Consecutive Power Occurrences in Sturmian Words
We show that every Sturmian word has the property that the distance between consecutive ending positions of cubes occurring in the word is always bounded by $10$ and this bound is optimal, extending a result of Rampersad, who proved that the bound $9$ holds for the Fibonacci word. We then give a general result showing that for every $e \in [1,(5+\sqrt{5})/2)$ there is a natural number $N$, depending only on $e$, such that every Sturmian word has the property that the distance between consecutive ending positions of $e$-powers occurring in the word is uniformly bounded by $N$.

$D$-finite multivariate series with arithmetic restrictions on their coefficients
Published in Can. J. Math. 75, No. 6, 1745-1779 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
A multivariate, formal power series over a field $K$ is a Bézivin series if all of its coefficients can be expressed as a sum of at most $r$ elements from a finitely generated subgroup $G \le K^*$; it is a Pólya series if one can take $r=1$. We give explicit structural descriptions of $D$-finite Bézivin series and $D$-finite Pólya series over fields of characteristic $0$, thus extending classical results of Pólya and Bézivin to the multivariate setting.

Cogrowth Series for Free Products of Finite Groups
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 33.02 (2023): 237-260 • View PublicationBIB
Given a finitely generated group with generating set $S$, we study the cogrowth sequence, which is the number of words of length $n$ over the alphabet $S$ that are equal to one. This is related to the probability of return for walks the corresponding Cayley graph. Muller and Schupp proved the generating function of the sequence is algebraic when $G$ has a finite-index free subgroup (using a result of Dunwoody). In this work we make this result effective for free products of finite groups: we determine bounds for the degree and height of the minimal polynomial of the generating function, and determine the minimal polynomial explicitly for some families of free products. Using these results we are able to prove that a gap theorem holds: if $S$ is a finite symmetric generating set for a group $G$ and if $a_n$ denotes the number of words of length $n$ over the alphabet $S$ that are equal to $1$ then $\limsup_n a_n^{1/n}$ exists and is either $1$, $2$, or at least $2\sqrt{2}$.

Noncommutative rational Pólya series
Published in Sel. Math., New Ser. 27, No. 3, Paper No. 34, 34 p. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
A (noncommutative) Pólya series over a field $K$ is a formal power series whose nonzero coefficients are contained in a finitely generated subgroup of $K^\times$. We show that rational Pólya series are unambiguous rational series, proving a 40 year old conjecture of Reutenauer. The proof combines methods from noncommutative algebra, automata theory, and number theory (specifically, unit equations). As a corollary, a rational series is a Pólya series if and only if it is Hadamard sub-invertible. Phrased differently, we show that every weighted finite automaton taking values in a finitely generated subgroup of a field (and zero) is equivalent to an unambiguous weighted finite automaton.

On the Complexity of the Cogrowth Sequence
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finitely generated group with generating set $S$, we study the \emph{cogrowth} sequence, which is the number of words of length $n$ over the alphabet $S$ that are equal to one. This is related to the probability of return for walks in a Cayley graph with steps from $S$. We prove that the cogrowth sequence is not $P$-recursive when~$G$ is an amenable group of superpolynomial growth, answering a question of Garrabant and Pak.

When is an automatic set an additive basis?
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize those $k$-automatic sets $S$ of natural numbers that form an additive basis for the natural numbers, and we show that this characterization is effective. In addition, we give an algorithm to determine the smallest $j$ such that $S$ forms an additive basis of order $j$, if it exists.

Enumeration of $\C{H}$-strata in quantum matrices with respect to dimension
We present a combinatorial method to determine the dimension of $\C{H}$-strata in the algebra of $m\times n$ quantum matrices $\Oq$ as follows. To a given $\C{H}$-stratum we associate a certain permutation via the notion of pipe-dreams. We show that the dimension of the $\C{H}$-stratum is precisely the number of odd cycles in this permutation. Using this result, we are able to give closed formulas for the trivariate generating function that counts the $d$-dimensional $\C{H}$-strata in $\Oq$. Finally, we extract the coefficients of this generating function in order to settle conjectures proposed by the first and third named authors \cite{bldim,bll} regarding the asymptotic proportion of $d$-dimensional $\C{H}$-strata in $\Oq$.

Primitive ideals in quantum Schubert cells: dimension of the strata
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to study the representation theory of quantum Schubert cells. Let $\g$ be a simple complex Lie algebra. To each element $w$ of the Weyl group $W$ of $\g$, De Concini, Kac and Procesi have attached a subalgebra $U_q[w]$ of the quantised enveloping algebra $U_q(\g)$. Recently, Yakimov showed that these algebras can be interpreted as the quantum Schubert cells on quantum flag manifolds. In this paper, we study the primitive ideals of $U_q[w]$. More precisely, it follows from the Stratification Theorem of Goodearl and Letzter that the primitive spectrum of $U_q[w]$ admits a stratification indexed by those primes that are invariant under a natural torus action. Moreover each stratum is homeomorphic to the spectrum of maximal ideals of a torus. The main result of this paper gives an explicit formula for the dimension of the stratum associated to a given torus-invariant prime.

Monadic Second-Order Classes of Forests with a Monadic Second-Order 0-1 Law
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\cT$ be a monadic-second order class of finite trees, and let $\bT(x)$ be its (ordinary) generating function, with radius of convergence $ρ$. If $ρ\ge 1$ then $\cT$ has an explicit specification (without using recursion) in terms of the operations of union, sum, stack, and the multiset operators $(n)$ and $(\ge n)$. Using this, one has an explicit expression for $\bT(x)$ in terms of the initial functions $x$ and $x\cdot \big(1-x^n\big)^{-1}$, the operations of addition and multiplication, and the Pólya exponentiation operators $\sE_n, \sE_{\ge n}$. Let $\cF$ be a monadic-second order class of finite forests, and let $\bF(x)=\sum_n f(n) x^n$ be its (ordinary) generating function. Suppose $\cF$ is closed under extraction of component trees and sums of forests. Using the above-mentioned structure theory for the class $\cT$ of trees in $\cF$, Compton's theory of 0--1 laws, and a significantly strengthened version of 2003 results of Bell and Burris on generating functions, we show that $\cF$ has a monadic second-order 0--1 law iff the radius of convergence of $\bF(x)$ is 1 iff the radius of convergence of $\bT(x)$ is $\ge 1$.

Spectra and Systems of Equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a previous work we introduced an elementary method to analyze the periodicity of a generating function defined by a single equation y=G(x,y). This was based on deriving a single set-equation Y = Gammma(Y) defining the spectrum of the generating function. This paper focuses on extending the analysis of periodicity to generating functions defined by a system of equations y = G(x,y). The final section looks at periodicity results for the spectra of monadic second-order classes whose spectrum is determined by an equational specification - an observation of Compton shows that monadic-second order classes of trees have this property. This section concludes with a substantial simplification of the proofs in the 2003 foundational paper on spectra by Gurevich and Shelah, namely new proofs are given of: (1) every monadic second-order class of $m$-colored functional digraphs is eventually periodic, and (2) the monadic second-order theory of finite trees is decidable.

Characteristic Points of Recursive Systems
Published in Elec. J. Combin. 17 (2010), #R121 • View PublicationBIB
Characteristic points have been a primary tool in the study of a generating function defined by a single recursive equation. We investigate the proper way to adapt this tool when working with multi-equation recursive systems.
