Modules of differential operators of order 2 on Coxeter arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the modules of differential operators of order 2 on the classical Coxeter arrangements are free by exhibiting bases. For this purpose, we use Cauchy-Sylvester's theorem on compound determinants and Saito-Holm's criterion. In the case type $A$, we apply Cauchy-Sylvester's theorem on compound determinants to Vandermond determinant. By using the Schur polynomials, we define operators which form a part of a basis of modules of differential operators on the classical Coxeter arrangements of type $A$. In the cases of type $B$ and type $D$, the proofs go similarly to the case of type $A$ with some adjustments of operators and determinants.
Radford bases and Schützenberger's Factorizations
In this paper, we present Schützenberger's factorization in different combinatorial contexts and show that its validity is not restricted to these cases but can be extended to every Lie algebra endowed with an ordered basis. We also expose some elements of the relations between the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt bases of the enveloping algebra and their dual families.

Ordered Bell numbers, Hermite polynomials, Skew Young Tableaux, and Borel orbits
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give three interpretations of the number $b$ of orbits of the Borel subgroup of upper triangular matrices on the variety $\ms{X}$ of complete quadrics. First, we show that $b$ is equal to the number of standard Young tableaux on skew-diagrams. Then, we relate $b$ to certain values of a modified Hermite polynomial. Third, we relate $b$ to a certain cell decomposition on $\ms{X}$ previously studied by De Concini, Springer, and Strickland. Using these, we give asymptotic estimates for $b$ as the dimension of the quadrics increases.

The regular number of a graph
Published in Journal of Discrete Mathematical Sciences and Cryptography, vol. 15, no. 2-3, pp. 149-157, 2012 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a simple undirected graph. The regular number of $G$ is defined to be the minimum number of subsets into which the edge set of $G$ can be partitioned so that the subgraph induced by each subset is regular. In this work, we obtain the regular number of some families of graphs and discuss some general bounds on this parameter. Also, some of the lower or upper bounds proved in \cite{Kulli:Janakiram:Iyer:2001} are shown here to hold with equality.

Stability results for random discrete structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two years ago, Conlon and Gowers, and Schacht proved general theorems that allow one to transfer a large class of extremal combinatorial results from the deterministic to the probabilistic setting. Even though the two papers solve the same set of long-standing open problems in probabilistic combinatorics, the methods used in them vary significantly and therefore yield results that are not comparable in certain aspects. The theorem of Schacht can be applied in a more general setting and yields stronger probability estimates, whereas the one of Conlon and Gowers also implies random versions of some structural statements such as the famous stability theorem of Erdos and Simonovits. In this paper, we bridge the gap between these two transference theorems. Building on the approach of Schacht, we prove a general theorem that allows one to transfer deterministic stability results to the probabilistic setting that is somewhat more general and stronger than the one obtained by Conlon and Gowers. We then use this theorem to derive several new results, among them a random version of the Erdos-Simonovits stability theorem for arbitrary graphs. The main new idea, a refined approach to multiple exposure when considering subsets of binomial random sets, may be of independent interest.
Optimal Probability Inequalities for Random Walks related to Problems in Extremal Combinatorics
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 26 (2012), 828-837 • View Publication • BIB
Let S_n=X_1+...+X_n be a sum of independent symmetric random variables such that |X_{i}|\leq 1. Denote by W_n=ε_{1}+...+ε_{n} a sum of independent random variables such that \prob{\eps_i = \pm 1} = 1/2. We prove that \mathbb{P}{S_{n} \in A} \leq \mathbb{P}{cW_k \in A}, where A is either an interval of the form [x, \infty) or just a single point. The inequality is exact and the optimal values of c and k are given explicitly. It improves Kwapień's inequality in the case of the Rademacher series. We also provide a new and very short proof of the Littlewood-Offord problem without using Sperner's Theorem. Finally, an extension to odd Lipschitz functions is given.

Sparse Matrix Decompositions and Graph Characterizations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The question of when zeros (i.e., sparsity) in a positive definite matrix $A$ are preserved in its Cholesky decomposition, and vice versa, was addressed by Paulsen et al. in the Journal of Functional Analysis (85, pp151-178). In particular, they prove that for the pattern of zeros in $A$ to be retained in the Cholesky decomposition of $A$, the pattern of zeros in $A$ has to necessarily correspond to a chordal (or decomposable) graph associated with a specific type of vertex ordering. This result therefore yields a characterization of chordal graphs in terms of sparse positive definite matrices. It has also proved to be extremely useful in probabilistic and statistical analysis of Markov random fields where zeros in positive definite correlation matrices are intimately related to the notion of stochastic independence. Now, consider a positive definite matrix $A$ and its Cholesky decomposition given by $A = LDL^T$, where $L$ is lower triangular with unit diagonal entries, and $D$ a diagonal matrix with positive entries. In this paper, we prove that a necessary and sufficient condition for zeros (i.e., sparsity) in a positive definite matrix $A$ to be preserved in its associated Cholesky matrix $L$, \, and in addition also preserved in the inverse of the Cholesky matrix $L^{-1}$, is that the pattern of zeros corresponds to a co-chordal or homogeneous graph associated with a specific type of vertex ordering. We proceed to provide a second characterization of this class of graphs in terms of determinants of submatrices that correspond to cliques in the graph. These results add to the growing body of literature in the field of sparse matrix decompositions, and also prove to be critical ingredients in the probabilistic analysis of an important class of Markov random fields.

On the purity of maximal weakly separated set families
We present a short proof that every maximal family of weakly separated subsets of $[n]$ of cardinality between $[a,b]$ have the same size. Our proof is direct and only uses elementary combinatorics of lattice paths.

Homogeneous components in the moduli space of sheaves and Virasoro characters
Published in J. Geom. Phys. 62 (2012), no. 7, 1652--1664 • View Publication • BIB
The moduli space $\mathcal M(r,n)$ of framed torsion free sheaves on the projective plane with rank $r$ and second Chern class equal to $n$ has the natural action of the $(r+2)$-dimensional torus. In this paper, we look at the fixed point set of different one-dimensional subtori in this torus. We prove that in the homogeneous case the generating series of the numbers of the irreducible components has a beautiful decomposition into an infinite product. In the case of odd $r$ these infinite products coincide with certain Virasoro characters. We also propose a conjecture in a general quasihomogeneous case.

Semigroups and sequential importance sampling for multiway tables
When an interval of integers between the lower bound $l_i$ and the upper bound $u_i$ is the support of the marginal distribution $n_i|(n_{i-1}, ...,n_1)$, Chen et al, 2005 noticed that sampling from the interval at each step, for $n_i$ during a sequential importance sampling (SIS) procedure, always produces a table which satisfies the marginal constraints. However, in general, the interval may not be equal to the support of the marginal distribution. In this case, the SIS procedure may produce tables which do not satisfy the marginal constraints, leading to rejection Chen et al 2006. In this paper we consider the uniform distribution as the target distribution. First we show that if we fix the number of rows and columns of the design matrix of the model for contingency tables then there exists a polynomial time algorithm in terms of the input size to sample a table from the set of all tables satisfying all marginals defined by the given model via the SIS procedure without rejection. We then show experimentally that in general the SIS procedure may have large rejection rates even with small tables. Further we show that in general the classical SIS procedure in Chen et al, 2005 can have a large rejection rate whose limit is one. When estimating the number of tables in our simulation study, we used the univariate and bivariate logistic regression models since under this model the SIS procedure seems to have higher rate of rejections even with small tables.

Sarkozy's Theorem for P-Intersective Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a necessary and sufficient condition on a polynomial $h\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ to guarantee that every set of natural numbers of positive upper density contains a nonzero difference of the form $h(p)$ for some prime $p$. Moreover, we establish a quantitative estimate on the size of the largest subset of ${1,2,\dots,N}$ which lacks the desired arithmetic structure, showing that if deg$(h)=k$, then the density of such a set is at most a constant times $(\log N)^{-c}$ for any $c<1/(2k-2)$. We also discuss how an improved version of this result for $k=2$ and a relative version in the primes can be obtained with some additional known methods.

The $(q,t)$-Gaussian Process
We introduce a two-parameter deformation of the classical Bosonic, Fermionic, and Boltzmann Fock spaces that is a refinement of the $q$-Fock space of [BS91]. Starting with a real, separable Hilbert space $H$, we construct the $(q,t)$-Fock space and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators, $\{a_{q,t}(h)^\ast\}_{h\in H}$ and $\{a_{q,t}(h)\}_{h\in H}$, satifying the $(q,t)$-commutation relation $a_{q,t}(f)a_{q,t}(g)^\ast-q \,a_{q,t}(g)^\ast a_{q,t}(f)= <f,g>_{_H}\, t^{N},$ for $h,g\in H$, with $N$ denoting the number operator. Interpreting the bounded linear operators on the $(q,t)$-Fock space as non-commutative random variables, the analogue of the Gaussian random variable is given by the deformed field operator $s_{q,t}(h):=a_{q,t}(h)+a_{q,t}(h)^\ast$, for $h\in H$. The resulting refinement is particularly natural, as the moments of $s_{q,t}(h)$ are encoded by the joint statistics of crossings \emph{and nestings} in pair partitions. Furthermore, the orthogonal polynomial sequence associated with the normalized $(q,t)$-Gaussian $s_{q,t}$ is that of the $(q,t)$-Hermite orthogonal polynomials, a deformation of the $q$-Hermite sequence that is given by the recurrence $zH_n(z;q,t)=H_{n+1}(z;q,t)+[n]_{q,t}H_{n-1}(z;q,t),$ with $H_0(z;q,t)=1$, $H_1(z;q,t)=z$, and $[n]_{q,t}=\sum_{i=1}^n q^{i-1}t^{n-i}$. The $q=0<t$ specialization yields a new single-parameter deformation of the full Boltzmann Fock space of free probability. The probability measure associated with the corresponding deformed semicircular operator turns out to be encoded, in various forms, via the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the $t$-Airy function, the $t$-Catalan numbers of Carlitz-Riordan, and the first-order statistics of the reduced Wigner process.

On Schur function expansions of Thom polynomials
We discuss computations of the Thom polynomials of singularity classes of maps in the basis of Schur functions. We survey the known results about the bound on the length and a rectangle containment for partitions appearing in such Schur function expansions. We describe several recursions for the coefficients. For some singularities, we give old and new computations of their Thom polynomials.

Kostant's Weight Multiplicity Formula and the Fibonacci and Lucas Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the weight $λ$ which is the sum of all simple roots of a simple Lie algebra. Using Kostant's weight multiplicity formula we describe and enumerate the contributing terms to the multiplicity of the zero weight in the representation with highest weight $λ$. We prove that in Lie algebras of type $A$ and $B$, the number of contributing terms to the multiplicity of the zero-weight space in the representation with highest weight $λ$ is given by a Fibonacci number, and that in Lie algebras of type $C$ and $D$, the analogous result is given by a multiple of a Lucas number.

Explicit monomial expansions of the generating series for connection coefficients
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is devoted to the explicit computation of generating series for the connection coefficients of two commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group, the class algebra and the double coset algebra. As shown by Hanlon, Stanley and Stembridge (1992), these series gives the spectral distribution of some random matrices that are of interest to statisticians. Morales and Vassilieva (2009, 2011) found explicit formulas for these generating series in terms of monomial symmetric functions by introducing a bijection between partitioned hypermaps on (locally) orientable surfaces and some decorated forests and trees. Thanks to purely algebraic means, we recover the formula for the class algebra and provide a new simpler formula for the double coset algebra. As a salient ingredient, we derive a new explicit expression for zonal polynomials indexed by partitions of type [a,b,1^(n-a-b)].

We prove that if G is an (n,d,lambda)-graph (a d-regular graph on n vertices, all of whose non-trivial eigenvalues are at most lambda) and the following conditions are satisfied: 1. d/lambda >= (log n)^{1+epsilon} for some constant epsilon>0; 2.log d * lod (d/lambda) >> log n, then the number of Hamilton cycles in G is n!(d/n)^n(1+o(1))^n.

Vanishing ideals over graphs and even cycles
Published in Comm. Algebra 43 (2015), no. 3, 1050--1075 • View Publication • BIB
Let X be an algebraic toric set in a projective space over a finite field. We study the vanishing ideal, I(X), of X and show some useful degree bounds for a minimal set of generators of I(X). We give an explicit description of a set of generators of I(X), when X is the algebraic toric set associated to an even cycle or to a connected bipartite graph with pairwise disjoint even cycles. In this case, a fomula for the regularity of I(X) is given. We show an upper bound for this invariant, when X is associated to a (not necessarily connected) bipartite graph. The upper bound is sharp if the graph is connected. We are able to show a formula for the length of the parameterized linear code associated with any graph, in terms of the number of bipartite and non-bipartite components.
