Optimum Subcodes of Self-Dual Codes and Their Optimum Distance Profiles

Binary optimal codes often contain optimal or near-optimal subcodes. In this paper we show that this is true for the family of self-dual codes. One approach is to compute the optimum distance profiles (ODPs) of linear codes, which was introduced by Luo, et. al. (2010). One of our main results is the development of general algorithms, called the Chain Algorithms, for finding ODPs of linear codes. Then we determine the ODPs for the Type II codes of lengths up to 24 and the extremal Type II codes of length 32, give a partial result of the ODP of the extended quadratic residue code $q_{48}$ of length 48. We also show that there does not exist a $[48,k,16]$ subcode of $q_{48}$ for $k \ge 17$, and we find a first example of a doubly-even self-complementary $[48, 16, 16]$ code.
Some Harmonic Number Identities involving certain Reciprocals
Some finite series of harmonic numbers involving certain reciprocals are evaluated. Products of such reciprocals are expanded in a sum of the individual reciprocals, leading to a computer program. A list of examples is provided.

We build, from the collection of all groups of unitriangular matrices, Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. Such structure is carried by the collection of class function spaces on those groups, and also by the collection of superclass function spaces, in the sense of Diaconis and Isaacs. Superclasses of unitriangular matrices admit a simple description from which we deduce a combinatorial model for the Hopf monoid of superclass functions, in terms of the Hadamard product of the Hopf monoids of linear orders and of set partitions. This implies a recent result relating the Hopf algebra of superclass functions on unitriangular matrices to symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We determine the algebraic structure of the Hopf monoid: it is a free monoid in species, with the canonical Hopf structure. As an application, we derive certain estimates on the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices.

Let G be a semi-simple simply connected group over complex numbers. In this paper we give a geometric definition of the (dual) Weyl modules over the group G[t] and show that their characters form an eigen-function of the lattice version of the q-Toda integrable integrable system (defined by means of the quantum group version of Kostant-Whittaker reduction due to Etingof and Sevostyanov). All the proofs are algebro-geometric and rely on our previous work which interprets the universal eigen-function of the q-Toda system in terms of rings of functions on the spaces of based quasi-maps from P^1 to the flag variety of G.
We discuss in detail the relation between the current work and the works of Cherednik, Ion, Sanderson and Gerasimov-Lebedev-Oblezin.
Extremal Graph Theory for Metric Dimension and Girth
A set $W\subseteq V(G)$ is called a resolving set for $G$, if for each two distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ there exists $w\in W$ such that $d(u,w)\neq d(v,w)$, where $d(x,y)$ is the distance between the vertices $x$ and $y$. The minimum cardinality of a resolving set for $G$ is called the metric dimension of $G$, and denoted by $β(G)$. In this paper, it is proved that in a connected graph $G$ of order $n$ which has a cycle, $β(G)\leq n-g(G)+2$, where $g(G)$ is the length of a shortest cycle in $G$, and the equality holds if and only if $G$ is a cycle, a complete graph or a complete bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$, $ s,t\geq 2$.
On green routing and scheduling problem
The vehicle routing and scheduling problem has been studied with much interest within the last four decades. In this paper, some of the existing literature dealing with routing and scheduling problems with environmental issues is reviewed, and a description is provided of the problems that have been investigated and how they are treated using combinatorial optimization tools.

We prove that the number of permutations avoiding an arbitrary consecutive pattern of length m is asymptotically largest when the avoided pattern is 12...m, and smallest when the avoided pattern is 12...(m-2)m(m-1). This settles a conjecture of the author and Noy from 2001, as well as another recent conjecture of Nakamura. We also show that among non-overlapping patterns of length m, the pattern 134...m2 is the one for which the number of permutations avoiding it is asymptotically largest.

The classical Gindikin-Karpelevich formula appears in Langlands' calculation of the constant terms of Eisenstein series on reductive groups and in Macdonald's work on p-adic groups and affine Hecke algebras. The formula has been generalized in the work of Garland to the affine Kac-Moody case, and the affine case has been geometrically constructed in a recent paper of Braverman, Finkelberg, and Kazhdan. On the other hand, there have been efforts to write the formula as a sum over Kashiwara's crystal basis or Lusztig's canonical basis, initiated by Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg. In this paper, we write the affine Gindikin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over the crystal of generalized Young walls when the underlying Kac-Moody algebra is of affine type A_n^(1). The coefficients of the terms in the sum are determined explicitly by the combinatorial data from Young walls.
Uniquely K_r-Saturated Graphs

A graph G is uniquely K_r-saturated if it contains no clique with r vertices and if for all edges e in the complement, G + e has a unique clique with r vertices. Previously, few examples of uniquely K_r-saturated graphs were known, and little was known about their properties. We search for these graphs by adapting orbital branching, a technique originally developed for symmetric integer linear programs. We find several new uniquely K_r-saturated graphs with 4 \leq r \leq 7, as well as two new infinite families based on Cayley graphs for Z_n with a small number of generators.
Cycles and eigenvalues of sequentially growing random regular graphs

Consider the sum of $d$ many i.i.d. random permutation matrices on $n$ labels along with their transposes. The resulting matrix is the adjacency matrix of a random regular (multi)-graph of degree $2d$ on $n$ vertices. It is known that the distribution of smooth linear eigenvalue statistics of this matrix is given asymptotically by sums of Poisson random variables. This is in contrast with Gaussian fluctuation of similar quantities in the case of Wigner matrices. It is also known that for Wigner matrices the joint fluctuation of linear eigenvalue statistics across minors of growing sizes can be expressed in terms of the Gaussian Free Field (GFF). In this article, we explore joint asymptotic (in $n$) fluctuation for a coupling of all random regular graphs of various degrees obtained by growing each component permutation according to the Chinese Restaurant Process. Our primary result is that the corresponding eigenvalue statistics can be expressed in terms of a family of independent Yule processes with immigration. These processes track the evolution of short cycles in the graph. If we now take $d$ to infinity, certain GFF-like properties emerge.

Minimal 1-saturating sets in the projective plane $PG(2,q)$ are considered. They correspond to covering codes which can be applied to many branches of combinatorics and information theory, as data compression, compression with distortion, broadcasting in interconnection network, write-once memory or steganography (see \cite{Coh} and \cite{BF2008}). The full classification of all the minimal 1-saturating sets in PG(2,9) and PG(2,11) and the classification of minimal 1-saturating sets of smallest size in PG(2,q), $16\leq q\leq 23$ are given. These results have been found using a computer-based exhaustive search that exploits projective equivalence properties.
On homometric sets in graphs

For a vertex set $S\subseteq V(G)$ in a graph $G$, the {\em distance multiset}, $D(S)$, is the multiset of pairwise distances between vertices of $S$ in $G$. Two vertex sets are called {\em homometric} if their distance multisets are identical. For a graph $G$, the largest integer $h$, such that there are two disjoint homometric sets of order $h$ in $G$, is denoted by $h(G)$. We slightly improve the general bound on this parameter introduced by Albertson, Pach and Young (2010) and investigate it in more detail for trees and graphs of bounded diameter. In particular, we show that for any tree $T$ on $n$ vertices $h(T) \geq \sqrt[3]{n}$ and for any graph $G$ of fixed diameter $d$, $h(G) \geq cn^{1/ (2d-2)}$.
Enumeration and Structure of Trapezoidal Words

Trapezoidal words are words having at most $n+1$ distinct factors of length $n$ for every $n\ge 0$. They therefore encompass finite Sturmian words. We give combinatorial characterizations of trapezoidal words and exhibit a formula for their enumeration. We then separate trapezoidal words into two disjoint classes: open and closed. A trapezoidal word is closed if it has a factor that occurs only as a prefix and as a suffix; otherwise it is open. We investigate open and closed trapezoidal words, in relation with their special factors. We prove that Sturmian palindromes are closed trapezoidal words and that a closed trapezoidal word is a Sturmian palindrome if and only if its longest repeated prefix is a palindrome. We also define a new class of words, \emph{semicentral words}, and show that they are characterized by the property that they can be written as $uxyu$, for a central word $u$ and two different letters $x,y$. Finally, we investigate the prefixes of the Fibonacci word with respect to the property of being open or closed trapezoidal words, and show that the sequence of open and closed prefixes of the Fibonacci word follows the Fibonacci sequence.

These are lecture notes for the Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard, November, 2011. We discuss topological, probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of the Laplacian on a graph embedded on a surface. The three main goals are to discuss: (1) for "circular" planar networks, the characterization due to Colin de Verdière of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator; (2) The connections with the random spanning tree model; and (3) the characteristic polynomial of the Laplacian on an annulus and torus.
On infinite-finite duality pairs of directed graphs

The (A,D) duality pairs play crucial role in the theory of general relational structures and in the Constraint Satisfaction Problem. The case where both classes are finite is fully characterized. The case when both side are infinite seems to be very complex. It is also known that no finite-infinite duality pair is possible if we make the additional restriction that both classes are antichains. In this paper (which is the first one of a series) we start the detailed study of the infinite-finite case.
Here we concentrate on directed graphs. We prove some elementary properties of the infinite-finite duality pairs, including lower and upper bounds on the size of D, and show that the elements of A must be equivalent to forests if A is an antichain. Then we construct instructive examples, where the elements of A are paths or trees. Note that the existence of infinite-finite antichain dualities was not previously known.
On the number of regions and multiplicities of vertices in plane arrangements
For an arrangement of $n$ pseudolines in the real projective plane let us denote by $t_i$ the number of vertices incident to $i$ lines. We obtain a linear on $t_i$ inequality similar to the Hirzebruch one, but with an elementary proof. We present an algorithm for producing lower bounds of the number of regions basing on linear on $t_i$ inequalities like the above-mentioned. Lower bounds arise in connection with Martinov theorem on the set of all possible numbers of regions and we show how the new bounds may be applied in it.

Heckman and Thomas conjectured that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 14/5. Improving on estimates of Hatami and Zhu and of Lu and Peng, we prove that the fractional chromatic number of any triangle-free subcubic graph is at most 32/11 (which is roughly 2.909).
Maximum edges possible in a graph for restricted independence number, maximum degree, and maximum matching size
This article provides sharp bounds for the maximum number of edges possible in a simple graph with restricted values of two of the three parameters, namely, maxi- mum matching size, independence number and maximum degree. We also construct extremal graphs that achieve the edge bounds in all cases. We further establish uniqueness of these extremal graphs whenever they are unique.

We characterize obstruction sets in caterpillar dualities in terms of regular languages, and give a construction of the dual of a regular family of caterpillars. We prove a multivariate strengthening of Brenti's result that every root of the Eulerian polynomial of type $B$ is real. Our proof combines a refinement of the descent statistic for signed permutations with the notion of real stability-a generalization of real-rootedness to polynomials in multiple variables. The key is that our refined multivariate Eulerian polynomials satisfy a recurrence given by a stability-preserving linear operator. Our results extend naturally to colored permutations, and we also give stable generalizations of recent real-rootedness results due to Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge on affine Eulerian polynomials of types $A$ and $C$. Finally, although we are not able to settle Brenti's real-rootedness conjecture for Eulerian polynomials of type $D$, nor prove a companion conjecture of Dilks, Petersen, and Stembridge for affine Eulerian polynomials of types $B$ and $D$, we indicate some methods of attack and pose some related open problems.
