Noncommutative invariants of dihedral groups
We consider the 2-generated free metabelian associative and Lie algebras over the complex field and the invariants of the dihedral groups of finite order acting on these algebras. In the associative case we find a finite set of generators of the algebra of invariants. In the Lie case, when the algebra of invariants is not finitely generated, we give a minimal system of generators of the invariants in the commutator ideal as a module of the algebra of the invariants in the polynomial algebra in two variables. In both associative and Lie cases we compute the Hilbert series of the algebras of invariants.

Graded Algebras, Algebraic Functions, Planar Trees, and Elliptic Integrals
Published • View PublicationBIB
This article surveys results on graded algebras and their Hilbert series. We give simple constructions of finitely generated graded associative algebras $R$ with Hilbert series $H(R,t)$ very close to an arbitrary power series $a(t)$ with exponentially bounded nonnegative integer coefficients. Then we summarize some related facts on algebras with polynomial identity. Further we discuss the problem how to find series $a(t)$ which are rational/algebraic/transcendental over ${\mathbb Q}(t)$. Applying a classical result of Fatou we conclude that if a finitely generated graded algebra has a finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, then its Hilbert series is either rational or transcendental. In particular the same dichotomy holds for the Hilbert series of a finitely generated algebra with polynomial identity. We show how to use planar rooted trees to produce algebraic power series. Finally we survey some results on noncommutative invariant theory which show that we can obtain as Hilbert series various algebraic functions and even elliptic integrals.
A Diophantine transport problem from 2016 and its possible solution in 1903
Published in Math. and Education in Math., Proc. of the Forty-ninth Spring Conf. of the Union of Bulgar. Mathematicians, 2020, 89-113 • Search Publication
Motivated by a recent Diophantine transport problem about how to transport profitably a group of persons or objects, we survey classical facts about solving systems of linear Diophantine equations and inequalities in nonnegative integers. We emphasize on the method of Elliott from 1903 and its further developed by MacMahon in his ``$Ω$-Calculus'' or Partition Analysis. As an illustration we obtain the solution of the considered transport problem in terms of a formal power series in several variables which is an expansion of a rational function of a special form.

The Bulgarian solitaire and the mathematics around it
Published in Math. and Education in Math., Proc. of the 44-th Spring Conf. of the Union of Bulgar. Mathematicians, SOK-Kamchia, April 2-6, 2015, 79-91 • Search Publication
The Bulgarian solitaire is a mathematical card game played by one person. A pack of n cards is divided into several decks (or "piles"). Each move consists of the removing of one card from each deck and collecting the removed cards to form a new deck. The game ends when the same position occurs twice. It has turned out that when n=k(k+1)/2 is a triangular number, the game reaches the same stable configuration with size of the piles 1,2,...,k. The purpose of the paper is to tell the (quite amusing) story of the game and to discuss mathematical problems related with the Bulgarian solitaire. The paper is dedicated to the memory of Borislav Bojanov (1944-2009), a great mathematician, person, and friend, and one of the main protagonists in the story of the Bulgarian solitaire.
Computing with rational symmetric functions and applications to invariant theory and PI-algebras
Let the formal power series f in d variables with coefficients in an arbitrary field be a symmetric function decomposed as a series of Schur functions, and let f be a rational function whose denominator is a product of binomials of the form (1 - monomial). We use a classical combinatorial method of Elliott of 1903 further developed in the Partition Analysis of MacMahon in 1916 to compute the generating function of the multiplicities (i.e., the coefficients) of the Schur functions in the expression of f. It is a rational function with denominator of a similar form as f. We apply the method to several problems on symmetric algebras, as well as problems in classical invariant theory, algebras with polynomial identities, and noncommutative invariant theory.

Cocharacters of polynomial identities of block triangular matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an algorithm which calculates the generating function of the cocharacter sequence of the polynomial identities of the algebra of upper block triangular (p+2q) x (p+2q) matrices over a field of characteristic zero with diagonal consisting of p copies of 1 x 1 and q copies of 2 x 2 matrices. We have found the explicit form of the multiplicities and their asymptotic behaviour for small values of p and q.
Shirshov's theorem and division rings that are left algebraic over a subfield
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let D be a division ring. We say that D is left algebraic over a (not necessarily central) subfield K of D if every x in D satisfies a polynomial equation x^n + a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+...+a_0=0 with a_0,...,a_{n-1} in K. We show that if D is a division ring that is left algebraic over a subfield K of bounded degree d then D is at most d^2-dimensional over its center. This generalizes a result of Kaplansky. For the proof we give a new version of the combinatorial theorem of Shirshov that sufficiently long words over a finite alphabet contain either a q-decomposable subword or a high power of a non-trivial subword. We show that if the word does not contain high powers then the factors in the q-decomposition may be chosen to be of almost the same length. We conclude by giving a list of problems for algebras that are left algebraic over a commutative subring.

Algebraic Properties of Codimension Series of PI-Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a PI-algebra R over a field of characteristic 0 let T(R) be the T-ideal of the polynomial identities of R and let c(R,t) be the codimension series of R (i.e., the generating function of the codimension sequence of R). Let A, B and R be PI-algebras such that T(R)=T(A)T(B). We show that if c(A,t) and c(B,t) are rational functions, then c(R,t) is also rational. If c(A,t) is rational and c(B,t) is algebraic, then c(R,t) is also algebraic. The proof is based on the fact that the product of two exponential generating functions behaves as the exponential generating function of the sequence of the degrees of the outer tensor products of two sequences of representations of symmetric groups.

Cocharacters of polynomial identities of upper triangular matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an easy algorithm which calculates the generating function of the cocharacter sequence of the T-ideal of the polynomial identities of the algebra of upper triangular matrices over a field of characteristic zero. Applying this algorithm we have found the explicit form of the multiplicities in two cases: (i) for the "largest" partitions; (ii) for matrices of small size and for all partitions.

Automorphisms of polynomial algebras and Dirichlet series
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let GF(q)[x,y] be the polynomial algebra in two variables over the finite field GF(q) with q elements. We give an exact formula and the asymptotics for the number p(n) of automorphisms (f,g) of GF(q)[x,y] such that max{deg(f),deg(g)}=n. We describe also the Dirichlet series generating function p(1)/1^s+p(2)/2^s+p(3)/3^s+.... The same results hold for the automorphisms of the free associative algebra GF(q)<x,y>. We have also obtained analogues for free algebras with two generators in Nielsen - Schreier varieties of algebras.

Planar trees, free nonassociative algebras, invariants, and elliptic integrals
Published in Algebra Discrete Math. 2008, no. 2, 1-41 • Search Publication
We consider absolutely free nonassociative algebras and, more generally, absolutely free algebras with (maybe infinitely) many multilinear operations. Such algebras are described in terms of labeled reduced planar rooted trees. This allows to apply combinatorial techniques to study their Hilbert series and the asymptotics of their coefficients. These algebras satisfy the Nielsen-Schreier property and their subalgebras are also free. Then, over a field of characteristic 0, we investigate the subalgebras of invariants under the action of a linear group, their sets of free generators and their Hilbert series. It has turned out that, except in the trivial cases, the algebra of invariants is never finitely generated. In important partial cases the Hilbert series of the algebras of invariants and the generating functions of their sets of free generators are expressed in terms of elliptic integrals.

Multiplicities in the trace cocharacter sequence of two $4\times 4$ matrices
Published in Mediterr. J. Math. 2 (2005), 231-241 • View PublicationBIB
We find explicitly the generating functions of the multiplicities in the pure and mixed trace cocharacter sequences of two $4\times 4$ matrices over a field of characteristic 0. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the multiplicities and show that they behave as polynomials of 14th degree.
Multiplicities in the mixed trace cocharacter sequence of two $3\times 3$ matrices
Published in International J. Algebra and Computations 16 (2006), No. 2, 275-285 • View PublicationBIB
We find explicitly the multiplicities in the (mixed) trace cocharacter sequence of two $3\times 3$ matrices over a field of characteristic 0 and show that asymptotically they behave as polynomials of seventh degree. As a consequence we obtain also the multiplicities of certain irreducible characters in the cocharacter sequence of the polynomial identities of $3\times 3$ matrices.

Combinatorics of words and semigroup algebras which are sums of locally nilpotent subalgebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct new examples of non-nil algebras with any number of generators, which are direct sums of two locally nilpotent subalgebras. As all previously known examples, our examples are contracted semigroup algebras and the underlying semigroups are unions of locally nilpotent subsemigroups. In our constructions we make more transparent than in the past the close relationship between the considered problem and combinatorics of words.
