Reidl, Sánchez Villaamil, and Stravopoulos (2019) characterized graph classes of bounded expansion as follows: A class $\mathcal{C}$ closed under subgraphs has bounded expansion if and only if there exists a function $f:\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ such that for every graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$, every nonempty subset $A$ of vertices in $G$ and every nonnegative integer $r$, the number of distinct intersections between $A$ and a ball of radius $r$ in $G$ is at most $f(r) |A|$. When $\mathcal{C}$ has bounded expansion, the function $f(r)$ coming from existing proofs is typically exponential. In the special case of planar graphs, it was conjectured by Sokołowski (2021) that $f(r)$ could be taken to be a polynomial.
In this paper, we prove this conjecture: For every nonempty subset $A$ of vertices in a planar graph $G$ and every nonnegative integer $r$, the number of distinct intersections between $A$ and a ball of radius $r$ in $G$ is $O(r^4 |A|)$. We also show that a polynomial bound holds more generally for every proper minor-closed class of graphs.

We prove that every $n$-vertex $K_t$-minor-free graph $G$ of maximum degree $Δ$ has a set $F$ of $O(t^2(\log t)^{1/4}\sqrt{Δn})$ edges such that every component of $G - F$ has at most $n/2$ vertices. This is best possible up to the dependency on $t$ and extends earlier results of Diks, Djidjev, Sykora, and Vrťo (1993) for planar graphs, and of Sykora and Vrťo (1993) for bounded-genus graphs. Our result is a consequence of the following more general result: The line graph of $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of the strong product $H \boxtimes K_{\lfloor p \rfloor}$ for some graph $H$ with treewidth at most $t-2$ and $p = \sqrt{(t-3)Δ|E(G)|} + Δ$.

Alon, Seymour and Thomas [1990] proved that every $n$-vertex graph excluding $K_t$ as a minor has treewidth less than $t^{3/2}\sqrt{n}$. Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022] recently refined this result by showing that every such graph is a subgraph of some graph with treewidth $t-2$, where each vertex is blown up by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{tn})$. Solving an open problem of Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022], we prove that the treewidth bound can be reduced to $4$ while keeping blowups of order $O_t(\sqrt{n})$. As an extension of the Lipton--Tarjan theorem, in the case of planar graphs, we show that the treewidth can be further reduced to $2$, which is best possible. We generalise this result for $K_{3,t}$-minor-free graphs, with blowups of order $O(t\sqrt{n})$. This setting includes graphs embeddable on any fixed surface.

Product structure theorems are a collection of recent results that have been used to resolve a number of longstanding open problems on planar graphs and related graph classes. One particularly useful version states that every planar graph $G$ is contained in the strong product of a $3$-tree $H$, a path $P$, and a $3$-cycle $K_3$; written as $G\subseteq H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_3$. A number of researchers have asked if this theorem can be strengthened so that the maximum degree in $H$ can be bounded by a function of the maximum degree in $G$. We show that no such strengthening is possible. Specifically, we describe an infinite family $\mathcal{G}$ of planar graphs of maximum degree $5$ such that, if an $n$-vertex member $G$ of $\mathcal{G}$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of $H\boxtimes P\boxtimes K_c$ where $P$ is a path and $H$ is a graph of maximum degree $Δ$ and treewidth $t$, then $tΔc \ge 2^{Ω(\sqrt{\log\log n})}$.
Treedepth vs circumference

The circumference of a graph $G$ is the length of a longest cycle in $G$, or $+\infty$ if $G$ has no cycle. Birmelé (2003) showed that the treewidth of a graph $G$ is at most its circumference minus $1$. We strengthen this result for $2$-connected graphs as follows: If $G$ is $2$-connected, then its treedepth is at most its circumference. The bound is best possible and improves on an earlier quadratic upper bound due to Marshall and Wood (2015).
Smaller extended formulations for spanning tree polytopes in minor-closed classes and beyond

Let $G$ be a connected $n$-vertex graph in a proper minor-closed class $\mathcal G$. We prove that the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of $G$ is $O(n^{3/2})$. This improves on the $O(n^2)$ bounds following from the work of Wong (1980) and Martin (1991). It also extends a result of Fiorini, Huynh, Joret, and Pashkovich (2017), who obtained a $O(n^{3/2})$ bound for graphs embedded in a fixed surface. Our proof works more generally for all graph classes admitting strongly sublinear balanced separators: We prove that for every constant $β$ with $0<β<1$, if $\mathcal G$ is a graph class closed under induced subgraphs such that all $n$-vertex graphs in $\mathcal G$ have balanced separators of size $O(n^β)$, then the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of every connected $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is $O(n^{1+β})$. We in fact give two proofs of this result, one is a direct construction of the extended formulation, the other is via communication protocols. Using the latter approach we also give a short proof of the $O(n)$ bound for planar graphs due to Williams (2002).
Integer programs with bounded subdeterminants and two nonzeros per row

We give a strongly polynomial-time algorithm for integer linear programs defined by integer coefficient matrices whose subdeterminants are bounded by a constant and that contain at most two nonzero entries in each row. The core of our approach is the first polynomial-time algorithm for the weighted stable set problem on graphs that do not contain more than $k$ vertex-disjoint odd cycles, where $k$ is any constant. Previously, polynomial-time algorithms were only known for $k=0$ (bipartite graphs) and for $k=1$.
We observe that integer linear programs defined by coefficient matrices with bounded subdeterminants and two nonzeros per column can be also solved in strongly polynomial-time, using a reduction to $b$-matching.

Weak coloring numbers generalize the notion of degeneracy of a graph. They were introduced by Kierstead \& Yang in the context of games on graphs. Recently, several connections have been uncovered between weak coloring numbers and various parameters studied in graph minor theory and its generalizations. In this note, we show that for every fixed $k\geq1$, the maximum $r$-th weak coloring number of a graph with simple treewidth $k$ is $Θ(r^{k-1}\log r)$. As a corollary, we improve the lower bound on the maximum $r$-th weak coloring number of planar graphs from $Ω(r^2)$ to $Ω(r^2\log r)$, and we obtain a tight bound of $Θ(r\log r)$ for outerplanar graphs.

We show that for every integer $n\geq 1$ there exists a graph $G_n$ with $(1+o(1))n$ vertices and $n^{1 + o(1)}$ edges such that every $n$-vertex planar graph is isomorphic to a subgraph of $G_n$. The best previous bound on the number of edges was $O(n^{3/2})$, proved by Babai, Chung, Erdős, Graham, and Spencer in 1982. We then show that for every integer $n\geq 1$ there is a graph $U_n$ with $n^{1 + o(1)}$ vertices and edges that contains induced copies of every $n$-vertex planar graph. This significantly reduces the number of edges in a recent construction of the authors with Dujmović, Gavoille, and Micek.
Approximating pathwidth for graphs of small treewidth

We describe a polynomial-time algorithm which, given a graph $G$ with treewidth $t$, approximates the pathwidth of $G$ to within a ratio of $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$. This is the first algorithm to achieve an $f(t)$-approximation for some function $f$.
Our approach builds on the following key insight: every graph with large pathwidth has large treewidth or contains a subdivision of a large complete binary tree. Specifically, we show that every graph with pathwidth at least $th+2$ has treewidth at least $t$ or contains a subdivision of a complete binary tree of height $h+1$. The bound $th+2$ is best possible up to a multiplicative constant. This result was motivated by, and implies (with $c=2$), the following conjecture of Kawarabayashi and Rossman (SODA'18): there exists a universal constant $c$ such that every graph with pathwidth $Ω(k^c)$ has treewidth at least $k$ or contains a subdivision of a complete binary tree of height $k$.
Our main technical algorithm takes a graph $G$ and some (not necessarily optimal) tree decomposition of $G$ of width $t'$ in the input, and it computes in polynomial time an integer $h$, a certificate that $G$ has pathwidth at least $h$, and a path decomposition of $G$ of width at most $(t'+1)h+1$. The certificate is closely related to (and implies) the existence of a subdivision of a complete binary tree of height $h$. The approximation algorithm for pathwidth is then obtained by combining this algorithm with the approximation algorithm of Feige, Hajiaghayi, and Lee (STOC'05) for treewidth.
Tight Bounds on the Clique Chromatic Number

The clique chromatic number of a graph is the minimum number of colours needed to colour its vertices so that no inclusion-wise maximal clique which is not an isolated vertex is monochromatic. We show that every graph of maximum degree $Δ$ has clique chromatic number $O\left(\fracΔ{\log~Δ}\right)$. We obtain as a corollary that every $n$-vertex graph has clique chromatic number $O\left(\sqrt{\frac{n}{\log ~n}}\right)$. Both these results are tight.
Two lower bounds for $p$-centered colorings

Given a graph $G$ and an integer $p$, a coloring $f : V(G) \to \mathbb{N}$ is \emph{$p$-centered} if for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, either $f$ uses more than $p$ colors on $H$ or there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. The notion of $p$-centered colorings plays a central role in the theory of sparse graphs. In this note we show two lower bounds on the number of colors required in a $p$-centered coloring.
First, we consider monotone classes of graphs whose shallow minors have average degree bounded polynomially in the radius, or equivalently (by a result of Dvořák and Norin), admitting strongly sublinear separators. We construct such a class such that $p$-centered colorings require a number of colors super-polynomial in $p$. This is in contrast with a recent result of Pilipczuk and Siebertz, who established a polynomial upper bound in the special case of graphs excluding a fixed minor.
Second, we consider graphs of maximum degree $Δ$. Dębski, Felsner, Micek, and Schröder recently proved that these graphs have $p$-centered colorings with $O(Δ^{2-1/p} p)$ colors. We show that there are graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ that require $Ω(Δ^{2-1/p} p \ln^{-1/p}Δ)$ colors in any $p$-centered coloring, thus matching their upper bound up to a logarithmic factor.

Given a fixed graph $H$ that embeds in a surface $Σ$, what is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ that embeds in $Σ$? We show that the answer is $Θ(n^{f(H)})$, where $f(H)$ is a graph invariant called the `flap-number' of $H$, which is independent of $Σ$. This simultaneously answers two open problems posed by Eppstein (1993). When $H$ is a complete graph we give more precise answers.
Adjacency Labelling for Planar Graphs (and Beyond)

We show that there exists an adjacency labelling scheme for planar graphs where each vertex of an $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ is assigned a $(1+o(1))\log_2 n$-bit label and the labels of two vertices $u$ and $v$ are sufficient to determine if $uv$ is an edge of $G$. This is optimal up to the lower order term and is the first such asymptotically optimal result. An alternative, but equivalent, interpretation of this result is that, for every $n$, there exists a graph $U_n$ with $n^{1+o(1)}$ vertices such that every $n$-vertex planar graph is an induced subgraph of $U_n$. These results generalize to bounded genus graphs, apex-minor-free graphs, bounded-degree graphs from minor closed families, and $k$-planar graphs.
Excluding a ladder

A ladder is a $2 \times k$ grid graph. When does a graph class $\mathcal{C}$ exclude some ladder as a minor? We show that this is the case if and only if all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{C}$ admit a proper vertex coloring with a bounded number of colors such that for every $2$-connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. This type of vertex coloring is a relaxation of the notion of centered coloring, where for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there must be a color that appears exactly once in $H$. The minimum number of colors in a centered coloring of $G$ is the treedepth of $G$, and it is known that classes of graphs with bounded treedepth are exactly those that exclude a fixed path as a subgraph, or equivalently, as a minor. In this sense, the structure of graphs excluding a fixed ladder as a minor resembles the structure of graphs without long paths. Another similarity is as follows: It is an easy observation that every connected graph with two vertex-disjoint paths of length $k$ has a path of length $k+1$. We show that every $3$-connected graph which contains as a minor a union of sufficiently many vertex-disjoint copies of a $2 \times k$ grid has a $2 \times (k+1)$ grid minor.
Our structural results have applications to poset dimension. We show that posets whose cover graphs exclude a fixed ladder as a minor have bounded dimension. This is a new step towards the goal of understanding which graphs are unavoidable as minors in cover graphs of posets with large dimension.

It was recently proved that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path and a graph with bounded treewidth. This paper surveys generalisations of this result for graphs on surfaces, minor-closed classes, various non-minor-closed classes, and graph classes with polynomial growth. We then explore how graph product structure might be applicable to more broadly defined graph classes. In particular, we characterise when a graph class defined by a cartesian or strong product has bounded or polynomial expansion. We then explore graph product structure theorems for various geometrically defined graph classes, and present several open problems.

We prove that for every integer $t\ge 1$ there exists a constant $c_t$ such that for every $K_t$-minor-free graph $G$, and every set $S$ of balls in $G$, the minimum size of a set of vertices of $G$ intersecting all the balls of $S$ is at most $c_t$ times the maximum number of vertex-disjoint balls in $S$. This was conjectured by Chepoi, Estellon, and Vaxès in 2007 in the special case of planar graphs and of balls having the same radius.
Erdős-Pósa from ball packing

A classic theorem of Erdős and Pósa (1965) states that every graph has either $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles or a set of $O(k \log k)$ vertices meeting all its cycles. While the standard proof revolves around finding a large `frame' in the graph (a subdivision of a large cubic graph), an alternative way of proving this theorem is to use a ball packing argument of Kühn and Osthus (2003) and Diestel and Rempel (2005). In this paper, we argue that the latter approach is particularly well suited for studying edge variants of the Erdős-Pósa theorem.
As an illustration, we give a short proof of a theorem of Bruhn, Heinlein, and Joos (2019), that cycles of length at least $\ell$ have the so-called edge-Erdős-Pósa property. More precisely, we show that every graph $G$ either contains $k$ edge-disjoint cycles of length at least $\ell$ or an edge set $F$ of size $O(k\ell \cdot \log (k\ell))$ such that $G-F$ has no cycle of length at least $\ell$. For fixed $\ell$, this improves on the previously best known bound of $O(k^2 \log k +k\ell)$.
Large independent sets in triangle-free cubic graphs: beyond planarity

Every $n$-vertex planar triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ has an independent set of size at least $\frac{3}{8}n$. This was first conjectured by Albertson, Bollobás and Tucker, and was later proved by Heckman and Thomas. Fraughnaugh and Locke conjectured that the planarity requirement could be relaxed into just forbidding a few specific nonplanar subgraphs: They described a family $\mathcal{F}$ of six nonplanar graphs (each of order at most $22$) and conjectured that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ having no subgraph isomorphic to a member of $\mathcal{F}$ has an independent set of size at least $\frac{3}{8}n$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture.
As a corollary, we obtain that every $2$-connected $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with maximum degree at most $3$ has an independent set of size at least $\frac{3}{8}n$, with the exception of the six graphs in $\mathcal{F}$. This confirms a conjecture made independently by Bajnok and Brinkmann, and by Fraughnaugh and Locke.
