Oriented hypergraphs and generalizing the Harary-Sachs theorem to integer matrices
Incidence-based generalizations of cycle covers, called contributors, extend the Harary-Sachs coefficient theorem for characteristic polynomials of the adjacency matrix of graphs. All minors of the Laplacian resulting from an integer matrix are characterized using their associated oriented hypergraph through a new minimal collection of contributors to produce the coefficients of the total-minor polynomial. We prove that the natural grouping of contributors via tail-equivalence is necessarily cancellative for any contributor family that reuses an edge. We then provide a new combinatorial proof on the non-0 isospectrality of the traditional characteristic polynomials of the Laplacian and its dual.

The determinants of $\{\pm 1\}$-matrices are calculated by via the oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and summing over an incidence generalization of vertex cycle-covers. These cycle-covers are signed and partitioned into families based on their hyperedge containment. Every non-edge-monic family is shown to contribute a net value of $0$ to the Laplacian, while each edge-monic family is shown to sum to the absolute value of the determinant of the original incidence matrix. Simple symmetries are identified as well as their relationship to Hadamard's maximum determinant problem. Finally, the entries of the incidence matrix are reclaimed using only the signs of an adjacency-minimal set of cycle-covers from an edge-monic family.
Generalizing Kirchhoff laws for Signed Graphs
Kirchhoff-type Laws for signed graphs are characterized by generalizing transpedances through the incidence-oriented structure of bidirected graphs. The classical $2$-arborescence interpretation of Tutte is shown to be equivalent to single-element Boolean classes of reduced incidence-based cycle covers, called contributors. A generalized contributor-transpedance is introduced using entire Boolean classes that naturally cancel in a graph; classical conservation is proven to be property of the trivial Boolean classes. The contributor-transpedances on signed graphs are shown to produce non-conservative Kirchhoff-type Laws, where every contributor possesses the unique source-sink path property. Finally, the maximum value of a contributor-transpedance is calculated through the signless Laplacian.
Incidence Hypergraphs: Box Products & the Laplacian
The box product and its associated box exponential are characterized for the categories of quivers (directed graphs), multigraphs, set system hypergraphs, and incidence hypergraphs. It is shown that only the quiver case of the box exponential can be characterized via homs entirely within their own category. An asymmetry in the incidence hypergraphic box product is rectified via an incidence dual-closed generalization that effectively treats vertices and edges as real and imaginary parts of a complex number, respectively. This new hypergraphic box product is shown to have a natural interpretation as the canonical box product for graphs via the bipartite representation functor, and its associated box exponential is represented as homs entirely in the category of incidence hypergraphs; with incidences determined by incidence-prism mapping. The evaluation of the box exponential at paths is shown to correspond to the entries in half-powers of the oriented hypergraphic signless Laplacian matrix.

An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that extends the concepts of signed graphs, balanced hypergraphs, and balanced matrices. We introduce hypergraphic structures and techniques that generalize the circuit classification of the signed graphic frame matroid to any oriented hypergraphic incidence matrix via its locally-signed-graphic substructure. To achieve this, Camion's algorithm is applied to oriented hypergraphs to provide a generalization of reorientation sets and frustration that is only well-defined on balanceable oriented hypergraphs. A simple partial characterization of unbalanceable circuits extends the applications to representable matroids demonstrating that the difference between the Fano and non-Fano matroids is one of balance.

An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that allows for the generalization of graph theoretic concepts to integer matrices through its locally signed graphic substructure. The locally graphic behaviors are formalized in the subobject classifier of incidence hypergraphs. Moreover, the injective envelope is calculated and shown to contain the class of uniform hypergraphs -- providing a combinatorial framework for the entries of incidence matrices. A multivariable all-minors characteristic polynomial is obtained for both the determinant and permanent of the oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and adjacency matrices arising from any integer incidence matrix. The coefficients of each polynomial are shown to be submonic maps from the same family into the injective envelope limited by the subobject classifier. These results provide a unifying theorem for oriented hypergraphic matrix-tree-type and Sachs-coefficient-type theorems. Finally, by specializing to bidirected graphs, the trivial subclasses for the degree-$k$ monomials of the Laplacian are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with $k$-arborescences.

This paper considers the difficulty in the set-system approach to generalizing graph theory. These difficulties arise categorically as the category of set-system hypergraphs is shown not to be cartesian closed and lacks enough projective objects, unlike the category of directed multigraphs (i.e. quivers). The category of incidence hypergraphs is introduced as a "graph-like" remedy for the set-system issues so that hypergraphs may be studied by their locally graphic behavior via homomorphisms that allow an edge of the domain to be mapped into a subset of an edge in the codomain. Moreover, it is shown that the category of quivers embeds into the category of incidence hypergraphs via a logical functor that is the inverse image of an essential geometric morphism between the topoi. Consequently, the quiver exponential is shown to be simply represented using incidence hypergraph homomorphisms.

Restrictions of incidence-preserving path maps produce an oriented hypergraphic All Minors Matrix-tree Theorems for Laplacian and adjacency matrices. The images of these maps produce a locally signed graphic, incidence generalization, of cycle covers and basic figures that correspond to incidence-k-forests. When restricted to bidirected graphs the natural partial ordering of maps results in disjoint signed boolean lattices whose minor calculations correspond to principal order ideals. As an application, (1) the determinant formula of a signed graphic Laplacian is reclaimed and shown to be determined by the maximal positive-circle-free elements, and (2) spanning trees are equivalent to single-element order ideals.

An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that generalizes and unifies graph and hypergraph theoretic results by examining its locally signed graphic substructure. In this paper we obtain a combinatorial characterization of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of oriented hypergraphic Laplacian and adjacency matrices via a signed hypergraphic generalization of basic figures of graphs. Additionally, we provide bounds on the determinant and permanent of the Laplacian matrix, characterize the oriented hypergraphs in which the upper bound is sharp, and demonstrate that the lower bound is never achieved.

An oriented hypergraph is a hypergraph where each vertex-edge incidence is given a label of $+1$ or $-1$. We define the adjacency, incidence and Laplacian matrices of an oriented hypergraph and study each of them. We extend several matrix results known for graphs and signed graphs to oriented hypergraphs. New matrix results that are not direct generalizations are also presented. Finally, we study a new family of matrices that contains walk information.

An oriented hypergraph is an oriented incidence structure that extends the concept of a signed graph. We introduce hypergraphic structures and techniques central to the extension of the circuit classification of signed graphs to oriented hypergraphs. Oriented hypergraphs are further decomposed into three families -- balanced, balanceable, and unbalanceable -- and we obtain a complete classification of the balanced circuits of oriented hypergraphs.
