The Local Limit of Random Sorting Networks
Published in Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré, Probabilités et Statistiques. Vol. 55. No. 1. Institut Henri Poincaré, 2019. Awarded "best published paper in the journal 2018-19" • View Publication • BIB
A sorting network is a geodesic path from $12 \cdots n$ to $n \cdots 21$ in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ generated by adjacent transpositions. For a uniformly random sorting network, we establish the existence of a local limit of the process of space-time locations of transpositions in a neighbourhood of $an$ for $a\in[0,1]$ as $n\to\infty$. Here time is scaled by a factor of $1/n$ and space is not scaled. The limit is a swap process $U$ on $\mathbb{Z}$. We show that $U$ is stationary and mixing with respect to the spatial shift and has time-stationary increments. Moreover, the only dependence on $a$ is through time scaling by a factor of $\sqrt{a(1-a)}$. To establish the existence of $U$, we find a local limit for staircase-shaped Young tableaux. These Young tableaux are related to sorting networks through a bijection of Edelman and Greene.

Divisible sandpile on Sierpinski gasket graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The divisible sandpile model is a growth model on graphs that was introduced by Levine and Peres as a tool to study internal diffusion limited aggregation. In this work we investigate the shape of the divisible sandpile model on the graphical Sierpinski gasket SG. We show that the shape is a ball in the graph metric of SG. Moreover we give an exact representation of the odometer function of the divisible sandpile.

The Robot Crawler Model on Complete k-Partite and Erdős-Rényi Random Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Web crawlers are used by internet search engines to gather information about the web graph. In this paper we investigate a simple process which models such software by walking around the vertices of a graph. Once initial random vertex weights have been assigned, the robot crawler traverses the graph deterministically following a greedy algorithm, always visiting the neighbour of least weight and then updating this weight to be the highest overall. We consider the maximum, minimum and average number of steps taken by the crawler to visit every vertex of firstly, complete k-partite graphs and secondly, sparse Erdős-Rényi random graphs. Our work follows on from a paper of Bonato et. al. who introduced the model.

Asymptotic enumeration of graphs by degree sequence, and the degree sequence of a random graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we relate a fundamental parameter of a random graph, its degree sequence, to a simple model of nearly independent binomial random variables. This confirms a conjecture made in 1997. As a result, many interesting functions of the joint distribution of graph degrees, such as the distribution of the median degree, become amenable to estimation. Our result is established by proving an asymptotic formula conjectured in 1990 for the number of graphs with given degree sequence. In particular, this gives an asymptotic formula for the number of $d$-regular graphs for all $d$, as $n\to\infty$.

Approximate Convex Hulls: sketching the convex hull using curvature
Convex hulls are fundamental objects in computational geometry. In moderate dimensions or for large numbers of vertices, computing the convex hull can be impractical due to the computational complexity of convex hull algorithms. In this article we approximate the convex hull in using a scalable algorithm which finds high curvature vertices with high probability. The algorithm is particularly effective for approximating convex hulls which have a relatively small number of extreme points.

Maximum Size of a Family of Pairwise Graph-Different Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two permutations of the vertices of a graph $G$ are called $G$-different if there exists an index $i$ such that $i$-th entry of the two permutations form an edge in $G$. We bound or determine the maximum size of a family of pairwise $G$-different permutations for various graphs $G$. We show that for all balanced bipartite graphs $G$ of order $n$ with minimum degree $n/2 - o(n)$, the maximum number of pairwise $G$-different permutations of the vertices of $G$ is $2^{(1-o(1))n}$. We also present examples of bipartite graphs $G$ with maximum degree $O(\log n)$ that have this property. We explore the problem of bounding the maximum size of a family of pairwise graph-different permutations when an unlimited number of disjoint vertices is added to a given graph. We determine this exact value for the graph of 2 disjoint edges, and present some asymptotic bounds relating to this value for graphs consisting of the union of $n/2$ disjoint edges.

Strong rainbow connection numbers of toroidal meshes

In 2011, Li et al. \cite{LLL} obtained an upper bound of the strong rainbow connection number of an $r$-dimensional undirected toroidal mesh. In this paper, this bound is improved. As a result, we give a negative answer to their problem.

Weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, Rota-Baxter algebras and Hopf algebras
Published in Adv Math. 344 (2019), 1-34 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions with semigroup exponents generalizing the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions. As a special case we obtain the Hopf algebra WCQSym of weak composition quasi-symmetric functions, which provides a framework for the study of a question proposed by G.-C.~Rota relating symmetric type functions and Rota-Baxter algebras. We provide the transformation formulas between the weak composition monomial and fundamental quasi-symmetric functions, which extends the corresponding results for quasi-symmetric functions. Moreover, we show that QSym is a Hopf subalgebra and a Hopf quotient algebra of WCQSym. Rota's question is addressed by identifying WCQsym with the free commutative unitary Rota-Baxter algebra of weight 1 on one generator, which also allows us to equip this algebra with a Hopf algebra structure.

Cutoff for Ramanujan graphs via degree inflation
Published in Electron. Commun. Probab. Volume 22 (2017), paper no. 45, 10 pp • View Publication • BIB
Recently Lubetzky and Peres showed that simple random walks on a sequence of $d$-regular Ramanujan graphs $G_n=(V_n,E_n)$ of increasing sizes exhibit cutoff in total variation around the diameter lower bound $\frac{d}{d-2}\log_{d-1}|V_n| $. We provide a different argument under the assumption that for some $r(n) \gg 1$ the maximal number of simple cycles in a ball of radius $r(n)$ in $G_n$ is uniformly bounded in $n$.
Recursions associated to trapezoid, symmetric and rotation symmetric functions over Galois fields
Published in Discrete Mathematics 341 (2018) 1915-1931 • View Publication • BIB
Rotation symmetric Boolean functions are invariant under circular translation of indices. These functions have very rich cryptographic properties and have been used in different cryptosystems. Recently, Thomas Cusick proved that exponential sums of rotation symmetric Boolean functions satisfy homogeneous linear recurrences with integer coefficients. In this work, a generalization of this result is proved over any Galois field. That is, exponential sums over Galois fields of rotation symmetric polynomials satisfy linear recurrences with integer coefficients. In the particular case of $\mathbb{F}_2$, an elementary method is used to obtain explicit recurrences for exponential sums of some of these functions. The concept of trapezoid Boolean function is also introduced and it is showed that the linear recurrences that exponential sums of trapezoid Boolean functions satisfy are the same as the ones satisfied by exponential sums of the corresponding rotations symmetric Boolean functions. Finally, it is proved that exponential sums of trapezoid and symmetric polynomials also satisfy linear recurrences with integer coefficients over any Galois field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Moreover, the Discrete Fourier Transform matrix and some Complex Hadamard matrices appear as examples in some of our explicit formulas of these recurrences.

We prove the total positivity of the Narayana triangles of type $A$ and type $B$, and thus affirmatively confirm a conjecture of Chen, Liang and Wang and a conjecture of Pan and Zeng. We also prove the strict total positivity of the Narayana squares of type $A$ and type $B$.

Constructing Adjacency Arrays from Incidence Arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
Graph construction, a fundamental operation in a data processing pipeline, is typically done by multiplying the incidence array representations of a graph, $\mathbf{E}_\mathrm{in}$ and $\mathbf{E}_\mathrm{out}$, to produce an adjacency array of the graph, $\mathbf{A}$, that can be processed with a variety of algorithms. This paper provides the mathematical criteria to determine if the product $\mathbf{A} = \mathbf{E}^{\sf T}_\mathrm{out}\mathbf{E}_\mathrm{in}$ will have the required structure of the adjacency array of the graph. The values in the resulting adjacency array are determined by the corresponding addition $\oplus$ and multiplication $\otimes$ operations used to perform the array multiplication. Illustrations of the various results possible from different $\oplus$ and $\otimes$ operations are provided using a small collection of popular music metadata.

Chi-boundedness of graph classes excluding wheel vertex-minors
Published in J Combin. Theory, Ser. B, 135(2019), pp. 319-348 • View Publication • BIB
A class of graphs is $χ$-bounded if there exists a function $f:\mathbb N\rightarrow \mathbb N$ such that for every graph $G$ in the class and an induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, if $H$ has no clique of size $q+1$, then the chromatic number of $H$ is less than or equal to $f(q)$. We denote by $W_n$ the wheel graph on $n+1$ vertices. We show that the class of graphs having no vertex-minor isomorphic to $W_n$ is $χ$-bounded. This generalizes several previous results; $χ$-boundedness for circle graphs, for graphs having no $W_5$ vertex-minors, and for graphs having no fan vertex-minors.

Zero sum partition into sets of the same order and its applications
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25(1) (2018), #P1.20 • View Publication • BIB
We will say that an Abelian group $Γ$ of order $n$ has the $m$-\emph{zero-sum-partition property} ($m$-\textit{ZSP-property}) if $m$ divides $n$, $m\geq 2$ and there is a partition of $Γ$ into pairwise disjoint subsets $A_1, A_2,\ldots , A_t$, such that $|A_i| = m$ and $\sum_{a\in A_i}a = g_0$ for $1 \leq i \leq t$, where $g_0$ is the identity element of $Γ$. In this paper we study the $m$-ZSP property of $Γ$. We show that $Γ$ has $m$-ZSP if and only if $|Γ|$ is odd or $m\geq 3$ and $Γ$ has more than one involution. We will apply the results to the study of group distance magic graphs as well as to generalized Kotzig arrays.

Random sorting networks: local statistics via random matrix laws
Published in Probability Theory and Related Fields 175 (2019), 45-96 • View Publication • BIB
This paper finds the bulk local limit of the swap process of uniformly random sorting networks. The limit object is defined through a deterministic procedure, a local version of the Edelman-Greene algorithm, applied to a two dimensional determinantal point process with explicit kernel. The latter describes the asymptotic joint law near $0$ of the eigenvalues of the corners in the antisymmetric Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In particular, the limiting law of the first time a given swap appears in a random sorting network is identified with the limiting distribution of the closest to $0$ eigenvalue in the antisymmetric GUE. Moreover, the asymptotic gap, in the bulk, between appearances of a given swap is the Gaudin-Mehta law -- the limiting universal distribution for gaps between eigenvalues of real symmetric random matrices. The proofs rely on the determinantal structure and a double contour integral representation for the kernel of random Poissonized Young tableaux of arbitrary shape.
Upper bounds on the smallest size of a saturating set in projective planes and spaces of even dimension
In a projective plane $Π_{q}$ (not necessarily Desarguesian) of order $q$, a point subset $\mathcal{S}$ is saturating (or dense) if any point of $Π_{q}\setminus \mathcal{S}$ is collinear with two points in $\mathcal{S}$. Modifying an approach of [31], we proved the following upper bound on the smallest size $s(2,q)$ of a saturating set in $Π_{q}$: \begin{equation*} s(2,q)\leq \sqrt{(q+1)\left(3\ln q+\ln\ln q +\ln\frac{3}{4}\right)}+\sqrt{\frac{q}{3\ln q}}+3. \end{equation*} The bound holds for all q, not necessarily large. By using inductive constructions, upper bounds on the smallest size of a saturating set in the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(N,q)$ with even dimension $N$ are obtained. All the results are also stated in terms of linear covering codes.

New $2$-designs from strong difference families
Published • View Publication • BIB
Strong difference families are an interesting class of discrete structures which can be used to derive relative difference families. Relative difference families are closely related to $2$-designs, and have applications in constructions for many significant codes, such as optical orthogonal codes and optical orthogonal signature pattern codes. In this paper, with a careful use of cyclotomic conditions attached to strong difference families, we improve the lower bound on the asymptotic existence results of $(\mathbb{F}_{p}\times \mathbb{F}_{q},\mathbb{F}_{p}\times \{0\},k,λ)$-DFs for $k\in\{p,p+1\}$. We improve Buratti's existence results for $2$-$(13q,13,λ)$ designs and $2$-$(17q,17,λ)$ designs, and establish the existence of seven new $2$-$(v,k,λ)$ designs for $(v,k,λ)\in\{(694,7,2),(1576,8,1),(2025,9,1),(765,9,2),(1845,9,2),(459,9,4)$, $(783,9,4)\}$.
Plane graphs without 4- and 5-cycles and without ext-triangular 7-cycles are 3-colorable
Published • View Publication • BIB
Listed as No. 53 among the one hundred famous unsolved problems in [J. A. Bondy, U. S. R. Murty, Graph Theory, Springer, Berlin, 2008] is Steinberg's conjecture, which states that every planar graph without 4- and 5-cycles is 3-colorable. In this paper, we show that plane graphs without 4- and 5-cycles are 3-colorable if they have no ext-triangular 7-cycles. This implies that (1) planar graphs without 4-, 5-, 7-cycles are 3-colorable, and (2) planar graphs without 4-, 5-, 8-cycles are 3-colorable, which cover a number of known results in the literature motivated by Steinberg's conjecture.

Remarks on planar edge-chromatic critical graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 200 (2016) 200-202 • View Publication • BIB
The only open case of Vizing's conjecture that every planar graph with $Δ\geq 6$ is a class 1 graph is $Δ= 6$. We give a short proof of the following statement: there is no 6-critical plane graph $G$, such that every vertex of $G$ is incident to at most three 3-faces. A stronger statement without restriction to critical graphs is stated in \cite{Wang_Xu_2013}. However, the proof given there works only for critical graphs. Furthermore, we show that every 5-critical plane graph has a 3-face which is adjacent to a $k$-face $(k\in \{3,4\})$. For $Δ= 5$ our result gives insights into the structure of planar $5$-critical graphs, and the result for $Δ=6$ gives support for the truth of Vizing's planar graph conjecture.

$k$-clean monomial ideals
In this paper, we introduce the concept of $k$-clean monomial ideals as an extension of clean monomial ideals and present some homological and combinatorial properties of them. Using the hierarchal structure of $k$-clean ideals, we show that a $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is $k$-decomposable if and only if its Stanley-Reisner ideal is $k$-clean, where $k\leq d-1$. We prove that the classes of monomial ideals like monomial complete intersection ideals, Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals of codimension 2 and symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals of matroid complexes are $k$-clean for all $k\geq 0$.
