More sum-product type counterexamples: products with shifts and $AA+A$
Adapting the construction disproving the sum-product conjecture over $\mathbb R$ present in Bloom, Sawin, Schildkraut and Zhelezov, we show the existence of a constant $c>0$ and arbitrarily large finite sets $A \subseteq \mathbb R$ such that
$$|AA+A+A| \ll |A|^{2-c}.$$ As a corollary, all of the sets $A+A$, $AA$, $(A+1)(A+1)$, $A(A+1)$ and $AA+A$ are of size $O(|A|^{2-c})$ for this construction.
A sharp point-sphere incidence bound for $(u, s)$-Salem sets
We establish a sharp point-sphere incidence bound in finite fields for point sets exhibiting controlled additive structure. Working in the framework of \((4,s)\)-Salem sets, which quantify pseudorandomness via fourth-order additive energy, we prove that if \(P\subset \mathbb{F}_q^d\) is a \((4,s)\)-Salem set with \(s\in \big( \frac{1}{4}, \frac{1}{2} \big]\) and \(|P|\ll q^{ \frac{d}{4s}}\), then for any finite family \(S\) of spheres in \(\mathbb{F}_q^d\), \[ \bigg| I(P,S)-\frac{|P||S| }{q} \bigg| \ll q^{\frac{d}{4}}\,|P|^{1-s}\,|S|^{\frac{3}{4}}. \] This estimate improves the classical point-sphere incidence bounds for arbitrary point sets across a broad parameter range. The proof combines additive energy estimates with a lifting argument that converts point-sphere incidences into point-hyperplane incidences in one higher dimension while preserving the \((4,s)\)-Salem property. As applications, we derive refined bounds for unit distances and sum-product type phenomena, and we extend the method to \((u,s)\)-Salem sets for even moments \(u\ge4\).
Frostman random variables, entropy inequalities, and applications
We introduce Frostman conditions for bivariate random variables and study discretized entropy sum-product phenomena in both independent and dependent settings. Fix $0 < s < 1$, and let $(X,Y)$ be a bivariate real random variable with bounded support, whose distribution satisfies a Frostman condition of dimension $s$. Let $φ(x,y)$ be a polynomial obtained from a diagonal polynomial $ρ_1(x)+ρ_2(y)\in \mathbb{R}[x, y]$ of degree $d\ge 2$ by applying an invertible rational linear change of variables in $(x,y)$. We show that there exists $ε= ε(φ,s)>0$ such that $$ \max\{H_n(X+Y), H_n(φ(X,Y))\} \geq n(s+ε) $$ for all sufficiently large $n$, where the precise assumptions on $(X,Y)$ depend on the Frostman level. The proof introduces a novel multi-step entropy framework, combining the submodularity formula, the discretized entropy Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem, and state-of-the-art results on the Falconer distance problem, to reduce general forms to a diagonal core case.
As an application, we obtain discretized sum-product type estimates. In particular, for a $δ$-separated set $A\subseteq [0, 1]$ of cardinality $δ^{-s}$, satisfying certain non-concentration conditions, and a dense subset $G\subseteq A\times A$, there exists $ε=ε(s, φ)>0$ such that $$ E_δ(A+_GA) + E_δ(φ_G(A, A)) \ggδ^{-ε}(\#A) $$ for all $δ$ small enough. Here $E_δ(A)$ denotes the $δ$-covering number of $A$, $A+_GA:=\{x+y\colon (x, y)\in G\}$, and $φ_G(A,A):=\{φ(x, y)\colon (x, y)\in G\}$.
An elementary question of Erdős and Graham
Let $A_k=\{r(k-r): 1\leq r \leq k-1\}$. Erd\H os and Graham asked about the cardinality of the set of common elements. We answer this elementary question and apply our result to a sum-product type result.
Packing sets under finite groups via algebraic incidence structures
Let $G$ be a finite group acting on a vector space $V = \mathbb{F}_p^n$ over a prime field. Given finite sets $S \subset G$ and $E \subset V$, we study the restricted orbit union $S(E) = \bigcup_{g\in S} g(E)$ and establish quantitative lower bounds for $|S(E)|$ in terms of $|S|$, $|E|$, and natural structural conditions. This finite field packing problem has connections to distance geometry, configuration counting, and expanding graphs. For $G = SL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ acting on $\mathbb{F}_p^2$, we prove that $$|S(E)| \gg \min\left\lbrace p^2, \frac{|S||E|}{p^2}\right\rbrace,$$ which is sharp. Under geometric non-concentration conditions on $E$ and subgroup-avoidance hypotheses on $S$, we obtain a power-saving improvement of the form $$|S(E)|\gg \min \left\lbrace p^2, ~\max\left\lbrace\frac{|S||E|}{pk}, ~\frac{|S|^{\frac{1}{2}}|E|}{p^{\frac{1-ε}{2}}k^{\frac{1}{2}}}\right\rbrace \right\rbrace,$$ where $k$ bounds the radial multiplicity of $E$. For small sets $|E| \leq p$, we establish optimal bounds using weighted incidence theory. Analogous results are proved for the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}_1(\mathbb{F}_p)$ acting on $\mathbb{F}_p^3$. Our approach reformulates the problem as an incidence question in a bipartite action graph. The proofs combine Fourier analytic techniques, energy estimates, point-line incidence bounds, and area-energy inequalities for skew dot products. The methods extend classical sum-product type problems and incidence theory to noncommutative group actions.
Discretized sum-product type problems: Energy variants and Applications
In this paper, we provide estimates for the additive discretized energy of \[\sum_{c\in C} |\{(a_1, a_2, b_1, b_2)\in A^2\times B^2: |(a_1 +cb_1) - (a_2 + cb_2)|\le δ\}|_δ,\] that depend on non-concentration conditions of the sets. Our proof follows the Guth-Katz-Zahl approach (2021) with appropriate changes along the way clarifying and optimizing many of the steps. Several applications will also be discussed.

In 2017, by using the group theoretic approach, Bennett, Hart, Iosevich, Pakianathan, and Rudnev obtained a number of results on the distribution of simplices and sum-product type problems. The main purpose of this paper is to give a series of new applications of their powerful framework, namely, we focus on the product and quotient of distance sets, the $L^2$-norm of the direction set, and the $L^2$-norm of scales in difference sets.

The main results of this paper concern growth in sums of a $k$-convex function $f$. Firstly, we streamline the proof of a growth result for $f(A)$ where $A$ has small additive doubling, and improve the bound by removing logarithmic factors. The result yields an optimal bound for \[ |2^k f(A) - (2^k-1)f(A)|. \]
We also generalise a recent result of Hanson, Roche-Newton and Senger, by proving that for any finite $A\subset \mathbb{R}$
\[ | 2^k f(sA-sA) - (2^k-1) f(sA-sA)| \gg_s |A|^{2s} \] where $s = \frac{k+1}{2}$. This allows us to prove that, given any natural number $s \in \mathbb{N}$, there exists $m = m(s)$ such that if $A \subset \mathbb{R}$, then \begin{equation}\label{conj A-Aus} |(sA-sA)^{(m)}| \gg_s |A|^{s}. \end{equation}
This is progress towards a conjecture which states that the above inequality can be replaced with
\[|(A-A)^{(m)}| \gg_s |A|^{s}.\]
Developing methods of Solymosi, and Bloom and Jones, we present some new sum-product type results in the complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$ and in the function field $\mathbb{F}_q((t^{-1}))$.
On three-variable expanders over finite valuation rings
Let $\mathcal{R}$ be a finite valuation ring of order $q^r$. In this paper, we prove that for any quadratic polynomial $f(x,y,z) \in \mathcal{R}[x,y,z]$ that is of the form $axy+R(x)+S(y)+T(z)$ for some one-variable polynomials $R, S , T$, we have \[ |f(A,B,C)| \gg \min\left\{ q^r, \frac{|A||B||C|}{q^{2r-1}}\right\}\] for any $A, B, C \subset \mathcal{R}$. We also study the sum-product type problems over finite valuation ring $\mathcal{R}.$ More precisely, we show that for any $A \subset \mathcal{R}$ with $|A| \gg q^{r-1/3}$ then $$\max\{ |A \cdot A|, |A^d + A^d|\},\max\{ |A + A|, |A^2 + A^2|\},\max\{|A-A|,|AA+AA|\} \gg |A|^{2/3}q^{r/3},$$ and $|f(A) + A| \gg |A|^{2/3}q^{r/3}$ for any one variable quadratic polynomial $f$.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of "geodesic cover" for Fuchsian groups, which summons copies of fundamental polygons in the hyperbolic plane to cover pairs of representatives realizing distances in the corresponding hyperbolic surface. Then we use estimates of geodesic-covering numbers to study the distinct distances problem in hyperbolic surfaces. Especially, for $Y$ from a large class of hyperbolic surfaces, we establish the nearly optimal bound $\geq c(Y)N/\log N$ for distinct distances determined by any $N$ points in $Y$, where $c(Y)>0$ is some constant depending only on $Y$. In particular, for $Y$ being modular surface or standard regular of genus $g\geq 2$, we evaluate $c(Y)$ explicitly. We also derive new sum-product type estimates.

In this paper, we prove a new point-sphere incidence bound in vector spaces over finite fields. More precisely, let $P$ be a set of points and $S$ be a set of spheres in $\mathbb{F}_q^d$. Suppose that $|P|, |S|\le N$, we prove that the number of incidences between $P$ and $S$ satisfies \[I(P, S)\le N^2q^{-1}+q^{\frac{d-1}{2}}N,\] under some conditions on $d, q$, and radii. This improves the known upper bound $N^2q^{-1}+q^{\frac{d}{2}}N$ in the literature. As an application, we show that for $A\subset \mathbb{F}_q$ with $q^{1/2}\ll |A|\ll q^{\frac{d^2+1}{2d^2}}$, one has \[\max \left\lbrace |A+A|,~ |dA^2|\right\rbrace \gg \frac{|A|^d}{q^{\frac{d-1}{2}}}.\] This improves earlier results on this sum-product type problem over arbitrary finite fields.

For a bivariate $P(x,y) \in \mathbb{R}[x,y]\setminus (\mathbb{R}[x] \cup \mathbb{R}[y])$, our first result shows that for all finite $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}$, $|P(A,A)|\geq α|A|^{5/4}$ with $α=α(\mathrm{deg} P) \in \mathbb{R}^{>0}$ unless $$ P(x,y)=f(γu(x)+δu(y)) \text{ or } P(x,y)=f(u^m(x)u^n(y)) $$ for some univariate $f, u \in \mathbb{R}[t]\setminus \mathbb{R}$, constants $γ, δ\in \mathbb{R}^{\neq 0}$, and $m, n\in \mathbb{N}^{\geq 1}$. This resolves the symmetric nonexpanders classification problem proposed by de Zeeuw. Our second and third results are sum-product type theorems for two polynomials, generalizing the classical result by Erdos and Szemerédi as well as a theorem by Shen. We also obtained similar results for $\mathbb{C}$, and from this deduce results for fields of characteristic $0$ and fields of large prime characteristic. The proofs of our results use tools from semialgebraic/o-minimal geometry.
New Expander Bounds from Affine Group Energy
The purpose of this article is to further explore how the structure of the affine group can be used to deduce new incidence theorems, and to explore sum-product type applications of these incidence bounds, building on the recent work of Rudnev and Shkredov.
We bound the energy of several systems of lines, in some cases obtaining a better energy bound than the corresponding bounds obtained by Rudnev and Shkredov by exploiting a connection with collinear quadruples.
Our motivation for seeking to generalise and improve the incidence bound obtained by Rudnev and Shkredov comes from possible applications to sum-product problems. For example, we prove that, for any finite $A \subset \mathbb R$ the following superquadratic bound holds:
\[
\left| \left \{ \frac{ab-cd}{a-c} : a,b,c,d \in A \right \} \right| \gg |A|^{2+\frac{1}{14}}.
\]
This improves the previously known bound with exponent $2$. We also give a threshold-beating asymmetric sum-product estimate for sets with small sum set by proving that there exists a positive constant $c$ such that for all finite $A,B \subset \mathbb R$,
\[
|A+A| \ll K|A| \Rightarrow |AB| \gg_K |A||B|^{1/2+c}.
\]
Expanding Polynomials and Pairs of Polynomials in Characteristic 0
We begin a generalized study of sum-product type phenomenon in different fields by considering pairs $P(x,y)$ and $Q(x,y)$ of two variable polynomials that simultaneously exhibit small symmetric expansion. Our first result is that such $P(x,y)$ and $Q(x,y)$ over $\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{C}$ have very similar structure, obtained by employing semi-algebraic geometry/o-minimality. Then using model-theoretic transfer and basic Galois theory we deduce results for fields of characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p$ when $p$ is large.
We obtain as corollaries a generalization of Elekes-Rónyai type structural results to arbitrary characteristic 0 fields, and a strengthening of these classic results in a symmetric case of natural interest. We note a related bound of $5/4$ in the exponent for the sum-product problem in finite fields of large characteristic, although a lower bound for this characteristic cannot be computed from our methods.
Sum-Product Type Estimates over Finite Fields
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field with $q$ elements where $q=p^l$ is a prime power. Using Fourier analytic tools with a third moment method, we obtain sum-product type estimates for subsets of $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, we prove that if $A\subset \mathbb{F}_q$, then $$|AA+A|,|A(A+A)|\gg\min\left\{q, \frac{|A|^2}{q^{\frac{1}{2}}} \right\},$$ so that if $A\ge q^{\frac{3}{4}}$, then $|AA+A|,|A(A+A)|\gg q$.
On growth rate in $SL_2(\mathbf{F}_p)$, the affine group and sum-product type implications
This paper aims to study in more depth the relation between growth in matrix groups ${\rm SL_2}(\mathbf{F})$ and ${\rm Aff}(\mathbf{F})$ over a field $\mathbf{F}$ by multiplication and geometric incidence estimates, associated with the sum-product phenomenon over $\mathbf{F}$. It presents streamlined proofs of Helfgott's theorems on growth in the $\mathbf{F}_p$-case, which avoid sum-product estimates. For ${\rm SL_2}(\mathbf{F}_p)$, for sets exceeding in size some absolute constant, we improve the lower bound $\frac{1}{1512}$ for the growth exponent, due to Kowalski, to $\frac{1}{21}.$ For the affine group we fetch a sharp theorem of Szőnyi on the number of directions, determined by a point set in $\mathbf{F}_p^2$.
We then focus on ${\rm Aff}(\mathbf{F})$ and present a new incidence bound between a set of points and a set of lines in $\mathbf{F}^2$, which explicitly depends on the energy of the set of lines as affine transformations under composition. This bound, strong when the number of lines is considerably smaller than the number of points, yields generalizations of structural theorems of Elekes and Murphy on rich lines in grids.
In the special case when the set of lines is also a grid -- relating back to sum-products -- we use growth in ${\rm Aff}(\mathbf{R})$ to obtain a subthreshold estimate on the energy of the set of lines. This yields a unified way to break the ice in various threshold sum-product type energy inequalities. We show this in applications to energy estimates, corresponding to sets $A(A+ A)$, $A+AA$ (also embracing asymmetric versions) as well as $A+B$ when $A$ has small multiplicative doubling and $\sqrt{|A|} \le |B|\le|A|^{1+o(1)}$.
Szemerédi-Trotter type results in arbitrary finite fields
Let $q$ be a power of a prime and $\mathbb{F}_q$ the finite field consisting of $q$ elements. We prove explicit upper bounds on the number of incidences between lines and Cartesian products in $\mathbb{F}_q^2$. We also use our results on point-line incidences to give new sum-product type estimates concerning sums of reciprocals.
Point-plane incidences and some applications in positive characteristic

The point-plane incidence theorem states that the number of incidences between $n$ points and $m\geq n$ planes in the projective three-space over a field $F$, is $$O\left(m\sqrt{n}+ m k\right),$$ where $k$ is the maximum number of collinear points, with the extra condition $n< p^2$ if $F$ has characteristic $p>0$. This theorem also underlies a state-of-the-art Szemerédi-Trotter type bound for point-line incidences in $F^2$, due to Stevens and de Zeeuw.
This review focuses on some recent, as well as new, applications of these bounds that lead to progress in several open geometric questions in $F^d$, for $d=2,3,4$. These are the problem of the minimum number of distinct nonzero values of a non-degenerate bilinear form on a point set in $d=2$, the analogue of the Erd\H os distinct distance problem in $d=2,3$ and additive energy estimates for sets, supported on a paraboloid and sphere in $d=3,4$. It avoids discussing sum-product type problems (corresponding to the special case of incidences with Cartesian products), which have lately received more attention.
Cayley Digraphs of Matrix Rings over Finite Fields
We use the \emph{unit-graphs} and the \emph{special unit-digraphs} on matrix rings to show that every $n \times n$ nonzero matrix over $\Bbb F_q$ can be written as a sum of two $\operatorname{SL}_n$-matrices when $n>1$. We compute the eigenvalues of these graphs in terms of Kloosterman sums and study their spectral properties; and prove that if $X$ is a subset of $\operatorname{Mat}_2 (\Bbb F_q)$ with size $|X| > \frac{2 q^3 \sqrt{q}}{q - 1}$, then $X$ contains at least two distinct matrices whose difference has determinant $α$ for any $α\in \Bbb F_q^{\ast}$. Using this result we also prove a sum-product type result: if $A,B,C,D \subseteq \Bbb F_q$ satisfy $\sqrt[4]{|A||B||C||D|}= Ω(q^{0.75})$ as $q \rightarrow \infty$, then $(A - B)(C - D)$ equals all of $\Bbb F_q$. In particular, if $A$ is a subset of $\Bbb F_q$ with cardinality $|A| > \frac{3} {2} q^{\frac{3}{4}}$, then the subset $(A - A) (A - A)$ equals all of $\Bbb F_q$. We also recover a classical result: every element in any finite ring of odd order can be written as the sum of two units.
