Independent transversals in bipartite correspondence-covers
Published in Canadian Mathematical Bulletin , Volume 65 , Issue 4 , December 2022 , pp. 882 - 894 • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $G$ and $H$ are bipartite graphs and $L: V(G)\to 2^{V(H)}$ induces a partition of $V(H)$ such that the subgraph of $H$ induced between $L(v)$ and $L(v')$ is a matching whenever $vv'\in E(G)$. We show for each $\varepsilon>0$ that, if $H$ has maximum degree $D$ and $|L(v)| \ge (1+\varepsilon)D/\log D$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then $H$ admits an independent transversal with respect to $L$, provided $D$ is sufficiently large. This bound on the part sizes is asymptotically sharp up to a factor $2$. We also show some asymmetric variants of this result.

Five results on maximizing topological indices in graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23, no. 3, Graph Theory (November 15, 2021) dmtcs:6896 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we prove a collection of results on graphical indices. We determine the extremal graphs attaining the maximal generalized Wiener index (e.g. the hyper-Wiener index) among all graphs with given matching number or independence number. This generalizes some work of Dankelmann, as well as some work of Chung. We also show alternative proofs for two recents results on maximizing the Wiener index and external Wiener index by deriving it from earlier results. We end with proving two conjectures. We prove that the maximum for the difference of the Wiener index and the eccentricity is attained by the path if the order $n$ is at least $9$ and that the maximum weighted Szeged index of graphs of given order is attained by the balanced complete bipartite graphs.

Asymmetric list sizes in bipartite graphs
Published in Ann. Comb. 25, 913-933 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Given a bipartite graph with parts $A$ and $B$ having maximum degrees at most $Δ_A$ and $Δ_B$, respectively, consider a list assignment such that every vertex in $A$ or $B$ is given a list of colours of size $k_A$ or $k_B$, respectively. We prove some general sufficient conditions in terms of $Δ_A$, $Δ_B$, $k_A$, $k_B$ to be guaranteed a proper colouring such that each vertex is coloured using only a colour from its list. These are asymptotically nearly sharp in the very asymmetric cases. We establish one sufficient condition in particular, where $Δ_A=Δ_B=Δ$, $k_A=\log Δ$ and $k_B=(1+o(1))Δ/\logΔ$ as $Δ\to\infty$. This amounts to partial progress towards a conjecture from 1998 of Krivelevich and the first author. We also derive some necessary conditions through an intriguing connection between the complete case and the extremal size of approximate Steiner systems. We show that for complete bipartite graphs these conditions are asymptotically nearly sharp in a large part of the parameter space. This has provoked the following. In the setup above, we conjecture that a proper list colouring is always guaranteed * if $k_A \ge Δ_A^\varepsilon$ and $k_B \ge Δ_B^\varepsilon$ for any $\varepsilon>0$ provided $Δ_A$ and $Δ_B$ are large enough; * if $k_A \ge C \logΔ_B$ and $k_B \ge C \logΔ_A$ for some absolute constant $C>1$; or * if $Δ_A=Δ_B = Δ$ and $ k_B \ge C (Δ/\logΔ)^{1/k_A}\log Δ$ for some absolute constant $C>0$. These are asymmetric generalisations of the above-mentioned conjecture of Krivelevich and the first author, and if true are close to best possible. Our general sufficient conditions provide partial progress towards these conjectures.
Structure and colour in triangle-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a recent conjecture of the first author, we prove that every properly coloured triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains a rainbow independent set of size $\lceil\frac12χ\rceil$. This is sharp up to a factor $2$. This result and its short proof have implications for the related notion of chromatic discrepancy. Drawing inspiration from both structural and extremal graph theory, we conjecture that every triangle-free graph of chromatic number $χ$ contains an induced cycle of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$ as $χ\to\infty$. Even if one only demands an induced path of length $Ω(χ\logχ)$, the conclusion would be sharp up to a constant multiple. We prove it for regular girth $5$ graphs and for girth $21$ graphs. As a common strengthening of the induced paths form of this conjecture and of Johansson's theorem (1996), we posit the existence of some $c >0$ such that for every forest $H$ on $D$ vertices, every triangle-free and induced $H$-free graph has chromatic number at most $c D/\log D$. We prove this assertion with `triangle-free' replaced by `regular girth $5$'.
Regular Turán numbers and some Gan-Loh-Sudakov-type problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by a Gan-Loh-Sudakov-type problem, we introduce the regular Turán numbers, a natural variation on the classical Turán numbers for which the host graph is required to be regular. Among other results, we prove a striking supersaturation version of Mantel's theorem in the case of a regular host graph of odd order. We also characterise the graphs for which the regular Turán numbers behave classically or otherwise.

Extremal total distance of graphs of given radius
In 1984, Plesník determined the minimum total distance for given order and diameter and characterized the extremal graphs and digraphs. We prove the analog for given order and radius, when the order is sufficiently large compared to the radius. This confirms asymptotically a conjecture of Chen et al. We show the connection between minimizing the total distance and maximizing the size under the same conditions. We also prove some asymptotically optimal bounds for the maximum total distance.

An asymptotic resolution of a problem of Plesník
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fix $d \ge 3$. We show the existence of a constant $c>0$ such that any graph of diameter at most $d$ has average distance at most $d-c \frac{d^{3/2}}{\sqrt n}$, where $n$ is the number of vertices. Moreover, we exhibit graphs certifying sharpness of this bound up to the choice of $c$. This constitutes an asymptotic solution to a longstanding open problem of Plesník. Furthermore we solve the problem exactly for digraphs if the order is large compared with the diameter.

Punctured intervals tile $\mathbb Z^3$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending the methods of Metrebian (2018), we prove that any symmetric punctured interval tiles $\mathbb Z^3$. This solves two questions of Metrebian and completely resolves a question of Gruslys, Leader and Tan. We also pose a question that asks whether there is a relation between the genus $g$ (number of holes) in a one-dimensional tile $T$ and a uniform bound $d$ such that $T$ tiles $\mathbb{Z}^d$. An affirmative answer would generalize a conjecture of Gruslys, Leader and Tan (2016).

VC dimension and a union theorem for set systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Fix positive integers $k$ and $d$. We show that, as $n\to\infty$, any set system $\mathcal{A} \subset 2^{[n]}$ for which the VC dimension of $\{ \triangle_{i=1}^k S_i \mid S_i \in \mathcal{A}\}$ is at most $d$ has size at most $(2^{d\bmod{k}}+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor d/k\rfloor}$. Here $\triangle$ denotes the symmetric difference operator. This is a $k$-fold generalisation of a result of Dvir and Moran, and it settles one of their questions. A key insight is that, by a compression method, the problem is equivalent to an extremal set theoretic problem on $k$-wise intersection or union that was originally due to Erdős and Frankl. We also give an example of a family $\mathcal{A} \subset 2^{[n]}$ such that the VC dimension of $\mathcal{A}\cap \mathcal{A}$ and of $\mathcal{A}\cup \mathcal{A}$ are both at most $d$, while $\lvert \mathcal{A} \rvert = Ω(n^d)$. This provides a negative answer to another question of Dvir and Moran.

Maximum Wiener Indices of Unicyclic Graphs of Given Matching Number
In this article, we determine the maximum Wiener indices of unicyclic graphs with given number of vertices and matching number. We also characterize the extremal graphs. This solves an open problem of Du and Zhou.
A Sauer-Shelah-Perles Lemma for Lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study lattice-theoretical extensions of the celebrated Sauer-Shelah-Perles Lemma. We conjecture that a general Sauer-Shelah-Perlem Lemma holds for a lattice $L$ if and only if $L$ is relatively complemented, and prove partial results towards this conjecture.
