Turán density of tight cycles minus one edge in the $\ell_2$-norm
The $3$-uniform tight $\ell$-cycle minus one edge $C_{\ell}^{3-}$ is the $3$-graph on $\ell$ vertices consisting of $\ell-1$ consecutive triples in the cyclic order. We show that for every integer $\ell \ge 5$ satisfying $\ell\not\equiv 0\pmod3$, every $C_{\ell}^{3-}$-free $3$-graph whose $\ell_2$-norm, that is, the sum of codegree squares, is close to the maximum must be structurally close to the iterative blowup of a single triple. This confirms a conjecture of Balogh--Clemen--Lidický~[Surveys in combinatorics 2022, 21-63] in a stronger form.
Max-Bisections of graphs without even cycles
For an integer $k\ge 2$, let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and without cycles of length $2k$. The pivotal Alon-Krivelevich-Sudakov Theorem on Max-Cuts states that $G$ has a bipartite subgraph with at least $m/2+Ω(m^{(2k+1)/(2k+2)})$ edges. In this paper, we present a bisection variant of it by showing that if $G$ has minimum degree at least $k$, then $G$ has a balanced bipartite subgraph with at least $m/2+Ω(m^{(2k+1)/(2k+2)})$ edges. It not only answers a problem of Fan, Hou and Yu in full generality but also enhances a recent result given by Hou, Wu and Zhong.
Our approach hinges on a key bound for bisections of graphs with sparse neighborhoods concerning the degree sequence. The result is inspired by the celebrated approximation algorithm of Goemans and Williamson and appears to be worthy of future exploration.
Density Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem for cliques of size four
The celebrated Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem~\cite{CH63} and the Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem~\cite{HS70} determined the exact minimum degree thresholds for a graph on $n$ vertices to contain $k$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$, for $r=3$ and general $r \ge 4$, respectively. The edge density version of the Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem was established by Allen--Böttcher--Hladký--Piguet~\cite{ABHP15} for large $n$. Remarkably, they determined the four classes of extremal constructions corresponding to different intervals of $k$. They further proposed the natural problem of establishing a density version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem: For $r \ge 4$, what is the edge density threshold that guarantees a graph on $n$ vertices contains $k$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$ for $k \le n/r$. They also remarked, ``We are not even sure what the complete family of extremal graphs should be.''
We take the first step toward this problem by determining asymptotically the five classes of extremal constructions for $r=4$. Furthermore, we propose a candidate set comprising $r+1$ classes of extremal constructions for general $r \ge 5$.
Max-Bisections of graphs without perfect matching
A bisection of a graph is a bipartition of its vertex set such that the two resulting parts differ in size by at most 1, and its size is the number of edges that connect vertices in the two parts. The perfect matching condition and forbidden even cycles subgraphs are essential in finding large bisections of graphs. In this paper, we show that the perfect matching condition can be replaced by the minimum degree condition. Let $C_{\ell}$ be a cycle of length $\ell$ for $\ell\ge 3$, and let $G$ be a $\{C_4, C_6\}$-free graph with $m$ edges and minimum degree at least 2. We prove that $G$ has a bisection of size at least $m/2+Ω\left(\sum_{v\in V(G)}\sqrt{d(v)}\right)$. As a corollary, if $G$ is also $C_{2k}$-free for $k\ge3$, then $G$ has a bisection of size at least $m / 2+Ω\left(m^{(2 k+1) /(2 k+2)}\right)$, thereby confirming a conjecture proposed by Lin and Zeng [J. Comb. Theory A, 180 (2021), 105404].
Generalized Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós theorems for odd cycles
In this note, we establish Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós-type stability theorems for two generalized Turán problems involving odd cycles, both of which are extensions of the Erdős Pentagon Problem. Our results strengthen previous results by Lidický--Murphy~\cite{LM21} and Beke--Janzer~\cite{BJ24}, while also simplifying parts of their proofs.
Balanced clique subdivisions and cycles lengths in $K_{s, t}$-free graphs
Let $ t\ge s\ge2$ be integers. Confirming a conjecture of Mader, Liu and Montgomery [J. Lond. Math. Soc., 2017] showed that every $K_{s, t}$-free graph with average degree $d$ contains a subdivision of a clique with at least $Ω(d^{\frac{s}{2(s-1)}})$ vertices. We give an improvement by showing that such a graph contains a balanced subdivision of a clique with the same order, where a balanced subdivision is a subdivision in which each edge is subdivided the same number of times.
In 1975, Erdős asked whether the sum of the reciprocals of the cycle lengths in a graph with infinite average degree $d$ is necessarily infinite. Recently, Liu and Montgomery [J. Amer. Math. Soc., 2023] confirmed the asymptotically correct lower bound on the reciprocals of the cycle lengths, and provided a lower bound of at least $(\frac{1}{2} -o_d(1)) \log d$. In this paper, we improve this low bound to $\left(\frac{s}{2(s-1)} -o_d(1)\right) \log d$ for $K_{s, t}$-free graphs.
Both proofs of our results use the graph sublinear expansion property as well as some novel structural techniques.
On the boundedness of degenerate hypergraphs
We investigate the impact of a high-degree vertex in Turán problems for degenerate hypergraphs (including graphs). We say an $r$-graph $F$ is bounded if there exist constants $α, β>0$ such that for large $n$, every $n$-vertex $F$-free $r$-graph with a vertex of degree at least $α\binom{n-1}{r-1}$ has fewer than $(1-β) \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ edges. The boundedness property is crucial for recent works~\cite{HHLLYZ23a,DHLY24} that aim to extend the classical Hajnal--Szemerédi Theorem and the anti-Ramsey theorems of Erdős--Simonovits--Sós.
We show that many well-studied degenerate hypergraphs, such as all even cycles, most complete bipartite graphs, and the expansion of most complete bipartite graphs, are bounded. In addition, to prove the boundedness of the expansion of complete bipartite graphs, we introduce and solve a Zarankiewicz-type problem for $3$-graphs, strengthening a theorem by Kostochka--Mubayi--Verstraëte~\cite{KMV15}.
Tight bounds for rainbow partial $F$-tiling in edge-colored complete hypergraphs
For an $r$-graph $F$ and integers $n,t$ satisfying $t \le n/v(F)$, let $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ denote the minimum integer $N$ such that every edge-coloring of $K_{n}^{r}$ using $N$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $tF$, where $tF$ is the $r$-graphs consisting of $t$ vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. The case $t=1$ is the classical anti-Ramsey problem proposed by Erdős--Simonovits--Sós~\cite{ESS75}. When $F$ is a single edge, this becomes the rainbow matching problem introduced by Schiermeyer~\cite{Sch04} and Özkahya--Young~\cite{OY13}. We conduct a systematic study of $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ for the case where $t$ is much smaller than $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)/n^{r-1}$. Our first main result provides a reduction of $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ to $\mathrm{ar}(n,2F)$ when $F$ is bounded and smooth, two properties satisfied by most previously studied hypergraphs. Complementing the first result, the second main result, which utilizes gaps between Turán numbers, determines $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ for relatively smaller $t$. Together, these two results determine $\mathrm{ar}(n,tF)$ for a large class of hypergraphs. Additionally, the latter result has the advantage of being applicable to hypergraphs with unknown Turán densities, such as the famous tetrahedron $K_{4}^{3}$.
A criterion for Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós type theorems and applications
The classical Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós Theorem states that for $\ell\ge 2$, every $n$-vertex $K_{\ell+1}$-free graph with minimum degree greater than $\frac{3\ell-4}{3\ell-1}n$ must be $\ell$-partite. We establish a simple criterion for $r$-graphs, $r \geq 2$, to exhibit an Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós type property, also known as degree-stability. This leads to a classification of most previously studied hypergraph families with this property. An immediate application of this result, combined with a general theorem by Keevash--Lenz--Mubayi, solves the spectral Turán problems for a large class of hypergraphs.
For every $r$-graph $F$ with degree-stability, there is a simple algorithm to decide the $F$-freeness of an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with minimum degree greater than $(π(F) - \varepsilon_F)\binom{n}{r-1}$ in time $O(n^r)$, where $\varepsilon_F >0$ is a constant. In particular, for the complete graph $K_{\ell+1}$, we can take $\varepsilon_{K_{\ell+1}} = (3\ell^2-\ell)^{-1}$, and this bound is tight up to some multiplicative constant factor unless $\mathbf{W[1]} = \mathbf{FPT}$. Based on a result by Chen--Huang--Kanj--Xia, we further show that for every fixed $C > 0$, this problem cannot be solved in time $n^{o(\ell)}$ if we replace $\varepsilon_{K_{\ell+1}}$ with $(C\ell)^{-1}$ unless $\mathbf{ETH}$ fails. Furthermore, we apply the degree-stability of $K_{\ell+1}$ to decide the $K_{\ell+1}$-freeness of graphs whose size is close to the Turán bound in time $(\ell+1)n^2$, partially improving a recent result by Fomin--Golovach--Sagunov--Simonov. As an intermediate step, we show that for a specific class of $r$-graphs $F$, the (surjective) $F$-coloring problem can be solved in time $O(n^r)$, provided the input $r$-graph has $n$ vertices and a large minimum degree, refining several previous results.
Many vertex-disjoint even cycles of fixed length in a graph
For every integer $k \ge 3$, we determine the extremal structure of an $n$-vertex graph with at most $t$ vertex-disjoint copies of $C_{2k}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large and $t$ lies in the interval $\left[\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,C_{2k})}{\varepsilon n}, \varepsilon n\right]$, where $\varepsilon>0$ is a constant depending only on $k$. The question for $k = 2$ and $t = o\left(\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,C_{2k})}{n}\right)$ was explored in prior work~\cite{HHLLYZ23a}, revealing different extremal structures in these cases. Our result can be viewed as an extension of the theorems by Egawa~\cite{Ega96} and Verstraëte~\cite{Ver03}, where the focus was on the existence of many vertex-disjoint cycles of the same length without any length constraints.
Toward a density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem for degenerate hypergraphs
Given an $r$-graph $F$ with $r \ge 2$, let $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with at most $t$ pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. Extending several old results and complementing prior work [J. Hou, H. Li, X. Liu, L.-T. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem. arXiv:2302.09849, 2023.] on nondegenerate hypergraphs, we initiate a systematic study on $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ for degenerate hypergraphs $F$. For a broad class of degenerate hypergraphs $F$, we present near-optimal upper bounds for $\mathrm{ex}(n, (t+1) F)$ when $n$ is sufficiently large and $t$ lies in intervals $\left[0, \frac{\varepsilon \cdot \mathrm{ex}(n,F)}{n^{r-1}}\right]$, $\left[\frac{\mathrm{ex}(n,F)}{\varepsilon n^{r-1}}, \varepsilon n \right]$, and $\left[ (1-\varepsilon)\frac{n}{v(F)}, \frac{n}{v(F)} \right]$, where $\varepsilon > 0$ is a constant depending only on $F$. Our results reveal very different structures for extremal constructions across the three intervals, and we provide characterizations of extremal constructions within the first interval. Additionally, for graphs, we offer a characterization of extremal constructions within the second interval. Our proof for the first interval also applies to a special class of nondegenerate hypergraphs, including those with undetermined Turán densities, partially improving a result in [J. Hou, H. Li, X. Liu, L.-T. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal theorem. arXiv:2302.09849, 2023.]
Counting triangles in graphs without vertex disjoint odd cycles
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is denoted by $\mathrm{ex}(n, H, F)$. Let $(\ell+1) \cdot F$ denote $\ell+1$ vertex disjoint copies of $F$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}(n, C_3, (\ell+1)\cdot C_{2k+1})$ and its extremal graph, which generalizes some known results.
Hypergraphs with irrational Turán density and many extremal configurations
Unlike graphs, determining Turán densities of hypergraphs is known to be notoriously hard in general. The essential reason is that for many classical families of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{F}$, there are perhaps many near-extremal $\mathcal{M}_t$-free configurations with very different structure. Such a phenomenon is called not stable, and Liu and Mubayi gave a first not stable example. Another perhaps reason is that little is known about the set consisting of all possible Turán densities which has cardinality of the continuum. Let $t\ge 2$ be an integer. In this paper, we construct a finite family $\mathcal{M}_t$ of 3-uniform hypergraphs such that the Turán density of $\mathcal{M}_t$ is irrational, and there are $t$ near-extremal $\mathcal{M}_t$-free configurations that are far from each other in edit-distance. This is the first not stable example that has an irrational Turán density. It also provides a new phenomenon about feasible region functions.
MaxCut in graphs with sparse neighborhoods
Let $G$ be a graph with $m$ edges and let $\mathrm{mc}(G)$ denote the size of a largest cut of $G$. The difference $\mathrm{mc}(G)-m/2$ is called the surplus $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ of $G$. A fundamental problem in MaxCut is to determine $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ for $G$ without specific structure, and the degree sequence $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ of $G$ plays a key role in getting lower bounds of $\mathrm{sp}(G)$. A classical example, given by Shearer, is that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=Ω(\sum_{i=1}^n\sqrt d_i)$ for triangle-free graphs $G$, implying that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=Ω(m^{3/4})$. It was extended to graphs with sparse neighborhoods by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. In this paper, we establish a novel and stronger result for a more general family of graphs with sparse neighborhoods.
Our result can derive many well-known bounds on surplus of $H$-free graphs for different $H$, such as triangles, even cycles, graphs having a vertex whose removal makes them acyclic, or complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ with $s\in \{2,3\}$. It can also deduce many new (tight) bounds on $\mathrm{sp}(G)$ in $H$-free graphs $G$ when $H$ is any graph having a vertex whose removal results in a bipartite graph with relatively small Turán number, especially the even wheel. This contributes to a conjecture raised by Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov. Moreover, we obtain new families of graphs $H$ such that $\mathrm{sp}(G)=Ω(m^{3/4+ε(H)})$ for some constant $ε(H)>0$ in $H$-free graphs $G$, giving evidences to a conjecture suggested by Alon, Bollobás, Krivelevich and Sudakov.
A step towards a general density Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem
For a nondegenerate $r$-graph $F$, large $n$, and $t$ in the regime $[0, c_{F} n]$, where $c_F>0$ is a constant depending only on $F$, we present a general approach for determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph that does not contain $t+1$ vertex-disjoint copies of $F$. In fact, our method results in a rainbow version of the above result and includes a characterization of the extremal constructions.
Our approach applies to many well-studied hypergraphs (including graphs) such as the edge-critical graphs, the Fano plane, the generalized triangles, hypergraph expansions, the expanded triangles, and hypergraph books. Our results extend old results of Simonovits~\cite{SI68} and Moon~\cite{Moon68} on complete graphs and can be viewed as a step towards a general density version of the classical Corrádi--Hajnal Theorem~\cite{CH63}.

The Turán number of a graph $H$, $\text{ex}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. For a vertex $v$ and a multi-set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, the suspension $\mathcal{F}+v$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is the graph obtained by connecting the vertex $v$ to all vertices of $F$ for each $F\in \mathcal{F}$. For two integers $k\ge1$ and $r\ge2$, let $H_i$ be a graph containing a critical edge with chromatic number $r$ for any $i\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$, and let $H=\{H_1,\ldots,H_k\}+v$. In this paper, we determine $\text{ex}(n, H)$ and characterize all the extremal graphs for sufficiently large $n$. This generalizes a result of Chen, Gould, Pfender and Wei on intersecting cliques. We also obtain a stability theorem for $H$, extending a result of Roberts and Scott on graphs containing a critical edge.

An $\mathcal{F}$-saturated $r$-graph is a maximal $r$-graph not containing any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. Let $\mathcal{K}_{\ell + 1}^{r}$ be the collection of all $r$-graphs $F$ with at most $\binom{\ell+1}{2}$ edges such that for some $\left(\ell+1\right)$-set $S$ every pair $\{u, v\} \subset S$ is covered by an edge in $F$. Our first result shows that for each $\ell \geq r \geq 2$ every $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^{r}$-saturated $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with $t_{r}(n, \ell) - o(n^{r-1+1/\ell})$ edges contains a complete $\ell$-partite subgraph on $(1-o(1))n$ vertices, which extends a stability theorem for $K_{\ell+1}$-saturated graphs given by Popielarz, Sahasrabudhe and Snyder. We also show that the bound is best possible. Our second result is motivated by a celebrated theorem of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós which states that for $\ell \geq 2$ every $K_{\ell+1}$-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ(G) > \frac{3\ell-4}{3\ell-1}n$ is $\ell$-partite. We give a hypergraph version of it. The \emph{minimum positive co-degree} of an $r$-graph $\mathcal{H}$, denoted by $δ_{r-1}^{+}(\mathcal{H})$, is the maximum $k$ such that if $S$ is an $(r-1)$-set contained in a edge of $\mathcal{H}$, then $S$ is contained in at least $k$ distinct edges of $\mathcal{H}$. Let $\ell\ge 3$ be an integer and $\mathcal{H}$ be a $\mathcal{K}_{\ell+1}^3$-saturated $3$-graph on $n$ vertices. We prove that if either $\ell \ge 4$ and $δ_{2}^{+}(\mathcal{H}) > \frac{3\ell-7}{3\ell-1}n$; or $\ell = 3$ and $δ_{2}^{+}(\mathcal{H}) > 2n/7$, then $\mathcal{H}$ is $\ell$-partite; and the bound is best possible. This is the first stability result on minimum positive co-degree for hypergraphs.
Generating non-jumps from a known one

Let $r\ge 2$ be an integer. The real number $α\in [0,1]$ is a jump for $r$ if there exists a constant $c > 0$ such that for any $ε>0$ and any integer $m \geq r$, there exists an integer $n_0(ε, m)$ satisfying any $r$-uniform graph with $n\ge n_0(ε, m)$ vertices and density at least $α+ε$ contains a subgraph with $m$ vertices and density at least $α+c$. A result of Erdős, Stone and Simonovits implies that every $α\in [0,1)$ is a jump for $r=2$. Erdős asked whether the same is true for $r\ge 3$. Frankl and Rödl gave a negative answer by showing that $1-\frac{1}{l^{r-1}}$ is not a jump for $r$ if $r\ge 3$ and $l>2r$. After that, more non-jumps are found using a method of Frankl and Rödl. In this note, we show a method to construct maps $f \colon [0,1] \to [0,1]$ that preserve non-jumps, if $α$ is a non-jump for $r$ given by the method of Frankl and Rödl, then $f(α)$ is also a non-jump for $r$. We use these maps to study hypergraph Turán densities and answer a question posed by Grosu.
Hypergraphs with infinitely many extremal constructions
We give the first exact and stability results for a hypergraph Turán problem with infinitely many extremal constructions that are far from each other in edit-distance. This includes an example of triple systems with Turán density $2/9$, thus answering some questions posed by the third and fourth authors and Reiher about the feasible region of hypergraphs. Our results also provide extremal constructions whose shadow density is a transcendental number.
Our novel approach is to construct certain multilinear polynomials that attain their maximum (in the standard simplex) on a line segment and then to use these polynomials to define an operation on hypergraphs that gives extremal constructions.
A bound on judicious bipartitions of directed graphs

Judicious partitioning problems on graphs ask for partitions that bound several quantities simultaneously, which have received a lot of attentions lately. Scott asked the following natural question: What is the maximum constant $c_d$ such that every directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs and minimum outdegree $d$ admits a bipartition $V(D)= V_1\cup V_2$ satisfying $\min\{e(V_1, V_2), e(V_2, V_1)\}\ge c_d m$? Here, for $i=1,2$, $e(V_{i},V_{3-i})$ denotes the number of arcs in $D$ from $V_{i}$ to $V_{3-i}$. Lee, Loh, and Sudakov %[Judicious partitions of directed graphs, Random Struct. Alg. 48 %(2016) 147--170] conjectured that every directed graph $D$ with $m$ arcs and minimum outdegree at least $d\ge 2$ admits a bipartition $V(D)=V_1\cup V_2$ such that \[ \min\{e(V_1,V_2),e(V_2,V_1)\}\geq \Big(\frac{d-1}{2(2d-1)}+ o(1)\Big)m. \] %While it is not known whether or not the minimum outdegree condition %alone is sufficient, w We show that this conjecture holds under the additional natural condition that the minimum indegree is also at least $d$.
