In this paper we consider the enumeration of binary trees avoiding non-contiguous binary tree patterns. We begin by computing closed formulas for the number of trees avoiding a single binary tree pattern with 4 or fewer leaves and compare these results to analogous work for contiguous tree patterns. Next, we give an explicit generating function that counts binary trees avoiding a single non-contiguous tree pattern according to number of leaves. In addition, we enumerate binary trees that simultaneously avoid more than one tree pattern. Finally, we explore connections between pattern-avoiding trees and pattern-avoiding permutations.

We identify the ring of odd symmetric functions introduced by Ellis and Khovanov as the space of skew polynomials fixed by a natural action of the Hecke algebra at q=-1. This allows us to define graded modules over the Hecke algebra at q=-1 that are `odd' analogs of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties. The graded module associated to the full flag variety corresponds to the quotient of the skew polynomial ring by the left ideal of nonconstant odd symmetric functions. The top degree component of the odd cohomology of Springer varieties is identified with the corresponding Specht module of the Hecke algebra at q=-1.
Perturbation of transportation polytopes

We describe a perturbation method that can be used to reduce the problem of finding the multivariate generating function (MGF) of a non-simple polytope to computing the MGF of simple polytopes. We then construct a perturbation that works for any transportation polytope. We apply this perturbation to the family of central transportation polytopes of order kn x n, and obtain formulas for the MGFs of the feasible cone of each vertex of the polytope and the MGF of the polytope. The formulas we obtain are enumerated by combinatorial objects. A special case of the formulas recovers the results on Birkhoff polytopes given by the author and De Loera and Yoshida. We also recover the formula for the number of maximum vertices of transportation polytopes of order kn x n.
Vertex Splitting and Upper Embeddable Graphs
The weak minor G of a graph G is the graph obtained from G by a sequence of edge-contraction operations on G. A weak-minor-closed family of upper embeddable graphs is a set G of upper embeddable graphs that for each graph G in G, every weak minor of G is also in G. Up to now, there are few results providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for characterizing upper embeddability of graphs. In this paper, we studied the relation between the vertex splitting operation and the upper embeddability of graphs; provided not only a necessary and sufficient condition for characterizing upper embeddability of graphs, but also a way to construct weak-minor-closed family of upper embeddable graphs from the bouquet of circles; extended a result in J: Graph Theory obtained by L. Nebesk¶y. In addition, the algorithm complex of determining the upper embeddability of a graph can be reduced much by the results obtained in this paper.
Joint-tree model and the maximum genus of graphs
The vertex v of a graph G is called a 1-critical-vertex for the maximum genus of the graph, or for simplicity called 1-critical-vertex, if G-v is a connected graph and °M(G - v) = °M(G) - 1. In this paper, through the joint-tree model, we obtained some types of 1-critical-vertex, and get the upper embeddability of the Spiral Snm .
Lower bound on the number of the maximum genus embedding of $K_{n,n}$
In this paper, we provide an method to obtain the lower bound on the number of the distinct maximum genus embedding of the complete bipartite graph Kn;n (n be an odd number), which, in some sense, improves the results of S. Stahl and H. Ren.
The extremal genus embedding of graphs
Let Wn be a wheel graph with n spokes. How does the genus change if adding a degree-3 vertex v, which is not in V (Wn), to the graph Wn? In this paper, through the joint-tree model we obtain that the genus of Wn+v equals 0 if the three neighbors of v are in the same face boundary of P(Wn); otherwise, °(Wn + v) = 1, where P(Wn) is the unique planar embedding of Wn. In addition, via the independent set, we provide a lower bound on the maximum genus of graphs, which may be better than both the result of D. Li & Y. Liu and the result of Z. Ouyang etc: in Europ. J. Combinatorics. Furthermore, we obtain a relation between the independence number and the maximum genus of graphs, and provide an algorithm to obtain the lower bound on the number of the distinct maximum genus embedding of the complete graph Km, which, in some sense, improves the result of Y. Caro and S. Stahl respectively.

Vertigan has shown that if $M$ is a binary matroid, then $|T_M(-ι,ι)|$, the modulus of the Tutte polynomial of $M$ as evaluated in $(-ι, ι)$, can be expressed in terms of the bicycle dimension of $M$. In this paper, we describe how the argument of the complex number $T_M(-ι,ι)$ depends on a certain $\zfour$-valued quadratic form that is canonically associated with $M$. We show how to evaluate $T_M(-ι,ι)$ in polynomial time, as well as the canonical tripartition of $M$ and further related invariants.

We use the theory of lexicographic shellability to provide various examples in which the rank of the homology of a Rees product of two partially ordered sets enumerates some set of combinatorial objects, perhaps according to some natural statistic on the set. Many of these examples generalize a result of J. Jonsson, which says that the rank of the unique nontrivial homology group of the Rees product of a truncated Boolean algebra of degree $n$ and a chain of length $n-1$ is the number of derangements in $§_n$.\

We prove that linearizing certain families of polynomial optimization problems leads to new functorial operations in real convex sets. We show that under some conditions these operations can be computed or approximated in ways amenable to efficient computation. These operations are convex analogues of Hom functors, tensor products, symmetric powers, exterior powers and general Schur functors on vector spaces and lead to novel constructions even for polyhedra.

A Planarity Criterion for Graphs
It is proven that a connected graph is planar if and only if all its cocycles with at least four edges are "grounded" in the graph. The notion of grounding of this planarity criterion, which is purely combinatorial, stems from the intuitive idea that with planarity there should be a linear ordering of the edges of a cocycle such that in the two subgraphs remaining after the removal of these edges there can be no crossing of disjoint paths that join the vertices of these edges. The proof given in the paper of the right-to-left direction of the equivalence is based on Kuratowski's Theorem for planarity involving K_{3,3} and K_5, but the criterion itself does not mention K_{3,3} and K_5. Some other variants of the criterion are also shown necessary and sufficient for planarity.
A note on packing spanning trees in graphs and bases in matroids
We consider the class of graphs for which the edge connectivity is equal to the maximum number of edge-disjoint spanning trees, and the natural generalization to matroids, where the cogirth is equal to the number of disjoint bases. We provide descriptions of such graphs and matroids, showing that such a graph (or matroid) has a unique decomposition. In the case of graphs, our results are relevant for certain communication protocols.
The Janson inequalities for general up-sets

Janson and Janson, Luczak and Rucinski proved several inequalities for the lower tail of the distribution of the number of events that hold, when all the events are up-sets (increasing events) of a special form - each event is the intersection of some subset of a single set of independent events (i.e., a principal up-set). We show that these inequalities in fact hold for arbitrary up-sets, by modifying existing proofs to use only positive correlation, avoiding the need to assume positive correlation conditioned on one of the events.

Asymptotic Automorphism Groups of Circulant Graphs and Digraphs

We show that almost all circulant graphs have automorphism groups as small as possible. Of the circulant graphs that do not have automorphism group as small as possible, we give some families of integers such that it is not true that almost all circulant graphs whose order lies in any one of these families, are normal. That almost all Cayley (di)graphs whose automorphism group is not as small as possible are normal was conjectured by the second author, so these results provide counterexamples to this conjecture. It is then shown that there is a large family of integers for which almost every circulant digraph whose order lies in this family and that does not have automorphism group as small as possible, is normal. We additionally explore the asymptotic behavior of the automorphism groups of circulant (di)graphs that are not normal, and show that no general conclusion can be obtained.
On constructions and parameters of symmetric configurations v_{k}

The spectrum of possible parameters of symmetric configurations is investigated. We both survey known constructions and results, and propose some new construction methods. Many new parameters are obtained, in particular for cyclic symmetric configurations, which are equivalent to deficient cyclic difference sets. Both Golomb rulers and modular Golomb rulers are a key tool in our investigation. Several new upper bounds on the minimum integer E(k) such that for each v >= E(k) there exists a symmetric configuration v_{k} are obtained. Upper bounds of the same type are provided for cyclic symmetric configurations. From the standpoint of applications, it should be noted that our results extend the range of possible parameters of LDPC codes, generalized LDPC codes, and quasi-cyclic LDPC codes.
The maximum number of minimal codewords in an $[n,k]-$code
Upper and lower bounds are derived for the quantity in the title, which is tabulated for modest values of $n$ and $k.$ An application to graphs with many cycles is given.
