The \emph{metric dimension} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\dim(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices such that each vertex is uniquely determined by its distances to the chosen vertices. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be disjoint copies of a graph $G$ and let $f: V(G_1) \rightarrow V(G_2)$ be a function. Then a \emph{functigraph} $C(G, f)=(V, E)$ has the vertex set $V=V(G_1) \cup V(G_2)$ and the edge set $E=E(G_1) \cup E(G_2) \cup \{uv \mid v=f(u)\}$. We study how metric dimension behaves in passing from $G$ to $C(G,f)$ by first showing that $2 \le \dim(C(G, f)) \le 2n-3$, if $G$ is a connected graph of order $n \ge 3$ and $f$ is any function. We further investigate the metric dimension of functigraphs on complete graphs and on cycles.
On the Orchard crossing number of prisms, ladders and other related graphs
This paper deals with the Orchard crossing number of some families of graphs which are based on cycles. These include disjoint cycles, cycles which share a vertex and cycles which share an edge. Specifically, we focus on the prism and ladder graphs.
Towards on-line Ohba's conjecture

The on-line choice number of a graph is a variation of the choice number defined through a two person game. It is at least as large as the choice number for all graphs and is strictly larger for some graphs. In particular, there are graphs $G$ with $|V(G)| = 2 χ(G)+1$ whose on-line choice numbers are larger than their chromatic numbers, in contrast to a recently confirmed conjecture of Ohba that every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \le 2 χ(G)+1$ has its choice number equal its chromatic number. Nevertheless, an on-line version of Ohba conjecture was proposed in [P. Huang, T. Wong and X. Zhu, Application of polynomial method to on-line colouring of graphs, European J. Combin., 2011]: Every graph $G$ with $|V(G)| \le 2 χ(G)$ has its on-line choice number equal its chromatic number. This paper confirms the on-line version of Ohba conjecture for graphs $G$ with independence number at most 3. We also study list colouring of complete multipartite graphs $K_{3\star k}$ with all parts of size 3. We prove that the on-line choice number of $K_{3 \star k}$ is at most $3/2k$, and present an alternate proof of Kierstead's result that its choice number is $\lceil (4k-1)/3 \rceil$. For general graphs $G$, we prove that if $|V(G)| \le χ(G)+\sqrt{χ(G)}$ then its on-line choice number equals chromatic number.
New light on Bergman complexes by decomposing matroid types

Bergman complexes are polyhedral complexes associated to matroids. Faces of these complexes are certain matroids, called matroid types, too. In order to understand the structure of these faces we decompose matroid types into direct summands. Ardila/Klivans proved that the Bergman Complex of a matroid can be subdivided into the order complex of the proper part of its lattice of flats. Beyond that Feichtner/Sturmfels showed that the Bergman complex can even be subdivided to the even coarser nested set complex. We will give a much shorter and more general proof of this fact. Generalizing formulas proposed by Ardila/Klivans and Feichtner/Sturmfels for special cases, we present a decomposition into direct sums working for faces of any of these complexes. Additionally we show that it is the finest possible decomposition for faces of the Bergman complex.

We study the conflict-free chromatic number chi_{CF} of graphs from extremal and probabilistic point of view. We resolve a question of Pach and Tardos about the maximum conflict-free chromatic number an n-vertex graph can have. Our construction is randomized. In relation to this we study the evolution of the conflict-free chromatic number of the Erdős-Rényi random graph G(n,p) and give the asymptotics for p=omega(1/n). We also show that for p \geq 1/2 the conflict-free chromatic number differs from the domination number by at most 3.
An Inequality for Generalized Chromatic Graphs
Let $G$ be a simple $n$-vertex graph with degree sequence $d_1,d_2,...,d_n$ and vertex set $\V(G)$. The degree of $v\in\V(G)$ is denoted by $\D(v)$. The smallest integer $r$ for which $\V(G)$ has an $r$-partition $$ \V(G)=V_1\cup V_2\cup...\cup V_r,\quad V_i\cap V_j=\emptyset, \quad,i\neq j $$ such that $\D(v)\leq n-\abs{V_i}$, $\forall v\in V_i$, $i=1,2,...,r$ is denoted by $\f(G)$. In this note we prove the inequality $$ \f(G)\geq\frac n{n-\bar{\bar{d}}}, $$ where $\bar{\bar{d}}=\sqrt{\dfrac{d_1^2+d_2^2+...+d_n^2}n}$.
Shirshov's theorem and division rings that are left algebraic over a subfield

Let D be a division ring. We say that D is left algebraic over a (not necessarily central) subfield K of D if every x in D satisfies a polynomial equation x^n + a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+...+a_0=0 with a_0,...,a_{n-1} in K. We show that if D is a division ring that is left algebraic over a subfield K of bounded degree d then D is at most d^2-dimensional over its center. This generalizes a result of Kaplansky. For the proof we give a new version of the combinatorial theorem of Shirshov that sufficiently long words over a finite alphabet contain either a q-decomposable subword or a high power of a non-trivial subword. We show that if the word does not contain high powers then the factors in the q-decomposition may be chosen to be of almost the same length. We conclude by giving a list of problems for algebras that are left algebraic over a commutative subring.
An improved upper bound for the bondage number of graphs on surfaces

The bondage number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of edges whose removal from $G$ results in a graph with larger domination number. Recently Gagarin and Zverovich showed that, for a graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$ and embeddable on an orientable surface of genus $h$ and a non-orientable surface of genus $k$, $b(G)\leq\min\{Δ(G)+h+2,Δ+k+1\}$. They also gave examples showing that adjustments of their proofs implicitly provide better results for larger values of $h$ and $k$. In this paper we establish an improved explicit upper bound for $b(G)$, using the Euler characteristic $χ$ instead of the genera $h$ and $k$, with the relations $χ=2-2h$ and $χ=2-k$. We show that $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+\lfloor r\rfloor$ for the case $χ\leq0$ (i.e. $h\geq1$ or $k\geq2$), where $r$ is the largest real root of the cubic equation $z^3+2z^2+(6χ-7)z+18χ-24=0$. Our proof is based on the technique developed by Carlson-Develin and Gagarin-Zverovich, and includes some elementary calculus as a new ingredient. We also find an asymptotically equivalent result $b(G)\leqΔ(G)+\lceil\sqrt{12-6χ\,}-1/2\rceil$ for $χ\leq0$, and a further improvement for graphs with large girth.
Product formulas for volumes of flow polytopes
Intrigued by the product formula prod_{i=1}^{n-2} C_i for the volume of the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope CRY_n, where C_i is the ith Catalan number, we construct a family of polytopes P_{m,n}, whose volumes are given by the product \prod_{i=m+1}^{m+n-2}\frac{1}{2i+1}{{m+n+i} \choose {2i}}. The Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope CRY_n coincides with P_{0,n-1}. Our construction of the polytopes P_{m,n} is an application of a systematic method we develop for expressing volumes of a class of flow polytopes as the number of certain triangular arrays. This method can also be used as a heuristic technique for constructing polytopes with combinatorial volumes. As an illustration of this we construct polytopes whose volumes equal the number of r-ary trees on n internal nodes, \frac{1}{(r-1)n+1} {{rn} \choose n}. Using triangular arrays we also express the volumes of flow polytopes as constant terms of formal Laurent series.

In this paper we further study the relationship between convexity and additive growth, building on the work of Schoen and Shkredov (\cite{SS}) to get some improvements to earlier results of Elekes, Nathanson and Ruzsa (\cite{ENR}). In particular, we show that for any finite set $A\subset{\mathbb{R}}$ and any strictly convex or concave function $f$, \[|A+f(A)|\gg{\frac{|A|^{24/19}}{(\log|A|)^{2/19}}}\] and \[\max\{|A-A|,\ |f(A)+f(A)|\}\gg{\frac{|A|^{14/11}}{(\log|A|)^{2/11}}}.\] For the latter of these inequalities, we go on to consider the consequences for a sum-product type problem.

A finite group $G$ is called a Schur group, if any Schur ring over $G$ is the transitivity module of a permutation group on the set $G$ containing the regular subgroup of all right translations. It was proved by R. Pöschel (1974) that given a prime $p\ge 5$ a $p$-group is Schur if and only if it is cyclic. We prove that a cyclic group of order $n$ is a Schur group if and only if $n$ belongs to one of the following five (partially overlapped) families of integers: $p^k$, $pq^k$, $2pq^k$, $pqr$, $2pqr$ where $p,q,r$ are distinct primes, and $k\ge 0$ is an integer.

From Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich-Witten tau-function: a connection by Virasoro operators

In this letter,we present our conjecture on the connection between the Kontsevich--Witten and the Hurwitz tau-functions. The conjectural formula connects these two tau-functions by means of the $GL(\infty)$ group element. An important feature of this group element is its simplicity: this is a group element of the Virasoro subalgebra of $gl(\infty)$. If proved, this conjecture would allow to derive the Virasoro constraints for the Hurwitz tau-function, which remain unknown in spite of existence of several matrix model representations, as well as to give an integrable operator description of the Kontsevich--Witten tau-function.
The Lie bialgebra structure of the vector space of cyclic words
In this paper we give a combinatory proof of the Lie bialgebra structure presented in the vector space of reduced cyclic words. This structure was introduce by M. Chas in Combinatorial lie bialgebras of curves on surfaces, where the proof of the existence of this Lie bialgebra structure is based on the existence of an isomorphism between the space of reduced cyclic word and the space of curves on a surface.
A Gray Code for the Shelling Types of the Boundary of a Hypercube

We consider two shellings of the boundary of the hypercube equivalent if one can be transformed into the other by an isometry of the cube. We observe that a class of indecomposable permutations, bijectively equivalent to standard double occurrence words, may be used to encode one representative from each equivalence class of the shellings of the boundary of the hypercube. These permutations thus encode the shelling types of the boundary of the hypercube. We construct an adjacent transposition Gray code for this class of permutations. Our result is a signed variant of King's result showing that there is a transposition Gray code for indecomposable permutations.

Recently, Jelínek derived that the number of self-dual interval orders of reduced size $n$ is twice the number of row-Fishburn matrices of size $n$ by using generating functions. In this paper, we present a bijective proof of this relation by establishing a bijection between two variations of upper-triangular matrices of nonnegative integers. Using the bijection, we provide a combinatorial proof of the refined relations between self-dual Fishburn matrices and row-Fishburn matrices in answer to a problem proposed by Jelínek.
The inducibility of small oriented graphs
We use Razborov's flag algebra method to show an asymptotic upper bound for the maximal induced density $i(\vec P_3)$ of the orgraph $\vec P_3$ in an arbitrary orgraph. A conjecture of Thomassé states that $i(\vec P_3)=2/5$. The hitherto best known upper bound $i(\vec P_3)\leq12/25$ was given by Bondy. We can show that $i(\vec P_3)\leq 0.4446$. Further, we consider such a maximal density for some other small orgraphs. With easy arguments one can see that $i(\vec C_3)=1/4$, $i(\vec K_2 \cup \vec E_1)=3/4$ and $2/21\leq i(\vec C_4)$. We show that $i(\vec C_4)\leq 0.1104$ and conjecture that the extremal orgraphs of $\vec P_3$ and $\vec C_4$ are the same. Furthermore we show that $6-4\sqrt{2}\leq i(\vec K_{1,2})\leq 0.4644$.
A Simple Optimal Binary Representation of Mosaic Floorplans and Baxter Permutations

A "floorplan" is a rectangle subdivided into smaller rectangular sections by horizontal and vertical line segments. Each section in the floorplan is called a "block". Two floorplans are considered equivalent if and only if there is a one-to-one correspondence between the blocks in the two floorplans such that the relative position relationship of the blocks in one floorplan is the same as the relative position relationship of the corresponding blocks in another floorplan. The objects of "Mosaic floorplans" are the same as floorplans, but an alternative definition of equivalence is used. Two mosaic floorplans are considered equivalent if and only if they can be converted to each other by sliding the line segments that divide the blocks.
Mosaic floorplans are widely used in VLSI circuit design. An important problem in this area is to find short binary string representations of the set of n-block mosaic floorplans. The best known representation is the "Quarter-State Sequence" which uses 4n bits. This paper introduces a simple binary representation of n-block mosaic floorplan using 3n-3 bits. It has been shown that any binary representation of n-block mosaic floorplans must use at least (3n-o(n)) bits. Therefore, the representation presented in this paper is optimal (up to an additive lower order term).
"Baxter permutations" are a set of permutations defined by prohibited subsequences. Baxter permutations have been shown to have one-to-one correspondences to many interesting objects in the so-called "Baxter combinatorial family". In particular, there exists a simple one-to-one correspondence between mosaic floorplans and Baxter permutations. As a result, the methods introduced in this paper also lead to an optimal binary representation of Baxter permutations and all objects in the Baxter combinatorial family.

We consider finite groups acting on quantum (or skew) polynomial rings. Deformations of the semidirect product of the quantum polynomial ring with the acting group extend symplectic reflection algebras and graded Hecke algebras to the quantum setting over a field of arbitrary characteristic. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such algebras to satisfy a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt property using the theory of noncommutative Groebner bases. We include applications to the case of abelian groups and the case of groups acting on coordinate rings of quantum planes. In addition, we classify graded automorphisms of the coordinate ring of quantum 3-space. In characteristic zero, Hochschild cohomology gives an elegant description of the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt conditions.
