Strongly sublinear separators and polynomial expansion
A result of Plotkin, Rao, and Smith implies that graphs with polynomial expansion have strongly sublinear separators. We prove a converse of this result showing that hereditary classes of graphs with strongly sublinear separators have polynomial expansion. This confirms a conjecture of the first author.

Density of 5/2-critical graphs
A graph G is 5/2-critical if G has no circular 5/2-coloring (or equivalently, homomorphism to C_5), but every proper subgraph of G has one. We prove that every 5/2-critical graph on n>=4 vertices has at least (5n-2)/4 edges, and list all 5/2-critical graphs achieving this bound. This implies that every planar or projective-planar graph of girth at least 10 is 5/2-colorable.

A structure theorem for strong immersions
A graph H is strongly immersed in G if H is obtained from G by a sequence of vertex splittings (i.e., lifting some pairs of incident edges and removing the vertex) and edge removals. Equivalently, vertices of H are mapped to distinct vertices of G (branch vertices) and edges of H are mapped to pairwise edge-disjoint paths in G, each of them joining the branch vertices corresponding to the ends of the edge and not containing any other branch vertices. We describe the structure of graphs avoiding a fixed graph as a strong immersion.

Treewidth of graphs with balanced separations
We prove that if every subgraph of a graph $G$ has a balanced separation of order at most $a$ then $G$ has treewidth at most $15a$. This establishes a linear dependence between the treewidth and the separation number.

Crossing numbers of periodic graphs
A graph is periodic if it can be obtained by joining identical pieces in a cyclic fashion. It is shown that the limit crossing number of a periodic graph is computable. This answers a question of Benny Pinontoan and Bruce Richter (2004).

Sublinear separators, fragility and subexponential expansion
Let G be a subgraph-closed graph class with bounded maximum degree. We show that if G has balanced separators whose size is smaller than linear by a polynomial factor, then G has subexponential expansion. This gives a partial converse to a result of Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez. As an intermediate step, the proof uses a new kind of graph decompositions.

Three-coloring triangle-free graphs on surfaces IV. Bounding face sizes of 4-critical graphs
Let G be a 4-critical graph with t triangles, embedded in a surface of genus g. Let c be the number of 4-cycles in G that do not bound a 2-cell face. We prove that the sum of lengths of (>=5)-faces of G is at most linear in g+t+c-1.
Fractional coloring of triangle-free planar graphs
We prove that every planar triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices has fractional chromatic number at most $3-\frac{1}{n+1/3}$.

Three-coloring triangle-free graphs on surfaces III. Graphs of girth five
We show that the size of a 4-critical graph of girth at least five is bounded by a linear function of its genus. This strengthens the previous bound on the size of such graphs given by Thomassen. It also serves as the basic case for the description of the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embedded in a fixed surface, presented in a future paper of this series.

List-coloring apex-minor-free graphs
A graph H is t-apex if H-X is planar for some subset X of V(H) of size t. For any integer t>=0 and a fixed t-apex graph H, we give a polynomial-time algorithm to decide whether a (t+3)-connected H-minor-free graph is colorable from a given assignment of lists of size t+4. The connectivity requirement is the best possible in the sense that for every t>=1, there exists a t-apex graph H such that testing (t+4)-colorability of (t+2)-connected H-minor-free graphs is NP-complete. Similarly, the size of the lists cannot be decreased (unless P=NP), since for every t>=1, testing (t+3)-list-colorability of (t+3)-connected K_{t+4}-minor-free graphs is NP-complete.

A simplified discharging proof of Grötzsch theorem
In this note, we combine ideas of several previous proofs in order to obtain a quite short proof of Grötzsch theorem.

Large Independent Sets in Triangle-Free Planar Graphs
Every triangle-free planar graph on n vertices has an independent set of size at least (n+1)/3, and this lower bound is tight. We give an algorithm that, given a triangle-free planar graph G on n vertices and an integer k>=0, decides whether G has an independent set of size at least (n+k)/3, in time 2^{O(sqrt{k})}n. Thus, the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by k. Furthermore, as a corollary of the result used to prove the correctness of the algorithm, we show that there exists epsilon>0 such that every planar graph of girth at least five on n vertices has an independent set of size at least n/(3-epsilon).
Immersion in four-edge-connected graphs

Fix g>1. Every graph of large enough tree-width contains a g x g grid as a minor; but here we prove that every four-edge-connected graph of large enough tree-width contains a g x g grid as an immersion (and hence contains any fixed graph with maximum degree at most four as an immersion). This result has a number of applications.
Planar 4-critical graphs with four triangles

By the Grunbaum-Aksenov Theorem (extending Grotzsch's Theorem) every planar graph with at most three triangles is 3-colorable. However, there are infinitely many planar 4-critical graphs with exactly four triangles. We describe all such graphs. This answers a question of Erdos from 1990.

4-critical graphs on surfaces without contractible (<=4)-cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if G is a 4-critical graph embedded in a fixed surface $Σ$ so that every contractible cycle has length at least 5, then G can be expressed as $G=G'\cup G_1\cup G_2\cup ... \cup G_k$, where $|V(G')|$ and $k$ are bounded by a constant (depending linearly on the genus of $Σ$) and $G_1\ldots,G_k$ are graphs (of unbounded size) whose structure we describe exactly. The proof is computer-assisted - we use computer to enumerate all plane 4-critical graphs of girth 5 with a precolored cycle of length at most 16, that are used in the basic case of the inductive proof of the statement.

Let G be a planar triangle-free graph and let C be a cycle in G of length at most 8. We characterize all situations where a 3-coloring of C does not extend to a proper 3-coloring of the whole graph.

Strong immersions and maximum degree
A graph H is strongly immersed in G if G is obtained from H by a sequence of vertex splittings (i.e., lifting some pairs of incident edges and removing the vertex) and edge removals. Equivalently, vertices of H are mapped to distinct vertices of G (branch vertices) and edges of H are mapped to pairwise edge-disjoint paths in G, each of them joining the branch vertices corresponding to the ends of the edge and not containing any other branch vertices. We show that there exists a function d:N->N such that for all graphs H and G, if G contains a strong immersion of the star K_{1,d(Delta(H))|V(H)|} whose branch vertices are Delta(H)-edge-connected to one another, then H is strongly immersed in G. This has a number of structural consequences for graphs avoiding a strong immersion of H. In particular, a class C of simple 4-edge-connected graphs contains all graphs of maximum degree 4 as strong immersions if and only if C has either unbounded maximum degree or unbounded tree-width.

Distance-two coloring of sparse graphs
Published in European J. Combin. 36 (2014), 406-415 • View PublicationBIB
Consider a graph $G = (V, E)$ and, for each vertex $v \in V$, a subset $Σ(v)$ of neighbors of $v$. A $Σ$-coloring is a coloring of the elements of $V$ so that vertices appearing together in some $Σ(v)$ receive pairwise distinct colors. An obvious lower bound for the minimum number of colors in such a coloring is the maximum size of a set $Σ(v)$, denoted by $ρ(Σ)$. In this paper we study graph classes $F$ for which there is a function $f$, such that for any graph $G \in F$ and any $Σ$, there is a $Σ$-coloring using at most $f(ρ(Σ))$ colors. It is proved that if such a function exists for a class $F$, then $f$ can be taken to be a linear function. It is also shown that such classes are precisely the classes having bounded star chromatic number. We also investigate the list version and the clique version of this problem, and relate the existence of functions bounding those parameters to the recently introduced concepts of classes of bounded expansion and nowhere-dense classes.
Three-coloring triangle-free planar graphs in linear time
Published in ACM Transactions on Algorithms 7 (2011), Article 41 • Search Publication
Grotzsch's theorem states that every triangle-free planar graph is 3-colorable. Several relatively simple proofs of this fact were provided by Thomassen and other authors. It is easy to convert these proofs into quadratic-time algorithms to find a 3-coloring, but it is not clear how to find such a coloring in linear time (Kowalik used a nontrivial data structure to construct an O(n log n) algorithm). We design a linear-time algorithm to find a 3-coloring of a given triangle-free planar graph. The algorithm avoids using any complex data structures, which makes it easy to implement. As a by-product we give a yet simpler proof of Grotzsch's theorem.

Three-coloring triangle-free graphs on surfaces II. 4-critical graphs in a disk
Let G be a plane graph of girth at least five. We show that if there exists a 3-coloring phi of a cycle C of G that does not extend to a 3-coloring of G, then G has a subgraph H on O(|C|) vertices that also has no 3-coloring extending phi. This is asymptotically best possible and improves a previous bound of Thomassen. In the next paper of the series we will use this result and the attendant theory to prove a generalization to graphs on surfaces with several precolored cycles.
