A Probabilistic Proof of the Rogers Ramanujan Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
The asymptotic probability theory of conjugacy classes of the finite general linear and unitary groups leads to a probability measure on the set of all partitions of natural numbers. A simple method of understanding these measures in terms of Markov chains is given and compared with work on the uniform measure. Elementary probabilistic proofs of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities follow. As a corollary, the main case of Bailey's lemma is interpreted as finding eigenvectors of the transition matrix of the Markov chain. It is shown that the viewpoint of Markov chains extends to quivers.

New Examples of Potential Theory on Bratelli Diagrams
We consider potential theory on Bratteli diagrams arising from Macdonald polynomials. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is particularly interesting; the elements of the diagram are partitions, the branching multiplicities are integers, the combinatorial dimensions are Green's polynomials, and the Jordan form of a randomly chosen unipotent upper triangular matrix over a finite field gives rise to a harmonic function. The case of Schur functions yields natural deformations of the Young lattice and Plancharel measure. Many harmonic functions are constructed and algorithms for sampling from the underlying probability measures are given.

Affine shuffles, shuffles with cuts, the Whitehouse module, and patience sorting
Published • View PublicationBIB
Type A affine shuffles are compared with riffle shuffles followed by a cut. Although these probability measures on the symmetric group S_n are different, they both satisfy a convolution property. Strong evidence is given that when the underlying parameter $q$ satisfies $gcd(n,q-1)=1$, the induced measures on conjugacy classes of the symmetric group coincide. This gives rise to interesting combinatorics concerning the modular equidistribution by major index of permutations in a given conjugacy class and with a given number of cyclic descents. It is proved that the use of cuts does not speed up the convergence rate of riffle shuffles to randomness. Generating functions for the first pile size in patience sorting from decks with repeated values are derived. This relates to random matrices.

The eigenvalue spacing of a random unipotent matrix in its action on lines
Published • View PublicationBIB
The eigenvalue spacing of a uniformly chosen random finite unipotent matrix in its permutation action on lines is studied. We obtain bounds for the mean number of eigenvalues lying in a fixed arc of the unit circle and offer an approach toward other asymptotics. For the case of all unipotent matrices, the proof gives a probabilistic interpretation to identities of Macdonald from symmetric function theory. For the case of upper triangular matrices over a finite field, connections between symmetric function theory and a probabilistic growth algorithm of Borodin emerge..

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

A Generalization of an Alternating Sum Formula for Finite Coxeter Groups
For W a finite Coxeter group, a formula is found for the size of W equivalence classes of subsets of a base. The proof is a case-by-case analysis using results and tables of Carter and Orlik/Solomon. As a corollary we obtain an alternating sum identity which generalizes a well-known identity from the theory of Coxeter groups.

Descent algebras, hyperplane arrangements, and shuffling cards
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two notions of riffle shuffling on finite Coxeter groups are given: one using Solomon's descent algebra and another using random walk on chambers of hyperplane arrangements. These coincide for types $A$,$B$,$C$, $H_3$, and rank two groups. Both notions have the same, simple eigenvalues. The hyperplane definition is especially natural and satisfies a positivity property when $W$ is crystallographic and the relevant parameter is a good prime. The hyperplane viewpoint suggests interesting connections with Lie theory and leads to a notion of riffle shuffling for arbitrary real hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids. Connections with Cellini's descent algebra are given.

Orbifold Euler characteristics and the number of commuting n-tuples in symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.

Counting semisimple orbits of finite Lie algebras by genus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra is studied. A simple formula is conjectured for the number of split semisimple orbits of a given genus. This conjecture is proved for type A, and partial results are obtained for other types. For type A a probabilistic interpretation is given in terms of card shuffling.

The Rogers-Ramanujan Identities, the Finite General Linear Groups, and the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Rogers-Ramanujan identities have been studied from the viewpoints of combinatorics, number theory, affine Lie algebras, statistical mechanics, and quantum field theory. This note connects the Rogers-Ramanujan identities with the finite general linear groups and the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of symmetric function theory.

Probabilistic measures and algorithms arising from the Macdonald symmetric functions
The Macdonald symmetric functions are used to define measures on the set of all partitions of all integers. Probabilistic algorithms are given for growing partitions according to these measures. The case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials is related to the finite classical groups, and the corresponding algorithms simplify. The case of Schur functions leads to a $q$-analog of Plancharel measure, and a conditioned version of the corresponding algorithms yields generalizations of the hook walk of combinatorics.

Cycle indices for the finite classical groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper defines and develops cycle indices for the finite classical groups. These tools are then applied to study properties of a random matrix chosen uniformly from one of these groups. Properties studied by this technique will include semisimplicity, regularity, regular semisimplicity, the characteristic polynomial, number of Jordan blocks, and average order of a matrix.

The combinatorics of biased riffle shuffles
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies biased riffle shuffles, first defined by Diaconis, Fill, and Pitman. These shuffles generalize the well-studied Gilbert-Shannon-Reeds shuffle and convolve nicely. An upper bound is given for the time for these shuffles to converge to the uniform distribution; this matches lower bounds of Lalley. A careful version of a bijection of Gessel leads to a generating function for cycle structure after one of these shuffles and gives new results about descents in random permutations. Results are also obtained about the inversion and descent structure of a permutation after one of these shuffles.

Stein's Method and Non-Reversible Markov Chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be either the number of descents or inversions of a permutation. Stein's method is applied to show that W satisfies a central limit theorem with error rate n^(-1/2). The construction of an exchangeable pair (W,W') used in Stein's method is non-trivial and uses a non-reversible Markov chain.

The Weil Conjectures are applied to the Hessenberg Varieties to obtain interesting information about the combinatorics of descents in the symmetric group. Combining this with elementary linear algebra leads to elegant proofs of some identities from the theory of descents.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling measures on Coxeter groups
Published in Latest version is math.GR/9903012 • View PublicationBIB
Solomon's descent algebra is used to define a family of signed measures M(W,x) for a finite Coxeter group W and non-zero x. The measures corresponding to W of types A and B are known to arise from the theory of card shuffling and to be related to the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem and splittings of Hochschild homology. Formulas for these measures are obtained in special cases. The eigenvalues of the associated Markov chains are computed. By elementary algebraic group theory, choosing a random semisimple orbit on a Lie algebra corresponding to a finite group of Lie type G^F induces a measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group W of G^F. It is conjectured that this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from M(W,q) (and further that M(W,q) is non-negative on all elements of W). This conjecture is proved for all types for the identity conjugacy class of W, and is confirmed for all conjugacy classes for W of types A, B, and C.
