Lipschitz geometry and combinatorics of abnormal surface germs

We study outer Lipschitz geometry of real semialgebraic or, more general, definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure over the reals, surface germs. In particular, any definable Hölder triangle is either Lipschitz normally embedded or contains some "abnormal" arcs. We show that abnormal arcs constitute finitely many "abnormal zones" in the space of all arcs, and investigate geometric and combinatorial properties of abnormal surface germs. We establish a strong relation between geometry and combinatorics of abnormal Hölder triangles.
Toric cubes are closed balls
We prove that toric cubes, which are images of $[0,1]^d$ under monomial maps, are the closures of graphs of monotone maps, and in particular semi-algebraically homeomorphic to closed balls.
A Helly-type theorem for semi-monotone sets and monotone maps

We consider sets and maps defined over an o-minimal structure over the reals, such as real semi-algebraic or subanalytic sets. A {\em monotone map} is a multi-dimensional generalization of a usual univariate monotone function, while the closure of the graph of a monotone map is a generalization of a compact convex set. In a particular case of an identically constant function, such a graph is called a {\em semi-monotone set}. Graphs of monotone maps are, generally, non-convex, and their intersections, unlike intersections of convex sets, can be topologically complicated. In particular, such an intersection is not necessarily the graph of a monotone map. Nevertheless, we prove a Helly-type theorem, which says that for a finite family of subsets of $\Real^n$, if all intersections of subfamilies, with cardinalities at most $n+1$, are non-empty and graphs of monotone maps, then the intersection of the whole family is non-empty and the graph of a monotone map.
Some lower bounds in the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for flag varieties

The B. and M. Shapiro conjecture stated that all solutions of the Schubert Calculus problems associated with real points on the rational normal curve should be real. For Grassmannians, it was proved by Mukhin, Tarasov and Varchenko. For flag varieties, Sottile found a counterexample and suggested that all solutions should be real under certain monotonicity conditions. In this paper, we compute lower bounds on the number of real solutions for some special cases of the B. and M. Shapiro conjecture for flag varieties, when Sottile's monotonicity conditions are not satisfied.

We study the map which sends vectors of polynomials into their Wronski determinants. This defines a projection map of a Grassmann variety which we call a Wronski map. Our main result is computation of degrees of the real Wronski maps. Connections with real algebraic geometry and control theory are described.
