Curvature and local matchings of conference graphs and extensions
We prove a conjecture of Bonini et al. on the precise values of the Lin--Lu--Yau curvature of conference graphs, i.e., strongly regular graphs with parameters $(4γ+1,2γ,γ-1,γ)$. Our method depends only on the parameter relations and applies to broader classes of amply regular graphs. In particular, we develop a new combinatorial approach to show the existence of local perfect matchings. A key observation is that counting common neighbors leads to useful quadratic polynomials. As a corollary, we derive an interesting number-theoretic result concerning quadratic residues.
Discrete trace formulas and holomorphic functional calculus for the adjacency matrix of regular graphs
We provide a unified method to study the adjacency matrices of regular graphs (including infinite ones) using holomorphic functional calculus. By applying this calculus on a specific ellipse that contains the spectrum, we derive an expansion of $h(A)$ using non-backtracking matrices. This framework allows us to systematically obtain discrete trace formulas that link spectral theory with graph combinatorics. To show how this method works, we give new proofs for several well-known problems, such as walk counting, the Ihara-Bass formula, and solutions to the heat and Schrödinger equations on graphs.
Spectral convergence of random regular graphs: Chebyshev polynomials, non-backtracking walks, and unitary-color extensions
In this paper, we give a short proof of the weak convergence to the Kesten-McKay distribution for the normalized spectral measures of random $N$-lifts. This result is derived by generalizing a formula of Friedman involving Chebyshev polynomials and non-backtracking walks. We also extend a criterion of Sodin on the convergence of graph spectral measures to regular graphs of growing degree. As a result, we show that for a sequence of random $(q_n+1)$-regular graphs $G_n$ with $n$ vertices, if $q_n = n^{o(1)}$ and $q_n$ tends to infinity, the normalized spectral measure converges almost surely in $p$-Wasserstein distance to the semicircle distribution for any $p \in [1, \infty)$. This strengthens a result of Dumitriu and Pal. Many of the results are extended to unitary-colored regular graphs.

In this note, we provide Steinerberger curvature formulas for block graphs, discuss curvature relations between two graphs and the graph obtained by connecting them via a bridge, and show that self-centered Bonnet-Myers sharp graphs are precisely those which are antipodal. We also discuss similarities and differences between Steinerberger and Ollivier Ricci curvature results.
Curvature, diameter and signs of graphs
We prove a Li-Yau type eigenvalue-diameter estimate for signed graphs. That is, the nonzero eigenvalues of the Laplacian of a non-negatively curved signed graph are lower bounded by $1/D^2$ up to a constant, where $D$ stands for the diameter. This leads to several interesting applications, including a volume estimate for non-negatively curved signed graphs in terms of frustration index and diameter, and a two-sided Li-Yau estimate for triangle-free graphs. Our proof is built upon a combination of Chung-Lin-Yau type gradient estimate and a new trick involving strong nodal domain walks of signed graphs. We further discuss extensions of part of our results to nonlinear Laplacians on signed graphs.
Bakry-Émery calculus for entropic curvature, new diameter estimates, and spectral gaps
In this paper, we propose a generalization of Bakry-Émery's calculus which allows us to formulate both Bakry-Émery and entropic curvature simultaneously. This formulation represents both curvatures as an integral of the Bochner formula against some measure. This leads to a natural optimality criterion of measures, which we investigate in the Bakry-Émery setting. Moreover, our approach leads also to a dimension parameter in the framework of entropic curvature.
We also present gradient estimate applications, that is, diameter estimates for Markov chains with strictly positive entropic curvature and a spectral gap estimate. The latter implies non-existence of non-negatively curved expanders.
On the nontrivial extremal eigenvalues of graphs
We present a finer quantitative version of an observation due to Breuillard, Green, Guralnick and Tao which tells that for finite non-bipartite Cayley graphs, once the nontrivial eigenvalues of their normalized adjacency matrices are uniformly bounded away from $1$, then they are also uniformly bounded away from $-1$. Unlike previous works which depend heavily on combinatorial arguments, we rely more on analysis of eigenfunctions. We establish a new explicit lower bound for the gap between $-1$ and the smallest normalized adjacency eigenvalue, which improves previous lower bounds in terms of edge-expansion, and is comparable to the best known lower bound in terms of vertex-expansion.
Bakry-Émery and Ollivier Ricci Curvature of Cayley Graphs
In this article we study two discrete curvature notions, Bakry-Émery curvature and Ollivier Ricci curvature, on Cayley graphs. We introduce Right Angled Artin-Coxeter Hybrids (RAACHs) generalizing Right Angled Artin and Coxeter groups (RAAGs and RACGs) and derive the curvatures of Cayley graphs of certain RAACHs. Moreover, we show for general finitely presented groups $Γ= \langle S \, \mid\, R \rangle$ that addition of relators does not lead to a decrease the weighted curvatures of their Cayley graphs with adapted weighting schemes.
New graph invariants based on $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues
We present monotonicity inequalities for certain functions involving eigenvalues of $p$-Laplacians on signed graphs with respect to $p$. Inspired by such monotonicity, we propose new spectrum-based graph invariants, called (variational) cut-off adjacency eigenvalues, that are relevant to certain eigenvector-dependent nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Using these invariants, we obtain new lower bounds for the $p$-Laplacian variational eigenvalues, essentially giving the state-of-the-art spectral asymptotics for these eigenvalues. Moreover, based on such invariants, we establish two inertia bounds regarding the cardinalities of a maximum independent set and a minimum edge cover, respectively. The first inertia bound enhances the classical Cvetković bound, and the second one implies that the $k$-th $p$-Laplacian variational eigenvalue is of the order $2^p$ as $p$ tends to infinity whenever $k$ is larger than the cardinality of a minimum edge cover of the underlying graph. We further discover an interesting connection between graph $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues and tensor eigenvalues and discuss applications of our invariants to spectral problems of tensors.
Vertex isoperimetry on signed graphs and spectra of non-bipartite Cayley and Cayley sum graphs

For a non-bipartite finite Cayley graph, we show the non-trivial eigenvalues of its normalized adjacency matrix lie in the interval $$\left[-1+\frac{ch_{out}^2}{d},1-\frac{Ch_{out}^2}{d}\right],$$ for some absolute constant $c$ and $C$, where $h_{out}$ stands for the outer vertex boundary isoperimetric constant. This improves upon recent obtained estimates aiming at a quantitative version of a result due to Breuillard, Green, Guralnick and Tao. We achieve this by extending the work of Bobkov, Houdré and Tetali on vertex isoperimetry to the setting of signed graphs. We further extend our interval estimate to the settings of vertex transitive graphs and Cayley sum graphs. As a byproduct, we answer positively open questions proposed recently by Moorman, Ralli and Tetali.

We develop a systematical way of constructing S-Ricci flat graphs which are not Abelian Cayley via graph bundle with explicit examples. For this purpose, we prove that, with some natural constrains, a non-trivial graph bundle can not be isomorphic (as graphs) to the product of the base graph and fiber graph. It stands in clear contrast to the continuous case.

In this second part of a sequence of two papers, we discuss the implementation of a curvature flow on weighted graphs based on the Bakry-Émery calculus. This flow can be adapted to preserve the Markovian property and its limits as time goes to infinity turn out to be curvature sharp weighted graphs. After reviewing some of the main results of the first paper concerned with the theoretical aspects, we present various examples (random graphs, paths, cycles, complete graphs, wedge sums and Cartesian products of complete graphs, hypercubes) and exhibit further properties of this flow. One particular aspect in our investigations is asymptotic stability and instability of curvature flow equilibria. The paper ends with a description of the available Python functions and routines available in the ancillary file. We hope that the explanations of the Python implementation via examples will help users to carry out their own curvature flow experiments.

An amply regular graph is a regular graph such that any two adjacent vertices have $α$ common neighbors and any two vertices with distance $2$ have $β$ common neighbors. We prove a sharp lower bound estimate for the Lin--Lu--Yau curvature of any amply regular graph with girth $3$ and $β>α$. The proof involves new ideas relating discrete Ricci curvature with local matching properties: This includes a novel construction of a regular bipartite graph from the local structure and related distance estimates. As a consequence, we obtain sharp diameter and eigenvalue bounds for amply regular graphs.
Discrete Bakry-Émery curvature tensors and matrices of connection graphs
Connection graphs are natural extensions of Harary's signed graphs. The Bakry-Émery curvature of connection graphs has been introduced by Liu, Münch and Peyerimhoff in order to establish Buser type eigenvalue estimates for connection Laplacians. In this paper, we reformulate the Bakry-Émery curvature of a vertex in a connection graph in terms of the smallest eigenvalue of a family of unitarily equivalent curvature matrices. We further interpret this family of curvature matrices as the matrix representations of a new defined curvature tensor with respect to different orthonormal basis of the tangent space at a vertex. This is a strong extension of previous works of Cushing-Kamtue-Liu-Peyerimhoff and Siconolfi on curvature matrices of graphs. Moreover, we study the Bakry-Émery curvature of Cartesian products of connection graphs, strengthening the previous result of Liu, Münch and Peyerimhoff. While results of a vertex with locally balanced structure cover previous works, various interesting phenomena of locally unbalanced connection structure have been clarified.

We establish various nodal domain theorems for $p$-Laplacians on signed graphs, which unify most of the existing results on nodal domains of graph $p$-Laplacians and arbitrary symmetric matrices. Based on our nodal domain estimates, we obtain a higher order Cheeger inequality that relates the variational eigenvalues of $p$-Laplacians and Atay-Liu's multi-way Cheeger constants on signed graphs. In the particular case of $p=1$, this leads to several identities relating variational eigenvalues and multi-way Cheeger constants. Intriguingly, our approach also leads to new results on usual graphs, including a weak version of Sturm's oscillation theorem for graph $1$-Laplacians and nonexistence of eigenvalues between the largest and second largest variational eigenvalues of $p$-Laplacians with $p>1$ on connected bipartite graphs.
Bakry-Émery curvature sharpness and curvature flow in finite weighted graphs. I. Theory
In this sequence of two papers, we introduce a curvature flow on (mixed) weighted graphs which is based on the Bakry-Émery calculus. The flow is described via a time-continuous evolution through the weighting schemes. By adapting this flow to preserve the Markovian property, its limits turn out to be curvature sharp. Our aim is to present the flow in the most general case of not necessarily reversible random walks allowing laziness, including vanishing transition probabilities along some edges ("degenerate" edges). This approach requires to extend all concepts (in particular, the Bakry-Émery curvature related notions) to this general case and it leads to a distinction between the underlying topology (a mixed combinatorial graph) and the weighting scheme (given by transition rates). We present various results about curvature sharp vertices and weighted graphs as well as some fundamental properties of this new curvature flow. This paper is accompanied by a second paper discussing the curvature flow implementation in Python for practical use. In this second paper we present examples and exhibit further properties of the flow.

In 2001, Davies, Gladwell, Leydold, and Stadler proved discrete nodal domain theorems for eigenfunctions of generalized Laplacians, i.e., symmetric matrices with non-positive off-diagonal entries. In this paper, we establish nodal domain theorems for arbitrary symmetric matrices by exploring the induced signed graph structure. Our concepts of nodal domains for any function on a signed graph are switching invariant. When the induced signed graph is balanced, our definitions and upper bound estimates reduce to existing results for generalized Laplacians. Our approach provides a more conceptual understanding of Fiedler's results on eigenfunctions of acyclic matrices. This new viewpoint leads to lower bound estimates for the number of strong nodal domains which improves previous results of Berkolaiko and Xu-Yau. We also prove a new type of lower bound estimates by a duality argument.

By Hall's marriage theorem, we study lower bounds of the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature of amply regular graphs with girth $3$ or $4$ under different parameter restrictions. As a consequence, we show that each conference graph has positive Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. Our approach also provides a geometric proof of a classical diameter estimate for amply regular graphs in the case of girth $4$ and some special cases of girth $3$.

In this paper, we reformulate the Bakry-Émery curvature on a weighted graph in terms of the smallest eigenvalue of a rank one perturbation of the so-called curvature matrix using Schur complement. This new viewpoint allows us to show various curvature function properties in a very conceptual way. We show that the curvature, as a function of the dimension parameter, is analytic, strictly monotone increasing and strictly concave until a certain threshold after which the function is constant. Furthermore, we derive the curvature of the Cartesian product using the crucial observation that the curvature matrix of the product is the direct sum of each component. Our approach of the curvature functions of graphs can be employed to establish analogous results for the curvature functions of weighted Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, as an application, we confirm a conjecture (in a general weighted case) of the fact that the curvature does not decrease under certain graph modifications.

In this paper, we compare Ollivier Ricci curvature and Bakry-Émery curvature notions on combinatorial graphs and discuss connections to various types of Ricci flatness. We show that non-negativity of Ollivier Ricci curvature implies non-negativity of Bakry-Émery curvature under triangle-freeness and an additional in-degree condition. We also provide examples that both conditions of this result are necessary. We investigate relations to graph products and show that Ricci flatness is preserved under all natural products. While non-negativity of both curvatures are preserved under Cartesian products, we show that in the case of strong products, non-negativity of Ollivier Ricci curvature is only preserved for horizontal and vertical edges. We also prove that all distance-regular graphs of girth $4$ attain their maximal possible curvature values.
