Novel Algorithms for Sampling Abstract Simplicial Complexes
We provide dual algorithms for sampling the space of abstract simplicial complexes on a fixed number of vertices. We develop a generative and descriptive sampler designed with heuristics to help balance the combinatorial multiplicities of the states and more widely sample across the space of nonisomorphic complexes. We provide a formula for the exact probabilities with which this algorithm will produce a requested labeled state, and compare with an existing benchmark. We also design a highly conductive local ergodic random walk with known transition probabilities. We characterize the autocorrelation of the walk, and numerically test it against our sampler to illustrate its efficacy.
Characterising CCA Sylow cyclic groups whose order is not divisible by four

A Cayley graph on a group $G$ has a natural edge-colouring. We say that such a graph is CCA if every automorphism of the graph that preserves this edge-colouring is an element of the normaliser of the regular representation of $G$. A group $G$ is then said to be CCA if every Cayley graph on $G$ is CCA.
Our main result is a characterisation of non-CCA graphs on groups that are Sylow cyclic and whose order is not divisible by four. We also provide several new constructions of non-CCA graphs.
Gamma-positivity of variations of Eulerian polynomials

An identity of Chung, Graham and Knuth involving binomial coefficients and Eulerian numbers motivates our study of a class of polynomials that we call binomial-Eulerian polynomials. These polynomials share several properties with the Eulerian polynomials. For one thing, they are $h$-polynomials of simplicial polytopes, which gives a geometric interpretation of the fact that they are palindromic and unimodal. A formula of Foata and Schützenberger shows that the Eulerian polynomials have a stronger property, namely $γ$-positivity, and a formula of Postnikov, Reiner and Williams does the same for the binomial-Eulerian polynomials. We obtain $q$-analogs of both the Foata-Schützenberger formula and an alternative to the Postnikov-Reiner-Williams formula, and we show that these $q$-analogs are specializations of analogous symmetric function identities. Algebro-geometric interpretations of these symmetric function analogs are presented.
Residues modulo powers of two in the Young-Fibonacci lattice
We study the subgraph of the Young-Fibonacci graph induced by elements with odd $f$-statistic (the $f$-statistic of an element $w$ of a differential graded poset is the number of saturated chains from the minimal element of the poset to $w$). We show that this subgraph is a binary tree. Moreover, the odd residues of the $f$-statistics in a row of this tree equidistibute modulo any power two. This is equivalent to a purely number theoretic result about the equidistribution of residues modulo powers of two among the products of distinct odd numbers less than a fixed number.
Connected zero forcing sets and connected propagation time of graphs
The zero forcing number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a set $S$ with colored (black) vertices which forces the set $V(G)$ to be colored (black) after some times. "color change rule": a white vertex is changed to a black vertex when it is the only white neighbor of a black vertex. In this case, we say that the black vertex forces the white vertex. We investigate here the concept of connected zero forcing set and connected zero forcing number. We discusses this subject for special graphs and some products of graphs. Also we introduce the connected propagation time. Graphs with extreme minimum connected propagation times and maximum propagation times $|G|-1$ and $|G|-2$ are characterized.

The protection number of a plane tree is the minimal distance of the root to a leaf; this definition carries over to an arbitrary node in a plane tree by considering the maximal subtree having this node as a root. We study the the protection number of a uniformly chosen random tree of size $n$ and also the protection number of a uniformly chosen node in a uniformly chosen random tree of size $n$. The method is to apply singularity analysis to appropriate generating functions. Additional results are provided as well.
Parameterized Shifted Combinatorial Optimization

Shifted combinatorial optimization is a new nonlinear optimization framework which is a broad extension of standard combinatorial optimization, involving the choice of several feasible solutions at a time. This framework captures well studied and diverse problems ranging from so-called vulnerability problems to sharing and partitioning problems. In particular, every standard combinatorial optimization problem has its shifted counterpart, which is typically much harder. Already with explicitly given input set the shifted problem may be NP-hard. In this article we initiate a study of the parameterized complexity of this framework. First we show that shifting over an explicitly given set with its cardinality as the parameter may be in XP, FPT or P, depending on the objective function. Second, we study the shifted problem over sets definable in MSO logic (which includes, e.g., the well known MSO partitioning problems). Our main results here are that shifted combinatorial optimization over MSO definable sets is in XP with respect to the MSO formula and the treewidth (or more generally clique-width) of the input graph, and is W[1]-hard even under further severe restrictions.

A T-net of order $m$ is a graph with $m$ nodes and $2m$ directed edges, where every node has indegree and outdegree equal to $2$. (A well known example of T-nets are de Bruijn graphs.) Given a T-net $N$ of order $m$, there is the so called "doubling" process that creates a T-net $N^*$ from $N$ with $2m$ nodes and $4m$ edges. Let $|X|$ denote the number of Eulerian cycles in a graph $X$. It is known that $| N^*|=2^{m-1}|N|$. In this paper we present a new proof of this identity. Moreover we prove that $|N|\leq 2^{m-1}$. Let $Θ(X)$ denote the set of all Eulerian cycles in a graph $X$ and $S(n)$ the set of all binary sequences of length $n$. Exploiting the new proof we construct a bijection $Θ(N)\times S(m-1)\rightarrow Θ(N^*)$, which allows us to solve one of Stanley's open questions: we find a bijection between de Bruijn sequences of order $n$ and $S(2^{n-1})$.
Convex Neural Codes in Dimension 1
Neural codes are collections of binary strings motivated by patterns of neural activity. In this paper, we study algorithmic and enumerative aspects of convex neural codes in dimension 1 (i.e. on a line or a circle). We use the theory of consecutive-ones matrices to obtain some structural and algorithmic results; we use generating functions to obtain enumerative results.

The resolutions and maximal sets of compatible resolutions of all 2-(120,8,1) designs arising frommaximal (120,8)-arcs in the known projective planes of order 16 are computed. It is shown that each of these designs is embeddable in a unique way in a projective plane of order 16.

We study the branching tree of the perimeters of the nested loops in critical $O(n)$ model for $n \in (0,2)$ on random quadrangulations. We prove that after renormalization it converges towards an explicit continuous multiplicative cascade whose offspring distribution $(x_i)_{i \ge 1}$ is related to the jumps of a spectrally positive $α$-stable Lévy process with $α= \frac{3}{2} \pm \frac{1}π \arccos(n/2)$ and for which we have the surprisingly simple and explicit transform $$ \mathbb E\left[\sum_{i \ge 1} (x_i)^θ\right] = \frac{\sin(π(2-α))}{\sin (π(θ- α))} \quad \mbox{for }θ\in (α, α+1).$$ An important ingredient in the proof is a new formula of independent interest on first moments of additive functionals of the jumps of a left-continuous random walk stopped at a hitting time. We also identify the scaling limit of the volume of the critical $O(n)$-decorated quadrangulation using the Malthusian martingale associated to the continuous multiplicative cascade.

We compute an explicit $e$-positive formula for the chromatic symmetric function of a lollipop graph, $L_{m,n}$. From here we deduce that there exist countably infinite distinct $e$-positive, and hence Schur-positive, bases of the algebra of symmetric functions whose generators are chromatic symmetric functions. Finally, we resolve 6 conjectures on the chromatic symmetric function of a lariat graph, $L_{n+3}$.
Pretty good state transfer in graphs with an involution

We study pretty good quantum state transfer (i.e., state transfer that becomes arbitrarily close to perfect) between vertices of graphs with an involution in the presence of an energy potential. In particular, we show that if a graph has an involution that fixes at least one vertex or at least one edge, then there exists a choice of potential on the vertex set of the graph for which we get pretty good state transfer between symmetric vertices of the graph. We show further that in many cases, the potential can be chosen so that it is only non-zero at the vertices between which we want pretty good state transfer. As a special case of this, we show that such a potential can be chosen on the endpoints of a path to induce pretty good state transfer in paths of any length. This is in contrast to the result of [6], in which the authors show that there cannot be perfect state transfer in paths of length 4 or more, no matter what potential is chosen.

Let $G$ be a graph, let $k$ be a positive integer, and let $p:V(G)\rightarrow Z_k$ be a mapping with $|E(G)| \stackrel{k}{\equiv}\sum_{v\in V(G)}p(v) $. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is $(3k-3)$-edge-connected, then it has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $|d^+_G(v)-d_G(v)/2| < k$; also if $G$ contains $2k-2$ edge-disjoint spanning trees, then it admits such an orientation but by imposing greater out-degree bounds.
QRT maps and related Laurent systems

In recent work it was shown how recursive factorisation of certain QRT maps leads to Somos-4 and Somos-5 recurrences with periodic coefficients, and to a fifth-order recurrence with the Laurent property. Here we recursively factorise the 12-parameter symmetric QRT map, given by a second-order recurrence, to obtain a system of three coupled recurrences which possesses the Laurent property. As degenerate special cases, we first derive systems of two coupled recurrences corresponding to the 5-parameter multiplicative and additive symmetric QRT maps. In all cases, the Laurent property is established using a generalisation of a result due to Hickerson, and exact formulae for degree growth are found from ultradiscrete (tropical) analogues of the recurrences. For the general 18-parameter QRT map it is shown that the components of the iterates can be written as a ratio of quantities that satisfy the same Somos-7 recurrence.
A $(5,5)$-coloring of $K_n$ with few colors
For fixed integers $p$ and $q$, let $f(n,p,q)$ denote the minimum number of colors needed to color all of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ such that no clique of $p$ vertices spans fewer than $q$ distinct colors. Any edge-coloring with this property is known as a $(p,q)$-coloring. We construct an explicit $(5,5)$-coloring that shows that $f(n,5,5) \leq n^{1/3 + o(1)}$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. This improves upon the best known probabilistic upper bound of $O\left(n^{1/2}\right)$ given by Erdős and Gyárfás, and comes close to matching the best known lower bound $Ω\left(n^{1/3}\right)$.
Intrinsically Knotted and 4-Linked Directed Graphs

We consider intrinsic linking and knotting in the context of directed graphs. We construct an example of a directed graph that contains a consistently oriented knotted cycle in every embedding. We also construct examples of intrinsically 3-linked and 4-linked directed graphs. We introduce two operations, consistent edge contraction and H-cyclic subcontraction, as special cases of minors for digraphs, and show that the property of having a linkless embedding is closed under these operations. We analyze the relationship between the number of distinct knots and links in an undirected graph $G$ and its corresponding symmetric digraph $\overline{DG}$. Finally, we note that the maximum number of edges for a graph that is not intrinsically linked is $O(n)$ in the undirected case, but $O(n^2)$ for directed graphs.
Unavoidable subprojections in union-closed set systems of infinite breadth

We consider union-closed set systems with infinite breadth, focusing on three particular configurations ${\mathcal T}_{\rm max}(E)$, ${\mathcal T}_{\rm min}(E)$ and ${\mathcal T}_{\rm ort}(E)$. We show that these three configurations are not isolated examples; in any given union-closed set system of infinite breadth, at least one of these three configurations will occur as a subprojection. This characterizes those union-closed set systems which have infinite breadth, and is the first general structural result for such set systems.

A basic combinatorial invariant of a convex polytope $P$ is its $f$-vector $f(P)=(f_0,f_1,\dots,f_{\dim P-1})$, where $f_i$ is the number of $i$-dimensional faces of $P$. Steinitz characterized all possible $f$-vectors of $3$-polytopes and Grünbaum characterized the pairs given by the first two entries of the $f$-vectors of $4$-polytopes. In this paper, we characterize the pairs given by the first two entries of the $f$-vectors of $5$-polytopes. The same result was also proved by Pineda-Villavicencio, Ugon and Yost independently.
