Permutation Polytopes of Cyclic Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the combinatorics and geometry of permutation polytopes associated to cyclic permutation groups, i.e., the convex hulls of cyclic groups of permutation matrices. We give formulas for their dimension and vertex degree. In the situation that the generator of the group consists of at most two orbits, we can give a complete combinatorial description of the associated permutation polytope. In the case of three orbits the facet structure is already quite complex. For a large class of examples we show that there exist exponentially many facets.
Polyhedral adjunction theory
Published in Algebra Number Theory 7 (2013) 2417-2446 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give a combinatorial view on the adjunction theory of toric varieties. Inspired by classical adjunction theory of polarized algebraic varieties we define two convex-geometric notions: the Q-codegree and the nef value of a rational polytope P. We define the adjoint polytope P^(s) as the set of those points in P, whose lattice distance to every facet of P is at least s. We prove a structure theorem for lattice polytopes P with high Q-codegree. If P^(s) is empty for some s < 2/(dim(P)+2), then the lattice polytope P has lattice width one. This has consequences in Ehrhart theory and on polarized toric varieties with dual defect. Moreover, we illustrate how classification results in adjunction theory can be translated into new classification results for lattice polytopes.
Few smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points
Published in Israel J. Math., April 2015, Volume 207, Issue 1, pp 301-329 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that, for fixed n there exist only finitely many embeddings of Q-factorial toric varieties X into P^n that are induced by a complete linear system. The proof is based on a combinatorial result that for fixed nonnegative integers d and n, there are only finitely many smooth d-polytopes with n lattice points. We also enumerate all smooth 3-polytopes with at most 12 lattice points. In fact, it is sufficient to bound the singularities and the number of lattice points on edges to prove finiteness.

Linear Systems on Tropical Curves
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift 270 (2012), no. 3-4, 1111-1140 • View PublicationBIB
A tropical curve Γis a metric graph with possibly unbounded edges, and tropical rational functions are continuous piecewise linear functions with integer slopes. We define the complete linear system |D| of a divisor D on a tropical curve Γanalogously to the classical counterpart. We investigate the structure of |D| as a cell complex and show that linear systems are quotients of tropical modules, finitely generated by vertices of the cell complex. Using a finite set of generators, |D| defines a map from Γto a tropical projective space, and the image can be extended to a tropical curve of degree equal to °(D). The tropical convex hull of the image realizes the linear system |D| as a polyhedral complex. We show that curves for which the canonical divisor is not very ample are hyperelliptic. We also show that the Picard group of a \Q-tropical curve is a direct limit of critical groups of finite graphs converging to the curve.

Cayley decompositions of lattice polytopes and upper bounds for h^*-polynomials
Published in J. Reine Angew. Math. 637 (2009), 207-216 • View PublicationBIB
We give an effective upper bound on the h^*-polynomial of a lattice polytope in terms of its degree and leading coefficient, confirming a conjecture of Batyrev. We deduce this bound as a consequence of a strong Cayley decomposition theorem which says, roughly speaking, that any lattice polytope with a large multiple that has no interior lattice points has a nontrivial decomposition as a Cayley sum of polytopes of smaller dimension. In an appendix, we interpret this result in terms of adjunction theory for toric varieties.
Lattice points in Minkowski sums
Published in Electron J. Combin. 15(1) 2008, Note 11, 5 pp • View PublicationBIB
Fakhruddin has proved that for two lattice polygons P and Q any lattice point in their Minkowski sum can be written as a sum of a lattice point in P and one in Q, provided P is smooth and the normal fan of P is a subdivision of the normal fan of Q. We give a shorter combinatorial proof of this fact that does not need the smoothness assumption on P.

Grid graphs, Gorenstein polytopes, and domino stackings
Published in Graphs Combin. 25 (2009), 409-426 • View PublicationBIB
We examine domino tilings of rectangular boards, which are in natural bijection with perfect matchings of grid graphs. This leads to the study of their associated perfect matching polytopes, and we present some of their properties, in particular, when these polytopes are Gorenstein. We also introduce the notion of domino stackings and present some results and several open questions. Our techniques use results from graph theory, polyhedral geometry, and enumerative combinatorics.

Dedekind-Carlitz Polynomials as Lattice-Point Enumerators in Rational Polyhedra
Published in Math. Ann. 341, no. 4 (2008), 945-961 • View PublicationBIB
We study higher-dimensional analogs of the Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials c(u,v;a,b) := sum_{k=1..b-1} u^[ka/b] v^(k-1), where u and v are indeterminates and a and b are positive integers. Carlitz proved that these polynomials satisfy the reciprocity law (v-1) c(u,v;a,b) + (u-1) c(v,u;b,a) = u^(a-1) v^(b-1) - 1, from which one easily deduces many classical reciprocity theorems for the Dedekind sum and its generalizations. We illustrate that Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials appear naturally in generating functions of rational cones and use this fact to give geometric proofs of the Carlitz reciprocity law and various extensions of it. Our approach gives rise to new reciprocity theorems and computational complexity results for Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials, a characterization of Dedekind-Carlitz polynomials in terms of generating functions of lattice points in triangles, and a multivariate generalization of the Mordell-Pommersheim theorem on the appearance of Dedekind sums in Ehrhart polynomials of 3-dimensional lattice polytopes.

Quasi-period collapse and GL_n(Z)-scissors congruence in rational polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Quasi-period collapse occurs when the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope has a quasi-period less than the denominator of that polytope. This phenomenon is poorly understood, and all known cases in which it occurs have been proven with ad hoc methods. In this note, we present a conjectural explanation for quasi-period collapse in rational polytopes. We show that this explanation applies to some previous cases appearing in the literature. We also exhibit examples of Ehrhart polynomials of rational polytopes that are not the Ehrhart polynomials of any integral polytope. Our approach depends on the invariance of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial under the action of affine unimodular transformations. Motivated by the similarity of this idea to the scissors congruence problem, we explore the development of a Dehn-like invariant for rational polytopes in the lattice setting.
On permutation polytopes
Published in Adv. Math. 222 (2009), 431-452 • View PublicationBIB
A permutation polytope is the convex hull of a group of permutation matrices. In this paper we investigate the combinatorics of permutation polytopes and their faces. As applications we completely classify permutation polytopes in dimensions 2,3,4, and the corresponding permutation groups up to a suitable notion of equivalence. We also provide a list of combinatorial types of possibly occuring faces of permutation polytopes up to dimension four.

Groebner Bases for Transportation Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The toric ideals of $3\times 3$ transportation polytopes $T$ are quadratically generated. The only exception is the Birkhoff polytope $B_3$. If $T$ is not a multiple of $B_3$, these ideals even have squarefree quadratic initial ideals. This class contains all smooth $3 \times 3$ transportation polytopes.

Lattices generated by skeletons of reflexive polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lattices generated by lattice points in skeletons of reflexive polytopes are essential in determining the fundamental group and integral cohomology of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces. Here we prove that the lattice generated by all lattice points in a reflexive polytope is already generated by lattice points in codimension two faces. This answers a question of J. Morgan.

Theorems of Brion, Lawrence, and Varchenko on rational generating functions for cones
Published in Math. Intelligencer 31 (2009), no. 1, 9--17. • View PublicationBIB
We discuss and give elementary proofs of results of Brion and of Lawrence-Varchenko on the lattice-point enumerator generating functions for polytopes and cones. This largely expository note contains a new proof of Brion's Formula using irrational decompositions, and a generalization of the Lawrence-Varchenko formula.

The reflexive dimension of a lattice polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
The reflexive dimension refldim(P) of a lattice polytope P is the minimal d so that P is the face of some d-dimensional reflexive polytope. We show that refldim(P) is finite for every P, and give bounds for refldim(kP) in terms of refldim(P) and k.

Lattice polygons and the number 2i+7
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we classify all triples (a,b,i) such that there is a convex lattice polygon P with area a, and b respectively i lattice points on the boundary respectively in the interior. The crucial lemma for the classification is the necessity of b \le 2 i + 7. We sketch three proofs of this fact: the original one by Scott, an elementary one, and one using algebraic geometry. As a refinement, we introduce an onion skin parameter l: how many nested polygons does P contain? and give sharper bounds.

Polar decomposition and Brion's theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we point out the relation between Brion's formula for the lattice point generating function of a convex polytope in terms of the vertex cones [Brion1988] on the one hand, and the polar decomposition à la Lawrence/Varchenko [Lawrence1991, Varchenko1987] on the other. We then go on to prove a version of polar decomposition for non-simple polytopes.

Integral affine structures on spheres and torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces II
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0205321 where we have built a combinatorial model for the torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. This part addresses the connection between the model torus fibration and the complex and Kähler geometry of the hypersurfaces.

Integral affine structures on spheres and torus fibrations of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces I
We describe in purely combinatorial terms dual pairs of integral affine structures on spheres which come from the conjectural metric collapse of mirror families of Calabi-Yau toric hypersurfaces. The same structures arise on the base of a special Lagrangian torus fibration in the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We study the topological torus fibration in the large complex structure limit and show that it coincides with our combinatorial model.
