The optimal edge-colouring threshold
Consider any dense r-regular quasirandom bipartite graph H with parts of size n and fix a set of r colours. Let L be a random list assignment where each colour is available for each edge of H with probability p. We show that the threshold probability for H to have a proper L-edge-colouring is p of order (log n)/n. This answers a question of Kang, Kelly, Kühn, Methuku and Osthus. We thus obtain the same threshold for Steiner Triple Systems and Latin squares; the latter answers a question of Johanssen from 2006.

The existence of subspace designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the existence of subspace designs with any given parameters, provided that the dimension of the underlying space is sufficiently large in terms of the other parameters of the design and satisfies the obvious necessary divisibility conditions. This settles an open problem from the 1970s. Moreover, we also obtain an approximate formula for the number of such designs.

Finding matchings in dense hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the algorithmic decision problem that takes as input an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree at least $m-c$ and decides whether it has a matching of size $m$. We show that this decision problem is fixed parameter tractable with respect to $c$. Furthermore, our algorithm not only decides the problem, but actually either finds a matching of size $m$ or a certificate that no such matching exists. In particular, when $m=n/k$ and $c=O(\log n)$, this gives a polynomial-time algorithm, that given any $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree at least $n/k-c$, finds either a perfect matching in $H$ or a certificate that no perfect matching exists.

On the Largest Product-free Subsets of the Alternating Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset $A$ of a group $G$ is called product-free if there is no solution to $a=bc$ with $a,b,c$ all in $A$. It is easy to see that the largest product-free subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ is obtained by taking the set of all odd permutations, i.e. $S_n \setminus A_n$, where $A_n$ is the alternating group. By contrast, it is a long-standing open problem to find the largest product-free subset of $A_n$. We solve this problem for large $n$, showing that the maximum size is achieved by the previously conjectured extremal examples, namely families of the form $\{π~|~π(x)\in I, π(I)\cap I=\emptyset\}$ and their inverses. Moreover, we show that the maximum size is only achieved by these extremal examples, and we have stability: any product-free subset of $A_n$ of nearly maximum size is structurally close to an extremal example. Our proof uses a combination of tools from Combinatorics and Non-abelian Fourier Analysis, including a crucial new ingredient exploiting some recent theory developed by Filmus, Kindler, Liftshitz and Minzer for global hypercontractivity on the symmetric group.

The $n$-queens problem
The famous $n$-queens problem asks how many ways there are to place $n$ queens on an $n \times n$ chessboard so that no two queens can attack one another. The toroidal $n$-queens problem asks the same question where the board is considered on the surface of the torus and was asked by Pólya in 1918. Let $Q(n)$ denote the number of $n$-queens configurations on the classical board and $T(n)$ the number of toroidal $n$-queens configurations. Pólya showed that $T(n)>0$ if and only if $n \equiv 1,5 \mod 6$ and much more recently, in 2017, Luria showed that $T(n)\leq ((1+o(1))ne^{-3})^n$ and conjectured equality when $n \equiv 1,5 \mod 6$. Our main result is a proof of this conjecture, thus answering Pólya's question asymptotically. Furthermore, we also show that $Q(n)\geq((1+o(1))ne^{-3})^n$ for all $n$ sufficiently large, which was independently proved by Luria and Simkin. Combined with our main result and an upper bound of Luria, this completely settles a conjecture of Rivin, Vardi and Zimmmerman from 1994 regarding both $Q(n)$ and $T(n)$. Our proof combines a random greedy algorithm to count 'almost' configurations with a complex absorbing strategy that uses ideas from the recently developed methods of randomised algebraic construction and iterative absorption.

Global hypercontractivity and its applications
The hypercontractive inequality on the discrete cube plays a crucial role in many fundamental results in the Analysis of Boolean functions, such as the KKL theorem, Friedgut's junta theorem and the invariance principle. In these results the cube is equipped with the uniform measure, but it is desirable, particularly for applications to the theory of sharp thresholds, to also obtain such results for general $p$-biased measures. However, simple examples show that when $p = o(1)$, there is no hypercontractive inequality that is strong enough. In this paper, we establish an effective hypercontractive inequality for general $p$ that applies to `global functions', i.e. functions that are not significantly affected by a restriction of a small set of coordinates. This class of functions appears naturally, e.g. in Bourgain's sharp threshold theorem, which states that such functions exhibit a sharp threshold. We demonstrate the power of our tool by strengthening Bourgain's theorem, thereby making progress on a conjecture of Kahn and Kalai and by establishing a $p$-biased analog of the invariance principle. Our results have significant applications in Extremal Combinatorics. Here we obtain new results on the Turán number of any bounded degree uniform hypergraph obtained as the expansion of a hypergraph of bounded uniformity. These are asymptotically sharp over an essentially optimal regime for both the uniformity and the number of edges and solve a number of open problems in the area. In particular, we give general conditions under which the crosscut parameter asymptotically determines the Turán number, answering a question of Mubayi and Verstraëte. We also apply the Junta Method to refine our asymptotic results and obtain several exact results, including proofs of the Huang--Loh--Sudakov conjecture on cross matchings and the Füredi--Jiang--Seiver conjecture on path expansions.

Forbidden intersections for codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Determining the maximum size of a $t$-intersecting code in $[m]^n$ was a longstanding open problem of Frankl and Füredi, solved independently by Ahlswede and Khachatrian and by Frankl and Tokushige. We extend their result to the setting of forbidden intersections, by showing that for any $m>2$ and $n$ large compared with $t$ (but not necessarily $m$) that the same bound holds for codes with the weaker property of being $(t-1)$-avoiding, i.e.\ having no two vectors that agree on exactly $t-1$ coordinates. Our proof proceeds via a junta approximation result of independent interest, which we prove via a development of our recent theory of global hypercontractivity: we show that any $(t-1)$-avoiding code is approximately contained in a $t$-intersecting junta (a code where membership is determined by a constant number of co-ordinates). In particular, when $t=1$ this gives an alternative proof of a recent result of Eberhard, Kahn, Narayanan and Spirkl that symmetric intersecting codes in $[m]^n$ have size $o(m^n)$.

Homomorphisms from the torus
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a detailed probabilistic and structural analysis of the set of weighted homomorphisms from the discrete torus $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$, where $m$ is even, to any fixed graph: we show that the corresponding probability distribution on such homomorphisms is close to a distribution defined constructively as a certain random perturbation of some dominant phase. This has several consequences, including solutions (in a strong form) to conjectures of Engbers and Galvin and a conjecture of Kahn and Park. Special cases include sharp asymptotics for the number of independent sets and the number of proper $q$-colourings of $\mathbb{Z}_m^n$ (so in particular, the discrete hypercube). We give further applications to the study of height functions and (generalised) rank functions on the discrete hypercube and disprove a conjecture of Kahn and Lawrenz. For the proof we combine methods from statistical physics, entropy and graph containers and exploit isoperimetric and algebraic properties of the torus.

The Brown-Erdős-Sós Conjecture for hypergraphs of large uniformity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove the well-known Brown-Erdős-Sós Conjecture for hypergraphs of large uniformity in the following form: any dense linear $r$-graph $G$ has $k$ edges spanning at most $(r-2)k+3$ vertices, provided the uniformity $r$ of $G$ is large enough given the linear density of $G$, and the number of vertices of $G$ is large enough given $r$ and $k$.
Isoperimetric stability in lattices

We obtain isoperimetric stability theorems for general Cayley digraphs on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. For any fixed $B$ that generates $\mathbb{Z}^d$ over $\mathbb{Z}$, we characterise the approximate structure of large sets $A$ that are approximately isoperimetric in the Cayley digraph of $B$: we show that $A$ must be close to a set of the form $kZ \cap \mathbb{Z}^d$, where for the vertex boundary $Z$ is the conical hull of $B$, and for the edge boundary $Z$ is the zonotope generated by $B$.
New bounds for Ryser's conjecture and related problems

A Latin square of order $n$ is an $n \times n$ array filled with $n$ symbols such that each symbol appears only once in every row or column and a transversal is a collection of cells which do not share the same row, column or symbol. The study of Latin squares goes back more than 200 years to the work of Euler. One of the most famous open problems in this area is a conjecture of Ryser-Brualdi-Stein from 60s which says that every Latin square of order $n\times n$ contains a transversal of order $n-1$. In this paper we prove the existence of a transversal of order $n-O(\log{n}/\log{\log{n}})$, improving the celebrated bound of $n-O(\log^2n)$ by Hatami and Shor. Our approach (different from that of Hatami-Shor) is quite general and gives several other applications as well. We obtain a new lower bound on a 40 year old conjecture of Brouwer on the maximum matching in Steiner triple systems, showing that every such system of order $n$ is guaranteed to have a matching of size $n/3-O(\log{n}/\log{\log{n}})$. This substantially improves the current best result of Alon, Kim and Spencer which has the error term of order $n^{1/2+o(1)}$. Finally, we also show that $O(n\log{n}/\log{\log{n}})$ many symbols in Latin arrays suffice to guarantee a full transversal, improving on previously known bound of $n^{2-\varepsilon}$. The proofs combine in a novel way the semirandom method together with the robust expansion properties of edge coloured pseudorandom graphs to show the existence of a rainbow matching covering all but $O(\log n/\log{\log{n}})$ vertices. All previous results, based on the semi-random method, left uncovered at least $Ω(n^α)$ (for some constant $α$) vertices.

Ringel's tree packing conjecture in quasirandom graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that any quasirandom graph with $n$ vertices and $rn$ edges can be decomposed into $n$ copies of any fixed tree with $r$ edges. The case of decomposing a complete graph establishes a conjecture of Ringel from 1963.
A universal exponent for homeomorphs

We prove a uniform bound on the topological Turán number of an arbitrary two-dimensional simplicial complex $S$: any $n$-vertex two-dimensional complex with at least $C_S n^{3-1/5}$ facets contains a homeomorphic copy of $S$, where $C_S > 0$ is an absolute constant depending on $S$ alone. This result, a two-dimensional analogue of a classical result of Mader for one-dimensional complexes, sheds some light on an old problem of Linial from 2006.
The extremal number of Venn diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that there exists an absolute constant $C>0$ such that any family $\mathcal{F}\subset \{0,1\}^n$ of size at least $Cn^3$ has dual VC-dimension at least 3. Equivalently, every family of size at least $Cn^3$ contains three sets such that all eight regions of their Venn diagram are non-empty. This improves upon the $Cn^{3.75}$ bound of Gupta, Lee and Li and is sharp up to the value of the constant.
Distinct degrees in induced subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An important theme of recent research in Ramsey theory has been establishing pseudorandomness properties of Ramsey graphs. An $N$-vertex graph is called $C$-Ramsey if it has no homogeneous set of size $C\log N$. A theorem of Bukh and Sudakov, solving a conjecture of Erdős, Faudree and Sós, shows that any $C$-Ramsey $N$-vertex graph contains an induced subgraph with $Ω_C(N^{1/2})$ distinct degrees. We improve this to $Ω_C(N^{2/3})$, which is tight up to the constant factor. We also show that any $N$-vertex graph with $N > (k-1)(n-1)$ and $n\geq n_0(k) = Ω(k^9)$ either contains a homogeneous set of order $n$ or an induced subgraph with $k$ distinct degrees. The lower bound on $N$ here is sharp, as shown by an appropriate Turán graph, and confirms a conjecture of Narayanan and Tomon.

Hypercontractivity for global functions and sharp thresholds
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical hypercontractive inequality for the noise operator on the discrete cube plays a crucial role in many of the fundamental results in the Analysis of Boolean functions, such as the KKL (Kahn-Kalai-Linial) theorem, Friedgut's junta theorem and the invariance principle of Mossel, O'Donnell and Oleszkiewicz. In these results the cube is equipped with the uniform ($1/2$-biased) measure, but it is desirable, particularly for applications to the theory of sharp thresholds, to also obtain such results for general $p$-biased measures. However, simple examples show that when $p$ is small there is no hypercontractive inequality that is strong enough for such applications. In this paper, we establish an effective hypercontractivity inequality for general $p$ that applies to `global functions', i.e. functions that are not significantly affected by a restriction of a small set of coordinates. This class of functions appears naturally, e.g. in Bourgain's sharp threshold theorem, which states that such functions exhibit a sharp threshold. We demonstrate the power of our tool by strengthening Bourgain's theorem, thereby making progress on a conjecture of Kahn and Kalai. An additional application of our hypercontractivity theorem, is a $p$-biased analog of the seminal invariance principle of Mossel, O'Donnell, and Oleszkiewicz. In a companion paper, we give applications to the solution of two open problems in Extremal Combinatorics.

Stability for vertex isoperimetry in the cube
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a stability version of Harper's cube vertex isoperimetric inequality, showing that subsets of the cube with vertex boundary close to the minimum possible are close to (generalised) Hamming balls. Furthermore, we obtain a local stability result for ball-like sets that gives a sharp estimate for the vertex boundary in terms of the distance from a ball, and so our stability result is essentially tight (modulo a non-monotonicity phenomenon). We also give similar results for the Kruskal--Katona Theorem and applications to new stability versions of some other results in Extremal Combinatorics.

Cycle-complete Ramsey numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Ramsey number $r(C_{\ell},K_n)$ is the smallest natural number $N$ such that every red/blue edge-colouring of a clique of order $N$ contains a red cycle of length $\ell$ or a blue clique of order $n$. In 1978, Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp conjectured that $r(C_{\ell},K_n) = (\ell-1)(n-1)+1$ for $\ell \geq n\geq 3$ provided $(\ell,n) \neq (3,3)$. We prove that, for some absolute constant $C\ge 1$, we have $r(C_{\ell},K_n) = (\ell-1)(n-1)+1$ provided $\ell \geq C\frac {\log n}{\log \log n}$. Up to the value of $C$ this is tight since we also show that, for any $\varepsilon >0$ and $n> n_0(\varepsilon )$, we have $r(C_{\ell }, K_n) \gg (\ell -1)(n-1)+1$ for all $3 \leq \ell \leq (1-\varepsilon )\frac {\log n}{\log \log n}$. This proves the conjecture of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp for large $\ell $, a stronger form of the conjecture due to Nikiforov, and answers (up to multiplicative constants) two further questions of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp.
