Bell Polynomials and $k$-generalized Dyck Paths

A {\em k-generalized Dyck path} of length $n$ is a lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(n,0)$ in the plane integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ consisting of horizontal-steps $(k, 0)$ for a given integer $k\geq 0$, up-steps $(1,1)$, and down-steps $(1,-1)$, which never passes below the x-axis. The present paper studies three kinds of statistics on $k$-generalized Dyck paths: "number of $u$-segments", "number of internal $u$-segments" and "number of $(u,h)$-segments". The Lagrange inversion formula is used to represent the generating function for the number of $k$-generalized Dyck paths according to the statistics as a sum of the partial Bell polynomials or the potential polynomials. Many important special cases are considered leading to several surprising observations. Moreover, enumeration results related to $u$-segments and $(u,h)$-segments are also established, which produce many new combinatorial identities, and specially, two new expressions for Catalan numbers.

In this paper we enumerate the number of ways of selecting $k$ objects from $n$ objects arrayed in a line such that no two selected ones are separated by $m-1,2m-1,...,pm-1$ objects and provide three different formulas when $m,p\geq 1$ and $n\geq pm(k-1)$. Also, we prove that the number of ways of selecting $k$ objects from $n$ objects arrayed in a circle such that no two selected ones are separated by $m-1,2m-1,...,pm-1$ objects is given by $\frac{n}{n-pk}\binom{n-pk}{k}$, where $m,p\geq 1$ and $n\geq mpk+1$.

We first establish the result that the Narayana polynomials can be represented as the integrals of the Legendre polynomials. Then we represent the Catalan numbers in terms of the Narayana polynomials by three different identities. We give three different proofs for these identities, namely, two algebraic proofs and one combinatorial proof. Some applications are also given which lead to many known and new identities.

We characterize separable multidimensional permutations in terms of forbidden patterns and enumerate them by means of generating function, recursive formula and explicit formula. We find a connection between multidimensional permutations and guillotine partitions of a box. In particular, a bijection between $d$-dimensional permutations and guillotine partitions of a $2^{d-1}$-dimensional box is constructed. We also study enumerating problems related to guillotine partitions under certain restrictions revealing connections to other combinatorial structures. This allows us to obtain results on avoided patterns in permutations.
Partial transpose of permutation matrices
The partial transpose of a block matrix M is the matrix obtained by transposing the blocks of M independently. We approach the notion of partial transpose from a combinatorial point of view. In this perspective, we solve some basic enumeration problems concerning the partial transpose of permutation matrices. More specifically, we count the number of permutations matrices which are equal to their partial transpose and the number of permutation matrices whose partial transpose is still a permutation. We solve these problems also when restricted to symmetric permutation matrices only.
A comment on Ryser's conjecture for intersecting hypergraphs

Let $τ(\mathcal{H})$ be the cover number and $ν(\mathcal{H})$ be the matching number of a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$. Ryser conjectured that every $r$-partite hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ satisfies the inequality $τ(\mathcal{H}) \leq (r-1) ν(\mathcal{H})$. This conjecture is open for all $r \ge 4$. For intersecting hypergraphs, namely those with $ν(\mathcal{H})=1$, Ryser's conjecture reduces to $τ(\mathcal{H}) \leq r-1$. Even this conjecture is extremely difficult and is open for all $ r \ge 6$. For infinitely many $r$ there are examples of intersecting $r$-partite hypergraphs with $τ(\mathcal{H})=r-1$, demonstrating the tightness of the conjecture for such $r$. However, all previously known constructions are not optimal as they use far too many edges. How sparse can an intersecting $r$-partite hypergraph be, given that its cover number is as large as possible, namely $τ(\mathcal{H}) \ge r-1$? In this paper we solve this question for $r \le 5$, give an almost optimal construction for $r=6$, prove that any $r$-partite intersecting hypergraph with $τ(H) \ge r-1$ must have at least $(3-\frac{1}{\sqrt{18}})r(1-o(1)) \approx 2.764r(1-o(1))$ edges, and conjecture that there exist constructions with $Θ(r)$ edges.
Counting descent pairs with prescribed colors in the colored permutation groups
We define new statistics, (c, d)-descents, on the colored permutation groups Z_r \wr S_n and compute the distribution of these statistics on the elements in these groups. We use some combinatorial approaches, recurrences, and generating functions manipulations to obtain our results.

We complete the Wilf classification of signed patterns of length 5 for both signed permutations and signed involutions. New general equivalences of patterns are given which prove Jaggard's conjectures concerning involutions in the symmetric group avoiding certain patterns of length 5 and 6. In this way, we also complete the Wilf classification of S_5, S_6, and S_7 for both permutations and involutions.
Excedance numbers for permutations in complex reflection groups
Recently, Bagno, Garber and Mansour studied a kind of excedance number on the complex reflection groups and computed its multidistribution with the number of fixed points on the set of involutions in these groups. In this note, we consider the similar problems in more general cases and make a correction of one result obtained by them.

The generating function and an explicit expression is derived for the (colored) Motzkin numbers of higher rank introduced recently. Considering the special case of rank one yields the corresponding results for the conventional colored Motzkin numbers for which in addition a recursion relation is given.
Combinatorial Gray codes for classes of pattern avoiding permutations

The past decade has seen a flurry of research into pattern avoiding permutations but little of it is concerned with their exhaustive generation. Many applications call for exhaustive generation of permutations subject to various constraints or imposing a particular generating order. In this paper we present generating algorithms and combinatorial Gray codes for several families of pattern avoiding permutations. Among the families under consideration are those counted by Catalan, Schröder, Pell, even index Fibonacci numbers and the central binomial coefficients. Consequently, this provides Gray codes for $\s_n(τ)$ for all $τ\in \s_3$ and the obtained Gray codes have distances 4 and 5.
On pattern-avoiding partitions
A \emph{set partition} of the set $[n]=\{1,...c,n\}$ is a collection of disjoint blocks $B_1,B_2,...c, B_d$ whose union is $[n]$. We choose the ordering of the blocks so that they satisfy $\min B_1<\min B_2<...b<\min B_d$. We represent such a set partition by a \emph{canonical sequence} $π_1,π_2,...c,π_n$, with $π_i=j$ if $i\in B_j$. We say that a partition $π$ \emph{contains} a partition $σ$ if the canonical sequence of $π$ contains a subsequence that is order-isomorphic to the canonical sequence of $σ$. Two partitions $σ$ and $σ'$ are \emph{equivalent}, if there is a size-preserving bijection between $σ$-avoiding and $σ'$-avoiding partitions.
We determine several infinite families of sets of equivalent patterns; for instance, we prove that there is a bijection between $k$-noncrossing and $k$-nonnesting partitions, with a notion of crossing and nesting based on the canonical sequence. We also provide new combinatorial interpretations of the Catalan numbers and the Stirling numbers. Using a systematic computer search, we verify that our results characterize all the pairs of equivalent partitions of size at most seven.
We also present a correspondence between set partitions and fillings of Ferrers shapes and stack polyominoes. This correspondence allows us to apply recent results on polyomino fillings in the study of partitions, and conversely, some of our results on partitions imply new results on polyomino fillings and ordered graphs.

The excedance number for S_n is known to have an Eulerian distribution. Nevertheless, the classical proof uses descents rather than excedances. We present a direct recursive proof which seems to be folklore and extend it to the colored permutation groups G_r,n. The generalized recursion yields some interesting connection to Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also show some logconcavity result concerning a variant of the excedance number. Finally, we show that the generating function of the excedance number defined on G_r,n is symmetric.

We introduce a notion of Dyck paths with coloured ascents. For several ways of colouring, we establish bijections between sets of such paths and other combinatorial structures, such as non-crossing trees, dissections of a convex polygon, etc. In some cases enumeration gives new expression for sequences enumerating these structures.

Recently, Kitaev and Remmel [Classifying descents according to parity, Annals of Combinatorics, to appear 2007] refined the well-known permutation statistic ``descent'' by fixing parity of one of the descent's numbers. Results in that paper were extended and generalized in several ways. In this paper, we shall fix a set partition of the natural numbers $N$, $(N_1, ..., N_t)$, and we study the distribution of descents, levels, and rises according to whether the first letter of the descent, rise, or level lies in $N_i$ over the set of words over the alphabet $[k]$. In particular, we refine and generalize some of the results in [Counting occurrences of some subword patterns, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science 6 (2003), 001-012.].
Excedance number for involutions in complex reflection groups
We define the excedance number on the complex reflection groups and compute its multidistribution with the number of fixed points on the set of involutions in these groups. We use some recurrence formulas and generating functions manipulations to obtain our results.

We complete the enumeration of Dumont permutations of the second kind avoiding a pattern of length 4 which is itself a Dumont permutation of the second kind. We also consider some combinatorial statistics on Dumont permutations avoiding certain patterns of length 3 and 4 and give a natural bijection between 3142-avoiding Dumont permutations of the second kind and noncrossing partitions that uses cycle decomposition, as well as bijections between 132-, 231- and 321-avoiding Dumont permutations and Dyck paths. Finally, we enumerate Dumont permutations of the first kind simultaneously avoiding certain pairs of 4-letter patterns and another pattern of arbitrary length.

We say that a permutation $π$ is a Motzkin permutation if it avoids 132 and there do not exist $a<b$ such that $π_a<π_b<π_{b+1}$. We study the distribution of several statistics in Motzkin permutations, including the length of the longest increasing and decreasing subsequences and the number of rises and descents. We also enumerate Motzkin permutations with additional restrictions, and study the distribution of occurrences of fairly general patterns in this class of permutations.
Partially ordered patterns and compositions
A partially ordered (generalized) pattern (POP) is a generalized pattern some of whose letters are incomparable, an extension of generalized permutation patterns introduced by Babson and Steingrimsson. POPs were introduced in the symmetric group by Kitaev [Partially ordered generalized patterns, Discrete Math. 298 (2005), 212-229; Introduction to partially ordered patterns, Discrete Appl. Math., to appear], and studied in the set of $k$-ary words by Kitaev and Mansour [Partially ordered generalized patterns and $k$-ary words, Annals of Combinatorics 7 (2003) 191-200]. Moreover, Kitaev et al. [S. Kitaev, T. McAllister and K. Petersen, Enumerating segmented patterns in compositions and encoding with restricted permutations, preprint] introduced segmented POPs in compositions. In this paper, we study avoidance of POPs in compositions and generalize results for avoidance of POPs in permutations and words. Specifically, we obtain results for the generating functions for the number of compositions that avoid shuffle patterns and multi-patterns. In addition, we give the generating function for the distribution of the maximum number of non-overlapping occurrences of a segmented POP $τ$ (that is allowed to have repeated letters) among the compositions of $n$ with $m$ parts in a given set, provided we know the generating function for the number of compositions of $n$ with $m$ parts in the given set that avoid $τ$. This result is a $q$-analogue of the main result in [S. Kitaev, T. Mansour, Partially ordered generalized patterns and $k$-ary words, Annals of Combinatorics 7 (2003) 191-200].
Noncrossing normal ordering for functions of boson operators

Normally ordered forms of functions of boson operators are important in many contexts in particular concerning Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Optics. Beginning with the seminal work of Katriel [Lett. Nuovo Cimento, 10(13):565--567, 1974], in the last few years, normally ordered forms have been shown to have a rich combinatorial structure, mainly in virtue of a link with the theory of partitions. In this paper, we attempt to enrich this link. By considering linear representations of noncrossing partitions, we define the notion of noncrossing normal ordering. Given the growing interest in noncrossing partitions, because of their many unexpected connections (like, for example, with free probability), noncrossing normal ordering appears to be an intriguing notion. We explicitly give the noncrossing normally ordered form of the functions (a^{r}(a^†)^{s})^{n}) and (a^{r}+(a^†)^{s})^{n}, plus various special cases. We are able to establish for the first time bijections between noncrossing contractions of these functions, k-ary trees and sets of lattice paths.
