On a conjecture of DeLaViña and Waller
The Wiener index of a connected graph is defined as the sum of distances between all its unordered pairs of vertices. Characterising graphs on $n$ vertices with a fixed diameter that maximise the Wiener index is a long-standing open problem. This problem has been resolved fully for trees on $n$ vertices with diameter $d \in \{1,2,3,4,n-3,n-2,n-1\}$ while partial results are available for $d=5$ and $6$. In this context, a conjecture proposed by DeLaViña and Waller has remained open for the last 18 years.
In this paper, we establish a necessary condition for a tree to attain the maximum Wiener index among all trees on $n$ vertices with a given diameter. Using this condition, we characterise the maximal trees for diameter $n-4$ and $n-5$. Furthermore, we prove the DeLaViña Waller conjecture for the classes of graphs having $0,1,2,3$ or $n-4$ cut vertices.

The transmission of a vertex $v$ in a (chemical) graph $G$ is the sum of distances from $v$ to other vertices in $G$. If any two vertices of $G$ have different transmissions, then $G$ is transmission irregular. The Wiener index $W(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the sum of all distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in $G$, which has another formula as the half of the sum of transmissions of all vertices of $G$. In this paper, we consider the Wiener index maximization problem on the set of transmission irregular trees of a given order $n \in \mathbb{N}$. We solve the problem for all odd values of $n$ and for almost all even values of $n$. Each resolved extremal problem has a unique solution that is a chemical tree.
New results on the Wiener index of trees with a given diameter
We study the Wiener index of a class of trees with fixed diameter and order. A double broom is a tree such that there exist two vertices $u$ and $v$, such that each leaf of $T$ is adjacent to $u$ or $v$. We prove that for a tree $T$ of diameter $d$ and (sufficiently large) order $n$ such that $n\leq d-2+4 \left\lfloor \sqrt{ \frac{d-1}{2}} \right\rfloor$, $T$ has maximum Wiener index (in the class of trees of diameter $d$ and order $n$) if and only if $T$ is a balanced double broom. Our results are sharp up to a small constant.
On vertex peripherians and Wiener index of graphs with fixed number of cut vertices
The distance of a vertex in a graph is the sum of distances from that vertex to all other vertices of the graph. The Wiener index of a graph is the sum of distances between all its unordered pairs of vertices. A graph has been obtained that contains a vertex achieving the maximum distance among all graphs on $n$ vertices with fixed number of cut vertices. Further the graphs having maximum Wiener index among all graphs on $n$ vertices with at most $3$ cut vertices have been characterised.
Graphs with a given conditional diameter that maximize the Wiener index
The Wiener index $W(G)$ of a graph $G$ is one of the most well-known topological indices, which is defined as the sum of distances between all pairs of vertices of $G$. The diameter $D(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum distance between all pairs of vertices of $G$; the conditional diameter $D(G;s)$ is the maximum distance between all pairs of vertex subsets with cardinality $s$ of $G$. When $s=1$, the conditional diameter $D(G;s)$ is just the diameter $D(G)$. The authors in \cite{QS} characterized the graphs with the maximum Wiener index among all graphs with diameter $D(G)=n-c$, where $1\le c\le 4$. In this paper, we will characterize the graphs with the maximum Wiener index among all graphs with conditional diameter $D(G;s)=n-2s-c$ ( $-1\leq c\leq 1$), which extends partial results in \cite{QS}.
The maximum Wiener index of a uniform hypergraph
The Wiener index of a (hyper)graph is calculated by summing up the distances between all pairs of vertices. We determine the maximum possible Wiener index of a connected $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph and characterize for every~$n$ all hypergraphs attaining the maximum Wiener index.

The Wiener index of a strong digraph $D$ is defined as the sum of the distances between all ordered pairs of vertices. This definition has been extended to digraphs that are not necessarily strong by defining the distance from a vertex $a$ to a vertex $b$ as $0$ if there is no path from $a$ to $b$ in $D$.
Knor, uSkrekovski and Tepeh [Some remarks on Wiener index of oriented graphs. Appl.\ Math.\ Comput.\ {\bf 273}] considered orientations of graphs with maximum Wiener index. The authors conjectured that for a given tree $T$, an orientation $D$ of $T$ of maximum Wiener index always contains a vertex $v$ such that for every vertex $u$, there is either a $(u,v)$-path or a $(v,u)$-path in $D$. In this paper we disprove the conjecture.
We also show that the problem of finding an orientation of maximum Wiener index of a given graph is NP-complete, thus answering a question by Knor, uSkrekovski and Tepeh [Orientations of graphs with maximum Wiener index. Discrete Appl.\ Math.\ 211].
We briefly discuss the corresponding problem of finding an orientation of minimum Wiener index of a given graph, and show that the special case of deciding if a given graph on $m$ edges has an orientation of Wiener index $m$ can be solved in time quadratic in $n$.
On maximum Wiener index of directed grids

This paper is devoted to Wiener index of directed graphs, more precisely of directed grids. The grid $G_{m,n}$ is the Cartesian product $P_m\Box P_n$ of paths on $m$ and $n$ vertices, and in a particular case when $m=2$, it is a called the ladder graph $L_n$. Kraner Šumenjak et al. proved that the maximum Wiener index of a digraph, which is obtained by orienting the edges of $L_n$, is obtained when all layers isomorphic to one factor are directed paths directed in the same way except one (corresponding to an endvertex of the other factor) which is a directed path directed in the opposite way. Then they conjectured that the natural generalization of this orientation to $G_{m,n}$ will attain the maximum Wiener index among all orientations of $G_{m,n}$. In this paper we disprove the conjecture by showing that a comb-like orientation of $G_{m,n}$ has significiantly bigger Wiener index.

The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of the distances between all pairs of vertices in the graph. It was conjectured that the Wiener index of an $n$-vertex maximal planar graph is at most $\lfloor\frac{1}{18}(n^3+3n^2)\rfloor$. We prove this conjecture and for every $n$, $n \geq 10$, determine the unique $n$-vertex maximal planar graph for which this maximum is attained.

Let $G$ be a a connected graph. The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices. We provide asymptotic formulae for the maximum Wiener index of simple triangulations and quadrangulations with given connectivity, as the order increases, and make conjectures for the extremal triangulations and quadrangulations based on computational evidence. If $\overlineσ(v)$ denotes the arithmetic mean of the distances from $v$ to all other vertices of $G$, then the remoteness of $G$ is defined as the largest value of $\overlineσ(v)$ over all vertices $v$ of $G$. We give sharp upper bounds on the remoteness of simple triangulations and quadrangulations of given order and connectivity.
Graphs with the second and third maximum Wiener index over the 2-vertex connected graphs
Wiener index, defined as the sum of distances between all unordered pairs of vertices, is one of the most popular molecular descriptors. It is well known that among 2-vertex connected graphs on $n\ge 3$ vertices, the cycle $C_n$ attains the maximum value of Wiener index. We show that the second maximum graph is obtained from $C_n$ by introducing a new edge that connects two vertices at distance two on the cycle if $n\ne 6$. If $n\ge 11$, the third maximum graph is obtained from a $4$-cycle by connecting opposite vertices by a path of length $n-3$. We completely describe also the situation for $n\le 10$.
The structure of graphs with given number of blocks and the maximum Wiener index
The Wiener index (the distance) of a connected graph is the sum of distances between all pairs of vertices. In this paper, we study the maximum possible value of this invariant among graphs on $n$ vertices with fixed number of blocks $p$. It is known that among graphs on $n$ vertices that have just one block, the $n$-cycle has the largest Wiener index. And the $n$-path, which has $n-1$ blocks, has the maximum Wiener index in the class of graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that among all graphs on $n$ vertices which have $p\ge 2$ blocks, the maximum Wiener index is attained by a graph composed of two cycles joined by a path (here we admit that one or both cycles can be replaced by a single edge, as in the case $p=n-1$ for example).
Maximum Wiener index of unicyclic graphs with given bipartition
The \emph{Wiener index} is a widely studied topological index of graphs. One of the main problems in the area is to determine which graphs of given properties attain the extremal values of Wiener index.
In this paper we resolve an open problem posed by Du in 2012. To this end we determine the unicyclic bipartite graphs with given size of parts having the maximum Wiener index. This completes the previous research in which the minimum case was solved.
Maximum Wiener Indices of Unicyclic Graphs of Given Matching Number
In this article, we determine the maximum Wiener indices of unicyclic graphs with given number of vertices and matching number. We also characterize the extremal graphs. This solves an open problem of Du and Zhou.
The Maximum Wiener Index of Trees with Given Degree Sequences
The Wiener index of a connected graph is the sum of topological distances between all pairs of vertices. Since Wang gave a mistake result on the maximum Wiener index for given tree degree sequence, in this paper, we investigate the maximum Wiener index of trees with given degree sequences and extremal trees which attain the maximum value.
