A permutation pattern that illustrates the strong law of small numbers
We obtain an explicit formula for the number of permutations of [n] that avoid the barred pattern bar{1}43bar{5}2. A curious feature of its counting sequence, 1, 1, 2, 5, 14, 43, 145, 538, 2194,..., is that the displayed terms agree with A122993 in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, but the two sequences diverge thereafter.

Which Schubert varieties are local complete intersections?
Published in Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society 107 (2013) 1004-1052 • View Publication • BIB
We characterize by pattern avoidance the Schubert varieties for GL_n which are local complete intersections (lci). For those Schubert varieties which are local complete intersections, we give an explicit minimal set of equations cutting out their neighborhoods at the identity. Although the statement of our characterization only requires ordinary pattern avoidance, showing that the Schubert varieties not satisfying our conditions are not lci appears to require working with more general notions of pattern avoidance. The Schubert varieties defined by inclusions, originally introduced by Gasharov and Reiner, turn out to be an important subclass, and we further develop some of their combinatorics. Applications include formulas for Kostant polynomials and presentations of cohomology rings for lci Schubert varieties.

Powers of edge ideals
We compute the Betti numbers for all the powers of initial and final lexsegment edge ideals. For the powers of the edge ideal of an anti-$d-$path, we prove that they have linear quotients and we characterize the normally torsion-free ideals. We determine a class of non-squarefree ideals, arising from some particular graphs, which are normally torsion-free.

Convergence of Achlioptas processes via differential equations with unique solutions
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 154-171 • View Publication • BIB
In Achlioptas processes, starting from an empty graph, in each step two potential edges are chosen uniformly at random, and using some rule one of them is selected and added to the evolving graph. The evolution of the rescaled size of the largest component in such variations of the Erdős--Rényi random graph process has recently received considerable attention, in particular for for Bollobás's `product rule'. In this paper we establish the following result for rules such as the product rule: the limit of the rescaled size of the `giant' component exists and is continuous provided that a certain system of differential equations has a unique solution. In fact, our result applies to a very large class of Achlioptas-like processes. Our proof relies on a general idea which relates the evolution of stochastic processes to an associated system of differential equations. Provided that the latter has a unique solution, our approach shows that certain discrete quantities converge (after appropriate rescaling) to this solution.

Combinatorial Hopf algebra of superclass functions of type $D$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide a Hopf algebra structure on the space of superclass functions on the unipotent upper triangular group of type D over a finite field based on a supercharacter theory constructed by André and Neto. Also, we make further comments with respect to types B and C. Type A was explores by M. Aguiar et. al (2010), thus this paper is a contribution to understand combinatorially the supercharacter theory of the other classical Lie types.

A new transfer-matrix algorithm for exact enumerations: Self-avoiding polygons on the square lattice
Published in J. Phys. A 45 115202 (2012) • View Publication • BIB
We present a new and more efficient implementation of transfer-matrix methods for exact enumerations of lattice objects. The new method is illustrated by an application to the enumeration of self-avoiding polygons on the square lattice. A detailed comparison with the previous best algorithm shows significant improvement in the running time of the algorithm. The new algorithm is used to extend the enumeration of polygons to length 130 from the previous record of 110.

An additive combinatorics approach to the log-rank conjecture in communication complexity
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a $\{0,1\}$-valued matrix $M$ let $\rm{CC}(M)$ denote the deterministic communication complexity of the boolean function associated with $M$. The log-rank conjecture of Lovász and Saks [FOCS 1988] states that $\rm{CC}(M) \leq \log^c(\rm{rank}(M))$ for some absolute constant $c$ where $\rm{rank}(M)$ denotes the rank of $M$ over the field of real numbers. We show that $\rm{CC}(M)\leq c \cdot \rm{rank}(M)/\log \rm{rank}(M)$ for some absolute constant $c$, assuming a well-known conjecture from additive combinatorics known as the Polynomial Freiman-Ruzsa (PFR) conjecture. Our proof is based on the study of the "approximate duality conjecture" which was recently suggested by Ben-Sasson and Zewi [STOC 2011] and studied there in connection to the PFR conjecture. First we improve the bounds on approximate duality assuming the PFR conjecture. Then we use the approximate duality conjecture (with improved bounds) to get the aforementioned upper bound on the communication complexity of low-rank martices, where this part uses the methodology suggested by Nisan and Wigderson [Combinatorica 1995].

Integrality of hook ratios
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study integral ratios of hook products of quotient partitions. This question is motivated by an analogous question in number theory concerning integral factorial ratios. We prove an analogue of a theorem of Landau that already applied in the factorial case. Under the additional condition that the ratio has one more factor on the denominator than the numerator, we provide a complete classification. Ultimately this relies on Kneser's theorem in additive combinatorics.

On the density of triangles and squares in regular finite and unimodular random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We explicitly describe the possible pairs of triangle and square densities for r-regular finite simple graphs. We also prove that every r-regular unimodular random graph can be approximated by r-regular finite graphs with respect to these densities. As a corollary one gets an explicit description of the possible pairs of the third and fourth moments of the spectral measure of r-regular unimodular random graphs.

Minor crossing number is additive over arbitrary cuts
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that if $G$ is a graph with an minimal edge cut $F$ of size three and $G_1$, $G_2$ are the two (augmented) components of $G-F$, then the crossing number of $G$ is equal to the sum of crossing numbers of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Combining with known results, this implies that crossing number is additive over edge-cuts of size $d$ for $d\in\{0, 1, 2, 3\}$, whereas there are counterexamples for every $d\ge 4$. The techniques generalize to show that minor crossing number is additive over edge cuts of arbitrary size, as well as to provide bounds for crossing number additivity in arbitrary surfaces. We point out several applications to exact crossing number computation and crossing critical graphs, as well as provide a very general lower bound for the minor crossing number of the Cartesian product of an arbitrary graph with a tree.

Memoryless computation: new results, constructions, and extensions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we are interested in memoryless computation, a modern paradigm to compute functions which generalises the famous XOR swap algorithm to exchange the contents of two variables without using a buffer. This uses a combinatorial framework for procedural programming languages, where programs are only allowed to update one variable at a time. We first consider programs which do not have any memory. We prove that any function of $n$ variables can be computed this way in only $4n-3$ variable updates. We then derive the exact number of instructions required to compute any manipulation of variables. This shows that combining variables, instead of simply moving them around, not only allows for memoryless programs, but also yields shorter programs. Second, we show that allowing programs to use memory is also incorporated in the memoryless computation framework. We then quantify the gains obtained by using memory: this leads to shorter programs and allows us to use only binary instructions, which is not sufficient in general when no memory is used.

Fully Packed Loop configurations in a triangle
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A Volume 120, Issue 8, November 2013, Pages 2164-2188 • View Publication • BIB
Fully Packed Loop configurations (FPLs) are certain configurations on the square grid, naturally refined according to certain link patterns. If $A_X$ is the number of FPLs with link pattern $X$, the Razumov--Stroganov correspondence provides relations between numbers $A_X$ relative to a given grid size. In another line of research, if $X\cup p$ denotes $X$ with $p$ additional nested arches, then $A_{X\cup p}$ was shown to be polynomial in $p$: the proof gives rise to certain configurations of FPLs in a triangle (TFPLs). In this work we investigate these TFPL configurations and their relation to FPLs. We prove certain properties of TFPLs, and enumerate them under special boundary conditions. From this study we deduce a class of linear relations, conjectured by Thapper, between quantities $A_X$ relative to different grid sizes, relations which thus differ from the Razumov--Stroganov ones.

Adinkras for Mathematicians
Published • View Publication • BIB
Adinkras are graphical tools created for the study of representations in supersymmetry. Besides having inherent interest for physicists, adinkras offer many easy-to-state and accessible mathematical problems of algebraic, combinatorial, and computational nature. We use a more mathematically natural language to survey these topics, suggest new definitions, and present original results.

Minimum codegree threshold for $(K_4^3-e)$-factors
Given hypergraphs H and F, an F-factor in H is a spanning subgraph consisting of vertex disjoint copies of F. Let K_4^3-e denote the 3-uniform hypergraph on 4 vertices with 3 edges. We show that for γ>0 there exists an integer n_0 such that every 3-uniform hypergraph $H$ of order n > n_0 with minimum codegree at least (1/2+γ)n and 4|n contains a (K_4^3-e)-factor. Moreover, this bound is asymptotically the best possible and we further give a conjecture on the exact value of the threshold for the existence of a (K_4^3-e)-factor. Therefore, all minimum codegree thresholds for the existence of F-factors are known asymptotically for 3-uniform hypergraphs F on 4 vertices.
Upper bounds for the Stanley-Wilf limit of 1324 and other layered patterns
Published in J. Comb. Theory A, 119(8) (2012), 1680-1691 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the Stanley-Wilf limit of any layered permutation pattern of length $\ell$ is at most $4\ell^2$, and that the Stanley-Wilf limit of the pattern 1324 is at most 16. These bounds follow from a more general result showing that a permutation avoiding a pattern of a special form is a merge of two permutations, each of which avoids a smaller pattern. If the conjecture is true that the maximum Stanley-Wilf limit for patterns of length $\ell$ is attained by a layered pattern then this implies an upper bound of $4\ell^2$ for the Stanley-Wilf limit of any pattern of length $\ell$. We also conjecture that, for any $k\ge 0$, the set of 1324-avoiding permutations with $k$ inversions contains at least as many permutations of length $n+1$ as those of length $n$. We show that if this is true then the Stanley-Wilf limit for 1324 is at most $e^{π\sqrt{2/3}} \simeq 13.001954$.

Two questions of Erdős on hypergraphs above the Tur{á}n threshold}
For ordinary graphs it is known that any graph $G$ with more edges than the Tur{á}n number of $K_s$ must contain several copies of $K_s$, and a copy of $K_{s+1}^-$, the complete graph on $s+1$ vertices with one missing edge. Erdős asked if the same result is true for $K^3_s$, the complete 3-uniform hypergraph on $s$ vertices. In this note we show that for small values of $n$, the number of vertices in $G$, the answer is negative for $s=4$. For the second property, that of containing a ${K^3_{s+1}}^-$, we show that for $s=4$ the answer is negative for all large $n$ as well, by proving that the Tur{á}n density of ${K^3_5}^-$ is greater than that of $K^3_4$.

On heavy paths in 2-connected weighted graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A weighted graph is a graph in which every edge is assigned a non-negative real number. In a weighted graph, the weight of a path is the sum of the weights of its edges, and the weighed degree of a vertex is the sum of the weights of the edges incident with it. In this paper we give three weighted degree conditions for the existence of heavy or Hamilton paths with one or two given end-vertices in 2-connected weighted graphs.
