Dynamical sequences: closure properties and automatic identity proving
Given an algebraically closed field $K$, a dynamical sequence over $K$ is a $K$-valued sequence of the form $a(n):= f(φ^n(x_0))$, where $φ\colon X\to X$ and $f\colon X\to\mathbb{A}^1$ are rational maps defined over $K$, and $x_0\in X$ is a point whose forward orbit avoids the indeterminacy loci of $\varphi$ and $f$. Many classical sequences from number theory and algebraic combinatorics fall under this dynamical framework, and we show that the class of dynamical sequences enjoys numerous closure properties and encompasses all elliptic divisibility sequences, all Somos sequences, and all $C^n$- and $D^n$-finite sequences for all $n\ge 1$, as defined by Jiménez-Pastor, Nuspl, and Pillwein. We also give an algorithm for proving that two dynamical sequences are identical and illustrate how to use this algorithm by showing how to prove several classical combinatorial identities via this method.
There are no good infinite families of toric codes

Soprunov and Soprunova introduced the notion of a good infinite family of toric codes. We prove that such good families do not exist by proving a more general Szemerédi-type result: for all $c\in(0,1]$ and all positive integers $N$, subsets of density at least $c$ in $\{0,1,\dots,N-1\}^n$ contain hypercubes of arbitrarily large dimension as $n$ grows.

Counterexamples to a Conjecture of Dombi in Additive Number Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
We disprove a 2002 conjecture of Dombi from additive number theory. More precisely, we find examples of sets $A \subset \mathbb{N}$ with the property that $\mathbb{N} \setminus A$ is infinite, but the sequence $n \rightarrow |\{ (a,b,c) \, : \, n=a+b+c \text{ and } a,b,c \in A \}|$, counting the number of $3$-compositions using elements of $A$ only, is strictly increasing.

Quantum Grassmannians and their Associated Quantum Schubert Varieties at roots of unity
We study the PI degree of various quantum algebras at roots of unity, including quantum Grassmannians, quantum Schubert varieties, partition subalgebras, and their associated quantum affine spaces. By a theorem of De Concini and Procesi, the PI degree of partition subalgebras and their associated quantum affine spaces is controlled by skew-symmetric integral matrices associated to (Cauchon-Le) diagrams. We prove that the invariant factors of these matrices are always powers of 2. This allows us to compute explicitly the PI degree of partition subalgebras. Our results also apply to certain completely prime (homogeneous) quotients of partition subalgebras. In particular, our results allow us to extend results of Jakobsen and Jondrup regarding the PI degree of quantum determinantal rings at roots of unity [JJ01] and we present a method to construct an irreducible representation of maximal dimension for quantum determinantal ideals. Building on these results, we use the strong connection between partition subalgebras and quantum Schubert varieties through noncommutative dehomogenisation [LR08] to obtain expressions for the PI degree of quantum Schubert varieties. In particular, we compute the PI degree of quantum Grassmannians.

Computing the linear hull: Deciding Deterministic? and Unambiguous? for weighted automata over fields
Published in 2023 38th Annual ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science (LICS), Boston, MA, USA, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
The (left) linear hull of a weighted automaton over a field is a topological invariant. If the automaton is minimal, the linear hull can be used to determine whether or not the automaton is equivalent to a deterministic one. Furthermore, the linear hull can also be used to determine whether the minimal automaton is equivalent to an unambiguous one. We show how to compute the linear hull, and thus prove that it is decidable whether or not a given automaton over a number field is equivalent to a deterministic one. In this case we are also able to compute an equivalent deterministic automaton. We also show the analogous decidability and computability result for the unambiguous case. Our results resolve a problem posed in a 2006 survey by Lombardy and Sakarovitch.

Lie complexity of words
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite alphabet $Σ$ and a right-infinite word $\bf w$ over $Σ$, we define the Lie complexity function $L_{\bf w}:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{N}$, whose value at $n$ is the number of conjugacy classes (under cyclic shift) of length-$n$ factors $x$ of $\bf w$ with the property that every element of the conjugacy class appears in $\bf w$. We show that the Lie complexity function is uniformly bounded for words with linear factor complexity, and as a result we show that words of linear factor complexity have at most finitely many primitive factors $y$ with the property that $y^n$ is again a factor for every $n$. We then look at automatic sequences and show that the Lie complexity function of a $k$-automatic sequence is again $k$-automatic.

Rational dynamical systems, $S$-units, and $D$-finite power series
Published in Alg. Number Th. 15 (2021) 1699-1728 • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero and let $G$ be a finitely generated subgroup of the multiplicative group of $K$. We consider $K$-valued sequences of the form $a_n:=f(\varphi^n(x_0))$, where $\varphi\colon X\to X$ and $f\colon X\to\mathbb{P}^1$ are rational maps defined over $K$ and $x_0\in X$ is a point whose forward orbit avoids the indeterminacy loci of $\varphi$ and $f$. Many classical sequences from number theory and algebraic combinatorics fall under this dynamical framework, and we show that the set of $n$ for which $a_n\in G$ is a finite union of arithmetic progressions along with a set of Banach density zero. In addition, we show that if $a_n\in G$ for every $n$ and $X$ is irreducible and the $\varphi$ orbit of $x$ is Zariski dense in $X$ then there are a multiplicative torus $\mathbb{G}_m^d$ and maps $Ψ:\mathbb{G}_m^d \to \mathbb{G}_m^d$ and $g:\mathbb{G}_m^d \to \mathbb{G}_m$ such that $a_n = g\circ Ψ^n(y)$ for some $y\in \mathbb{G}_m^d$. We then obtain results about the coefficients of $D$-finite power series using these facts.

A refinement of Christol's theorem for algebraic power series
Published • View PublicationBIB
A famous result of Christol gives that a power series $F(t)=\sum_{n\ge 0} f(n)t^n$ with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$ is algebraic over the field of rational functions in $t$ if and only if there is a finite-state automaton accepting the base-$p$ digits of $n$ as input and giving $f(n)$ as output for every $n\ge 0$. An extension of Christol's theorem, giving a complete description of the algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, was later given by Kedlaya. When one looks at the support of an algebraic power series, that is the set of $n$ for which $f(n)\neq 0$, a well-known dichotomy for sets generated by finite-state automata shows that the support set is either sparse---with the number of $n\le x$ for which $f(n)\neq 0$ bounded by a polynomial in $\log(x)$---or it is reasonably large in the sense that the number of $n\le x$ with $f(n)\neq 0$ grows faster than $x^α$ for some positive $α$. The collection of algebraic power series with sparse supports forms a ring and we give a purely algebraic characterization of this ring in terms of Artin-Schreier extensions and we extend this to the context of Kedlaya's work on generalized power series.
Congruences modulo cyclotomic polynomials and algebraic independence for $q$-series
We prove congruence relations modulo cyclotomic polynomials for multisums of $q$-factorial ratios, therefore generalizing many well-known $p$-Lucas congruences. Such congruences connect various classical generating series to their $q$-analogs. Using this, we prove a propagation phenomenon: when these generating series are algebraically independent, this is also the case for their $q$-analogs.

We prove in this paper that a multivariate D-finite power series with coefficients from a finite set is rational. This generalizes a rationality theorem of van der Poorten and Shparlinski in 1996.

Algebraic independence of $G$-functions and congruences "à la Lucas"
We develop a new method for proving algebraic independence of $G$-functions. Our approach rests on the following observation: $G$-functions do not always come with a single linear differential equation, but also sometimes with an infinite family of linear difference equations associated with the Frobenius that are obtained by reduction modulo prime ideals. When these linear difference equations have order one, the coefficients of the $G$-function satisfy congruences reminiscent of a classical theorem of Lucas on binomial coefficients. We use this to derive a Kolchin-like algebraic independence criterion. We show the relevance of this criterion by proving, using p-adic tools, that many classical families of $G$-functions turn out to satisfy congruences "à la Lucas".

Integral Cayley graphs and groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We solve two open problems regarding the classification of certain classes of Cayley graphs with integer eigenvalues. We first classify all finite groups that have a "non-trivial" Cayley graph with integer eigenvalues, thus solving a problem proposed by Abdollahi and Jazaeri. The notion of Cayley integral groups was introduced by Klotz and Sander. These are groups for which every Cayley graph has only integer eigenvalues. In the second part of the paper, all Cayley integral groups are determined.

A problem around Mahler functions
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero and $k$ and $l$ be two multiplicatively independent positive integers. We prove the following result that was conjectured by Loxton and van der Poorten during the Eighties: a power series $F(z)\in K[[z]]$ satisfies both a $k$- and a $l$-Mahler type functional equation if and only if it is a rational function.
Shirshov's theorem and division rings that are left algebraic over a subfield
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let D be a division ring. We say that D is left algebraic over a (not necessarily central) subfield K of D if every x in D satisfies a polynomial equation x^n + a_{n-1}x^{n-1}+...+a_0=0 with a_0,...,a_{n-1} in K. We show that if D is a division ring that is left algebraic over a subfield K of bounded degree d then D is at most d^2-dimensional over its center. This generalizes a result of Kaplansky. For the proof we give a new version of the combinatorial theorem of Shirshov that sufficiently long words over a finite alphabet contain either a q-decomposable subword or a high power of a non-trivial subword. We show that if the word does not contain high powers then the factors in the q-decomposition may be chosen to be of almost the same length. We conclude by giving a list of problems for algebras that are left algebraic over a commutative subring.

On the set of zero coefficients of a function satisfying a linear differential equation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero and suppose that $f:\mathbb{N}\to K$ satisfies a recurrence of the form $$f(n)\ =\ \sum_{i=1}^d P_i(n) f(n-i),$$ for $n$ sufficiently large, where $P_1(z),...,P_d(z)$ are polynomials in $K[z]$. Given that $P_d(z)$ is a nonzero constant polynomial, we show that the set of $n\in \mathbb{N}$ for which $f(n)=0$ is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions and a finite set. This generalizes the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem, which assumes that $f(n)$ satisfies a linear recurrence. We discuss examples and connections to the set of zero coefficients of a power series satisfying a homogeneous linear differential equation with rational function coefficients.
Non-Holonomicity of Sequences Defined via Elementary Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new method for proving non-holonomicity of sequences, which is based on results about the number of zeros of elementary and of analytic functions. Our approach is applicable to sequences that are defined as the values of an elementary function at positive integral arguments. We generalize several recent results; e.g., non-holonomicity of the logarithmic sequence is extended to rational functions involving $\log n$. Moreover, we show that the sequence that arises from evaluating the Riemann zeta function at odd integers is not holonomic.

Counting Rooted Trees: The Universal Law t(n) ~ C ρ^{-n} n^{-3/2}

Combinatorial classes T that are recursively defined using combinations of the standard multiset, sequence, directed cycle and cycle constructions, and their restrictions, have generating series T(z) with a positive radius of convergence; for most of these a simple test can be used to quickly show that the form of the asymptotics is the same as that for the class of rooted trees: C ρ^{-n} n^{-3/2} where ρis the radius of convergence of T.

The Positivity Set of a Recurrence Sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider real sequences $(f_n)$ that satisfy a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. We show that the density of the positivity set of such a sequence always exists. In the special case where the sequence has no positive dominating characteristic root, we establish that the density is positive. Furthermore, we determine the values that can occur as density of such a positivity set, both for the special case just mentioned and in general.
