We study the relationship between tropical and classical Hurwitz moduli spaces. Following recent work of Abramovich, Caporaso and Payne, we outline a tropicalization for the moduli space of generalized Hurwitz covers of an arbitrary genus curve. Our approach is to appeal to the geometry of admissible covers, which compactify the Hurwitz scheme. We define and construct a moduli space of tropical admissible covers, and study its relationship with the skeleton of the Berkovich analytification of the classical space of admissible covers. We use techniques from non-archimedean geometry to show that the tropical and classical tautological maps are compatible via tropicalization, and that the degree of the classical branch map can be recovered from the tropical side. As a consequence, we obtain a proof, at the level of moduli spaces, of the equality of classical and tropical Hurwitz numbers.

A cross-bifix-free set of words is a set in which no prefix of any length of any word is the suffix of any other word in the set. A construction of cross-bifix-free sets has recently been proposed by Chee {\it et al.} in 2013 within a constant factor of optimality. We propose a \emph{trace partitioned} Gray code for these cross-bifix-free sets and a CAT algorithm generating it.
Tropical schemes, tropical cycles, and valuated matroids

We show that the weights on a tropical variety can be recovered from the tropical scheme structure proposed by the Giansiracusas in arXiv:1308.0042, so there is a well-defined Hilbert-Chow morphism from a tropical scheme to the underlying tropical cycle. For a subscheme of projective space given by a homogeneous ideal I we show that this tropical scheme structure contains the same information as the set of valuated matroids of the vector spaces I_d for d \geq 0. We also give a combinatorial criterion to determine whether a given relation is in the congruence defining the tropical scheme structure.

A cube tiling of $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a family of pairwise disjoint cubes $[0,1)^d+T=\{[0,1)^d+t:t\in T\}$ such that $\bigcup_{t\in T}([0,1)^d+t)=\mathbb{R}^d$. Two cubes $[0,1)^d+t$, $[0,1)^d+s$ are called a twin pair if $|t_j-s_j|=1$ for some $j\in [d]=\{1,\ldots, d\}$ and $t_i=s_i$ for every $i\in [d]\setminus \{j\}$. In $1930$, Keller conjectured that in every cube tiling of $\mathbb{R}^d$ there is a twin pair. Keller's conjecture is true for dimensions $d\leq 6$ and false for all dimensions $d\geq 8$. For $d=7$ the conjecture is still open. Let $x\in \mathbb{R}^d$, $i\in [d]$, and let $L(T,x,i)$ be the set of all $i$th coordinates $t_i$ of vectors $t\in T$ such that $([0,1)^d+t)\cap ([0,1]^d+x)\neq \emptyset$ and $t_i\leq x_i$. It is known that if $|L(T,x,i)|\leq 2$ for some $x\in \mathbb{R}^7$ and every $i\in [7]$ or $|L(T,x,i)|\geq 6$ for some $x\in \mathbb{R}^7$ and $i\in [7]$, then Keller's conjecture is true for $d=7$. In the present paper we show that it is also true for $d=7$ if $|L(T,x,i)|=5$ for some $x\in \mathbb{R}^7$ and $i\in [7]$. Thus, if there is a counterexample to Keller's conjecture in dimension seven, then $|L(T,x,i)|\in \{3,4\}$ for some $x\in \mathbb{R}^7$ and $i\in [7]$.
Random-bit optimal uniform sampling for rooted planar trees with given sequence of degrees and Applications

In this paper, we redesign and simplify an algorithm due to Remy et al. for the generation of rooted planar trees that satisfies a given partition of degrees. This new version is now optimal in terms of random bit complexity, up to a multiplicative constant. We then apply a natural process "simulate-guess-and-proof" to analyze the height of a random Motzkin in function of its frequency of unary nodes. When the number of unary nodes dominates, we prove some unconventional height phenomenon (i.e. outside the universal square root behaviour.)
Infinite graphs that do not contain cycles of length four
We construct a countable infinite graph G that does not contain cycles of length four having the property that the sequence of graphs $G_n$ induced by the first $n$ vertices has minimum degree $δ(G_n)> n^{\sqrt{2}-1+o(1)}$.
Super edge-magic deficiency of join-product graphs
A graph $G$ is called \textit{super edge-magic} if there exists a bijective function $f$ from $V(G) \cup E(G)$ to $\{1, 2, \ldots, |V(G) \cup E(G)|\}$ such that $f(V(G)) = \{1, 2, \ldots, |V(G)|\}$ and $f(x) + f(xy) + f(y)$ is a constant $k$ for every edge $xy$ of $G$. Furthermore, the \textit{super edge-magic deficiency} of a graph $G$ is either the minimum nonnegative integer $n$ such that $G \cup nK_1$ is super edge-magic or $+\infty$ if there exists no such integer.
\emph{Join product} of two graphs is their graph union with additional edges that connect all vertices of the first graph to each vertex of the second graph. In this paper, we study the super edge-magic deficiencies of a wheel minus an edge and join products of a path, a star, and a cycle, respectively, with isolated vertices.
Strong edge-colouring of sparse planar graphs

A strong edge-colouring of a graph is a proper edge-colouring where each colour class induces a matching. It is known that every planar graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has a strong edge-colouring with at most $4Δ+4$ colours. We show that $3Δ+1$ colours suffice if the graph has girth 6, and $4Δ$ colours suffice if $Δ\geq 7$ or the girth is at least 5. In the last part of the paper, we raise some questions related to a long-standing conjecture of Vizing on proper edge-colouring of planar graphs.

We develop a general theory of Markov chains realizable as random walks on $\mathscr R$-trivial monoids. It provides explicit and simple formulas for the eigenvalues of the transition matrix, for multiplicities of the eigenvalues via Möbius inversion along a lattice, a condition for diagonalizability of the transition matrix and some techniques for bounding the mixing time. In addition, we discuss several examples, such as Toom-Tsetlin models, an exchange walk for finite Coxeter groups, as well as examples previously studied by the authors, such as nonabelian sandpile models and the promotion Markov chain on posets. Many of these examples can be viewed as random walks on quotients of free tree monoids, a new class of monoids whose combinatorics we develop.

It is shown that the maximal size of a $2$-arc in the projective Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$ is $21$, and the $(21,2)$-arc is unique up to isomorphism. Furthermore, all maximal $(20,2)$-arcs in the affine Hjelmslev plane over $\mathbb{Z}_{25}$ are classified up to isomorphism.

We consider point sets in the $m$-dimensional affine space $\mathbb{F}_q^m$ where each squared Euclidean distance of two points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that the situation in $\mathbb{F}_q^m$ is rather similar to the one of integral distances in Euclidean spaces. Therefore we expect the results over finite fields to be useful for the Euclidean case.
We completely determine the automorphism group of these spaces which preserves integral distances. For some small parameters $m$ and $q$ we determine the maximum cardinality $\mathcal{I}(m,q)$ of integral point sets in $\mathbb{F}_q^m$. We provide upper bounds and lower bounds on $\mathcal{I}(m,q)$. If we map integral distances to edges in a graph, we can define a graph $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q^m$. It turns out that $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ is strongly regular for some cases.

We consider 3-regular planar matchstick graphs, i.e. those which have a planar embedding such that all edge lengths are equal, with given girth g. For girth 3 it is known that such graphs exist if and only if the number of vertices n is an even integer larger or equal to 8. Here we prove that such graphs exist for girth g=4 if and only if n is even and at least 20. We provide an example for girth g=5 consisting of 180 vertices.

A graph G=(V,E) is called a unit-distance graph in the plane if there is an injective embedding of V in the plane such that every pair of adjacent vertices are at unit distance apart. If additionally the corresponding edges are non-crossing and all vertices have the same degree r we talk of a regular matchstick graph. Due to Euler's polyhedron formula we have $r\le 5$. The smallest known 4-regular matchstick graph is the so called Harborth graph consisting of 52 vertices. In this article we prove that no finite 5-regular matchstick graph exists and provide a lower bound for the number of vertices of 4-regular matchstick graphs.

On the threshold for the Maker-Breaker $H$-game

We study the Maker-Breaker $H$-game played on the edge set of the random graph $G_{n,p}$. In this game two players, Maker and Breaker, alternately claim unclaimed edges of $G_{n,p}$, until all the edges are claimed. Maker wins if he claims all the edges of a copy of a fixed graph $H$; Breaker wins otherwise. In this paper we show that, with the exception of trees and triangles, the threshold for an $H$-game is given by the threshold of the corresponding Ramsey property of $G_{n,p}$ with respect to the graph $H$.
Diffuse Scattering on Graphs

We formulate and analyze difference equations on graphs analogous to time-independent diffusion equations arising in the study of diffuse scattering in continuous media. Moreover, we show how to construct solutions in the presence of weak scatterers from the solution to the homogeneous (background problem) using Born series, providing necessary conditions for convergence and demonstrating the process through numerous examples. In addition, we outline a method for finding Green's functions for Cayley graphs for both abelian and non-abelian groups. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the effects of sparsity on our method and results, outlining the simplifications that can be made provided that the scatterers are weak and well-separated.
