Mixed partition functions and exponentially bounded edge-connection rank
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study graph parameters whose associated edge-connection matrices have exponentially bounded rank growth. Our main result is an explicit construction of a large class of graph parameters with this property that we call mixed partition functions. Mixed partition functions can be seen as a generalization of partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227] and they are related to invariant theory of orthosymplectic supergroup. We moreover show that evaluations of the characteristic polynomial of a simple graph are examples of mixed partition functions, answering a question of de la Harpe and Jones.

On the circular chromatic number of a subgraph of the Kneser graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n,k,r$ be positive integers with $n \geq rk$ and $r \geq 2$. Consider a circle $C$ with~$n$ points~$1,\ldots,n$ in clockwise order. The $r$-stable \emph{interlacing graph} $\text{IG}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ is the graph with vertices corresponding to $k$-subsets $S$ of $\{1,...,n\}$ such that any two distinct points in~$S$ have distance at least~$r$ around the circle, and edges between~$k$-subsets $P$ and $Q$ if they \emph{interlace}: after removing the points in~$P$ from $C$, the points in~$Q$ are in different connected components. In this paper we prove that the circular chromatic number of $\text{IG}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ is equal to $ n/k $ (hence the chromatic number is $\lceil n/k \rceil$) and that its circular clique number is also $ n/k $. Furthermore, we show that its independence number is $\binom{n-(r-1)k-1}{k-1}$, thereby strengthening a result by Talbot.

Partition functions and a generalized coloring-flow duality for embedded graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 88(2) (2018), 271-283 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite group and $χ: G \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ a class function. Let $H = (V,E)$ be a directed graph with for each vertex a cyclic order of the edges incident to it. The cyclic orders give a collection $F$ of faces of $H$. Define the partition function $P_χ(H) := \sum_{κ: E \rightarrow G}\prod_{v \in V}χ(κ(δ(v)))$, where $κ(δ(v))$ denotes the product of the $κ$-values of the edges incident with $v$ (in order), where the inverse is taken for any edge leaving $v$. Write $χ= \sum_λm_λχ_λ$, where the sum runs over irreducible representations $λ$ of $G$ with character $χ_λ$ and with $m_λ \in \mathbb{C}$ for every $λ$. If $H$ is connected, it is proved that $P_χ(H) = |G|^{|E|}\sum_λχ_λ(1)^{|F|-|E|}m_λ^{|V|}$, where $1$ is the identity element of $G$. Among the corollaries, a formula for the number of nowhere-identity $G$-flows on $H$ is derived, generalizing a result of Tutte. We show that these flows correspond bijectively to certain proper $G$-colorings of a covering graph of the dual graph of $H$. This correspondence generalizes coloring-flow duality for planar graphs.

Enumerative Aspects of Nullstellensatz Certificates
Using polynomial equations to model combinatorial problems has been a popular tool both in computational combinatorics as well as an approach to proving new theorems. In this paper, we look at several combinatorics problems modeled by systems of polynomial equations satisfying special properties. If the equations are infeasible, Hilbert's Nullstellensatz gives a certificate of this fact. These certificates have been studied and exhibit combinatorial meaning. In this paper, we generalize some known results and show that the Nullstellensatz certificate can be viewed as enumerating combinatorial structures. As such, Gröbner basis algorithms for solving these decision problems may implicitly be solving the enumeration problem as well.

Graph parameters from symplectic group invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce, and characterize, a class of graph parameters obtained from tensor invariants of the symplectic group. These parameters are similar to partition functions of vertex models, as introduced by de la Harpe and Jones, [P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207-227]. Yet they give a completely different class of graph invariants. We moreover show that certain evaluations of the cycle partition polynomial, as defined by Martin [P. Martin, Enumérations eulériennes dans les multigraphes et invariants de Tutte-Grothendieck, Diss. Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble-INPG; Université Joseph-Fourier-Grenoble I, 1977], give examples of graph parameters that can be obtained this way.

The Strong Arnold Property for 4-connected flat graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if $G=(V,E)$ is a 4-connected flat graph, then any real symmetric $V\times V$ matrix $M$ with exactly one negative eigenvalue and satisfying, for any two distinct vertices $i$ and $j$, $M_{ij}<0$ if $i$ and $j$ are adjacent, and $M_{ij}=0$ if $i$ and $j$ are nonadjacent, has the Strong Arnold Property: there is no nonzero real symmetric $V\times V$ matrix $X$ with $MX=0$ and $X_{ij}=0$ whenever $i$ and $j$ are equal or adjacent. (A graph $G$ is {\em flat} if it can be embedded injectively in $3$-dimensional Euclidean space such that the image of any circuit is the boundary of some disk disjoint from the image of the remainder of the graph.) This applies to the Colin de Verdière graph parameter, and extends similar results for 2-connected outerplanar graphs and 3-connected planar graphs.
On the existence of real R-matrices for virtual link invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize the virtual link invariants that can be described as partition function of a real-valued R-matrix, by being weakly reflection positive. Weak reflection positivity is defined in terms of joining virtual link diagrams, which is a specialization of joining virtual link diagram tangles. Basic techniques are the first fundamental theorem of invariant theory, the Hanlon-Wales theorem on the decomposition of Brauer algebras, and the Procesi-Schwarz theorem on inequalities for closed orbits.

On partition functions for 3-graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\em cyclic graph} is a graph with at each vertex a cyclic order of the edges incident with it specified. We characterize which real-valued functions on the collection of cubic cyclic graphs are partition functions of a real vertex model (P. de la Harpe, V.F.R. Jones, Graph invariants related to statistical mechanical models: examples and problems, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 57 (1993) 207--227). They are characterized by `weak reflection positivity', which amounts to the positive semidefiniteness of matrices based on the `$k$-join' of cubic cyclic graphs (for all $k\in\oZ_+$). Basic tools are the representation theory of the symmetric group and geometric invariant theory, in particular the Hanlon-Wales theorem on the decomposition of Brauer algebras and the Procesi-Schwarz theorem on inequalities defining orbit spaces.
