k_m; λ_1,\dots,λ_m)$-GSEDF) was introduced by Paterson and Stinson in 2016. In this paper, we construct some new GSEDFs for $m=2$ and use them to obtain some results on graph decomposition. We also give some nonexistence results for GSEDFs. Especially, we prove that a $(v, 3;k_1,k_2,k_3; λ_1,λ_2,λ_3)$-GSEDF does not exist when $k_1+k_2+k_3< v$.

A recursion on maximal chains in the Tamari lattices
Published in Discrete Math. 340 (2017), no. 4, 661--677. MR3603545 • View Publication • BIB
The Tamari lattices have been intensely studied since their introduction by Dov Tamari around 1960. However oddly enough, a formula for the number of maximal chains is still unknown. This is due largely to the fact that maximal chains in the $n$-th Tamari lattice $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ range in length from $n-1$ to ${n \choose 2}$. In this note, we treat vertices in the lattice as Young diagrams and identify maximal chains as certain tableaux. For each $i\geq-1$, we define $\mathcal{C}_{i}(n)$ as the set of maximal chains in $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ of length $n+i$. We give a recursion for $\#\mathcal{C}_{i}(n)$ and an explicit formula based on predetermined initial values. The formula is a polynomial in $n$ of degree $3i+3$. For example, the number of maximal chains of length $n$ in $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ is $\#\mathcal{C}_{0}(n)={n \choose 3}$. The formula has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of a special property of maximal chains.

Extremal $k$-forcing sets in oriented graphs
This article studies the \emph{$k$-forcing number} for oriented graphs, generalizing both the \emph{zero forcing number} for directed graphs and the $k$-forcing number for simple graphs. In particular, given a simple graph $G$, we introduce the maximum (minimum) oriented $k$-forcing number, denoted $\MOF_k(G)$ ($\mof_k(G)$), which is the largest (smallest) $k$-forcing number among all possible orientations of $G$. These new ideas are compared to known graph invariants and it is shown that, among other things, $\mof(G)$ equals the path covering number of $G$ while $\MOF_k(G)$ is greater than or equal to the independence number of $G$ -- with equality holding if $G$ is a tree or if $k$ is at least the maximum degree of $G$. Along the way, we also show that many recent results about $k$-forcing number can be modified for oriented graphs.
Large monochromatic components and long monochromatic cycles in random hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend results of Gyárfás and Füredi on the largest monochromatic component in $r$-colored complete $k$-uniform hypergraphs to the setting of random hypergraphs. We also study long monochromatic loose cycles in $r$-colored random hypergraphs. In particular, we obtain a random analog of a result of Gyárfás, Sárközy, and Szemerédi on the longest monochromatic loose cycle in $2$-colored complete $k$-uniform hypergraphs.

Support Equalities Among Ribbon Schur Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2007, McNamara proved that two skew shapes can have the same Schur support only if they have the same number of $k\times \ell$ rectangles as subdiagrams. This implies that two ribbons can have the same Schur support only if one is obtained by permuting row lengths of the other. We present substantial progress towards classifying when a permutation $π\in S_m$ of row lengths of a ribbon $α$ produces a ribbon $α_π$ with the same Schur support as $α$; when this occurs for all $π\in S_m$, we say that $α$ has "full equivalence class." Our main results include a sufficient condition for a ribbon $α$ to have full equivalence class. Additionally, we prove a separate necessary condition, which we conjecture to be sufficient.

The third symmetric potency of the circle and the Barnette sphere
We give an elementary (not cut just paste) proof of results of Bott and Shchepin: the space of non-empty subsets of a circle of cardinality at most 3, which is called the third symmetric potency of the circle, is homeomorphic to a 3-sphere and the inclusion of the space of one element subsets is a trefoil knot. Moreover, we give an explicit simplicial decomposition of the third symmetric potency of the circle which is isomorphic to the Barnette sphere.

A Combinatorial Grassmannian Representation of the Magic Three-Qubit Veldkamp Line
Published in Entropy 19/10 (2017) Art. No. 556 • View Publication • BIB
It is demonstrated that the magic three-qubit Veldkamp line occurs naturally within the Veldkamp space of combinatorial Grassmannian of type $G_2(7)$, $\mathcal{V}(G_2(7))$. The lines of the ambient symplectic polar space are those lines of $\mathcal{V}(G_2(7))$ whose cores feature an odd number of points of $G_2(7)$. After introducing basic properties of three different types of points and six distinct types of lines of $\mathcal{V}(G_2(7))$, we explicitly show the combinatorial Grassmannian composition of the magic Veldkamp line; we first give representatives of points and lines of its core generalized quadrangle GQ$(2,2)$, and then additional points and lines of a specific elliptic quadric $\mathcal{Q}^{-}$(5,2), a hyperbolic quadric $\mathcal{Q}^{+}$(5,2) and a quadratic cone $\widehat{\mathcal{Q}}$(4,2) that are centered on the GQ$(2,2)$. In particular, each point of $\mathcal{Q}^{+}$(5,2) is represented by a Pasch configuration and its complementary line, the (Schläfli) double-six of points in $\mathcal{Q}^{-}$(5,2) comprise six Cayley-Salmon configurations and six Desargues configurations with their complementary points, and the remaining Cayley-Salmon configuration stands for the vertex of $\widehat{\mathcal{Q}}$(4,2).

New congruences for broken $k$-diamond partitions
The notion of broken $k$-diamond partitions was introduced by Andrews and Paule. Let $Δ_{k}(n)$ denote the number of broken $k$-diamond partitions of $n$ for a fixed positive integer $k$. In this paper, we establish new infinite families of broken $k$-diamond partition congruences.

Variations on Baur--Marsh's determinant
Baur and Marsh computed the determinant of a matrix assembled from the cluster variables in a cluster algebra of type A. In this article we wish to describe two variations. On the one hand, we compute determinants of matrices assembled from the squares of the cluster variables in Baur--Marsh's matrix. One such determinant admits an interpretation as a Cayley--Menger determinant. On the other hand, we wish to present a formula for the determinant of a matrix of cluster variables in a cluster algebra of type D. This cluster algebra is associated with a marked oriented surface. As in Baur--Marsh's setup the matrix is indexed by the marked points of the surface and an entry is given by the cluster variable corresponding to an arc between two marked points. Our formula asserts that the determinant may again be written as a product of cluster variables.

Fast Algorithm for Enumerating Diagonal Latin Squares of Small Order
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we propose an algorithm for enumerating diagonal Latin squares of small order. It relies on specific properties of diagonal Latin squares to employ symmetry breaking techniques, and on several heuristic optimizations and bit arithmetic techniques to make use of computational power of state-of-the-art CPUs. Using this approach we enumerated diagonal Latin squares of order at most 9, and vertically symmetric diagonal Latin squares of order at most 10.
A Curious Family of Binomial Determinants That Count Rhombus Tilings of a Holey Hexagon
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 166, pp. 352-381, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
We evaluate a curious determinant, first mentioned by George Andrews in 1980 in the context of descending plane partitions. Our strategy is to combine the famous Desnanot-Jacobi-Dodgson identity with automated proof techniques. More precisely, we follow the holonomic ansatz that was proposed by Doron Zeilberger in 2007. We derive a compact and nice formula for Andrews's determinant, and use it to solve a challenge problem that we posed in a previous paper. By noting that Andrews's determinant is a special case of a two-parameter family of determinants, we find closed forms for several one-parameter subfamilies. The interest in these determinants arises because they count cyclically symmetric rhombus tilings of a hexagon with several triangular holes inside.

Additive energy and the metric Poissonian property
Published in Mathematika 64 (2018) 679-700 • View Publication • BIB
Let $A$ be a set of natural numbers. Recent work has suggested a strong link between the additive energy of $A$ (the number of solutions to $a_1 + a_2 = a_3 + a_4$ with $a_i \in A$) and the metric Poissonian property, which is a fine-scale equidistribution property for dilates of $A$ modulo $1$. There appears to be reasonable evidence to speculate a sharp Khintchine-type threshold, that is, to speculate that the metric Poissonian property should be completely determined by whether or not a certain sum of additive energies is convergent or divergent. In this article, we primarily address the convergence theory, in other words the extent to which having a low additive energy forces a set to be metric Poissonian.

Full rainbow matchings in graphs and hypergraphs
Published in Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 30, (2021) 762-780 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph that is properly edge coloured with $m$ colours and let $\M=\{M_1,\ldots, M_m\}$ be the set of $m$ matchings induced by the colours in $G$. Suppose that $m\le n-n^{c}$, where $c>9/10$, and every matching in $\M$ has size $n$. Then $G$ contains a full rainbow matching, i.e.\ a matching that contains exactly one edge from $M_i$ for each $1\le i\le m$. This answers an open problem of Pokrovskiy and gives an affirmative answer to a generalisation of a special case of a conjecture of Aharoni and Berger. Related results are also found for multigraphs with edges of bounded multiplicity, and for hypergraphs. Finally, we provide counterexamples to several conjectures on full rainbow matchings made by Aharoni and Berger.

Uniform generation of random graphs with power-law degree sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a linear-time algorithm that approximately uniformly generates a random simple graph with a power-law degree sequence whose exponent is at least 2.8811. While sampling graphs with power-law degree sequence of exponent at least 3 is fairly easy, and many samplers work efficiently in this case, the problem becomes dramatically more difficult when the exponent drops below 3; ours is the first provably practicable sampler for this case. We also show that with an appropriate rejection scheme, our algorithm can be tuned into an exact uniform sampler. The running time of the exact sampler is O(n^{2.107}) with high probability, and O(n^{4.081}) in expectation.
