Almost all graphs have no cospectral mate with fixed level
Haemers conjectures that almost all graphs are determined by their spectra. Suppose $G \sim \mathcal{G}(n, p)$ is a random graph with each edge chosen independently with probability $p$ with $0 < p < 1$. Then $$\Pr(G \text{ is not controllable}) + \sum_{\ell = 2}^{n^{n^2}} \Pr(G \text{ has a generalized copsectral mate with level } \ell) \to 0$$ as $n \to \infty$ implies that almost all graphs are determined by their generalized spectra. It is known that almost all graphs are controllable. We show that almost all graphs have no cospectral mate with fixed level $\ell$, namely $$\Pr(G \text{ has a copsectral mate with level } \ell) \to 0$$ as $n \to \infty$ for every $\ell \geq 2$. Consequently, $$\Pr(G \text{ has a generalized copsectral mate with level } \ell) \to 0$$ as $n \to \infty$ for every $\ell \geq 2$. The result can also be interpreted in the framework of random integral matrices.
Degree-similar graphs and cospectral graphs
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and degree matrix $D(G)$, and let $L_μ(G):=A(G)-μD(G)$. Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ are called \emph{degree-similar} if there exists an invertible matrix $M$ such that $M^{-1} A(G_1) M =A(G_2)$ and $M^{-1} D(G_1) M =D(G_2)$. In this paper, we address three problems concerning degree-similar graphs proposed by Godsil and Sun. First, we present a new characterization of degree-similar graphs using degree partition, from which we derive methods and examples for constructing cospectral graphs and degree-similar graphs. Second, we construct infinite pairs of non-degree-similar trees $G_1$ and $G_2$ such that $tI- L_μ(G_1)$ and $tI-L_μ(G_2)$ have the same Smith normal form over $\Q(μ)[t]$, which provides a negative answer to a problem posed by Godsil and Sun. Third, we establish several invariants of degree-similar graphs and obtain results on unicyclic graphs that are degree-similar determined. Lastly we prove that for a strongly regular graph $G$ and any two edges $e$ and $f$ of $G$, $G \backslash e$ and $G \backslash f$ have identical $μ$-polynomial, i.e., $\det(tI-L_μ(G \backslash e))=\det(tI-L_μ(G \backslash f))$, which enables the construction of pairs of non-isomorphic graphs with same $μ$-polynomial, where $G \backslash e$ denotes the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting the edge $e$.
Almost all cographs have a cospectral mate
Complement-reducible graphs (or cographs) are the graphs formed from the single-vertex graph by the operations of complement and disjoint union. By combining the Johnson-Newman theorem on generalized cospectrality with the standard tools in the asymptotic enumeration of trees, we show that almost all cographs have a cospectral mate. This result can be viewed as an analogue to a well-known result by Schwenk, who proved that almost all trees have a cospectral mate.
Generalized spectral characterization of signed bipartite graphs
Let $Σ$ be an $n$-vertex controllable or almost controllable signed bipartite graph, and let $Δ_Σ$ denote the discriminant of its characteristic polynomial $χ(Σ; x)$. We prove that if (\rmnum{1}) the integer $2^{ -\lfloor n/2 \rfloor }\sqrt{Δ_Σ}$ is squarefree, and (\rmnum{2}) the constant term (even $n$) or linear coefficient (odd $n$) of $χ(Σ; x)$ is $\pm 1$, then $Σ$ is determined by its generalized spectrum. This result extends a recent theorem of Ji, Wang, and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 32 (2025), \#P2.18], which established a similar criterion for signed trees with irreducible characteristic polynomials.
An Upper Bound on the Number of Generalized Cospectral Mates of Oriented Graphs
This paper examines the spectral characterizations of oriented graphs. Let $Σ$ be an $n$-vertex oriented graph with skew-adjacency matrix $S$. Previous research mainly focused on self-converse oriented graphs, proposing arithmetic conditions for these graphs to be uniquely determined by their generalized skew-spectrum ($\mathrm{DGSS}$). However, self-converse graphs are extremely rare; this paper considers a more general class of oriented graphs $\mathcal{G}_{n}$ (not limited to self-converse graphs), consisting of all $n$-vertex oriented graphs $Σ$ such that $2^{-\left \lfloor \frac{n}{2} \right \rfloor }\det W(Σ)$ is an odd and square-free integer, where $W(Σ)=[e,Se,\dots,S^{n-1}e]$ ($e$ is the all-one vector) is the skew-walk matrix of $Σ$. Given that $Σ$ is cospectral with its converse $Σ^{\rm T}$, there always exists a unique regular rational orthogonal $Q_0$ such that $Q_0^{\rm T}SQ_0=-S$. This study reveals that there exists a deep relationship between the level $\ell_0$ of $Q_0$ and the number of generalized cospectral mates of $Σ$. More precisely, we show, among others, that the maximum number of generalized cospectral mates of $Σ\in\mathcal{G}_{n}$ is at most $2^{t}-1$, where $t$ is the number of prime factors of $\ell_0$. Moreover, some numerical examples are also provided to demonstrate that the above upper bound is attainable. Finally, we also provide a criterion for the oriented graphs $Σ\in\mathcal{G}_{n}$ to be weakly determined by the generalized skew-spectrum ($\mathrm{WDGSS})$.
Primary decomposition theorem and generalized spectral characterization of graphs
Suppose $G$ is a controllable graph of order $n$ with adjacency matrix $A$. Let $W=[e,Ae,\ldots,A^{n-1}e]$ ($e$ is the all-one vector) and $Δ=\prod_{i>j}(α_i-α_j)^2$ ($α_i$'s are eigenvalues of $A$) be the walk matrix and the discriminant of $G$, respectively. Wang and Yu \cite{wangyu2016} showed that if
$$θ(G):=\gcd\{2^{-\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}\det W,Δ\} $$
is odd and squarefree, then $G$ is determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS). Using the primary decomposition theorem, we obtain a new criterion for a graph $G$ to be DGS without the squarefreeness assumption on $θ(G)$. Examples are further given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed criterion, compared with the two existing methods to deal with the difficulty of non-squarefreeness.
On the determinant of the walk matrix of the rooted product with a path
For an $n$-vertex graph $G$, the walk matrix of $G$, denoted by $W(G)$, is the matrix $[e,A(G)e,\ldots,(A(G))^{n-1}e]$, where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and $e$ is the all-ones vector. For two integers $m$ and $\ell$ with $1\le \ell\le (m+1)/2$, let $G\circ P_m^{(\ell)}$ be the rooted product of $G$ and the path $P_m$ taking the $\ell$-th vertex of $P_m$ as the root, i.e., $G\circ P_m^{(\ell)}$ is a graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of the path $P_m$ by identifying the $i$-th vertex of $G$ with the $\ell$-th vertex (the root vertex) of the $i$-th copy of $P_m$ for each $i$. We prove that, $\det W(G\circ P_m^{(\ell)})$ equals $\pm (\det A(G))^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W(G))^m$ if $\gcd(\ell,m+1)=1$, and equals 0 otherwise. This extends a recent result established in [Wang et al. Linear Multilinear Algebra 72 (2024): 828--840] which corresponds to the special case $\ell=1$. As a direct application, we prove that if $G$ satisfies $\det A(G)=\pm 1$ and $\det W(G)=\pm 2^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, then for any sequence of integer pairs $(m_i,\ell_i)$ with $\gcd(\ell_i,m_i+1)=1$ for each $i$, all the graphs in the family \begin{equation*}
G\circ P_{m_1}^{(\ell_1)}, (G\circ P_{m_1}^{(\ell_1)})\circ P_{m_2}^{(\ell_2)}, ((G\circ P_{m_1}^{(\ell_1)})\circ P_{m_2}^{(\ell_2)})\circ P_{m_3}^{(\ell_3)},\ldots \end{equation*} are determined by their generalized spectrum.

We provide a criterion to distinguish two graphs which are indistinguishable by $2$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Lehman algorithm for almost all graphs. Haemers conjectured that almost all graphs are identified by their spectrum. Our approach suggests that almost all graphs are identified by their generalized block Laplacian spectrum.
New arithmetic invariants for cospectral graphs
An invariant for cospectral graphs is a property shared by all cospectral graphs. In this paper, we establish three novel arithmetic invariants for cospectral graphs, revealing deep connections between spectral properties and combinatorial structures. More precisely, one of our main results shows that for any two cospectral graphs $G$ and $H$ with adjacency matrices $A(G)$ and $A(H)$, respectively, the following congruence holds for all integers $m\geq 0$:\[e^{\rm T}A(G)^me\equiv e^{\rm T}A(H)^me \pmod{4},\] where $e$ is the all-one vector. Moreover, we present a number of fascinating applications. Specifically: i) Resolving a conjecture proposed by the third author, we demonstrate that under certain conditions, every graph cospectral with a graph $G$ is determined by its generalized spectrum. ii) We demonstrate that whenever the complements of two trees are cospectral, then one tree has a perfect matching if and only if the other does. An analogous result holds for the existence of triangles in general graphs. iii) An unexpected connection to the polynomial reconstruction problem is also provided, showing that the parity of the constant term of the characteristic polynomial is reconstructible.
On a conjecture of Nikiforov concerning the minimal $p$-energy of connected graphs
For a given simple graph \( G \), the \( p \)-energy of \( G \), denoted by \( \mathcal{E}_p(G) \), is defined as the sum of the \( p \)-th power of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Let \( S_n \) denote the star graph with one internal node and \( n-1 \) leaves. Nikiforov conjectured that for \( 1 < p < 2 \), the connected graph of order \( n \) with the smallest \( p \)-energy is \( S_n \). Recently, this conjecture was proved for bipartite graphs. In this paper, by employing a Coulson-Jacobs-type formula and certain spectral radius results for connected graphs, we completely resolve this conjecture. Furthermore, we establish that the equality condition in the inequality \( \mathcal{E}_p(G) \geq \mathcal{E}_p(S_n) \) holds if and only if \( G \) is \( S_n \).
The Generation of All Regular Rational Orthogonal Matrices
A \emph{rational orthogonal matrix} $Q$ is an orthogonal matrix with rational entries, and $Q$ is called \emph{regular} if each of its row sum equals one, i.e., $Qe = e$ where $e$ is the all-one vector. This paper presents a method for generating all regular rational orthogonal matrices using the classic Cayley transformation. Specifically, we demonstrate that for any regular rational orthogonal matrix $Q$, there exists a permutation matrix $P$ such that $QP$ does not possess an eigenvalue of $-1$. Consequently, $Q$ can be expressed in the form $Q = (I_n + S)^{-1}(I_n - S)P$, where $I_n$ is the identity matrix of order $n$, $S$ is a rational skew-symmetric matrix satisfying $Se = 0$, and $P$ is a permutation matrix. Central to our approach is a pivotal intermediate result, which holds independent interest: given a square matrix $M$, then $MP$ has $-1$ as an eigenvalue for every permutation matrix $P$ if and only if either every row sum of $M$ is $-1$ or every column sum of $M$ is $-1$.
A new criterion for oriented graphs to be determined by their generalized skew spectrum
Spectral characterizations of graphs is an important topic in spectral graph theory which has been studied extensively by researchers in recent years. The study of oriented graphs, however, has received less attention so far. In Qiu et al.~\cite{QWW} (Linear Algebra Appl. 622 (2021) 316-332), the authors gave an arithmetic criterion for an oriented graph to be determined by its \emph{generalized skew spectrum} (DGSS for short). More precisely, let $Σ$ be an $n$-vertex oriented graph with skew adjacency matrix $S$ and $W(Σ)=[e,Se,\ldots,S^{n-1}e]$ be the \emph{walk-matrix} of $Σ$, where $e$ is the all-one vector. A theorem of Qiu et al.~\cite{QWW} shows that a self-converse oriented graph $Σ$ is DGSS, provided that the Smith normal form of $W(Σ)$ is ${\rm diag}(1,\ldots,1,2,\ldots,2,2d)$, where $d$ is an odd and square-free integer and the number of $1$'s appeared in the diagonal is precisely $\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil$. In this paper, we show that the above square-freeness assumptions on $d$ can actually be removed, which significantly improves upon the above theorem. Our new ingredient is a key intermediate result, which is of independent interest: for a self-converse oriented graphs $Σ$ and an odd prime $p$, if the rank of $W(Σ)$ is $n-1$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$, then the kernel of $W(Σ)^{\rm T}$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ is \emph{anisotropic}, i.e., $v^{\rm T}v\neq 0$ for any $0\ne v\in{{\rm ker}\,W(Σ)^{\rm T}}$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$.
On the Positive and Negative $p$-Energies of Graphs under Edge Addition
In this paper, we introduce the concepts of positive and negative $p$-energies of graphs and investigate their behavior under edge addition. Specifically, we generalize the classical notions of positive and negative square energies to the $p$-energy setting, denoted by $\mathcal{E}_p^{+}(G)$ and $\mathcal{E}_p^{-}(G)$, respectively. We establish improved lower bounds for these quantities under edge addition, which sharpen existing results by Abiad et al.\ in the case $p=2$. Furthermore, we address the monotonicity problem for $\mathcal{E}_p^{+}(G)$ under edge addition, and construct a family of counterexamples showing that monotonicity fails for $1 \leq p < 3$. Finally, we conclude with several open problems for further investigation.
Annihilating polynomial, Jordan canonical from, and generalized spectral characterizations of Eulerian graphs
Let $G$ be an Eulerian graph on $n$ vertices with adjacency matrix $A$ and characteristic polynomial $φ(x)$. We show that when $n$ is even (resp. odd), the square-root of $φ(x)$ (resp. $xφ(x)$) is an annihilating polynomial of $A$, over $\mathbb{F}_2$. The result was achieved by applying the Jordan canonical form of $A$ over the algebraic closure $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_2$. Based on this, we show a family of Eulerian graphs are determined by their generalized spectrum among all Eulerian graphs, which significantly simplifies and strengthens the previous result.
A characterization of generalized cospectrality of rooted graphs with applications in graph reconstruction
Extending a classic result of Johnson and Newman, this paper provides a matrix characterization for two generalized cospectral graphs with a pair of generalized cospectral vertex-deleted subgraphs. As an application, we present a new condition for the reconstructibility of a graph. In particular, we show that a graph with at least three vertices is reconstructible if there exists a vertex-deleted subgraph that is almost controllable and has a nontrivial automorphism.
Generalized spectral characterization of signed trees
Let $T$ be a tree with an irreducible characteristic polynomial $φ(x)$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $Δ(T)$ be the discriminant of $φ(x)$. It is proved that if $2^{-\frac n2}\sqrt{Δ(T)}$ (which is always an integer) is odd and square free, then every signed tree with underlying graph $T$ is determined by its generalized spectrum.

Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph and $Q(G)$ be its signless Laplacian matrix. The $Q$-walk matrix of $G$, denoted by $W_Q(G)$, is $[e,Q(G)e,\ldots,Q^{n-1}(G)e]$, where $e$ is the all-one vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of the path $P_m$ by identifying the $i$-th vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of the $i$-th copy of $P_m$ for each $i$. We prove that, $$\det W_Q(G\circ P_m)=\pm (\det Q(G))^{m-1}(\det W_Q(G))^m$$ holds for any $m\ge 2$. This gives a signless Laplacian counterpart of the following recently established identity [17]: $$\det W_A(G\circ P_m)=\pm (\det A(G))^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W_A(G))^m,$$ where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and $W_A(G)=[e,A(G)e,\ldots,A^{n-1}(G)e]$. We also propose a conjecture to unify the above two equalities.

Let $W(D_n)$ denote the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$. We prove that the Smith normal form of $W(D_n)$ is $$\textup{diag}[\underbrace{1,1,\ldots,1}_{\frac{n}{2}-1},\underbrace{2,2,\ldots,2}_{\frac{n}{2}-1},0,0]$$ when $n\equiv 0\pmod{4}$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question in [W. Wang, C. Wang, S. Guo, On the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$, Linear Algebra Appl. 653 (2022) 193--206].

The walk matrix of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$, denoted by $W(G)$, is $[e,Ae,\ldots,A^{n-1}e]$, where $e$ is the all-ones vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the rooted product of $G$ and a rooted path $P_m$ (taking an endvertex as the root), i.e., $G\circ P_m$ is a graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of $P_m$ by identifying each vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of a copy of $P_m$. Mao-Liu-Wang (2015) and Mao-Wang (2022) proved that, for $m=2$ and $m\in\{3,4\}$, respectively$$\det W(G\circ P_m)=\pm a_0^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W(G))^m,$$ where $a_0$ is the constant term of the characteristic polynomial of $G$. Furthermore, Mao-Wang (2022) conjectured that the formula holds for any $m\ge 2$. In this note, we verify this conjecture using the technique of Chebyshev polynomials.
