Strong subgraph 2-arc-connectivity and arc-strong connectivity of Cartesian product of digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$, $S$ a subset of $V$ of size $k$ and $2\le k\leq n$. A strong subgraph $H$ of $D$ is called an $S$-strong subgraph if $S\subseteq V(H)$. A pair of $S$-strong subgraphs $D_1$ and $D_2$ are said to be arc-disjoint if $A(D_1)\cap A(D_2)=\emptyset$. Let $λ_S(D)$ be the maximum number of arc-disjoint $S$-strong subgraphs in $D$. The strong subgraph $k$-arc-connectivity is defined as $$λ_k(D)=\min\{λ_S(D)\mid S\subseteq V(D), |S|=k\}.$$ The parameter $λ_k(D)$ can be seen as a generalization of classical edge-connectivity of undirected graphs. In this paper, we first obtain a formula for the arc-connectivity of Cartesian product $λ(G\Box H)$ of two digraphs $G$ and $H$ generalizing a formula for edge-connectivity of Cartesian product of two undirected graphs obtained by Xu and Yang (2006). Then we study the strong subgraph 2-arc-connectivity of Cartesian product $λ_2(G\Box H)$ and prove that $ \min\left \{ λ\left ( G \right ) \left | H \right | , λ\left ( H \right ) \left |G \right |,δ^{+ } \left ( G \right )+ δ^{+ } \left ( H \right ),δ^{- } \left ( G \right )+ δ^{- } \left ( H \right ) \right \}\geλ_2(G\Box H)\ge λ_2(G)+λ_2(H)-1.$ The upper bound for $λ_2(G\Box H)$ is sharp and is a simple corollary of the formula for $λ(G\Box H)$. The lower bound for $λ_2(G\Box H)$ is either sharp or almost sharp i.e. differs by 1 from the sharp bound. We also obtain exact values for $λ_2(G\Box H)$, where $G$ and $H$ are digraphs from some digraph families.
Preference Swaps for the Stable Matching Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
An instance $I$ of the Stable Matching Problem (SMP) is given by a bipartite graph with a preference list of neighbors for every vertex. A swap in $I$ is the exchange of two consecutive vertices in a preference list. A swap can be viewed as a smallest perturbation of $I$. Boehmer et al. (2021) designed a polynomial-time algorithm to find the minimum number of swaps required to turn a given maximal matching into a stable matching. We generalize this result to the many-to-many version of SMP. We do so first by introducing a new representation of SMP as an extended bipartite graph and subsequently by reducing the problem to submodular minimization. It is a natural problem to establish the computational complexity of deciding whether at most $k$ swaps are enough to turn $I$ into an instance where one of the maximum matchings is stable. Using a hardness result of Gupta et al. (2020), we prove that this problem is NP-hard and, moreover, this problem parameterised by $k$ is W[1]-hard. We also obtain a lower bound on the running time for solving the problem using the Exponential Time Hypothesis.
Extended Path Partition Conjecture for Semicomplete and Acyclic Compositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $D$ be a digraph and let $λ(D)$ denote the number of vertices in a longest path of $D$. For a pair of vertex-disjoint induced subdigraphs $A$ and $B$ of $D$, we say that $(A,B)$ is a partition of $D$ if $V(A)\cup V(B)=V(D).$ The Path Partition Conjecture (PPC) states that for every digraph, $D$, and every integer $q$ with $1\leq q\leqλ(D)-1$, there exists a partition $(A,B)$ of $D$ such that $λ(A)\leq q$ and $λ(B)\leqλ(D)-q.$ Let $T$ be a digraph with vertex set $\{u_1,\dots, u_t\}$ and for every $i\in [t]$, let $H_i$ be a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\, j_i\in [n_i]\}$. The {\em composition} $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ of $T$ and $H_1,\ldots, H_t$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\, i\in [t], j_i\in [n_i]\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{i,j_i}u_{p,q_p}\colon\, u_iu_p\in A(T), j_i\in [n_i], q_p\in [n_p]\}.$$ We say that $Q$ is acyclic {(semicomplete, respectively)} if $T$ is acyclic {(semicomplete, respectively)}. In this paper, we introduce a conjecture stronger than PPC using a property first studied by Bang-Jensen, Nielsen and Yeo (2006) and show that the stronger conjecture holds for wide families of acyclic and semicomplete compositions.

Packing Strong Subgraph in Digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study two types of strong subgraph packing problems in digraphs, including internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem and arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem. These problems can be viewed as generalizations of the famous Steiner tree packing problem and are closely related to the strong arc decomposition problem. We first prove the NP-completeness for the internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem restricted to symmetric digraphs and Eulerian digraphs. Then we get inapproximability results for the arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem and the internally disjoint strong subgraph packing problem. Finally we study the arc-disjoint strong subgraph packing problem restricted to digraph compositions and obtain some algorithmic results by utilizing the structural properties.

Perfect Forests in Graphs and Their Extensions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. For $i\in \{0,1\}$ and a connected graph $G$, a spanning forest $F$ of $G$ is called an $i$-perfect forest if every tree in $F$ is an induced subgraph of $G$ and exactly $i$ vertices of $F$ have even degree (including zero). A $i$-perfect forest of $G$ is proper if it has no vertices of degree zero. Scott (2001) showed that every connected graph with even number of vertices contains a (proper) 0-perfect forest. We prove that one can find a 0-perfect forest with minimum number of edges in polynomial time, but it is NP-hard to obtain a 0-perfect forest with maximum number of edges. Moreover, we show that to decide whether $G$ has a 0-perfect forest with at least $|V(G)|/2+k$ edges, where $k$ is the parameter, is W[1]-hard. We also prove that for a prescribed edge $e$ of $G,$ it is NP-hard to obtain a 0-perfect forest containing $e,$ but one can decide if there existsa 0-perfect forest not containing $e$ in polynomial time. It is easy to see that every graph with odd number of vertices has a 1-perfect forest. It is not the case for proper 1-perfect forests. We give a characterization of when a connected graph has a proper 1-perfect forest.

Lower Bounds for Maximum Weighted Cut
Published • View PublicationBIB
While there have been many results on lower bounds for Max Cut in unweighted graphs, there are only few results for lower bounds for Max Cut in weighted graphs. In this paper, we launch an extensive study of lower bounds for Max Cut in weighted graphs. We introduce a new approach for obtaining lower bounds for Weighted Max Cut. Using it, Probabilistic Method, Vizing's chromatic index theorem, and other tools, we obtain several lower bounds for arbitrary weighted graphs, weighted graphs of bounded girth and triangle-free weighted graphs. We pose conjectures and open questions.
The smallest number of vertices in a 2-arc-strong digraph which has no good pair
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bang-Jensen, Bessy, Havet and Yeo showed that every digraph of independence number at most 2 and arc-connectivity at least 2 has an out-branching $B^+$ and an in-branching $B^-$ which are arc-disjoint (such two branchings are called a {\it good pair}), which settled a conjecture of Thomassen for digraphs of independence number 2. They also proved that every digraph on at most 6 vertices and arc-connectivity at least 2 has a good pair and gave an example of a 2-arc-strong digraph $D$ on 10 vertices with independence number 4 that has no good pair. They asked for the smallest number $n$ of vertices in a 2-arc-strong digraph which has no good pair. In this paper, we prove that every digraph on at most 9 vertices and arc-connectivity at least 2 has a good pair, which solves this problem.

Note on semi-proper orientations of outerplanar graphs
A semi-proper orientation of a given graph $G$, denoted by $(D,w)$, is an orientation $D$ with a weight function $w: A(D)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_+$, such that the in-weight of any adjacent vertices are distinct, where the in-weight of $v$ in $D$, denoted by $w^-_D(v)$, is the sum of the weights of arcs towards $v$. The semi-proper orientation number of a graph $G$, denoted by $\overrightarrowχ_s(G)$, is the minimum of maximum in-weight of $v$ in $D$ over all semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ of $G$. This parameter was first introduced by Dehghan (2019). When the weights of all edges eqaul to one, this parameter is equal to the proper orientation number of $G$. The optimal semi-proper orientation is a semi-proper orientation $(D,w)$ such that $\max_{v\in V(G)}w_D^-(v)=\overrightarrowχ_s(G)$. Araújo et al. (2016) showed that $\overrightarrowχ(G)\le 7$ for every cactus $G$ and the bound is tight. We prove that for every cactus $G$, $\overrightarrowχ_s(G) \le 3$ and the bound is tight. Araújo et al. (2015) asked whether there is a constant $c$ such that $\overrightarrowχ(G)\le c$ for all outerplanar graphs $G.$ While this problem remains open, we consider it in the weighted case. We prove that for every outerplanar graph $G,$ $\overrightarrowχ_s(G)\le 4$ and the bound is tight.

Exact capacitated domination: on the computational complexity of uniqueness
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider a local service-requirement assignment problem named exact capacitated domination from an algorithmic point of view. This problem aims to find a solution (a Nash equilibrium) to a game-theoretic model of public good provision. In the problem we are given a capacitated graph, a graph with a parameter defined on each vertex that is interpreted as the capacity of that vertex. The objective is to find a DP-Nash subgraph: a spanning bipartite subgraph with partite sets D and P, called the D-set and P-set respectively, such that no vertex in P is isolated and that each vertex in D is adjacent to a number of vertices equal to its capacity. We show that whether a capacitated graph has a unique DP-Nash subgraph can be decided in polynomial time. However, we also show that the nearby problem of deciding whether a capacitated graph has a unique D-set is co-NP-complete.
Proximity and Remoteness in Directed and Undirected Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $D$ be a strongly connected digraph. The average distance $\barσ(v)$ of a vertex $v$ of $D$ is the arithmetic mean of the distances from $v$ to all other vertices of $D$. The remoteness $ρ(D)$ and proximity $π(D)$ of $D$ are the maximum and the minimum of the average distances of the vertices of $D$, respectively. We obtain sharp upper and lower bounds on $π(D)$ and $ρ(D)$ as a function of the order $n$ of $D$ and describe the extreme digraphs for all the bounds. We also obtain such bounds for strong tournaments. We show that for a strong tournament $T$, we have $π(T)=ρ(T)$ if and only if $T$ is regular. Due to this result, one may conjecture that every strong digraph $D$ with $π(D)=ρ(D)$ is regular. We present an infinite family of non-regular strong digraphs $D$ such that $π(D)=ρ(D).$ We describe such a family for undirected graphs as well.

Arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at the same vertex in compositions of digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A digraph $D=(V, A)$ has a good pair at a vertex $r$ if $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at $r$. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ When $T$ is arbitrary, we obtain the following result: every strong digraph composition $Q$ in which $n_i\ge 2$ for every $1\leq i\leq t$, has a good pair at every vertex of $Q.$ The condition of $n_i\ge 2$ in this result cannot be relaxed. When $T$ is semicomplete, we characterize semicomplete compositions with a good pair, which generalizes the corresponding characterization by Bang-Jensen and Huang (J. Graph Theory, 1995) for quasi-transitive digraphs. As a result, we can decide in polynomial time whether a given semicomplete composition has a good pair rooted at a given vertex.

Arc-disjoint Strong Spanning Subdigraphs of Semicomplete Compositions
A strong arc decomposition of a digraph $D=(V,A)$ is a decomposition of its arc set $A$ into two disjoint subsets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both of the spanning subdigraphs $D_1=(V,A_1)$ and $D_2=(V,A_2)$ are strong. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\cup_{i=1}^t V(H_i)=\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set \[ \left(\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i) \right) \cup \left( \cup_{u_iu_p\in A(T)} \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p} \mid 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\} \right). \] We obtain a characterization of digraph compositions $Q=T[H_1,\dots H_t]$ which have a strong arc decomposition when $T$ is a semicomplete digraph and each $H_i$ is an arbitrary digraph. Our characterization generalizes a characterization by Bang-Jensen and Yeo (2003) of semicomplete digraphs with a strong arc decomposition and solves an open problem by Sun, Gutin and Ai (2018) on strong arc decompositions of digraph compositions $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ in which $T$ is semicomplete and each $H_i$ is arbitrary. Our proofs are constructive and imply the existence of a polynomial algorithm for constructing a \good{} decomposition of a digraph $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$, with $T$ semicomplete, whenever such a decomposition exists.

Arc-disjoint strong spanning subdigraphs in compositions and products of digraphs
A digraph $D=(V,A)$ has a good decomposition if $A$ has two disjoint sets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both $(V,A_1)$ and $(V,A_2)$ are strong. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ For digraph compositions $Q=T[H_1,\dots H_t]$, we obtain sufficient conditions for $Q$ to have a good decomposition and a characterization of $Q$ with a good decomposition when $T$ is a strong semicomplete digraph and each $H_i$ is an arbitrary digraph with at least two vertices. For digraph products, we prove the following: (a) if $k\geq 2$ is an integer and $G$ is a strong digraph which has a collection of arc-disjoint cycles covering all vertices, then the Cartesian product digraph $G^{\square k}$ (the $k$th powers with respect to Cartesian product) has a good decomposition; (b) for any strong digraphs $G, H$, the strong product $G\boxtimes H$ has a good decomposition.

Strong Subgraph Connectivity of Digraphs: A Survey
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this survey we overview known results on the strong subgraph $k$-connectivity and strong subgraph $k$-arc-connectivity of digraphs. After an introductory section, the paper is divided into four sections: basic results, algorithms and complexity, sharp bounds for strong subgraph $k$-(arc-)connectivity, minimally strong subgraph $(k, \ell)$-(arc-) connected digraphs. This survey contains several conjectures and open problems for further study.

Strong subgraph $k$-arc-connectivity
Two previous papers, arXiv:1803.00284 and arXiv:1803.00281, introduced and studied strong subgraph $k$-connectivity of digraphs obtaining characterizations, lower and upper bounds and computational complexity results for the new digraph parameter. The parameter is an analog of well-studied generalized $k$-connectivity of undirected graphs. In this paper, we introduce the concept of strong subgraph $k$-arc-connectivity of digraphs, which is an analog of generalized $k$-edge-connectivity of undirected graphs. We also obtain characterizations, lower and upper bounds and computational complexity results for this digraph parameter. Several of our results differ from those obtained for strong subgraph $k$-connectivity.

Strong subgraph $k$-connectivity bounds
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$, $S$ a subset of $V$ of size $k$ and $2\le k\leq n$. Strong subgraphs $D_1, \dots , D_p$ containing $S$ are said to be internally disjoint if $V(D_i)\cap V(D_j)=S$ and $A(D_i)\cap A(D_j)=\emptyset$ for all $1\le i<j\le p$. Let $κ_S(D)$ be the maximum number of internally disjoint strong digraphs containing $S$ in $D$. The strong subgraph $k$-connectivity is defined as $$κ_k(D)=\min\{κ_S(D)\mid S\subseteq V, |S|=k\}.$$ A digraph $D=(V, A)$ is called minimally strong subgraph $(k,\ell)$-connected if $κ_k(D)\geq \ell$ but for any arc $e\in A$, $κ_k(D-e)\leq \ell-1$. In this paper, we first give a sharp upper bound for the parameter $κ_k(D)$ and then study the minimally strong subgraph $(k,\ell)$-connected digraphs.
Strong Subgraph $k$-connectivity
Generalized connectivity introduced by Hager (1985) has been studied extensively in undirected graphs and become an established area in undirected graph theory. For connectivity problems, directed graphs can be considered as generalizations of undirected graphs. In this paper, we introduce a natural extension of generalized $k$-connectivity of undirected graphs to directed graphs (we call it strong subgraph $k$-connectivity) by replacing connectivity with strong connectivity. We prove NP-completeness results and the existence of polynomial algorithms. We show that strong subgraph $k$--connectivity is, in a sense, harder to compute than generalized $k$-connectivity. However, strong subgraph $k$-connectivity can be computed in polynomial time for semicomplete digraphs and symmetric digraphs. We also provide sharp bounds on strong subgraph $k$-connectivity and pose some open questions.

Seymour's second neighbourhood conjecture for quasi-transitive oriented graphs
Seymour's second neighbourhood conjecture asserts that every oriented graph has a vertex whose second out-neighbourhood is at least as large as its out-neighbourhood. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture holds for quasi-transitive oriented graphs, which is a superclass of tournaments and transitive acyclic digraphs. A digraph $D$ is called quasi-transitive is for every pair $xy,yz$ of arcs between distinct vertices $x,y,z$, $xz$ or $zx$ ("or" is inclusive here) is in $D$.

Odd Properly Colored Cycles in Edge-Colored Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that an undirected graph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. A less obvious, but similar result holds for directed graphs: a strongly connected digraph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. Can this result be further generalized to more general graphs such as edge-colored graphs? In this paper, we study this problem and show how to decide if there exists an odd properly colored cycle in a given edge-colored graph. As a by-product, we show how to detect if there is a perfect matching in a graph with even (or odd) number of edges in a given edge set.
