Let $\mathfrak g$ be a simple Lie algebra with a Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak b$. Let $Δ^+$ be the corresponding (po)set of positive roots and $θ$ the highest root. A pair $\{η,η'\}\subset Δ^+$ is said to be glorious, if $η,η'$ are incomparable and $η+η'=θ$. Using the theory of abelian ideals of $\mathfrak b$, we (1) establish a relationship of $η,η'$ to certain abelian ideals associated with long simple roots, (2) provide a natural bijection between the glorious pairs and the pairs of adjacent long simple roots (i.e., some edges of the Dynkin diagram), and (3) point out a simple transform connecting two glorious pairs corresponding to the incident edges in the Dynkin digram. In types ${\bf DE}$, we prove that if $\{η,η'\}$ corresponds to the edge through the branching node of the Dynkin diagram, then the meet $η\wedgeη'$ is the unique maximal non-commutative root. There is also an analogue of this property for all other types except type ${\bf A}$. As an application, we describe the minimal non-abelian ideals of $\mathfrak b$.

Let $\mathfrak g$ be a simple Lie algebra with a Borel subalgebra $\mathfrak b$ and $\mathfrak{Ab}$ the set of abelian ideals of $\mathfrak b$. Let $Δ^+$ be the corresponding set of positive roots. We continue our study of combinatorial properties of the partition of $\mathfrak{Ab}$ parameterised by the long positive roots. In particular, the union of an arbitrary set of maximal abelian ideals is described, if $\mathfrak g\ne\mathfrak{sl}_n$. We also characterise the greatest lower bound of two positive roots, when it exists, and point out interesting subposets of $Δ^+$ that are modular lattices.

Let $\mathfrak g$ be a simple Lie algebra, $\mathfrak b$ a fixed Borel subalgebra, and $W$ the Weyl group of $\mathfrak g$. In this note, we study a relationship between the maximal abelian ideals of $\mathfrak b$ and the minimal inversion complete sets of $W$. The latter have been recently defined by Malvenuto et al. (J. Algebra, 424 (2015), 330-356.)

The set of weights of a finite-dimensional representation of a reductive Lie algebra has a natural poset structure ("weight poset"). Studying certain combinatorial problems related to antichains in weight posets, we realised that the best setting is provided by the representations associated with $\mathbb Z$-gradings of simple Lie algebras (arXiv: math.CO 1411.7683). If $\mathfrak g$ is a simple Lie algebra, then a $\mathbb Z$-grading of $\mathfrak g$ induces a $\mathbb Z$-grading of the corresponding root system $Δ$. In this article, we elaborate on a general theory of lower ideals (or antichains) in the corresponding weight posets $Δ(1)$. In particular, we provide a bijection between the lower ideals in $Δ(1)$ and certain elements of the Weyl group of $\mathfrak g$. An inspiring observation is that, to a great extent, the theory of lower ideals in $Δ(1)$ is similar to the theory of upper (= ad-nilpotent) ideals in the whole poset of positive roots $Δ^+$.

For a reductive Lie algebra $\mathfrak h$ and a simple finite-dimensional $\mathfrak h$-module $V$, the set of weights of $V$, $P(V)$, has a natural poset structure. We consider antichains in the weight poset $P(V)$ and a certain operator $\mathfrak X$ acting on antichains. Eventually, we impose stronger constraints on $(\mathfrak h,V)$ and stick to the case in which $\mathfrak h$ and $V$ are associated with a $Z$-grading of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. Then $V$ is a weight multiplicity free $\mathfrak h$-module and $P(V)$ can be regarded as a subposet of $Δ^+$, where $Δ$ is the root system of $\mathfrak g$. Our goal is to demonstrate that antichains in the weight posets associated with $Z$-gradings of $\mathfrak g$ exhibit many good properties similar to those of $Δ^+$ that are observed earlier in arXiv: math.CO 0711.3353 (=Ref. [14] in the text).

Let $g$ be a simple Lie algebra and $Ab$ the poset of non-trivial abelian ideals of a fixed Borel subalgebra of $g$. In 2003 (IMRN, no.35, 1889--1913), we constructed a partition of $Ab$ into the subposets $Ab_μ$, parameterised by the long positive roots of $g$, and established some properties of these subposets. In this note, we show that this partition is compatible with intersections, relate it to the Kostant-Peterson parameterisation of abelian ideals and to the centralisers of abelian ideals. We also prove that the poset of positive roots of $g$ is a join-semilattice.

Let $g$ be a simple Lie algebra and $Ab(g)$ the set of Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra of $g$. In this note, an interesting connection between $Ab(g)$ and the subsets of the Dynkin diagram of $g$ is discussed. We notice that the number of abelian ideals with $k$ generators equals the number of subsets of the Dynkin diagram with $k$ connected components. For $g$ of type $A_n$ or $C_n$, we provide a combinatorial explanation of this coincidence by constructing a suitable bijection. We also construct another general bijection between $Ab(g)$ and the subsets of the Dynkin diagram, which is based on the theory developed by Peterson and Kostant.

We study weight posets of weight multiplicity free (=wmf) representations $R$ of reductive Lie algebras. Specifically, we are interested in relations between $\dim R$ and the number of edges in the Hasse diagram of the corresponding weight poset, $# E(R)$. We compute the number of edges and upper covering polynomials for the weight posets of all wmf-representations. We also point out non-trivial isomorphisms between weight posets of different irreducible wmf-representations.
Our main results concern wmf-representations associated with periodic gradings or Z-gradings of simple Lie algebras. For Z-gradings, we prove that $0< 2dim R-# E(R) < h$, where $h$ is the Coxeter number of $\mathfrak g$. For periodic gradings, we prove that $0\le 2dim R-# E(R)$.

For any finite poset P, there is a natural operator $X$ acting on the antichains of P. We discuss conjectural properties of this operator for some graded posets associated with irreducible root systems. In particular, if $Δ^+$ is the set of positive roots and $Π$ is the set of simple roots in $Δ^+$, then we consider the cases $P=Δ^+$ and $Δ^+\setminus Π$. For the root system of type $A_n$, we consider an $X$-invariant integer-valued function on the set of antichains of $Δ^+$ and establish some properties of it.

Let $Δ$ be a root system with a subset of positive roots, $Δ^+$. We consider edges of the Hasse diagrams of some posets associated with $Δ^+$. For each edge one naturally defines its type, and we study the partition of the set of edges into types. For $Δ^+$, the type is a simple root, and for the posets of ad-nilpotent and Abelian ideals the type is an affine simple roots. We give several descriptions of the set of edges of given type and uniform expressions for the number of edges. By a result of Peterson, the number of Abelian ideals is $2^n$, where $n$ is the rank of $Δ$. We prove that the number of edges of the corresponding Hasse diagram is $(n+1)2^{n-2}$. For $Δ^+$ and the Abelian ideals, we compute the number of edges of each type and prove that the number of edges of type $α$ depends only on the length of $α$.

We introduce two polynomials (in $q$) associated with a finite poset $P$ that encode some information on the covering relation in $P$. If $P$ is a distributive lattice, and hence $P$ is isomorphic to the poset of dual order ideals in a poset $L$, then these polynomials coincide and the coefficient of $q$ equals the number of $k$-element antichains in $L$. In general, these two covering polynomials are different, and we introduce a deviation polynomial of $P$, which measures the difference between these two. We then compute all these polynomials in the case, where $P$ is one of the posets associated with an irreducible root system. These are 1) the posets of positive roots, 2) the poset of ad-nilpotent ideals, and 3) the poset of Abelian ideals.

Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. We give several descriptions of the normalizer of an ad-nilpotent ideal: using the weight of an ideal, or the affine Weyl group, or a relationship with dominant regions of the Shi arrangement. We also give a description of those ideals whose normalizer is equal to $\be$. For sl(n) and sp(2n), explicit enumerative results are obtained, which demonstrate a connection with some famous integer sequences.

We consider ad-nilpotent ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra. The goal of this paper is two-fold. First, we study the ad-nilpotent ideals lying inside the Heisenberg ideal. The Heisenberg ideal is the nilpotent radical of the centralizer of the highest root vector. Second, we study the ideals having the property that the corresponding domain of the Shi arrangement consists of a single alcove. Such ideals (and the corresponding elements of the affine Weyl group) are called minimax.

Let $\be$ be a Borel subalgebra of a complex simple Lie algebra $\g$. An ideal of $\be$ is called ad-nilpotent, if it is contained in $[\be,\be]$. The generators of an ad-nilpotent ideal give rise to an antichain in the poset of positive roots, and the whole theory can be expressed in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of antichains. The aim of this paper is to present a refinement of the enumerative theory of ad-nilpotent ideals for the case in which $\g$ has roots of different length. An antichain is called short, if it consists of short roots. We obtain, for short antichains, analogues of all results known for the usual antichains.

We study Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra consisting of long roots. It is shown that methods of Cellini and Papi can be extended to this situation. A uniform expression for the number of long Abelian ideals is given. We also show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the long Abelian ideals and B-stable commutative subalgebras in the little adjoint representation of the Langlands dual Lie algebra.

It was shown by Cellini and Papi that an ad-nilpotent ideal determines certain element of the affine Weyl group, and that there is a bijection between the ad-nilpotent ideals and the integral points of a simplex with rational vertices. We give a description of the generators of ad-nilpotent ideals in terms of these elements, and show that an ideal has $k$ generators if and only it lies on the face of this simplex of codimension $k$. We also consider two combinatorial statistics on the set of ad-nilpotent ideals: the number of simple roots in the ideal and the number of generators. Considering the first statistic reveals some relations with the theory of clusters (Fomin-Zelevinsky). The distribution of the second statistic suggests that there should exist a natural involution (duality) on the set of ad-nilpotent ideals. Such an involution is constructed for the series A,B,C.

Let $\b$ be a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra $\g$ and let $\Ab$ denote the set of all Abelian ideals of $\b$. We consider $\Ab$ as poset with respect to inclusion, the zero ideal being the unique minimal element of $\Ab$. It was shown in my paper with G.Roehrle (Adv. Math. v.159 (2001)) that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the maximal Abelian ideals and the long simple roots of $\g$. But the very existence of it was demonstrated in a case-by-case fashion. Here a conceptual explanation for that empirical observation is given. The main results are: 1) there is a natural mapping $τ$ from the set of all nontrivial Abelian ideals to the set of long positive roots; 2) If $I$ is a maximal Abelian ideal, then $τ(I)$ is a long simple root. Restricting $τ$ to the set of maximal Abelian ideals yields the above-mentioned correspondence; 3) Each fibre of $τ$ is a poset in its own right, and we prove that this fibre has a unique maximal and a unique minimal element. 4) An explicit description of the minimal and the maximal ideal corresponding to a long root is given.
