Linear maximum rank distance codes of exceptional type
Published • View PublicationBIB
Scattered polynomials of a given index over finite fields are intriguing rare objects with many connections within mathematics. Of particular interest are the exceptional ones, as defined in 2018 by the first author and Zhou, for which partial classification results are known. In this paper we propose a unified algebraic description of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-linear maximum rank distance codes, introducing the notion of exceptional linear maximum rank distance codes of a given index. Such a connection naturally extends the notion of exceptionality for a scattered polynomial in the rank metric framework and provides a generalization of Moore sets in the monomial MRD context. We move towards the classification of exceptional linear MRD codes, by showing that the ones of index zero are generalized Gabidulin codes and proving that in the positive index case the code contains an exceptional scattered polynomial of the same index.

Small Strong Blocking Sets by Concatenation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Strong blocking sets and their counterparts, minimal codes, attracted lots of attention in the last years. Combining the concatenating construction of codes with a geometric insight into the minimality condition, we explicitly provide infinite families of small strong blocking sets, whose size is linear in the dimension of the ambient projective spaces. As a byproduct, small saturating sets are obtained.
On the infiniteness of a family of APN functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
APN functions play a fundamental role in cryptography against attacks on block ciphers. Several families of quadratic APN functions have been proposed in the recent years, whose construction relies on the existence of specific families of polynomials. A key question connected with such constructions is to determine whether such APN functions exist for infinitely many dimensions or not. In this paper we consider a family of functions recently introduced by Li et al. in 2021 showing that for any dimension $m\geq 3$ there exists an APN function belonging to such a family. Our main result is proved by a combination of different techniques arising from both algebraic varieties over finite fields connected with linearized permutation rational functions and {partial vector space partitions}, together with investigations on the kernels of linearized polynomials.

On a conjecture on APN permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The single trivariate representation proposed in [C. Beierle, C. Carlet, G. Leander, L. Perrin, A Further Study of Quadratic APN Permutations in Dimension Nine, arXiv:2104.08008] of the two sporadic quadratic APN permutations in dimension 9 found by Beierle and Leander \cite{Beierle} is further investigated. In particular, using tools from algebraic geometry over finite fields, we prove that such a family does not contain any other APN permutation for larger dimensions.

Investigating the exceptionality of scattered polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Scattered polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ have been introduced by Sheekey in 2016, and a central open problem regards the classification of those that are exceptional. So far, only two families of exceptional scattered polynomials are known. Very recently, Longobardi and Zanella weakened the property of being scattered by introducing the notion of L-$q^t$-partially scattered and R-$q^t$-partially scattered polynomials, for $t$ a divisor of $n$. Indeed, a polynomial is scattered if and only if it is both L-$q^t$-partially scattered and R-$q^t$-partially scattered. In this paper, by using techniques from algebraic geometry over finite fields and function fields theory, we show that the property which is is the hardest to be preserved is the L-$q^t$-partially scattered one. On the one hand, we are able to extend the classification results of exceptional scattered polynomials to exceptional L-$q^t$-partially scattered polynomials. On the other hand, the R-$q^t$-partially scattered property seems more stable. We present a large family of R-$q^t$-partially scattered polynomials, containing examples of exceptional R-$q^t$-partially scattered polynomials, which turn out to be connected with linear sets of so-called pseudoregulus type. In order to detect new examples of polynomials which are R-$q^t$-partially scattered, we introduce two different notions of equivalence preserving this property and concerning natural actions of the groups ${\rm ΓL}(2,q^n)$ and ${\rm ΓL}(2n/t,q^t)$. In particular, our family contains many examples of inequivalent polynomials, and geometric arguments are used to determine the equivalence classes under the action of ${\rm ΓL}(2n/t,q^t)$.

Minimal codewords arising from the incidence of points and hyperplanes in projective spaces
Published in Adv. Math. Commun. 17 (1), 56-77 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Over the past few years, the codes $\mathcal{C}_{n-1}(n,q)$ arising from the incidence of points and hyperplanes in the projective space $\text{PG}(n,q)$ attracted a lot of attention. In particular, small weight codewords of $\mathcal{C}_{n-1}(n,q)$ are a topic of investigation. The main result of this work states that, if $q$ is large enough and not prime, a codeword having weight smaller than roughly $\frac{1}{2^{n-2}}q^{n-1}\sqrt{q}$ can be written as a linear combination of a few hyperplanes. Consequently, we use this result to provide a graph-theoretical sufficient condition for these codewords of small weight to be minimal.
$r$-fat linearized polynomials over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove that the property of being scattered for a $\mathbb{F}_q$-linearized polynomial of small $q$-degree over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ is unstable, in the sense that, whenever the corresponding linear set has at least one point of weight larger than one, the polynomial is far from being scattered. To this aim, we define and investigate $r$-fat polynomials, a natural generalization of scattered polynomials. An $r$-fat $\mathbb{F}_q$-linearized polynomial defines a linear set of rank $n$ in the projective line of order $q^n$ with $r$ points of weight larger than one. When $r$ equals $1$, the corresponding linear sets are called clubs, and they are related with a number of remarkable mathematical objects like KM-arcs, group divisible designs and rank metric codes. Using techniques on algebraic curves and global function fields, we obtain numerical bounds for $r$ and the non-existence of exceptional $r$-fat polynomials with $r>0$. In the case $n\leq 4$, we completely determine the spectrum of values of $r$ for which an $r$-fat polynomial exists. In the case $n=5$, we provide a new family of $1$-fat polynomials. Furthermore, we determine the values of $r$ for which the so-called LP-polynomials are $r$-fat.
On cutting blocking sets and their codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let PG$(r, q)$ be the $r$-dimensional projective space over the finite field ${\rm GF}(q)$. A set $\cal X$ of points of PG$(r, q)$ is a cutting blocking set if for each hyperplane $Π$ of PG$(r, q)$ the set $Π\cap \cal X$ spans $Π$. Cutting blocking sets give rise to saturating sets and minimal linear codes and those having size as small as possible are of particular interest. We observe that from a cutting blocking set obtained by Fancsali and Sziklai, by using a set of pairwise disjoint lines, there arises a minimal linear code whose length grows linearly with respect to its dimension. We also provide two distinct constructions: a cutting blocking set of PG$(3, q^3)$ of size $3(q+1)(q^2+1)$ as a union of three pairwise disjoint $q$-order subgeometries and a cutting blocking set of PG$(5, q)$ of size $7(q+1)$ from seven lines of a Desarguesian line spread of PG$(5, q)$. In both cases the cutting blocking sets obtained are smaller than the known ones. As a byproduct we further improve on the upper bound of the smallest size of certain saturating sets and on the minimum length of a minimal $q$-ary linear code having dimension $4$ and $6$.

On construction and (non)existence of $c$-(almost) perfect nonlinear functions

Functions with low differential uniformity have relevant applications in cryptography. Recently, functions with low $c$-differential uniformity attracted lots of attention. In particular, so-called APcN and PcN functions (generalization of APN and PN functions) have been investigated. Here, we provide a characterization of such functions via quadratic polynomials as well as non-existence results.

Algebraic constructions of complete $m$-arcs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $m$ be a positive integer, $q$ be a prime power, and $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ be the projective plane over the finite field $\mathbb F_q$. Finding complete $m$-arcs in $\mathrm{PG}(2,q)$ of size less than $q$ is a classical problem in finite geometry. In this paper we give a complete answer to this problem when $q$ is relatively large compared with $m$, explicitly constructing the smallest $m$-arcs in the literature so far for any $m\geq 8$. For any fixed $m$, our arcs $\mathcal A_{q,m}$ satisfy $|\mathcal A_{q,m}|-q\rightarrow -\infty$ as $q$ grows. To produce such $m$-arcs, we develop a Galois theoretical machinery that allows the transfer of geometric information of points external to the arc, to arithmetic one, which in turn allows to prove the $m$-completeness of the arc.
Evasive subspaces

Let $V$ denote an $r$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, the finite field of $q^n$ elements. Then $V$ is also an $rn$-dimension vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. An $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$ is $(h,k)_q$-evasive if it meets the $h$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-subspaces of $V$ in $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of dimension at most $k$. The $(1,1)_q$-evasive subspaces are known as scattered and they have been intensively studied in finite geometry, their maximum size has been proved to be $\lfloor rn/2 \rfloor$ when $rn$ is even or $n=3$. We investigate the maximum size of $(h,k)_q$-evasive subspaces, study two duality relations among them and provide various constructions. In particular, we present the first examples, for infinitely many values of $q$, of maximum scattered subspaces when $r=3$ and $n=5$. We obtain these examples in characteristics $2$, $3$ and $5$.

On a conjecture about maximum scattered subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}\times \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Maximum scattered subspaces are not only objects of intrinsic interest in finite geometry but also powerful tools for the construction of MRD-codes, projective two-weight codes, and strongly regular graphs. In 2018 Csajbók, Marino, Polverino, and Zanella introduced a new family of maximum scattered subspaces in $\mathbb{F}_{q^6} \times \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$ arising from polynomials of type $f_b(x)=bx^q+x^{q^4}$ for certain choices of $b \in \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$. Throughout characterizations for $f_{b_2}(x)$ and $f_{b_1}(x)$ giving rise to equivalent maximum scattered subspaces, the authors conjectured that the portion of new and inequivalent maximum scattered subspaces obtained in this way is quite large. In this paper first we find necessary and sufficient conditions for $b$ to obtain a maximum scattered subspace. Such conditions were found independently with different techniques also by Polverino and Zullo 2019. Then we prove the conjecture on the number of new and inequivalent maximum scattered subspaces of this family.

A family of permutation trinomials in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$
Let $p>3$ and consider a prime power $q=p^h$. We completely characterize permutation polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ of the type $f_{a,b}(X) = X(1 + aX^{q(q-1)} + bX^{2(q-1)}) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^2}[X]$. In particular, using connections with algebraic curves over finite fields, we show that the already known sufficient conditions are also necessary.

New examples of maximal curves with low genus

We investigate the Jacobian decomposition of some algebraic curves over finite fields with genus $4$, $5$ and $10$. As a corollary, explicit equations for curves that are either maximal or minimal over the finite field with $p^2$ elements are obtained for infinitely many $p$'s. Lists of small $p$'s for which maximality holds are provided. In some cases we describe the automorphism group of the curve.

A new family of maximum scattered linear sets in $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize the example of linear set presented by the last two authors in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019) to a more general family, proving that such linear sets are maximum scattered when $q$ is odd and, apart from a special case, they are are new. This solves an open problem posed in "Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$" (2019). As a consequence of Sheekey's results in "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016), this family yields to new MRD-codes with parameters $(6,6,q;5)$.
On planes through points off the twisted cubic in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ and multiple covering codes

Let $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ be the projective space of dimension three over the finite field with $q$ elements. Consider a twisted cubic in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. The structure of the point-plane incidence matrix in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$ with respect to the orbits of points and planes under the action of the stabilizer group of the twisted cubic is described. This information is used to view generalized doubly-extended Reed-Solomon codes of codimension four as asymptotically optimal multiple covering codes.

Asymptotics of Moore exponent sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n$ be a positive integer and $I$ a $k$-subset of integers in $[0,n-1]$. Given a $k$-tuple $A=(α_0, \cdots, α_{k-1})\in \mathbb{F}^k_{q^n}$, let $M_{A,I}$ denote the matrix $(α_i^{q^j})$ with $0\leq i\leq k-1$ and $j\in I$. When $I=\{0,1,\cdots, k-1\}$, $M_{A,I}$ is called a Moore matrix which was introduced by E. H. Moore in 1896. It is well known that the determinant of a Moore matrix equals $0$ if and only if $α_0,\cdots, α_{k-1}$ are $\mathbb{F}_q$-linearly dependent. We call $I$ that satisfies this property a Moore exponent set. In fact, Moore exponent sets are equivalent to maximum rank-distance (MRD) code with maximum left and right idealisers over finite fields. It is already known that $I=\{0,\cdots, k-1\}$ is not the unique Moore exponent set, for instance, (generalized) Delsarte-Gabidulin codes and the MRD codes recently discovered by Csajbók, Marino, Polverino and the second author both give rise to new Moore exponent sets. By using algebraic geometry approach, we obtain an asymptotic classification result: for $q>5$, if $I$ is not an arithmetic progression, then there exist an integer $N$ depending on $I$ such that $I$ is not a Moore exponent set provided that $n>N$.

Towards the full classification of exceptional scattered polynomials
Let $f(X) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^r}[X]$ be a $q$-polynomial. If the $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U=\{(x^{q^t},f(x)) \mid x \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}\}$ defines a maximum scattered linear set, then we call $f(X)$ a scattered polynomial of index $t$. The asymptotic behaviour of scattered polynomials of index $t$ is an interesting open problem. In this sense, exceptional scattered polynomials of index $t$ are those for which $U$ is a maximum scattered linear set in ${\rm PG}(1,q^{mr})$ for infinitely many $m$. The complete classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ (for $q>5$) and of index 1 were obtained by Bartoli and Zhou. In this paper we complete the classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ for $q \leq 4$. Also, some partial classifications are obtained for arbitrary $t$. As a consequence, the complete classification of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $2$ is given.
